Been raising monarchs for years. It all started when did a project on raising painted lady caterpillars for my daughter 2nd grade class. Now she’s 30 & my acre lawn is a massive butterfly garden of many varieties. They are just the cutest. Have even had 30 caterpillars growing inside during the winter months. Had some even escaped & make cocoon in daughters room when she was young. Only to find her giggling one morning with her room full of butterflies 🦋. She was in heaven. :) If you have lil ones look into raising butterflies for them....
I forget that raising monarch caterpillars isnt a normal part of everyone's lives. My mom started raising caterpillars in her classroom when she was a teacher, but even after she retired she raises them. She has milkweed all over her yard but when its caterpillar season, the milkweed cant grow fast enough. There will be chrysalis shells all along the fence and the house. We've found copycat monarchs (queen butterflies) mixed in as well. I hope your butterflies stop by her yard in Texas as they make their way down to Mexico. Maybe we'll raise the next generation.
THATS SO COOL!! I never got to raise them before, not even in school so I was completely 100% brand new to this 😅 oneday when I buy a house I want to plant lots of native plants and milkweed. #future goals
her saying she’s trying not to cry i felt that i was literally crying too bc you like literally raised them, they’re like your kids going off the school❤️ they’re sooo adorable and cute
Yeah i cried along with her. She is doing a beautiful and amazing thing for nature. I wish more ppl cared as much . Most ppl just use and abuse nature and we never just give back a lil. Did u ever wonder where all of your poop, pee and other gross stuff u make every day, goes? It goes into our waters and oceans and it’s killing wildlife. Our planet is dying. I don’t dare eat fish anymore . It’s too dangerous . Its not even our poop and pee that’s worst. But all the medical waste, medicines and needles and pills and poison all being thrown in oceans and our soil. The US isn’t even the worst offender, China and all those Asian countries are the worst violators. If ppl only knew just how much poison they dump every day. Diseases and poisons and deadly chemicals. All going into our precious oceans. And they’re just now finding dead fish and animals washing up on the beaches . The governments and scientists have known for a long time. They kept it from us and covered it up. Do u think the billionaires and powerful ppl eat the same foods we do? Heck no. They don’t even breathe the same air. They have built huge cities underground in other parts of the world where they have it stocked with food and grains to sustain life for over 100 years for a certain amount of ppl only . THERE IS A LIST. And no the list isn’t all just the rich, famous, smart and talented . No. Because they will need SLAVES. The only reason we even know about this is because some ppl talked. Many ppl have built these secret places. Do u really think they kept their mouth shut? No Of course not .
It's important to wear a respirator mask when tending your caterpillars in order to prevent mold from forming on the leaves and paper towels. Also, you can buy small cages at pet stores which are suitable for rearing caterpillars. I constructed by own cage with grates and a removable pan at the bottom. I'm presently rearing 126 Monarchs. I've already released about 40 adults into the wild.
Tip- I had a pet caterpillar and you have to put different kind of sticks inside of the enclosure so when they turn into cocoons they can hook on those sticks, but make sure to get a variety of them because they might not like that one stick❤️❤️
I rescued a mother and two very small babies, they were on the hot side walk 🥵 the area they were in really wasn't a great place for them as it was in a busy city. I took them in a mason jar I had and put the plants in there til I could get them home safely. This video is great so far and thank you for posting it so in depth! Now I feel like these little dudes I have actually have a chance
I've been raising Monarchs for 1 year now. My success rate from egg to butterfly is around 98% which is way better than the 5% chance if left untouched I read. I live in southern Cali by the ocean (Port Hueneme). There are so many amazing facts about these animals. They retain memories from being a caterpillar even though they liquify in the chrysalis. They also have navigation skills that we humans had to invent for ourselves in order to sail the ocean blue. They have it built in, the sun moves in the sky but they adjust on their trip to Mexico. They also find nectar via their ability to see ultraviolet areas of certain plants. Some butterflies are large and live 10 times longer than the others but they can't reproduce, odd right?
My Husband, Daughter and I enjoyed immensely your video. We thank you so much for the love you have of God creation. He'll reward you and will take care of you in the same way you did with the little caterpillar. God bless you sweetheart.
