St. John Chrysostom does profess the essence/energy distinction implicitly when saying that God is utterly unknowable and that the ones who attempt to penetrate into the essence of God should be whipped! (Yes, he says that in a sermon, sadly I don't know the title of it right now.)

    • @Kralperri

@FightPeople It has to be read in the lager context of his writings. St. John says that we know God through his providence and goodness, which is the operations God had made known to us. That is why he so harschly condemns the ones who try to speculate in what God has not made known to us since this is an obstacle to true reverence. Vain speculations in the essence of God leads to arrogance and pride. So, the distinction is made implicit when St. John speaks of God's inknowability as well as his knowability. (Sorry if I'm confusing.)

      @@Kralperri it's not "confusing" it's non-sense... for good reason:
      read Isaiah 55
      Seek the Lord while he may be found;
call to him while he is near.(J)
      7
Let the wicked one abandon his way
and the sinful one his thoughts;(K)
let him return to the Lord,
so he may have compassion on him,
and to our God, for he will freely forgive.(L)
      8
“For my thoughts are not your thoughts,
and your ways are not my ways.”
      This is the Lord’s declaration.
      9
“For as heaven is higher than earth,(M)
so my ways are higher than your ways,
and my thoughts than your thoughts.
      10
For just as rain and snow fall from heaven
      and do not return there
      without saturating the earth
and making it germinate and sprout,
      and providing seed to sow
      and food to eat,(N)
      11
so my word that comes from my mouth
will not return to me empty,
but it will accomplish what I please
and will prosper in what I send it to do.”(O)

By "ecumenism of return," do you mean that heretics must become Orthodox? If so, yes, very based. Great stuff as always. St. Gregory Palamas, pray to God for us!

Great video, keep doing what you're doing! As a point of clarification, is the word used in the translations "divine" or should it be "divinized" (by Grace)? Aka in the original Greek, is it θεωμένος aka theosis[-fied]? Cheers from Thessaloniki!

Why does he keep talking about energy-essence distinction? The hesychast monks claimed to see the divine light of Christ, but he’s talking about deification & grace.
The blessed apostles literally gazed upon the glorified Christ while the Mt. Athos monks gazed upon their “navels.” So, how does Palamism address monks “experiencing” what the apostles actually saw? The Tabor light emanated from Christ’s physical person - it wasn’t envisioned by the apostles.

How is it that God had some energies from the beginning and others later, according to Palamists, if He is immutable? Makes no sense. Plus, now you have two gods! And you expect us to believe you about Church fathers being Palamists?

@Gabriel Garza because you can't know the essence of God. It is unknowable. Uncomphrehenable. Its the same with all of us. Our essence is truly who we are. @Gabriel Garza tell me, friend, where did your energy come from as a human being? You have to say it ultimately came from God. Is your energy any less than the uncreated energy of God? In order for God to be essence, He must operate. Unless you're claiming God did not operate in eternity? Is God not love? If you deny this, you are a pantheist and you have just made everything identical to God.
