    I always figured that God created Adam as an adult, an active functioning individual. As such, I figured that the world was created as active and functioning, given the appearance of age by its activity, such as a river which has depth already instead of being carved out over the years by natural water. So ya, it makes sense that the earth scientifically appears aged, because that is how it was created.

      Yes, good point, i've thought the same. But i guess as humans and especially scientific intellects have to think logical to try and understand something. The problem with the gap theory is that it does exactly what the Bible says not to do: take away from or add to the Word of God. Once we do that, we're opening a can of worm that can't be closed.

      The gap theory doesn’t take away or add anything, because it’s not a theory get out of you religion/tradition and God will reveal it to you as well. Secondly your taking the add and take away portion of scripture out of context, that passage/warning is talking specifically about the book of Revelation that’s why it’s does not appear anywhere else. Thridly YH TEACHES IN 2 Timothy 2:15 that in order to understand scripture you will have to rightly divide the word meaning to take away and add why because in the Greek language alone the word love has 5 different words with five different meanings, in English Love is one word with one meaning.

      @@pierrelightfoot2669this is one of the reasons why one should at the very least consider gap theory. There’s a few things that can’t be explained with no gap that can’t just go ignored.
      If the angels tasked with protecting the garden were armed with flaming swords and satan and the angels hadn’t fallen yet, what was significant enough to warrant armed angels.
      The point about if God didn’t mention it, it didn’t happen is likewise valid (at least due in part of it being so widely taught and accepted) but now I question if that mentality is derived from misunderstanding and misinterpretation.

    The difficulty with doing science to determine the age of the earth is that science relies on the assumption of uniformitarianism.
    The Bible however presents a very stark discontinuity between the pre- and post- fall eras, suggesting that uniformitarianism will lead to misleading answers.

    • @BibleAnswerMan
      @BibleAnswerMan  3 місяці тому +1

      @LostsTVandRadio Are there not universal constants? Gravity? Speed of light? Can logic be trusted? Basic reliability of sense perception? Cause and effect? None of these can be trusted?

    • @LostsTVandRadio
      @LostsTVandRadio 3 місяці тому +1

      I would certainly hold that logic can be trusted absolutely. Many of the 'universal constants' can be trusted but within certain parameters, and that's the issue.
      Earth scientists rely on natural chronometers, and the interpretation of the observable data in turn relies upon the assumption of uniformitarianism. The most common chronometer is radiometric dating and the interpretation of this requires a number of other assumptions too, all of which can potentially be flawed. My first theological question would be this - before sin entered the world was there any decay (radioactive or otherwise) or were isotopes stable?
      Concerning the speed of light, it does of course vary by medium. Gravity is barely understood - is it the effect of the bending of space-time by mass, is it mediated graviton particles or perhaps both? Certainly its effects are quite well documented but we await any significant progress towards a unified field theory.
      Cause and effect are also problematic in that by using a naturalistic reductionist (scientific) approach no room is allowed for an agent outside of space and time.
      So as a Cambridge-trained earth scientist myself I would always caution against being too swept away by the 'certainties' of pop science.

      There is no such thing as a Gap in Creation. People read into a Bible rather than from it. They also haven't got dictionaries to make word studies of the English words they're reading... the Bible wasn't written in English. The context of Gen.1:1 explains itself in V.5b... "And there was evening and there was morning, one day." Is that so hard to comprehend? It is when people are not satisfied with God and think they are Bible exegetes so to reframe his Word to their limited thinking ability. Nonetheless, the age of the universe is found in Holy Scripture if you're capable and patient to do the homework to learn it. If not, you banish yourself to a darkness you yourself created.

