  • Essence Energy Distinction has been quite the controversial topic these last couple years, one of the aspects of it that is not talked about enough is how the term itself developed particularly in the Christians themselves. I will be taking a look at how the term was used starting from Aristotle, to its major development in Christianity particularly in the epistles of St. Paul until St. Gregory Palamas' formulation of the doctrine, showing what exactly this uniquely Orthodox Christian Doctrine truly is.

great video david. i would like to add on the part about the Logoi. The Logoi are many, simple, differentiated indivisible infinite thoughts of God which God used to create by willing to create and pre establishing things in each logos in genera species and genus before they came to be which pre existed in Gods intellect as the many archetypes of things as their rational and assimilative constitution to which they were intended to be. Wisdom 11:20, Ecclesiastes 16:26, Psalm 104:19-30, Ephesians 1:7-9. as purposes which God instilled in principle wisdom 7:15-30. the intended good acts of will which structure each kind of thing which is patterned after its own logoi. the good acts of will are also an energy which gave things form meanings and identity, content in a sacramental mode that is volitional of both its sensible and intelligible proper to each.
The logoi are also correctly understood as a Christocentric embodiment that is sacramental as st maximos explains in mystagogy; St maximus the confessor ecclesiastical mystagogy, Pg 51; Therefore, as the point of his contemplation, the blessed elder said the holy Church bears the representation and image of God because she possesses the the same activity as his according to imitation and representation. For as God made all things by his infinite power brought them into existence, so now he sustains them and draws them together and defines their limits, and he providentially binds intelligible and the sensible things to one another to himself. Pg 52; All things have been united with all things without confusion according to the one, irreducible relationship and protection of the only beginning and cause. This relationship nullifies and covers over all individual relationships that are contemplated according to the nature of each of the things that are, not because it corrupts and destroys and destroys them and causes them not to be, but because it surpasses and outshines them, just as the totality comes into view rather than the totality.
St maximus the confessor ecclesiastical mystagogy Pg. 53; When the mind perceives in contemplation the principles of the things that are, it will end in God Himself, as the cause and beginning and end of the creation and origin and as the everlasting foundation of the compass of the whole universe. I will be shown that the holy Church of God works the same things and in the same way as God does around us, as an image relates to its archetype.
St Dionysius explains in chapter 5 divine names that the Logoi are also kinds of processions and intermediatory causes of things such as divine providence and beings which receive being from their procession; ''We must go on now to the name Being which is rightly applied by theology to him who truly is. But i must point out that the purpose of what i have to say is not to reveal that being in its transcendence, for this is something beyond words, something unknown and wholly unrevealled, something above unity itself. What i wish to do is sing a hymn of the praise for ''being-making-procession of absolute divine source of being into total dominion of being. The name Good tells us of all the procession of the universal Cause; It extends to beings and nonbeings and that Cause is superior to being and nonbeing.''
St Gregory of palamas speaks of them as exemplars and pre determinations of created beings as kind of energies which are enhypstatised in 150 chapters; ''87. This great man goes on to praise such processions and energies of God with other divinely fitting names and calls them participations and absolute participations. In many places in his treatises be shows that they are beyond beings and are exemplars of beings with a preexistence in God according to a transcendent unity. How then could these be creatures? And further, to teach what these exemplars are he adds, «We call exemplars those concepts or beings which pre-exist unitively in God and which bring forth the substances of things, concepts which theology names predeterminations and divinely good volitions which are responsible for the determination and creation of beings; in accordance with these the transcendent one predetermined and brought forth all beings.»365 How then can the predeterminations and divine volitions responsible for the creation of beings be created? As for those who posit these processions and energies as created, how can they not be manifest when they drag God's providence down to the level of a creature? The energy which bestows substance, life and wisdom and which in general creates and conserves created beings is identical with the divine volitions and the divine participations themselves and the bestowal of the goodness which is cause of all things.
    88. Therefore, participation in absolute being in no way participates in anything, as the great Dionysius says.366 Other participations, in that they are participations and principles of beings, participate in nothing at all, for neither has providence participated in providence nor life in life. But in that they possess being they are said to participate in absolute being, since without this they neither exist nor possess participation, just as there is no foreknowledge without knowledge. Therefore, as absolute participations they are in no way created. Thus, according to the divine Maximus these realities never had a beginning of being and they are contemplated around the substance of God and there never was a time when they were not.367 But when the Barlaamites impiously consider absolute life, goodness and so forth as created because they share the common appellation of beings, they do not realize that although they are called beings they are also beyond beings, as the great Dionysius says himself.368 Those who for this reason would facilely range the absolute participations together with creatures would also consider the Holy Spirit created, although Basil the Great says that the Spirit shares in names befitting the divinity.369
So the Logoi are also ways in which God is present and active in created beings themselves. there is a mutual synergy by which creatures receive the procession\energy ad extra as Gods manifestation to creation to which in their capacity to receive their energetic movement and being. you are aware that St John of damascus speaks of this in book 1 near the end on divine providence and in the beginning of Book 2.
St maximos also analogising ''that the Word of God is like that of a mustard seed seeming to be altogether small prior to its cultivation; but after it is cultivated appropriately, it is proven to be so great that the magificent logoi of sensory and intelligible creations like birds come to rest in it. For the Logoi contained in all things are established in it, but he is contained by no being. That is why the Lord said he who has faith like a mustard seed can move a mountain with a word; that is drive away the power of the devil against us and remove its foundation.'' 200 chapters on theology and economy part 2 section 10.
and 9.1 ''What is known of beings naturally includes the interwoven intrinsic logoi as what make it demonstrable, by which is naturally admits of circumscription, but God is only believed to be through the logoi in beings, since it is more certain than any demonstration, giving to the pious the assent and faith that he is in the proper sense. For faith is true knowledge, having indemonstrable first principles, since it is the fpundation of realities subsisting beyond mind and reckoning. 1.10God is the first principle, intermediate state, and end of beings--insofar as he is active, but not passive--just as all other terms by which he is named among us. So, he is first principle as creator, intermediate state as provider, and end as circumscription. Since 'From him,' it says, 'and through him, and unto him are all things.''
and as Fr dumitri sterniloae states in volume 1 on the experience of God chapter 1 PG. 16-17: '' It is in this way that we
must understand the affirmation of Saint Maximos the Confessor that
natural revelation has the same value as supernatural revelation. But
he specifies that it is for the saints that natural revelation has had
the same value as supernatural revelation, that is, for those raised
to a vision of God similar to that of supernatural revelation.1 For the
saints, the written law is nothing other than the law of nature seen
in the personal types of those who have fulfilled it, while the law of nature is nothing other than the written law seen in its spiritual meanings beyond these types. Both are one when they are seen as leading
towards the grace of the life to come.1 Through Christ, his garments - the creatures - are themselves filled with his own light.''

The part of "penal" substitution i never got on with is that many christians are taught that the penalty Jesus took upon himself was the wrath of God..
The sacrifical substitution on our behalf was done in love..not to justify a angry God...God so loved the world he gave his only begotten son..
The penal is augmenting the sin and death of the first man Adam..
Not because a pissed off God needed to be appeased..
Often this perspective is included when talking about penal substitution
