I think it's adding insult to injury when your ex offers you friendship. That's like starting a steak dinner and then having someone take it and replacing it with McDonald's. No thank you. I always make it clear that if things go south I'm not sticking around for friendship. I only ever did that once and we were both over it. It's really the only way it will work. Ironically enough my current ex used to always advocate staying friends (he had never had a long term relationship before me) and I would tell him it rarely worked. Now it's been 4 months and he hasn't reached out at all. Guess he finally understood what I kept saying. It sucks to lose a person but it's even worse to settle for scraps.

In my humble opinion, staying "friends" is the dumbest idea going, and it only benefits the person who isn't in love because they then treat you like a back-up and a sounding board. Ran into my ex at work and was so happy and excited as she approached me. Its weird to feel theres still something there as she smiled with her nervous smile and stumbled over her words. It was crushing when ending the conversation she said i thought you arent friends with ex's but your doing good right now. I was smiling as was she and i was just like you get what i mean and she walked off. The hot and cold kills me with her.

Yes, there are benefits for you in remaining 'friends' with your ex and I think those - practical, emotional support from someone that knows you in the most intimate way possible (as only lovers can), ego boost at times perhaps? - are why people do it, in addition to sometimes holding onto them as a possible backup of course, but it is not fair on or loyal to any future partners you or your ex-lovers have...potentially causing problems in someone else's relationship is not good karma. And, no, before anyone says it, the burden shouldn't be all dumped onto a new partner to deal with that nonsense...and if you really think it is, perhaps it is you that needs to grow up?

Like Craig says, "every relationship is different". After 131 days of NC, my ex reached out and I responded. I kept it simple, small talk and didn't come on strong. After that, I immediately went back into NC and 5 days later she reached out again and she asked to meet up and she stayed the night. Anyways, I'm 6 months ahead of her on my growth and development. She just left her rebound and is working on herself. I told her she needs to do that and I'll respect that and I have no problem clearing the air between us and having a good time and hanging out but I'm not in this to be friend zoned. So I told her when she's ready to date and if I'm still available, as I'm still going to move on with my life, and she's not interested, then to just let me know so I can move on. I'll know if she's interested anyways (even if she doesn't tell me) because 1) people spend their time with the people they want to be with. 2) If I get denied any sexual intersections after 3 meet ups. At that point, I'll let her go and show how strong I am and then crush her ego by calling her out and going another direction
Once its done it is done. No I would not stay friends with an ex after all that I, have been through. You are better to walk away and completely distance yourself from an ex, especially if they throw you away from someone else. The best excuse an Ex ever gave me was : I was " Distracted ". As to the reason she left me for someone else. It was a weak excuse. I thought I, knew this person for 11 years of my life even tho we only dated for four months. How wrong I was and the best advice ever after your break up is " No Contact " NC. Do not give your ex friendship if you ever want to have a chance at rekindling an old relationship. My Ex was in hysterics when I told her our friendship had died a miserable death, tried to tell me no it was not over. It took me 8 months to let go. Even tho the feeling is still there it was the best thing to do, close that chapter only to carry on and look to find someone else. Do not become an option or a sob blanket, no matter how much you care for them still, close the door and learn to say good bye. If you become a sob blanket they'll just keep looking for someone else, It is only when you close the door do they finally realize what is no longer there.

my ex has been contacting me a whole bunch since he broke up with me but i'm confused with where I'm at and if at this point if i were to say yes to him asking to hang out would it be bad or good for our relationship... since we haven't truly had a long period with no contact at all. Although he is contacting me first and I only reached out to him.. a few times in between. once or twice when I've already had a lot of messages before from him. I was saying no to hanging out... early on in the break up. But now it's been 2 ish months since then... he still reaches out every week or so... I'm not sure it's too soon that I shouldn't agree or that maybe he is ready to see me.. or if he just continues to think we're friends? I honestly don’t think that we should feel any way when we hear an ex talking about someone that they are going out with because, just like it was with us in the beginning of the relationship, that’s what will be happening there. That doesn’t mean that the new relationship is a a good one.
By that same reasoning, even purely platonic friendships should be avoided, because even purely platonic friends get jealous of their friend's romantic partners.
My ex and I met up today after 7-weeks since she broke up with me. Our meet up today went well. Despite me trying to not focus on the break-up, she took the conversation that way. I found out that she is due to get a hysterectomy in a couple of weeks to stop her cancer from spreading and she is quite devastated about it as she's always wanted, children. I felt that she was being honest and she was in tears a couple of times while talking about her health. She has said that while she is dealing with health issues that she can only offer friendship. I could tell that she still cares and she even stated that if it wasn't for her health, we wouldn't have broken up. I do want to support her in her health battle and since she feels that I didn't show my emotions and affection enough during the relationship, I don't want her thinking that I'm just walking away. Should I accept friendship to support her in this?