    • @jimmie_g
      @jimmie_g 9 місяців тому

      @@oldmanjoe6808 the age of the universe is not found in Holy Scripture, so that's a false statement. No amount of homework will yield the answer, only a "guesstimate" at best. That's why just about every Christian says "6000 years." A nice round number. Not 5976, not 6024. The gap doesn't have to be read into the Bible and CAN be formed from indirect, scriptural evidence. You say that "the context of Gen.1:1 explains itself in V.5b" yet fail to realize that EVERY single day in Genesis 1 starts with "And God said" and ends with "and the evening and the morning..." That scriptural pattern puts the start of day 1 in Genesis 1:3, not 1:1. In Genesis 1:2, the condition of the Earth is without form and void, with darkness upon the face of the deep. The Earth is said to be without form and void and the heavens without light (darkness) one other time in scripture, Jeremiah 4:23. In the context of that verse it's due to God's judgment (His fierce anger, Jeremiah 4:26). So there is scriptural evidence supporting an Earth without form and void with darkness in relation to God's judgment. When did Satan and his angels fall? It's not revealed in scripture. Regardless of your stance, you have to place their fall somewhere between Genesis 1 and 2 (before the serpent/Satan shows up in Gen. 3). What about their creation? Well, notice Job 38:4-7,
      Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? declare, if thou hast understanding.
      Who hath laid the measures thereof, if thou knowest? or who hath stretched the line upon it?
      Whereupon are the foundations thereof fastened? or who laid the corner stone thereof;
      When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?
      Notice how the morning stars and sons of God (angels) shouted for joy WHEN (not after) God laid the foundations of the earth. When God was in the process of creating the earth, they already existed.
      And then there's 2 Peter 3:3-7. in verses 4-5, Peter mentions that the scoffers are ignorant concerning the beginning of the creation (in saying "all things continue as they WERE from the beginning") and mentions that the heavens (plural) WERE of old AND the earth standing out of the water and in the water. That is the condition of the earth in Genesis 1:2, NOT the flood of Noah's time. Read verses 6 and 7 VERY carefully. Verse 6 says "the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished." That world includes the heavens and earth mentioned in verse 5. The next verse (7) makes that clear: "But the HEAVENS and the EARTH, which are now (as opposed to the heavens and earth which were), by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men." Then Peter mentions the promise of new heavens and a new earth in verse 13 (once again making a distinction between our current heavens and earth). The flood in Noah's time covered the Earth and didn't affect the heavens (plural). When the waters receded and Noah came out of the ark, it was the same Earth and heavens. The entire world didn't perish: Not Noah, his sons, their wives nor all the creatures in the ark with them. In fact, the giants didn't perish either (compare Genesis 6:4 with Deuteronomy 3:11 & Numbers 13:33). By this point, the evidence should be overwhelming.

    3 Reasons why the Genesis GAP is scriptural.
    Primarily, the “Genesis GAP” proposes a GAP OF TIME between Genesis 1:1 and Genesis 1:2. What happened during this gap of time and how long this gap lasted is the real theory. The actual GAP OF TIME is not a theory. The actual GAP OF TIME is a fact supported by scripture. Here are scriptural facts in a nutshell.
    Reason #1 God’s works are perfect
    Reason #2 God is NOT a God of confusion
    Reason #3 The inspired words of Isaiah confirm that God created the heavens and that He did NOT create the earth to be empty (as it is described in Genesis 1:2). Rather, Isaiah says that God fashioned and made (from existing material) the earth to be inhabited.
    Genesis 1:1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
    Deuteronomy 32:3-4 I will proclaim the name of the LORD. Oh, praise the greatness of our God! He is the Rock, his works are perfect, ….
    1 Corinthians 33:14a For God is not a God of confusion but of peace.
    Isaiah 45:18 For this is what the LORD says -- he who created the heavens, he is God; he who fashioned and made the earth, he founded it; he did not create it to be empty but formed it to be inhabited -- he says: "I am the LORD, and there is no other.
    Genesis 1:2 The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.
    Therefore, Genesis 1:1 describes the creation of a perfect creator and Genesis 1:2 describes destruction and a confused state. These two should not be conflated. Scripture has far more to say about this if you are interested.

    The implications here for mankind's place in history haven't been mentioned yet but are rather significant. Supposing the hard stop in Hebrew between 1.1 into 1.2, where the created earth is described as "laid to waste" and in "ruin" means that this is simply the manner in which God chose to create our planet ... well it's an odd choice of both words and/or engineering, but it tells us that He's done all that He has, just for us. We are indeed the first-love darling of creation! If however, one considers that a King of Tyre-type figure, who was created blameless as a guardian cherub until he lifted his head in rebellion and was hence reduced to "ashes on earth" (Ezekiel 28) ... well then, maybe a previously perfect earth was initially made for another people, prince or purpose? In which case, we might just be part of an even more incredible story ... of this folly being played out with our stepping in as lowly but eligible heirs in place of a disgraced usurper, playing out the final days of his own self-indictment and looking to discredit mankind in the process. No fear or science here, just questions about scripture to consider 🙏 Thanks goes to the late Dr. Donald Barnhouse for his book "The Invisible War" and the spirit-filled insights shared for understanding.