This is my first year raising monarchs and I have one chrysalis on its second day. I just know I'm gonna cry when I finally release my first butterfly! It's not as easy as some might think. But it's so wonderful to witness
This video has been so very helpful for us in our first journey in raising these little dudes in captivity. Your beautiful video captures and thoughtful, informative & sweet commentary left us without questions and deeply invested in the process. ❤
You are such a good mom for butterflies. Was it sad to see them go? What a beautiful lesson just watching their transformation. Totally awesome. You took such great care of them too. Thanks for sharing the process.
i’m a first time dad & my daughter will soon be two in november. she enjoys feeding our fish & takes interest in spiders. got me thinking of doing exactly this & your video was really enjoyable, thanks for the upload, can’t wait to surprise & experience this with my daughter & wife
Hello. To make the caterpillars more comfortable, you can recreate their natural environment. The plants, in a glass with water, and add branches to climb, they like to move away to shed their skin. It is good to clean and remove their droppings, they do not like it to be in their food.
I feel so emotional while seeing those beautiful butterflies start flying as if I raise them. thank you so much for given me such a experience .... And you are looking like Angel
Absolutely beautiful! This past summer I was truly blessed to be able to experience raising Monarch Butterflies for the first time. My grandma passed away in February and she really loved Butterflies so it made the experience truely special. We successfully raised 81 Monarch Butterflies and 36 black Eastern swallowtails. Thank you for sharing your experience 😊
I LOVE your video! 2 weeks ago I decided to see if I could keep a Common milkweed seed pod indoors and dry the seeds out. Today I went to open the pod and there was a very tiny Monarch caterpillar on the pod!!!! There must have been an egg on it. I got on Amazon and ordered the butterfly cage for him. I am so excited! I bought a little house in Northern Minnesota and immediately planted milkweed. Then I found some on the road edge next to me. That's where Elmer J Fudd came from!🥰. I also had planted prairie flowers in my garden which are on full swing! Thank you again for taking the time to make your wonderful video❤❤❤🦋
This is so sweet! To be honest: I watched this to study caterpillar movements for a clown piece, but your love and care for these little dudes is so sweet! Thank you for sharing this, and for being a friend to the Earth! :)
I’ve watched many videos on the raising butterflies and this is one of the best! I have 10 Monarchs I’m raising and look forward to releasing them soon ❤️
I have raised 6 monarchs from Caterpillar to butterfly, and released them once they were ready. It was an absolutely amazing opportunity, and will do it again! I have learnt so much from the experience, and they are amazing and beautiful creatures!
Found my first monarch a few weeks ago in my new seaside garden.I had lived inland, bought milkweed seeds online to grow to attract them, took the one plant that survived fires with me, so I will have food for any caterpillars.Monarchs only made it to Australia in the late 1880s. Glad they are here.
Awesome video! I have one monarch caterpillar and 4 black swallowtail caterpillars in a similar cage that you had. Thanks for the bit of confidence I was looking for!

You can tell if an adult monarch is either a male or a female. The hind wings of the male have a small widening of one of the black veins near the centre of the wing. This is the scent pouch used to attract females.
The day we were going to release them Daniel was talking about that Pokemon episode actually. I was going to include a clip at the end of the video but wasn't sure if Nintendo would copyright strike me.
@@CreativePetKeeping I think Pokémon was responsible for great part of my love for animals. I love your passion for pet keeping. You guys got a new subscriber : )
Such an exciting transformation! Thanks for the awesome video - it's super helpful to see! I have a monarch caterpillar that is about to transform into a chrysalis soon! I'm so excited!!! 🦋💚
Thank you so much for this video…I felt your same emotion when it was time to say goodbye…I made a butterfly garden in my backyard and it’s so amazing watching this miraculous process…
It looked super easy. Thanks so very much for posting this. I've been busy removing invasives and planting a wildlife yard. I'll be putting in my first crop of milkweed and wildflowers this spring and it's great to see that I can take this next step with little risk of failure and very little investment. I want to bring some caterpillars in since my bird population is getting pretty big, too.
It’s super emotional raising these kids. I raised a monarch stricken with OE. Hand fed her everyday for two months when she finally passed. Heartbreaking. Now the milkweed plant I got her has NINE hatched eggs. I’m already neurotic about predators taking these guys so I’m gonna order one of these net cages you have. Great video!
Great video! We planted a milkweed garden in our yard after adopting a mid-size monarch caterpillar. We didn't have milkweed but a lepidopterist told use they will eat pumpkin flesh, which they did. Now that we have our own milkweed, we take in a few every year and enjoy this miracle. One tip: If you're on city water, use distilled / purified water. We had a couple die from the first year after we planted and think the chlorine in the city water was harming them.
