- I have had people asking me for some time about engraving wood with the Cricut Maker. I finally had a chance to sit down and perfect a method for you. And I must say that I am loving the results. I used the engraving tip along with the knife blade to make some wood earrings and they turned out really great. Grab your supplies and craft along with me cause you are going to want to try this technique.

FINALLY! A video that ACTUALLY shows engraving and not making a stencil! Thank you for this video!
Thanks so much for mentioning that the knife blade can only be used with a computer and not on the iPad. You just saved me so much time and frustration.
No problem!
Go to material settings when you open the materials section. You can customize your own material and choose how many passes, what blade, pressure, etc. and you can edit ANY of those preset materials too.
Hi from Kent, England. I love your tutorials, thanks for sharing your knowledge and being honest.
Thanks for watching
you have some of the best quality instructional videos out there! Thank you for your time and talent!!
Wow, thank you!
You are so good with exposing projects. Thank you!
Really love this project. Can't wait to try it; making earrings is such fun!
Glad you liked it!
oh I found you too late! I'm finally trying to engrave and cut 1/16 basswood! I couldn't get it to do both on basswood. Wish I would've found you sooner! But now I know! thank you!!
Good luck!
Just the video I was looking for. I grabbed some wood key chains from my local craft store and was looking for some inspiration to help me make cute Christmas gifts. Thanks so much 😊
Glad I could help!
all of these are soooo cute!!
Hello Angie, I would love to see more tutorials on how to use Cricut as I am new to equipment
I learned a lot from this video. Thank you for making it.
Glad it was helpful!
Great video! I suggest you add gloss or resin to the wood and also cut a larger size to make a matching pendant.
Great idea!
Thank you!! Great advice and approach
Typo you are so good explaining projects. Thank you!
Oh thank you!
Really like this tutorial!!
Glad you like it!
Thank you! Your video was super helpful!
Your voice is so cute. Thanks for the video. It really helped. :)
Glad it helped!
Well explained!!!
Great video! Earrings turned out so cute!
Glad you like them!
Hello Angie!! I love all of your videos. I have a question. Have you tried engraving on glass with your Cricut maker? I have been looking for a video but haven't come across any yet? How thick or thin should the sheet of glass be? I have done freehand engraving on glass but haven't tried my Cricut engraving on glass. I print the image on paper then use carbon paper under the paper image and trace it to the glass. Before engraving, I used clear tape on the image and engraved it thru it to prevent glass shavings from going everywhere. Would that work on the Cricut too? I have another question too. How do you get your Cricut to go over a design so many times? When cutting vinyl as a stencil, why does the Cricut not cut all the way thru the vinyl? I did multiple passes and never did get it to go all the way thru it so it was easier to weed. I used the fine knife blade attachment on that project.
You cannot engrave glass that I know of. Sounds like you didn't pick the right setting for your vinyl. You would need to try another cut setting.
@@AngieHolden I used the setting that my maker called for with vinyl. I'm not liking that you can't always change the settings for different materials and the cutters you can use.
Thank you for the video! I am trying to engrave and cut hearts on basswood for a wedding and the knife blade isn't cutting all the way through the wood on the tooling leather setting. How many passes do you suggest? It automatically did 14 or 16 passes and I did another 10 and it wasn't even close to cutting throuhgh. I tried for close to 5 hours and nothing worked. Any suggestions? Thank you!
They may have altered the setting since the filming of this video. All you can really do is to keep adding more passes.
@@AngieHolden Ah ok. Didn't think of it being altered. Thank you!
This was very informative and easy to follow. I do have a question though - why do you copy and paste instead of using the duplicate and align functions.
Either way.
I just purchased a Cricut Maker. My goal is to make wood earrings in organic shapes, etched with my own designs. I'm an abstract artist, so I hope to make earrings to mimic my abstract art, and I will paint within the etched lines. Am I able to make organic shapes, or can I only do generic geometric shapes such as the circles and rectangles? Thank you for your tutorial!
You can cut any shape. I will say that the knife blade is not great with really sharp turns and fine details.
