One could argue that Uli Jon Roth invented neo-classical electric guitar and brought it to the masses through his work with the Scorpions in the ’70s. PG’s John Bohlinger caught up with Roth during his tour with Jennifer Batten and Andy Timmons for a look at his high-powered setup.
Originally a Strat man, Uli felt limited by the instrument and wanted something with more frets and a wider range of tonal options. The solution came in the form of the Dean Sky Guitar. Above the 27th fret, this scalloped-fret monster switches to whole-step fret spacing. The Sky Guitar's pickups are a custom four-coil humbucker with a second pickup hidden under the 24th fret. The electronics run off of phantom power via a stereo 1/4” inch input cable from a proprietary power source.

What a great, wonderful interview. I've been a Uli-era Scorpions fan since the 70s and Ulirich Roth was a God to me. Don't get me wrong here though, I love the post-Uli Scorpions too!
So mysterious and gypsy-like because of his look and his playing was miles ahead of many rock guitarists of that genre. Plus coverage of Scorpions was so few and far between, and you could only be aware by listening to the records back then. They didn't even play in the US until after Uli left in 1978-1979. No internet access, only word of mouth, and rarely any media coverage outside of the specialty magazines. He was untouchable as far as rock guitarists went for the times. So innovative and musical.
In this interview, besides sharing his rig and the Sky guitar, his philosophy of music is just great. My jaw was sore from smiling throughout!
Thanks so much for sharing this Priener Guitar!

Chris Vasquez Seemed kind of sloppy to me, compared to some others I've heard. Then again I didn't know of this guy till now. I will have to find some old Scorpions records.

Excellent rundown! I love honest interviews. Uli doesn’t like “these” mics that weren’t part of his agreement. He didn’t call out the company yet made his opinion clear. One of my favorite rundowns. I could listen to Uli all day. An underrated icon that essentially started the neoclassical movement. Which kicked open the door for everything, not unlike Jimi. Great job PG!

Masterclass ...Pay attention guitar players! Uli is brilliant. This was a great video from the most organic guy sound wise on the planet. This is the most quite I have seen John B. so I know he learned from this one ...as we all did. Thanks for the fantastic interview I will never forget this one!

I've never been into Roth's music, but he is clearly at one with his guitar. It is a unique instrument designed by someone with a very clear vision of what his personal instrument should be. What a treat.

I love this guys playing. Fly to the Rainbow from Tokyo Tapes is my go to track when life gets stressful. Don't you think as he's getting on in life he's looking a little like Mr Miyagi and the Zen things he says about playing while his hair blows in the celestial breeze is just amazing. Is he the Mr Miyagi of Metal?????

“Make the guitar sound good” That’s perfect advice. Some days I tell my students “Come back next week and play well” or “When you come back play musically” which is vague I understand, but it’s interesting how few actually react to those statements. Yet, they are the purest forms of advice perhaps. These things take time too and that’s ok.

Dry guitar practice, words of wisdom. EVH said the same thing. I have always gotten compliments on my tone and I hardly ever practice plugged in, I've done this naturally out of necessity. there really is something to this.

Never plug in when I'm home unless I'm alone or wanna try and practice with the amp on. I've been doing for years and you learn a lot about getting certain tones from your picking and vibrato approach. You also learn about sustain without amplification.