I’ve been doing Black swallowtail butterflies because they grew on my parsley and my dill weed. I had great success this summer but I made one mistake on my second batch! I let the sun get too much heat and I lost two of my babies 🐛🐛😔You would be the only one who understand. I’m so sad 😭 They’re such delicate creatures🐛🦋 I like the idea of doing Monarch butterflies💁♀️And doing the milkweed in a potted plant because, I have the same situation! You did a great job✌️🙌 love your video❤️
You are a such a beautiful soul, God Bless you!. I hope that those around you can feel the bless of having you close to them. Sometimes I wish that God release an army of angels like you in this sad world, so that humans can learn and understand that their selfish behavior will end in their own self-destruction. Only people like you will save this world. Thank you!
I've found a queen caterpillar at my small garden.. They eat my mother's cactus and now I raise them inside a tall container.. So, this is my 1st day and 1st experience raise caterpillar.. You help me a lot.. Thank you.. I can't wait to watch them becoming a butterfly in 9 to 14 days later
I raise them as well... if you raise them again, you can get a clear container with a lid and cut v cuts into the lid and stick cuttings from the plant in the v on the top and it'll help keep the leaves nice and fresh while they're eating
Thank you so much for ideas and tips. You guys have beautiful hearts. I hope you are still doing this. The world is indeed a better place with people like you. 💕
You did a wonderful job showing us exactly how this process works. This is the first time I am doing this project and you have done exactly what I needed. Thank you!
The mother and two babies I rescued don't touch alot but they really like to stay near each other I've noticed. They look around when they get separated until they get back to each other and it's the cutest thing
Love your video! I've watched many how-tos and yours was the easiest to understand and full of joy! Have 4 so far I'm raising this season .... one new thing I learned is it's important to keep them outside or they won't have the instinct to know how/where to migrate. So I weighed my habitat down and kept it on the porch... easy peasy Thanks for this lovely video ! So sweet, I'm a new fan!
Great video!!! To share with everyone... brand new research data reveals that if they are raised indoors they won’t be able to migrate as they should. Everyone should look it up. There are videos on how to put the same net cage outside. Hope this sincerely helps. Keep up spreading to others how vital it is to help them along and also plant “native to your area” milkweed. Great video work too! Hugs
I have my own caterpillar I found on the sidewalk on my way back to school I picked them up right before he was about to be smushed and I brought him to my home he's fluffy and is black a orenge I use a jar and I just search up what they eat I put leafs, stick, and grass I can't wait to see him become a butterfly he's so adorable aso! My dad told me he was on is way to becoming a butterfly already I've had him chill on my arm and stuff he was eating a grass as he was on my arm and he always eats up at the glass of the jar I can now watch him a study him!
This was the cutest thing. Thank you for taking care of those babies. I’m waiting for it to get a little warmer so I can start planting my own native wildflower garden :))
what a beautiful video!!! you captured them beautifully and when they flew away i got so emotional. i have a black swallowtail caterpillar that i found on my balcony a few days ago and he is getting so big and eating parsley all day long. i'm so excited for him to become a butterfly! this is the first time i've ever done this. loved your video. xo
So 118 people don't like Monarchs? Foolish people. I have watched other videos with butterfly gardens and emerging caterpillars/butterflies, they are always amazing. Your videography here is excellent, the best closeups I've seen. These Butterflies are aiming for destruction due to the environmental practices of people and industry, I love that I have found yet another protector. Well done!
I loved your video what a beautiful experience, I have been doing the same but with black swallowtail butterflies and it is an amazing experience , thanks for making the video !! Loved it ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Every year I raise and release as many Monarchs as I can. I also like to raise Black and Tiger Swallowtails. I avoid raising the last generation of the season because I don't know how raising this generation affects its migration, or hibernation in the case of Swallowtails. I'm hearing negative things about hand reared Monarchs not making the trip south. I tend to leave these last caterpillars alone.
