    Winding down his recent tour with a sold-out, 3-night residency at Nashville’s historic Ryman Auditorium, Joe Bonamassa invited Premier Guitar for a leisurely trip through his holy grail guitar vault and a lineup of ear-splitting amps.
    Joe Bonamassa rolls with two blonde Teles, both sporting ’buckers in the neck. This one is a 1952 Fender Telecaster formerly owned by Brit-rock legend Terry Reid. Reid installed the Gibson pickup in the neck around 1968. This Tele, like all the other guitars on tour, is strung with Ernie Ball (.011-.013-.018-.030-.042-.052) strings. JB plays with Dunlop JB Jazz III picks in herco gold and uses metal JB signature slides from Dunlop.
    Joe Bonamassa rolls with three Fender Stratocasters. Here is a 1955 hardtail, known as the “Best Strat.” It was purchased from Emerald City Guitars and refretted by Joe Glaser.
    Joe Bonamassa’s amps can likely be heard from space thanks to this pair of Fender Joe Bonamassa ’59 Twin-Amps. Each one packs a whopping 80 watts of power and sport Celestion JB-85 speakers.

      Which Celestion 85 watt speakers?

    • @samroney6644
      @samroney6644 5 років тому +4

      @@aaronbrooks3913 He's referring to the 80 watt, Celestion Classic Lead. Possibly referring to his "JB" signature version, which may be 85 watt. Also known, in 90 watt version, as Mesa Boogie C90/BlackShadow. Both versions of the Classic Lead. Comparitively, very flat response & tight low end. Pretty sure the 80 watt version is now made in China, while the Mesa Boogie version(my personal choice) is still specially made by Celestion for Mesa in the Ipswitch, England factory. Not sure if the JB version is Chinese or British, but the British C90's sound best to my ears. They seem to be better quality.

      Joe is huge fan of EV speakers. When he was with Blood Line he had original G65 Celestions in his JCM 800’s. He played Strats exclusively back then. And yes John there from Premier Guitar is a fantastic player. Very gifted for sure.

    I personally met Joe when he played at the Melba Theater in Batesville, AR. Two years later, I saw him play again in Dallas, TX. I was outside the venue before the show and Joe stepped off his tour bus, I yelled “hey, Joe” and no exaggeration he yelled back, “hey,Chuck”. He then proceeded to walk over and asked how I was doing and asked about my boss who owned the record store Blue Meannie II where I worked. Unbelievably personal experience I’ll never forget. Joe is gracious, friendly and humble.

      Level of success is debatable. The rig rundowns with techs (GnR, U2, Def Leppard, etc) are on many levels of success higher then Joe. Also, Joe loves talking about gear. You can find many videos of him talking tone and gear at great length.

    • @davidbakerscuba
      @davidbakerscuba 5 років тому +72

      Greg Golightly I agree to a degree. Joe is currently touring the world and selling out nightly. He also has endorsements and signature gear from major companies. He sells records and DVD’s in high numbers around the world. Those are all signs of current success. Several of the groups you mention used to be big but couldn’t currently sell much. I don’t know anyone who has recently purchased any of Def Leppard’s new stuff. Don’t get me wrong, I am a huge fan of 80s rock but those guys should be doing anything they can to resurrect their careers. Joe is out here being a friend to fans and the media when he has a current successful career.

    • @gariG2

      Absolutely!! Most bands you see in clubs and smaller venues (and in the UK ‘pubs’) have an awful sound due to their complete lack of understanding of frequencies and where each instrument sits in the mix. I’ve left bands because of the frustration and ear bleeding mush of sound, watching audience members wince. How many musicians think it’s a volume problem and everything is solved by telling each other constantly to turn it up or down to be heard 😤😖🤬. Joe constantly spoke of which frequency his sound produced and sat in the mix how it would destroy the Hammond organ and clash with the cymbal sound etc. Hallelujah, now I will share the link with any band member (especially guitarists and the ultimate dark destroyer the bassist😁) and say listen to a master and what a true professional needs to know 👏🏻

    • @gariG2

      I think at 45:18 Joe said how he try’s to fit in with the Hammond by not playing chords......... etc. In my experience If frequencies match try syncing and blending with each other as one instrument but more importantly one person does not overplay, less is more. It’s admirable (and a lesson for all knee sliding, scissor kicking rock gods!) that Joe does not allow ego to get in the way and he is willing to play second fiddle for the love of the music and the band.

