The flocked look like garb in my opinion. The Sem way is the best way, but the key is to do it properly. The crack wasn't finished being filled and was very over sanded. The best way to texture the Sem is to use a spray gun for the primer and dial the air right down so that it's almost a spackle, where you can see the individual droplets if paint, like purposely make it orange peel, then you sand the crowns off of the droplets that form. When you apply the paint you apply super dry spackly coats just over the repair area, then you blend outward going further with each coat. It can usually be done with the dash still in the car as well, and if you pick the correct colour, you don't need to do the entire dash either.
A massive gaping hole on the top of the dash isn't a crack. The correct solution for those is an overlay that is epoxied whatever's left of the dash. You want cracks, GM trucks and SUV's built on the GMT-900 platform. If the vehicle has not been garage kept, they all crack around the passenger airbag.

Honestly the painted dash doesn't look terrible, I really expected that to come out as a far third in this race. But that flocked dash just looks disgusting, no way in hell I'd ever do that to my car. Cover looks best, paint second, flocking just looks worse than a severely cracked dash.
I personally liked the painted version better just because the flocking looked a little fuzzy on the video. I've got a project 83 chevy truck I've been working for some time. By the time I'm ready to fix that horrible dash, I think I'll be in an ok position for trial and error. Great videos guys. Keep them coming.
honestly the dash overlays they make for those trucks dont look too bad. there is enough places to hide the edges and stuff. just be sure your original dash is flat (they like to curl and bed by the speaker holes and stuff) then glue the overlay down and it looks brand new. lot less work than filling the cracks and sanding and shit those dashes can get completely fuckerd lol. source: i have a fuckerd 86 c10 dash that i replaced with an already overlayed dash.
I have personally flocked my dash looks trash on camera but great in person same thing with car paint you can find dull spots on camera you can’t in real life
I was thinking he should have just sanded/filled the texture of the entire dash, then used a texture spray on it, then painted it. Sure, it might not be the "factory" texture, but it would be uniform across the dash, and cover the crack quite well.
The dash overlay has the best chance of looking really good as I have done several on older classic cars, BUT it involves removing the dash to get the best outcome. You must sand (grind) all the damaged areas and repeatedly test fit the cap before actually gluing it down. Then there may be some sanding necessary on the edges (test fit on car to locate trouble spots). After that you can paint it to match and SEM is a very good product to use for that. Finally reinstall dash and it will look sweet. I would only resort to filling & flocking if a dash overlay was not available for the particular car I was working on.
@@cory45x overlays look like overlays from across the parking lot, air bag or not. the other fun thing is they eventually crack right where the crack in the original dash still is.
There's a company called "justdashes" that to my understanding can fix any dash with the factory finish, they use some kind of vacuum sealing machine to lay new foam and textured top. I don't think it's the cheapest thing in the world, but if you really wanted that super clean finish it's worth consideration.
Just finally seeing this a year later but I gotta say thank you, Donut for making real-life car videos. These adventures are motivating and enjoyable at any experience level; In no small part to the cast's interactions, you feel as close to being there in person as you could possibly get. Nice work guys. 🙏
Option 4, Fiberglass the cracks, get vinyl by the yard from hobby lobby or [insert craft store here] and then adhesive it down, trim the excess and reinstall the dash. I did it on my oval dash 944 and the vinyl fake-leather cost me $18 (in 2013) and was pretty easy. Still have the car and it still looks good today. Used the same stuff for the headliner.
a short tip for the retextureing step : use acryl or silicone (for the bathroom seams for example) and lay it on top of a part of the dash with intact texture so you get a negative from it and let it dry ... after that you can fill your cracks und re-textrue it with the negative so you imprint a positive into the filling material itself, the filler or paint is to thin to get the right texture
"Ugh! I don't wanna but I'm gonna" The truest statement that every DIY Mechanic has said at one point. I've said it with my front wheel bearings and my control arm replacements. This is my favorite Donut Media channel for sure lol
One other option that kinda lands in the middle of this would be using marine grade vinyl wrap, you can get it in all sorts of colours and textures, cause it's supposed to be out in the sun all the time it's UV resistant is pretty good too. take your time and you'll have a near factory finish.
