    I've raised about 70 butterflies. I started by babysitting my daughter's classroom project. I love watching them grow in different stages. I also have milkweed all over my backyard. I just love it. Please keep up the good work and keep others informed.

    ❤ I have successfully raised 180 caterpillars to butterflies since June. I have about 30 in chrislyis right now. It all started with one milkweed plant. Now I have 5 areas in my yard of milkweed. I even bought 25 tags and started tagging last week! Makes me soooo good.

    23:15 The "working of the mouth parts" is important so they can eat! When a butterfly comes out of the chrysalis, it's proboscis is in two parts instead of one. The butterfly must zip the two pieces together like a zipper! Then it can suck up nectar from beautiful flowers.

    I bring the eggs in and hatch them because usually the spiders grab them as they're small. There are ways to move them and you don't have to touch them to transfer them to new leaves. Yes, they are tiny but grow pretty quickly :-)

    I just brought in my milkweed plant, then bought an organic one at nursery for my monarch catepillars. First time I've seen this and first time I let milkweed grow out front. One of mine was wandering around and almost lost track on the floor. I believe he is forming his hanging U shape now in screened enclosure. It's hard to know when they start getting cranky and wander all over the plants. This was the fattest one that did this behavior. I have a bunch more that I must prepare containers for them to hang from. For now, they are on the milkweed inside my patio enclosure. I'm amazed to see this happening in winter. I'm in Southern California and the temperature can drop to freezing once New Year approaches but it hasn't yet. Going a bit nuts taking care of them. I also have yellow sulphur catepillars on my sulphur bush I bought from the Nursery. There's 7 of them and 4 have turned into their strange looking crysalis. I'm learning all I can from you and others as 3 of my monarch catepillars died and I don't know why. I still have 11 I'm caring for and they seem to be ok.

    You do a great job with these videos, they've helped me through my very first monarch odyssey this summer and I now have 6 chrysalides and 12 more in their later instars. Just wondering, why not line the top of the container with some kind of removable screening so you don't have to pull the silk etc? I raised mine idkvidislly in jars with stem cuttings and the jars are topped with window screening...I would be petrified to pull the silk down I haven't even moved my 2 day old chrysalides yet even though I just have to cut out and hang their section of screening!

      The video on which you commented is 2015. The 2018 Revised video "From Milkweed to Monarchs" was recently uploaded. About one-third of the video remains from the 2015 video with the addition of the following three new sections: The Monarch Butterfly Nursery, Managing Escapees (chrysalis that get out of the enclosure), & updated information on "Call to Action" - where to get milkweed, etc. plus additional resources added to the credit roll. Details on handling the chrysalis' are in the section "Managing Escapees." • @nestibenches
      @nestibenches  5 років тому

      Hi Mary,
      I understand that our Illinois perennial milkweeds asclepias syriaca (common milkweed) swamp milkweed (a. incarnata and butterfly weed (a. tuberose) will work in your area.
      Tropical milkweed for sure will grow in your area. Just be sure to cut it off once a year and start a new one. There is a virus called OE that is detrimental to monarchs and multiplies the older the plant is. Cutting the old one and restarting a new one helps with that.
      Look for a native plant sale in your area. They will give U good advice.
      Good Luck and thanks for writing.
      Kay MacNeil

    I've read that the milkweed beetle is bad for the monarch caterpillars because they kill the caterpillars. Is that not true? I live in Illinois as well, Centralia, and I just started raising Monarchs this year. I love watching the caterpillars change and turn into beautiful Monarchs. I have been collecting the milkweed seed and going to start a milkweed bed in my yard. I have about 3 acres of ground out back that I have dedicated to basically wildlife refuse. I dug a pond and stocked with different fish types, and have planted flowers that the butterflies love as well as the hummingbirds.
    I have found that the Monarchs here seem to only like the common milkweed plant. I can't get them to eat any other type of milkweed. Why do you think this happens? Thanks for the video. And I'm wondering if you are still heading this program you spoke about. Today my husband and I are going to the Monarch Butterfly Round Up at the Crab Orchard Wildlife Refuge where we will be catching and tagging Monarch Butterflies. This will be an awesome experience I think. Keep up the great work Saving The Monarch!!!

      No I have not seen that I will check it out. I plan to next year make my own screen house to keep the caterpillars etc in so I dont have any escapees as I did his year when I found a newly hatched Monarch in my craft room on the floor and found the chrysalis under my desk. How it made it there Ill never know. But a caterpillar got out somehow and crawled up there. I was shocked to say the least. lol but thanks for the new info.

    Hi. Just to let you know that Monarch butterflies will lay eggs on citrus tree leaves and hatch caterpillars that eat those leaves. I know this because I've found one on our lemon/orange hybrid (named Pipsqueak - www.citrustogrow.com.au/citrus-range/pipsqueak/ tree and two on our orange tree in Melbourne Australia this summer. I currently have one Monarch caterpillar eating a leaf on the orange tree. Apparently if they can't find milkweed they will lay eggs on citrus trees. So that opens up a lot more opportunities, right? Anyway, I planted some milkweed seeds today in small pots with my grandchildren. I obtained them on ebay.