    I absolutely love Joe's character and humility. Here is a man who has worked his fingers to the bone to achieve the success he has had, and who has invested it right back into his passion for music and gear. The fact that he can afford rigs like this every night of his tour, testifies to just how successful he has been as a musician. And with all that success, and this much, uncompromised knowledge, he remains grounded, humble and a true fan of the electric guitar. His love for these guitars has preserved their place in history. That's a special thing that so many others have long lost. Where some of these instruments may have gotten into hands where the stories they once told become blurred and lost with time, not so with Bonamassa. I don't have to hope he will always stay this way, because he just will. Decades have held testament to it, and many more will undoubtedly continue to do so. Those guitars have found a home with Joe that will one day be as historical as the stories he has so lovingly unearthed and shared with us in this video. Such a cool guy. From one musician to another (if he even sees this), you give me great hope and faith that music, success, humanity and humility can cohabit the same creative ecosphere, Joe. This video was brilliant.

    As of 10:37pm, 4/2/2019 there are 211 very insecure, ignorant or just plain angry loners who selected the ''thumbs down'' . What were you expecting to see when you chose to watch these two thoroughly entertaining people, who are both very good at what they do? Regardless, Joe Bonamassa is an exceptional player, period. That he is helping to keep the torch burning for us blues & blues rock fans, speaks volumes about the guy and the band he has built are all superb players in their own right. Also, John Bollinger is a seriously genuine guy who also loves guitars, know's how to interview people and is knowledgeable beyond the average guitar geek. Both of them are thorough gentlemen in my book. Well done both of them.

    Really funny that he addresses "the elephant in the room" as that was sorta my last straw with him and probably a lot of other people too, already not being that big a fan of what he does. The way he addresses it here, especially after being so genial and convivial throughout, really cleared that up for me and changed my mindset, as well as the hilarious and just dead-on self-aware comment, "I've learned, unfortunately, people wanna hear me over-playing over blues-rock changes... so that's what we do." Now I like the guy all of a sudden.

Whenever I hear someone say he is a Silver spoon in his mouth rich kid, I know with 100% certainty that a guy saying that has no idea what he’s talking about. He’s one of the top players on the planet and his genre and that is indisputable. It’s not even up for debate or one of the stupid discussions over whether or not he has the feel of some guy who has no shops apparently has all kinds of feel. I hate those Arguments because Joe could play as those “feel” guys and make the guitar sound that much better But instead he chose to work as hard as he could and learn everything he could about the guitar. The dumbles aren’t the main tone in his rig. The tweeds are. He only uses the dumbles basically as a super expensive tube screamer lol. He uses them to fill the mid frequencies more. The tweeds though are the main source. Which aren’t super cheap either but less than 5 grand. I have an overrated special and bonamassa wah and run them into a lightly modified 65 DRRI. I run the amp anywhere from 6-8 and get most of my gain from the amp. Work volume and tone knobs on guitar And I achieve very similar tone to in this video just on a way less loud level lol. Volume is the secret to that kind of tone ultimately.

      @@ParkerP29 I don't think that's what he's getting at, Joe has put down things like pedals. Where he owns every amp and guitar people could want to get his sounds. Others need pedals to get the sounds they want because they can't crack a super lead or do multi track recording in a studio. So he came off as kinda upity in regards to gear. I don't think that was his intention, but it was a written interview so you got no tone out of his voice. Atleast that's what I think he was referring to I could obviously be wrong.

      Toxic Potato but you have to consider the other side of the situation too . many modern players into modern styles constantly say things like blues rock needs to die because no one under 65 cares about it when that is just not true I know many poeple who love modern metal and old school blues rock . the poeple we ate talking about here are the fringe fans . I think you would find that the blues dad's are not the majority of joes audience but because of the internet their voices are the only ones heard . I think most of his fans just love good music no matter what the genre and I bet joes record collection is pretty diverse .so I don't think it's fair to label joe or his core fan base as being blues dad's and vintage cork sniffing homos. like wise you get alot of modern players who accuse anyone who prefers vintage gear and vintage music as being a cork sniffer of listening with their eyes but that's just a fringe group as well but it seems the voice of the fringes seem to be heard the loudest . one side is every bit as bad as the other . if people who play guitar are going to attack others for having different preferences then they should find another hobby because guitar is all about preference . I also think it's fucked up that so many people think that if you say you prefer one genre over another or one guitar over another etc. you are saying the other one is shit . just because a person prefers a vintage guitar over a modern one does bot mean they think the modern one is shit . it's like people have forgotten that objectivity exists people need to stop worrying about people who don't like what they like .