You can make a texture stamp when doing repairs to try and maintain the original dash texture. Lay down a big puddle of hot glue on a good section of dash, then peel it off when dry, and use it to rubber-stamp the filler on your final coat to blend the smooth into the original texture.
That's a really good Idea, although I think I'd use caulk or something that's not super hot when laying it down. (It would take a while to cure though). Probably also put a layer of screen door mesh after the first 1/8" of caulk and then a bit more on top to make it stronger so it doesn't stretch or break (cause the caulk is weak)
@@joshuaweaver7124 Is it because the hot glue turns harder you think? There are stiffer polyurethane adhesives (like marine adhesive caulks) that would turn harder and stronger than the regular caulk. I have no experience but want to do this on 3 big cracks on my dash. At the same time, I'm rather scared to put tub a super hot glue on my dash.
@@nickopedia5669 I think the stiffness of the hot glue was the key. Whatever you use make sure there’s no silicone in it if you’re putting it on a dash or piece of trim you intend to keep/paint, because it’ll keep the paint from sticking properly
I'll take option #1, because removing the dash is a 15-hour job for a beginner. 30 hours if you count the fact you'll have to do it twice because you forgot to plug in a connector when you re-installed it.
Pimp-mobile? What are you, living in the early 2000s? A flocked dash has been a staple of racecars for years, due to the way light bounces off of plastic/leather dashboards potentially blinding the driver. Flocked dashes look hella amazing
@@DoomGuy.XIV.88 >he thinks it's real leather because the point of the video series is to fix up a less-than-ideal car into something that performs well on the track, and this includes creature comforts like not being blinded by the sun's reflection when you're whipping it around corners
@@fakename287 no i get what doom guy means. I have a stock is200. And if my dash were to have cracks, i would not flock it. To me, it just doesnt look good. A bit too much glittery and wannabe race/track car in most situations. I like the filler concept and you could probably get it to be so good you wont see the cracks even if you decide to spray paint it. My option would be spray painting it, but in a paint booth. Not with spray paint cans
you don't want to mix filler on something porous like cardboard. The bonding agent will absorb into the cardboard and leave more filler. It'll harden more brittle then it should be.
@@ls_812 they're just people like the rest of us, they're amateurs who are pretty good at most things they try....the whole reason the channel is popular is because they're relatable
I've probably went through around 100 gallons of filler work remodeling Houses, and some Vehicle work. A flexible smooth plastic sheet is my favorite surface but about half of that 100 gallons was using cardboard. It's not as convenient but the end product is no different- Cardboard is fine.
I've been repairing car interiors professionally for over 5 years now and I can tell you that the SEM products work great, but it takes a lot of time and experience to know how to work them to make it look perfect. But for a first time that looks really good!
Dig the flocking and my Dr. Vinyl guy used to be really good at matching texture but I most recently went with a synthetic suede material and tucked and rolled it. You still have to bevel and fill the cracks but it was slightly cheaper than the flocking at $35 for 2 yards for essentially the same result, (although, I'm sure it would outlast the flocking in the end). I have to say that I'm impressed that you don't have any fear when it comes to these things. Jump in and make it work. You prove that even if you screw up, it can be fixed. Thank You. ALSO, very entertaining...
Don't forget that buying a replacement dash is only like 5% of it. The other 95% of it is pulling the old one, replacing all the other stuff you broke doing so, then bolting the new one in. And since you already have the dash out, you might as well replace your heater core, evaporator core, the broken blend door, and since you're fixing all the under-dash stuff, you might as well finally replace the compressor so you have working AC.
Flocking is the shit. Done it on a few dashes and if you do it correctly it looks AWESOME. In reality, doing option #3 works as well but takes much more time and prep work to make it look good. The flocking is thick enough where it hides the imperfections quite well. Definitely a cool comparison vidja. 👍
I love how I/think I watch most of the videos you post then, I look for a video on specific subject then BOOM donut has a video on it with higher production value and better instructions 😂👌 I love Donut
Overlay is only viable option if someone actually made one for the car. For mine? No change, too rare and not enough popularity. At least i have two cracked to hell dashes to fix.