What type of cricut is used to engrave the wood you were using? Will an Explorer X2 work?
I am using a Maker but you could use an Explore with an off brand engraving tool.
Love this. Thanks.
You are so welcome!
Just curious. Why do you not have the cricut cut the holes in the earrings?
That small of a hole will not work well in wood with the knife blade.
Hi, I was hoping to make a jigsaw puzzle out of the basswood after engraving a design onto it. Would you recommend to cut the pieces after engraving, so through the engraved/stained design, or cut the outer and inner parts first and then engrave/stain? Would the engraved areas prevent/mess up the knife blade passes or be ok?
I would engrave then cut WITHOUT unloading the mat. Then stain after removing. I think it will work.
Great video! Very informative. Question: Would the engraving be altered if more pressure was chosen? For example: a very detailed engraving with lots of small shapes (2mm wide).
Small details still won’t do well.
So the way you added 2 layers the engrave... could you do that with de-bossing & engraving on leather to get a smoother image?
You can try it!
Hi Angie, what kind of paint do you use? Thank you!!
A variety depending on what I am doing!
Beginner here! But I wanted to ask, can you only pic a graphic like the diamond or line to be engraved or can I use a picture that I have made let’s say for stickers can I put that on my shape to engrave?
You can do any picture but I find that more intricate shapes do not do as well.
Your Chanel very helpful! I have a question does it take long to engrave?
Not long at all!
Great video as usual! I do have a question. My maker would not cut all the way thru even with many extra passes. Ive barley used my knife blade but could it be dull? I recently cut chipboard with it no problems
Well that is strange. Where did you get your wood? What thickness?
@@AngieHolden Basswood Sheets 1/16,Thin Plywood Wood Sheets for Crafts 1/16 ×8×12 Inch,5 Pieces
This was purchased from amazon 😪
The basswood from Amazon can really vary in quality. Sometimes it has hard spots in it that make it hard to cut. You can just keep trying extra passes!
@@AngieHolden i plan to keep trying! The project im practicing on is for my daughters wedding in june 👍
@@AngieHolden so i have riddle for you regarding this. My maker will cut my amazon basswood just fine. It takes 16 passes. It wont however cut my basswood on the tooling leather setting from the video. Not even with many many extra passes. Not even close enough to use a craft knife to finish it off. Do you have any more ideas ?
Love your videos! Question. I'm wanting to make bookmarks and have seen both of your videos - should I use basswood or balsa or other?
Basswood if you want them from wood.
@@AngieHolden I do, thank you!
Can you do the same thing on wood veneer with the deep point blade and engraving tip? Or would it have to be basswood?
Wood veneer with not engrave.
I don't have a cricut but am wanting one and I'll need it to engrave designs into wood, that I'll go over with a burning tool, not cut them out. What machine would be best for that?
You can only engrave wood with the Cricut Maker. I don't think the other machines will do it. I do want you to realize that you are limited to 2.4 mm thick on the Maker, however.
Thank you!!!!!
Great video (as always, Angie) thank you !! I wonder if you could write on wood with the engraver too? xx
I think it would work! I wouldn't do too intricate of a font. Also remember that you will need to pick a font with a writing version.
@@AngieHolden you should be able to use certain regular fonts as well, as long as you slice it with a fill line pattern to0 fill in the open spaces .
Very informative...UK
Glad you think so!
Thank you!!
You're welcome!
Angie, why can’t I use the knife blade with my maker and an iPad. I just ordered a new iPad this morning and a new maker two days ago. Now I am worried because I was looking so forward to crafting some wooden crafts🥴
They just haven't released the ability to do that yet. Sorry!
I love your channel! Thanks for the videos! I have a question about the basswood, I have some unicorn spit and I was wondering if I could stain the basswood before cutting it or would that effect the machine? of course id let it dry, but i'm wondering if there is a reason everyone is cutting then staining.
I cut then stain so I can do the edges. If you don't want to do the edges, I don't see why you couldn't do it before.
