Garden Vlog: Raising Monarch Butterflies

- Garden Vlog, Raising Monarch Butterflies. Whew, it's a long vlog today!!! Hey guys! Just a peek into what's happening in the garden and our hobby of raising monarch butterflies. It all started with one tropical milkweed plant in our garden, we noticed the monarchs loved it and we loved them, so we planted more. Before we knew it there were tons of caterpillars everywhere... but we were running out of milkweed and it's the only plant they eat. So while we're waiting for our milkweed regrowth and planting more, we started bringing the hungry caterpillars inside and going out on milkweed runs to find more around the island. When you bring in other milkweed that you didn't grow, just make sure it wasn't sprayed with chemicals. One sign of good safe milkweed, is if there are other fat healthy caterpillars already eating there, along with other bugs, aphids, etc.
By raising monarchs from eggs in a safe controlled environment, they have a 90% chance of survival, completing their life cycle and making it to a healthy adult butterfly. In the wild, fighting to avoid oe spores, parasites and predators, their chance of survival rate drops to 10% or less.
Once the monarch eggs and caterpillars turn into healthy adult butterflies, we release them outside. :)

I can watch your videos all day long. Watching a real life "Hungry Caterpillar" in action.
You are so nurturing and knowledgeable with the eggs it's amazing to watch. I hope you use the pictures, make it into a book and publish it for young children.

Hi Yes that's what I was thinking that too about a book with the pictures of her own butterflies in it
Discovery channel has got nothing on you! I learned so much about monarchs from this video!

We all must work to save them. They are great pollinators. If they disappeare , we will not get any food , crops, fruits ..... Nothing. Butterflies and bees.

This is so awesome took me back to my childhood. When I was in 2nd grade we raised our own butterfly! Each student got a little container and a caterpillar we fed it and watched it build its cocoon! when it became a butterfly we walked to a near park and set them free!

made her a beautiful home. We live near a field with some many plants, so we can. go everyday and get fresh plants. So excited! I pray that she makes it. Thanks for your AWESOME video.
I literally just finished reading (about 10 secs ago) an article that stated the Monarch Butterfly population had decreased by 80% thanks to pesticides found in weed killers like round-up. These herbicides are responsible for wiping out milkweed. It was so incredibly beautiful to see you raising them. When I saw you seed saving I clicked subscribe immediately. Thanks for this awesome video :) made my day.
This is so cool! My daughter sat and watched this with me saying ooo! Look at the cataerpillar, and OOO! look at the butterfly! Flutter Flutter ( she's 2) Every time you showed one. Thank you so much for sharing!