I did option 3 on my 84 Toyota xtra cab dash When filling use the bare minimum because sanding filler on weak sun dried plastic sucks also sand the filler when it’s workable don’t let it dry over night the filler will be harder than the dried out plastic
I like the OEM look of the Miata - better even though you can still kind of see that little area, but the flocking also looks good but that would depend on what the rest of the interior of the car on the flocking dash looks like. If you have aftermarket racing seats and other things like that then the flocking would look better so both cars look really good in my opinion neither is better than the other cuz they both match the rest of the interior really well. You did a good job
I have done that prepare myself. You just about had it right you have to do a light coat of the filler then use your material for texturing. I've done it several times. If you're good at color-matching. You can dab the color into the crack instead of painting the whole dashboard. Spray your color onto a piece of cardboard and dab it into your filler once you have it set up. You can paint the dash and it would probably look more uniform. I actually learned the method as a Furniture repairman.
How does the flock go with having hands touching or running the dash, does any of the material flake or stain your hands / clothes when you legs press up against it during hard cornering or drifting? Always wanted to fix my dash up this way in my 180sx but worried about flaking, thanks!
Well let’s think about it logically... you laid down some sticky glue all over the dash and dusted on some dust particles on top. Ummm... yea the shits gonna come off!!!! Lol. I think that cover is by far the best option.
I would certainly hope its not bondo. bondo expands and contracts when temps vary. This is why all cars with thick bondo start to flake out. With how deep the cracks were, the dash would surely crack again. I have an E30 with massive cracks, so I'm going to just fiberglass over the whole dash then flock it. This way I can be certain it will never crack again as it is a big issue with how old these cars are getting.
Brings back memories of pulling the dash from my '90 Miata. What a job getting it out and back in. Ended up buying a used replacement from a parts car. And carefully pulled it out of the donor car.
What about stripping down to the internal structure, laying on thin foam sheet, and then vinyl sheet? Obviously not all dashes have enough structure inside for it to work, but it ought to be do-able. It’s what Just Dashes in Van Nuys does, more or less.
I really like the Flock it’s really cool looking. There is another way… a bit more advanced. A guy i knew when I lived in St. Louis had a diy overlay method in his garage. He would color match vinyl. Using a thick heavy weight stiff vinyl.(not very pliable) Strip the cracked dash vinyl. If the foam was repairable he’d repair it with some light shaping. Otherwise he’d strip to the boarding and glue overlay new dense stiff foam then contour shape it. He’d cut the vinyl to shape similar to upholstering a seat or door card. His method may make more sense if I explain it. 1-he’d drill a number of small holes in dash from beneath (not through foam just the board and he’d glue/seal plumbing barbs on the holes. 2- he’d put the vinyl in a heat box make it soft 3- attached a vacuum manifold and hoses to the barbs 4-very fast he put a weak adhesive on the vinyl, wrap overlay seal the seams with pinching force to board on the back side and applied a not full vacuum(too much causes wrinkles, too little doesn’t bond the adhesive). He’d use a heat gun and a rubber spatula to press out folds and wrinkles. 5- he’d use the heat gun and seal vinyl borders on the back side and tack them into place. The vacuum will bleed off so it is constantly pumping. 6- after the vinyl is cooled and and adhesive has cured slowly release vacuum. 7- if texture was too deep in vinyl, color match with some type vinyl plastic paint. His garage felt like it was a blistering hot oven when he did his work. He charged $$$(maybe $500-600) for those he didn’t know and those he knew, just supply him his cold brewskies until he’s done… if the cold brewskies stop he stops, so be prepared. He’s done full color changes to the interior and dash and it literally looks and feels original production line.
I've always heard that armor all actually damages your dashboard overtime then just leaving it "unprotected". I think it would be pretty cool if you guys could use different vinyl treatments on old dashboards let them sit out in the Sun for an extended period of time while using the recommended treatment frequencies and see which one last longest and which ones actually worth buying, if any. This is an awesome series, keep it up! Definitely my favorite on the channel.
I have a 2006 Lexus Is250. Several models of Lexus had the "melting dash" problem. I was going to buy new dash and door panels, which cost such as the car! 🤣🤣 Now I'm definitely going to "Flock it" Great videos guys! Keep up the great work!!!