@@AngieHolden Thanks for the response, I figured I could finish edges after I cut them out but I'd also have to sand them down a bit witch may be an issue, I'll give it a try!
ANGIE, where do you get the book shelves behind you in the video? I am working on my craft space and these look awesome!
They came from Walmart several years ago.
Which cricut maker are you using?
This is the original Cricut Maker.
So I haven't had any luck cutting the basswood with the Cricut Maker. I tried it with the settings you suggested and that others have suggested. Any ideas on why this might be? I keep wondering if my blade is not sharp enough. But all I've cut with it is less than a dozen pair of leather/faux leather earrings. Any ideas?
Hmmm. When you say you haven't had luck, what does it do?
@@AngieHolden it cuts some sections but not others. It only cut one side of the rectangles. I had to manually cut the other three. I tried a cutting it a word and some sections were cut all the way through but not others.
@@AngieHolden I should say, it cuts part way through the other sides but not even close to getting all the way through the material.
Wood cuts really uneven. You can press the C after the cut is over and let it go another pass. I have done this SEVERAL times to get closer to a complete cut. But I also finish the cut almost always with a craft knife so I don't ruin my mat. :/
@@AngieHolden I did do multiple passes but then it started cutting into my mat. I'm thinking I'm just going to avoid cutting wood with my machine.
So, this vid is a couple of years old now, though it's my first time watching. I notice the cut from the blade is so much cleaner than the engraving tip. The cut needs 15-16 passes. What if you did the engraving with the blade but stopped it after 2-3 cuts? Would the blade tip engrave better than the engrave tip? What obvious thing am I missing?
Yes that could work. However, you can't choose which lines will only do a few passes. They will all do the same if they are cut lines.
It would be interesting to test engraving on a harder wood and see if you got cleaner results. Of course you couldn't also cut those with the Cricut.
It would have to be so thin though!
@@AngieHolden Oh, fair point. They do sell 1/16 walnut sheets on Amazon though.
Can I engrave onto a small wood USB flash drive?
Not with a Maker. A laser like the Glowforge Aura should do something like that.
Hi Angie, would this method work for engraving writing as well?
Not sure! The engraving isn't super detailed on wood.
Is stain necessary when engraving? I bought wood and the engraving tool to try it out, stain never came across my mind..
Not necessary! It just makes the engraving stand out more.
Which software you are using please for the designs? On the computer
Cricut Design Space. It is free and works with a Cricut.
I am confused .Why weld the two yellow pieces ( why do you need two )?
Couldn’t I just group the two diamond shape and align center instead of remembering the coordinates
And re align center on the yellow disc? Help 🤦🏻♀️
There may be other ways to do it? This is just the way I make them.
The link for the earring svg file does not work. Is there a way to get this file? Thanks.
Sorry it was a Cricut file and they have changed some things.
thanks so much good job! can it also engrave letters and numbers too? thanks
Definitely! I would pick a plain font though.
Can you tell me what brand of wood stain you used? because it was thick not runny.
Sure! It was a gel stain not a regular stain. Brand is Americana.
@@AngieHolden Thank you so much.
Too bad the engraving tip in the link above is out of stock! Do I need just the tip or do I need the tip and the housing? Sorry, newbie here...
You do need the tip and a QuickSwap housing. The housing is the same as the scoring wheel, deboss, wavy, and perf tips. So if you a housing for one of those it is the same. Let me look around and see if I can update the description with more options for purchasing!
I added a few more links to places that it seems to be able to ship from fairly quickly. Like within the next few days getting it by the end of the month.
What kind of stain would you use if you can't find gel stain ?
Any stain will work!
Will you be doing a demo on metal pieces? I'd love to see one for metal, and thank you for this video.

For cutting foam which blade and mat is required in circut maker
I don't have a video but I do have a blog post here: www.thecountrychiccottage.net/how-to-cut-craft-foam-with-a-cricut/
I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I've spent so much on tools and wood and aluminum. I can't get anything to come out good. Cricut support has replaced my engraving tool twice. They sent me aluminum sheets that are not cutting through. Basswood doesn't engrave, it's chipping. Can't cut through the wood and it's 1/16. I've contemplated returning it and selling all my material at last 4 times this week. Idk what I'm doing wrong....