Yes, there are benefits for you in remaining 'friends' with your ex and I think those - practical, emotional support from someone that knows you in the most intimate way possible (as only lovers can), ego boost at times perhaps? - are why people do it, in addition to sometimes holding onto them as a possible backup of course, but it is not fair on or loyal to any future partners you or your ex-lovers have...potentially causing problems in someone else's relationship is not good karma. And, no, before anyone says it, the burden shouldn't be all dumped onto a new partner to deal with that nonsense...and if you really think it is, perhaps it is you that needs to grow up?

Like Craig says, "every relationship is different". After 131 days of NC, my ex reached out and I responded. I kept it simple, small talk and didn't come on strong. After that, I immediately went back into NC and 5 days later she reached out again and she asked to meet up and she stayed the night. Anyways, I'm 6 months ahead of her on my growth and development. She just left her rebound and is working on herself. I told her she needs to do that and I'll respect that and I have no problem clearing the air between us and having a good time and hanging out but I'm not in this to be friend zoned. So I told her when she's ready to date and if I'm still available, as I'm still going to move on with my life, and she's not interested, then to just let me know so I can move on. I'll know if she's interested anyways (even if she doesn't tell me) because 1) people spend their time with the people they want to be with. 2) If I get denied any sexual intersections after 3 meet ups. At that point, I'll let her go and show how strong I am and then crush her ego by calling her out and going another direction
Once its done it is done. No I would not stay friends with an ex after all that I, have been through. You are better to walk away and completely distance yourself from an ex, especially if they throw you away from someone else. The best excuse an Ex ever gave me was : I was " Distracted ". As to the reason she left me for someone else. It was a weak excuse. I thought I, knew this person for 11 years of my life even tho we only dated for four months. How wrong I was and the best advice ever after your break up is " No Contact " NC. Do not give your ex friendship if you ever want to have a chance at rekindling an old relationship. My Ex was in hysterics when I told her our friendship had died a miserable death, tried to tell me no it was not over. It took me 8 months to let go. Even tho the feeling is still there it was the best thing to do, close that chapter only to carry on and look to find someone else. Do not become an option or a sob blanket, no matter how much you care for them still, close the door and learn to say good bye. If you become a sob blanket they'll just keep looking for someone else, It is only when you close the door do they finally realize what is no longer there.

my ex has been contacting me a whole bunch since he broke up with me but i'm confused with where I'm at and if at this point if i were to say yes to him asking to hang out would it be bad or good for our relationship... since we haven't truly had a long period with no contact at all. Although he is contacting me first and I only reached out to him.. a few times in between. once or twice when I've already had a lot of messages before from him. I was saying no to hanging out... early on in the break up. But now it's been 2 ish months since then... he still reaches out every week or so... I honestly don’t think that we should feel any way when we hear an ex talking about someone that they are going out with because, just like it was with us in the beginning of the relationship, that’s what will be happening there. That doesn’t mean that the new relationship is a a good one.
By that same reasoning, even purely platonic friendships should be avoided, because even purely platonic friends get jealous of their friend's romantic partners.
My ex and I met up today after 7-weeks since she broke up with me. Our meet up today went well. Despite me trying to not focus on the break-up, she took the conversation that way. I found out that she is due to get a hysterectomy in a couple of weeks to stop her cancer from spreading and she is quite devastated about it as she's always wanted, children. I felt that she was being honest and she was in tears a couple of times while talking about her health. She has said that while she is dealing with health issues that she can only offer friendship. I could tell that she still cares and she even stated that if it wasn't for her health, we wouldn't have broken up. I do want to support her in her health battle and since she feels that I didn't show my emotions and affection enough during the relationship, I don't want her thinking that I'm just walking away. Should I accept friendship to support her in this?

Yesterday I decided to send a message to state what I clearly wanted and even apologized for my mistakes since I didnt do it at the time of the breakup. Now I feel waaaay better for expressing myself and rejected that offer from her, it feels empowering. I will start moving on an healing ASAP and indefinite NC. Has been very hard times for me. Okay here is my weird situation. If anybody's got any ideas let me in. I once tried to date a girl I liked but it never got off the ground over the course of 4 years I would see her as a "friend" and we generally always have a lot of fun seeing one another, over those couple years she cycled through boyfriends and I kept waiting for my chance, eventually after she broke up with her boyfriend I asked if we could try things out however the "relationship" never really even got off the ground a second time because I tried rushing into it, so we never "dated" but we where together and she knows that I wanted a relationship. Hello Coach Kenneth, i´m in a very confusing Situation. My Grielfriend is pregnant and left and left from me and the house. It wasnt a long relationship but a intense one. A half year. At the beginning i was begging an so on but from Christmas on i made the NO CONTACT rule. She texted me on Sunday the 15th and wanted to talk.