They actually do t look bad did one on my old yota and had to paint match it but I was the only one that noticed it was there I'm pretty sure
@@daylen577 You're clearly not in the furry scene. Hahah. But seriously, the flocked one looks like crap.
Same. That flocking also looks uneven and still has some weird, specular reflection. I've also seen a lot of budget flocking fade into gray.
So I'm not crazy. I assumed it's because if the video but it looks like trash.
I agree with the painted dash. I will do that in 20 years. Lol
honestly the dash overlays they make for those trucks dont look too bad. there is enough places to hide the edges and stuff. just be sure your original dash is flat (they like to curl and bed by the speaker holes and stuff) then glue the overlay down and it looks brand new.
lot less work than filling the cracks and sanding and shit those dashes can get completely fuckerd lol.

I would only resort to filling & flocking if a dash overlay was not available for the particular car I was working on.
probably a better option for preairbag cars. airbags kinda throw a wrench in it
@@cory45x overlays look like overlays from across the parking lot, air bag or not. the other fun thing is they eventually crack right where the crack in the original dash still is.
There's a company called "justdashes" that to my understanding can fix any dash with the factory finish, they use some kind of vacuum sealing machine to lay new foam and textured top. I don't think it's the cheapest thing in the world, but if you really wanted that super clean finish it's worth consideration.

a short tip for the retextureing step :
use acryl or silicone (for the bathroom seams for example) and lay it on top of a part of the dash with intact texture so you get a negative from it and let it dry ... after that you can fill your cracks und re-textrue it with the negative so you imprint a positive into the filling material itself, the filler or paint is to thin to get the right texture

Love watching you guys!
The sponsor message today was so good I legit didn't skip through it
The flocking looks really nice but I'd have to flock the whole interior. I wouldn't be able to live with it not matching.
One other option that kinda lands in the middle of this would be using marine grade vinyl wrap, you can get it in all sorts of colours and textures, cause it's supposed to be out in the sun all the time it's UV resistant is pretty good too. take your time and you'll have a near factory finish.
The flocking has the extra advantage of reducing windshield reflections
That’s what I did, it works so well. I’ve also done the same with silicone on a scrap piece of textured dash. Hot glue worked better tho.
@@joshuaweaver7124
Is it because the hot glue turns harder you think? There are stiffer polyurethane adhesives (like marine adhesive caulks) that would turn harder and stronger than the regular caulk.
I have no experience but want to do this on 3 big cracks on my dash. At the same time, I'm rather scared to put tub a super hot glue on my dash.
@@nickopedia5669 I think the stiffness of the hot glue was the key. Whatever you use make sure there’s no silicone in it if you’re putting it on a dash or piece of trim you intend to keep/paint, because it’ll keep the paint from sticking properly
@@nickopedia5669 use low temp hot glue!
I'll take option #1, because removing the dash is a 15-hour job for a beginner. 30 hours if you count the fact you'll have to do it twice because you forgot to plug in a connector when you re-installed it.

Does the flocking turn your dash into a dust magnet? I can imagine it being a pain in the ass in the long run
Not really too bad for dust, brush nozzle on vacuum works good to keep it clean
It's the future. You can get a powerful cordless vacuum as well as electric hand held dust blowers for textured surfaces like this.
I did option 3 on my 84 Toyota xtra cab dash
When filling use the bare minimum because sanding filler on weak sun dried plastic sucks also sand the filler when it’s workable don’t let it dry over night the filler will be harder than the dried out plastic
This cheap flocking will fell of in couple months
That shit ain't gonna last. Unless he keeps that car garaged and only drives it twice a month, it's going to start to come off soon enough.
You forgot option four: Leopard print velour wrap.
The only thing missing from the flocked dash is a picture of Elvis.
Always wanted to fix my dash up this way in my 180sx but worried about flaking, thanks!
same, and how is dust. looks like u cant just wet vipe

“Filler is kinda what bondo is"
"smells just like bondo"
🤔🤔🤔
Scientists believe it may even be made of a similar chemical composition as bondo.
My dad patched a rotted bathroom floor with bondo once...... jt lasted longer then the floor
Tip: to replicate leather-like surfaces use a scrunched up plastic bag and dab it on the almost dry primer.
Great tip, might try it sometime
Yeah fabric is too uniform. You need some chaos to make it look right.
I really like the Flock it’s really cool looking.
There is another way… a bit more advanced. A guy i knew when I lived in St. Louis had a diy overlay method in his garage. He would color match vinyl. Using a thick heavy weight stiff vinyl.(not very pliable)
Strip the cracked dash vinyl.
2- he’d put the vinyl in a heat box make it soft
3- attached a vacuum manifold and hoses to the barbs
4-very fast he put a weak adhesive on the vinyl, wrap overlay seal the seams with pinching force to board on the back side and applied a not full vacuum(too much causes wrinkles, too little doesn’t bond the adhesive).