You got soooo unbelievably lucky! I have been attempting to raise monarchs for the past 2 years. This last summer my milkweed had 27 instar 1's. Unfortunately they are super susceptible to parasites so 21 turned to 18 by instar 2. At instar 3 it dropped down to a whopping 7 caterpillars. Which unfortunate 5 didn't make it through chrysalis. 1 unfortunately saw the light however only emerged half way(wings never made it out) and only 1 surprised me and was hidden under a chair outside on balcony- and i found his/her/their empty chrysalis a week later
I just came across your video. You did an amazing job! I got my Husband to dig up some native milkweed on side of the road, hoping to get some eggs. Got one, it may or may not have already been on the leaf. Now I have a chrysalis under my lawn chair! Been reading all about them. Its my understanding the wings need about 24 hours to dry....but idk...im definitely no expert..LOL..

What kind of milkweed plant is the one with the fat leaves? Mine all has skinny leaves. The fatter leaves the more to eat.

I raise them as well... if you raise them again, you can get a clear container with a lid and cut v cuts into the lid and stick cuttings from the plant in the v on the top and it'll help keep the leaves nice and fresh while they're eating
The late bloomer 🥰
Thank you so much for ideas and tips. You guys have beautiful hearts. I hope you are still doing this. The world is indeed a better place with people like you. 💕
You did a wonderful job showing us exactly how this process works. This is the first time I am doing this project and you have done exactly what I needed. Thank you!
A little monarch catipillar appeared on my milkweed plant today! I named her Mage! Can’t wait! She’s so small!
[ Izzy ] hey same I named mine mage too but it is a boy I also have another one and she I think it’s a she is called Lisa
Siuhung Evelynwong
Awesome, mine turned out to be a boy but the name fitted either way
Hitting me in the feels. Thank you for sharing. Beautiful.
And so did I .. 😅😅😅
The mother and two babies I rescued don't touch alot but they really like to stay near each other I've noticed. They look around when they get separated until they get back to each other and it's the cutest thing
So beautiful ❤when u said try not to cry it felt like I was gonna cry
I’m so happy you are saving the monarchs it makes me feel so good 😊
I’m doing this with my children. Looking forward to it
That was such a very cool video ! Thank you for sharing! 🦋
I'm glad you liked it!
Love your video! I've watched many how-tos and yours was the easiest to understand and full of joy! Have 4 so far I'm raising this season .... one new thing I learned is it's important to keep them outside or they won't have the instinct to know how/where to migrate. So I weighed my habitat down and kept it on the porch... easy peasy
Thanks for this lovely video ! So sweet, I'm a new fan!
I will never not be amazed by butterflies and caterpillars. I cried watching them fly away too lol!
They are such amazing creatures. I have a new found respect for them.
this is soooo wholesome
Great video!!! To share with everyone... brand new research data reveals that if they are raised indoors they won’t be able to migrate as they should. Everyone should look it up. There are videos on how to put the same net cage outside. Hope this sincerely helps. Keep up spreading to others how vital it is to help them along and also plant “native to your area” milkweed. Great video work too! Hugs
I currently have a ton of monarch caterpillars on the basil in my wifes herb garden.
You're lucky, to get such lovely butterflies. In the UK we don't get such impressive ones.
That was a lovely video though very informative.
Thst was the sweetest thing I've ever seen ty for sharing I cried to awww🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋
Thanks!! This was way more helpful than the mile of literature and endless links on the website where I purchased my larvae.
This was the cutest thing. Thank you for taking care of those babies. I’m waiting for it to get a little warmer so I can start planting my own native wildflower garden :))
I'm so glad that you will plant a wildflower garden! It will be so helpful!
Thanks. I just had 7 Monarchs that hatched and the next batch of caterpillars are attaching themselves to their enclosure. This is so interesting.
what a beautiful video!!! you captured them beautifully and when they flew away i got so emotional. i have a black swallowtail caterpillar that i found on my balcony a few days ago and he is getting so big and eating parsley all day long. i'm so excited for him to become a butterfly! this is the first time i've ever done this. loved your video. xo
Loved it! I’ve never raise butterflies before so this was super cool. 😎
I love their little munches haha and YES OMG when I first cleaned thier cage I was shocked.
Keep spreading joy! this video is great
You’re right- it’s magical
Beautiful video, bless your kind heart for raising these little miracle 🙏
I love watching them have not done it in years.
Recently I got a caterpillar...started to nourish it.
I’m having similar problems 🥺
Humbling little creatures. 👍
Just magical!! I hope they make the journey to Mexico.
This is amazing, I learned sooo much, I don’t know why there are dislikes! BTW, can I use a foldable laundry basket?