    Gap Theory is just that, a theory that cannot be proven and, therefore cannot be false. There are some of us who are more curious, which is okay, and we want to understand the bible in depth. There is no denying something happened between Genesis 1:1 and 1:2. Based on what I heard from multiple apologists, the conclusion I reached is the gap is not millions of years, but more like tens of thousands of years.

    • @RachelLWolfe
      @RachelLWolfe 6 місяців тому

      I agree that something did indeed happen between Genesis 1:1 and 1:2. Also, the gap of time could even be as little as 200 or 500 years. It need not be in the thousands, even for the theory to be correct.
      Some can't even agree on whether or not the seven days were seven literal, 24 hour days, or each day being 1,000 years.
      I personally subscribe to the idea that it was seven literal days.
      Mental gymnastics are not necessary in order for the gap theory to be true and accurate. There are plenty of verses and passages throughout the Bible that support it. A six minute video isn't a sufficient enough time to thoroughly cover this topic.

      The gap theory is an illegitimate doctrinal imposition upon the biblical text. It is a failed attempt to resolve the biblical text with the geological evidence for an old earth. No exegetically justifiable reason to read a finite but extensive period of time between any of the verses in Genesis 1. Nicely done Hank. Many thanks. Those who believe in a gap theory are making a mockery of our Lord when He said “But from the beginning of the creation, God made them male and female.” Mark 10:6. He is all powerful so He could have made everything in an instant but chose to do it the way it’s outlined in Genesis and Exodus. It makes no sense to refer to it as “the beginning of the creation” if there were billions or even just millions or thousands of years before the creation of mankind as expressed by the various gap theories. So, Jesus is most definitely claiming that the world cannot have existed for very long prior to Adam and Eve compared to the time elapsed between their making and the time of Jesus here on earth some 2,000 years ago from our time.

    Hanegraff begins with an insult: the Gap Theory is driven wholly by fear.
    Such an ascription of motives is arrogant and irrelevant to a coherent discussion.
    Second point is more insult, more ascription of motives: "The Gap is wholly made up. It's made up out of whole cloth."
    "It is an ad hoc argument designed to resolve a perceived conflict that doesn't actually exist."
    Finally, a reasonable proposition: "If you want to find out about the age of the earth, do good science."

      @biblicus8204 Satan is a noncorporeal being and special language never directly applies, special language such as an object falling downwards to the ground. Rather, Satan’s fall is a fall from a right relationship to God. It is because of Satan’s rebellion that upon his own accord he persists in opposing God and the things of God. When we say, "I sinned and fell away from God," we do not mean we are physically laying on the ground somewhere; rather, we men that we have transgressed against the Lord in some way, like disobeyed a commandment, and that we are resistant to coming alongside God and experiencing life with God, making His plans and purposes our plans and purposes. The same problem with Satan. Satan rejects God, and opposes all of God's plans and purposes for the creation, particularly the angelic heavenly host.

"And there was evening and there was morning, one day." Is that so hard to comprehend? It is when people are not satisfied with God and think they are Bible exegetes so to reframe his Word to their limited thinking ability. • @JamesThomas-dn6hz
      @JamesThomas-dn6hz 2 роки тому

      Yeah, he does a terrible job.
      I would've started with the definition of the words; form: to make or cause to exist, to shape (God formed man vs 2:7) and void: empty vacant, not occupied with visible matter (a strongs search of void reveals that the Bible uses void to describe something that is empty, or to not exist)
      #1 thing gap theorists like to do is ignore those words. The BIBLE literally says the world has no shape and no physical matter. The argument should end there, sadly it doesn't because people don't want to apply sound hermeneutics, they just want to believe Christian psyfi.
      So we move on:
      Then they go to "created" in vs 21 and say, see God didn't create anything till day 5. Well God does use the word create here to refer to living creatures which He separates from all His other creation. He does use formed throughout the Bible though to refer to man's creation, Rom 9:20, 1 Tim 2:13, Prov 26:10...I can go on as there's over 31 instances. So He uses create here to show that living life needs to be created by a creator.
      Next we move to "replenish" which is in vs 28. It is a transitive verb, which by definition means, to fill, to stock with numbers, to finish. Why the word "replenish" and not "bring forth abundantly" because God makes the distinction that man is different than all His other creation. So He uses a different word to show the importance He places on man.
      The idea that a race of fallen angels resided on earth is fanciful and fun, but it makes no sense. Why did God create a world for fallen angels? Why would He flood that world, after he made it for a group of fallen angels, which by there nature were already in sin against God. Flooding that world didn't kill them, so it seems like a pointless punishment. And given that angels aren't man, the earth isn't being refilled when man is created because it was never filled with man.
      No we can go through 2 peter, Ezekiel, jeremiah, rev 21 and all the rest and show how the verses have been twisted, but what's the point. If you reject that biblically sound hermeneutics, then nothing I can say will show you how crazy the argument is. I would just say, preach Jesus and the power of His atoning blood. It's all that really matters. God will set one of us straight someday soon, we can only hope. 🙏 God Bless and receive the word with all readiness of mind and search it.