You cannot cut the aluminum sheets with your machine only engrave on them. You can cut and engrave thin wood but keep in mind this machine is slow and will take some tweaking to get setting right for these types of materials. If you want clean cuts and engraving lines, investing in a laser is the way to go.
@AngieHolden I just bought 1/32 cricut brand basswood from Michael's and although it's not chipping away the way the wood sheets I got from Amazon, I wasn't able to even choose wood as an option to engrave it. I had to try to cheat it and chose leather. It's quite frustrating. But, I'm so deep I the $$ hole and I have a show this Saturday. I hope I can turn out at least a few pairs of earrings. It's been running for over an hr, here's hoping and praying it works
I show how to cheat the system in this video for engraving. The Cricut brand of wood definitely cuts the best. The others can be frustrating. There is nothing you can really do however. It is just how the Cricut cuts that material.
@@AngieHolden I really really appreciate your responses. And let me just note, these comments weren't meant to speak negative on your video. I hope it didn't ring that way! It was my frustration with this darn machine and the deadline I was trying to meet. It was a rough week, haha. Thanks again for all of the great tips. I'll keep chugging and def opting for the cricut wood going forward!
Can you use Birchwood??
Not that I know of.
Can you use engraving tola mekar 3 please answer me ?
Yes you can.
Can you engrave text? Does it work well?
I have not done text on wood.
How thick of wood can it engrave? Like can I engrave a cutting board with my name?
No you cannot. You are limited to a maximum thickness of 2.4 mm. A Glow Forge is the machine you are looking for when talking about engraving super thick things like that.
Dear can it work with cricut explore air?
No it doesn't. Sorry!
do you have a tutorial about engraving words and letters? (writing font and bubble letters)
Not specifically on wood, no.
@@AngieHolden have you tried it before by chance? Do you think that would work or do you think that could be too intricate?
But can this be done with text you do designs but not TEXT
You can't get very intricate but a straight line text might look okay.
hi what kind of wood stain do you use?
I generally use a water based gel stain from DecoArt.
Thank you. I now know wood does not show under materials for engraving, to use Leather Tooling instead.
Angie you are the best!
Any time!
how do you make your own shapes?
I cut mine with the Maker.
Thank you! Used my knife blade and it broke the first time! So sad! And so expensive...
Nooooo!! You might contact them and see if they will give you a free replacement.
Wow like
Mine still goes to the knife blade option with the tooling leather 😩😩
You will cut them with the knife blade. Make engraving lines for the engraving tip.
Angie Holden perfect I’ll give it a try thank you!
What about of you want to have text vs shapes?
You can do that however I would not get too intricate.
Do you have a link to the wood stain you used? Great video! So helpful! Convinced me a need the engraving tool! 💜
Hmmm....I am not positive if they make it anymore. It is Decoart Gel Stain.
@@AngieHolden thank you! I will look into that!
@@AngieHolden How did you get the Cricut to engrave twice?
The engraver tool just ripped up the wood. I don't understand how you are getting clean lines!
I did sand after I engraved. This will just scratch the wood surface.
LoL, the camera's Cricut!
Great video as usual! I do need some help. My maker would not cut all the way through even with many extra passes. Any suggestions.
Why do you copy paste instead of just duplicate?
I use control c to copy and control v to paste. Hold down control and click c while you have the item highlighted. It does the same as the duplicate though!
How to restick circut mats
Try washing them! Here is a video on how to do that: ua-cam.com/video/HPwrDUrQiyc/v-deo.html
Thank you
I can't get my maker to read my engraving tool 😭
I would definitely contact Cricut about that issue. Make sure you have changed to engraving lines and that you only put the tool in when your machine asks for it.
Can you engrave words?
It should work. Depending on how intricate they are.
those are kinda ugly lol
Thank you!
Thank you!
You're welcome!