      @BibleAnswerMan many have provided scripture that supports the gap theory.
      What basis do you have, based on scripture, that gap theorists are wrong? Since you are the one making the statement that the gap never happened, and that gap theorists are wrong, the burden of proof lies on your shoulders, sir, to prove your point using scripture.

      @@BibleAnswerMan Did Satan fall before Adam?

  • @RachelLWolfe
    @RachelLWolfe 6 місяців тому

    The reasons posited in this video are weak.
    The argument that the Bible does not implicitly mention a gap in time in the beginning is disingenuous at best, seeing as that we don't have a lot of details about a lot of things that took place, yet we just know them to be true. We know Jesus had a childhood between His birth and the time we see Him in the temple at the age of 12. We know he had things going on in His life between the age of 12, and the start of His ministry, but the Bible is mum about the details of His childhood. We don't have details about every single moment of His life, but it doesn't mean nothing happened during that time, simply because it's not covered in scripture.
    We don't have details about every single living creature God created, but we know it happened because they exist.
    To my knowledge, dinosaurs aren't in the Bible, but we have found their fossil remains, so we know they roamed the earth once upon a time.
    We don't have any information really, in the Bible, about other peoples and cultures that existed on the Earth during the Biblical times, but we find evidence of their existence throughout history.
    We do, however, have glimpses into what transpired in the very beginning when Satan fell, and took a third of the angels with him.
    In Luke 10:18, Jesus says He saw satan fall like lightning from heaven. That happened in the beginning. Lucifer was created with the rest of the angels, prior to the existence of the Earth and prior to the existence of Adam and Eve.
    ‭‭Job‬ ‭38:4‭-‬7‬ ‭NKJV‬‬
    [4] “Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? Tell Me, if you have understanding. [5] Who determined its measurements? Surely you know! Or who stretched the line upon it? [6] To what were its foundations fastened? Or who laid its cornerstone, [7] When the morning stars sang together, And all the sons of God shouted for joy?"
    The sons of God were the angels. Lucifer started out as a "good" angel, and scripture talks about his beauty, etc. Lucifer means star of the morning, light bearer or bringer of light. So he was there from the beginning, before the Earth was ever created.
    Satan had already fallen when Adam and Eve were created, hence him tempting Eve, and telling her that she and Adam can be like God if they eat the forbidden fruit. Remember that Satan also wanted to be like God in the beginning.
    ‭‭Ezekiel‬ ‭28:12‭-‬17‬ tells us of the fall of Satan. This all happened before Adam and Eve were on the Earth.
    [12] “Son of man, take up a lamentation for the king of Tyre, and say to him, ‘Thus says the Lord God: “You were the seal of perfection, Full of wisdom and perfect in beauty. [13] You were in Eden, the garden of God; Every precious stone was your covering: The sardius, topaz, and diamond, Beryl, onyx, and jasper, Sapphire, turquoise, and emerald with gold. The workmanship of your timbrels and pipes Was prepared for you on the day you were created. [14] “You were the anointed cherub who covers; I established you; You were on the holy mountain of God; You walked back and forth in the midst of fiery stones. [15] You were perfect in your ways from the day you were created, Till iniquity was found in you. [16] “By the abundance of your trading You became filled with violence within, And you sinned; Therefore I cast you as a profane thing Out of the mountain of God; And I destroyed you, O covering cherub, From the midst of the fiery stones. [17] “Your heart was lifted up because of your beauty; You corrupted your wisdom for the sake of your splendor; I cast you to the ground, I laid you before kings, That they might gaze at you."
    There are more scriptures than this that support a "gap theory", but you have to rightly divide the word. You have to use discernment.

    God created us the way he did is so He could communicate with us in a manner we understand. His revealed and inspired Word has not changed, but our understanding of everything else He has created has increased. As our understanding increases, we find new understanding and agreement from His Word. Gap Theorists simply are presenting a different understanding from scripture that happens to align with science more than before.

  • @jimmie_g

    Reason number 1 is simply false. While maybe true for some proponents, it's certainly not true for all, so to say "wholly" is simply a lie and disingenuous. The gap could've been only 100 years or 1000 years, in which case it would still be a young earth. My belief in a gap between Genesis 1:1 and Genesis 1:2 has nothing to do with the age of the universe, science, geology or evolutionists. It's because of the overwhelming scriptural evidence, which I'll present to refute reason 2.
    Reason number 2 is also false. It is not wholly made up out of cloth. You say there is no mention of a gap anywhere in scripture, but then at 4:27, you say that humanity is creations crowning jewel. I could argue that there is no mention of us being creations crowning jewel anywhere in scripture. Or perhaps you drew that conclusion from indirect scriptural evidence just like those of us who believe in a gap between Genesis 1:1 and Genesis 1:2. In Genesis 1, every single day starts with "And God said" and ends with "and the evening and the morning..." That scriptural pattern puts the start of day 1 in Genesis 1:3.
    Whereupon are the foundations thereof fastened? or who laid the corner stone thereof;
    When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?
    Notice how the morning stars and sons of God (angels) shouted for joy WHEN (not after) God laid the foundations of the earth. When God was in the process of creating the earth, they already existed.
    And then there's 2 Peter 3:3-7. in verses 4-5, Peter mentions that the scoffers are ignorant concerning the beginning of the creation (in saying "all things continue as they WERE from the beginning," Genesis 1:1) and mentions that the heavens (plural) WERE of old AND the earth standing out of the water and in the water. That is the condition of the earth in Genesis 1:2, NOT the flood of Noah's time. Read verses 6 and 7 VERY carefully. Verse 6 says "the world (not the earth) that then was, being overflowed with water, perished." That world includes the heavens and earth mentioned in verse 5. The next verse (7) makes that clear: "But the HEAVENS and the EARTH, which are now (as opposed to the heavens and the earth which were), by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men." Then Peter mentions the promise of new heavens and a new earth in verse 13 (once again making a distinction between our current heavens and earth).
    Reason number 3 is honestly irrelevant to the argument. The argument of whether or not "created" and "made" can be interchangeable doesn't prove or disprove the gap.

      @Mike Myers In Genesis 1:28, the Hebrew verb wəkibšuhā [וְכִבְשֻׁ֑הָ] is a command to “subdue” or “dominate.” ESV, NASB, NRSV, NKJV, & CSB read “subdue.” Adam and Eve were to tend and cultivate the Earth and all the creatures because they were endowed with the Image of God. Hank...you still haven't explained where the darkness came from in Genesis Chapter 1, and verse 2. Your postulating sounds very authoritative and flowery and all, but it doesn't amount to a hill of beans. How about Isaiah 14:12-21 and Ezekiel 28:12-19...how does that fit in? Doesn't scripture count at all to you? Seems like Jeremiah 4:23 is attempting to ring a bell in someone's belfry. These passages actually mean something, and I don't think God is just filling in the blanks to just take up space. Isaiah 45:18 is making a point about Genesis 1:2, that fits this subject, and deserves a hearing. Gaps are found in the Bible in many places...what Bible are you reading? How about the gap found in Daniel concerning the seventy weeks? How about the gap found between the 1st coming of Jesus and the 2nd coming? Your reasoning is faulty...makes no sense. Of course, you teach that the 2nd coming came at 70 A.D. which is completely false. Sorry, but you lost me on this one.

      @MichaelAndrews-uy1gl Darkness in Gensis 1:2 is simply the absence of light. The waters were chaotic and darkened like the stormy sea at night. This sets up God’s declaration, “Let there be light.” We need not think a prior cataclysm had taken place that resulted in the formless void darkness. Rather, from nothing, the very absence of light, God brought forth light. See www.equip.org/article/the-gap-theory-of-genesis-12/ and www.equip.org/bible_answers/gaps-genealogies-genesis/
