  • If you are dealing with an arthritis flare up, complete rest is NOT the answer...❌
Gentle movement can make a significant impact on the pain related to a flare up. A flare up typically is defined as a period of increased and significant pain that lasts hours, days, or even weeks. An arthritis flare up can be tied to overdoing a certain activity, increasing your overall volume of activity, poor sleep habits, high levels of stress, etc.
One of the big mistakes people tend to make is to avoid movement when they are experiencing higher levels of pain. This actually could make pain worse. Rarely is complete rest required. Making sure you find GENTLE movement is important though.
In this video, you'll learn from Dr. Alyssa Kuhn, physical therapist and osteoarthritis specialist as she shows you the three best exercises to do if you are experiencing pain from an arthritis flare up.

Good morning Alyssa. I cannot tell you how much I appreciate your help. I was told I had arthritis in my knee and they offered injections etc. NO ONE offered help through exercises. It has awoken me EVERY MORNING for a year with intense pain which made me cry. Since I started watching your videos and following along, the pain has moved from my knee into my thigh. This tells me that it is more of a hamstring or connective tissue issue. My knee now doesn't hurt at all!!! And finally, in this video when you say it is usually TEMPORARY, I feel so HOPEFUL that this is fixable. Thank you so so much. You are relatable and explain it all so clearly. I truly appreciate your help!

Thank you for saying that a flare up is generally temporary and that regression isn't the default. My mind immediately tells me "you're back to square one again". Now I have another monologue. ;-)

You help me so much, I have OA in my left knee and the right knee won't be far behind. Waiting to see a surgeon that will take some time. I toured Boston this past weekend and the worse thing was the standing in place listening to the guide, it was killer...now I know I can swing side to side and that might help. Please keep these videos coming.

I searched for my issue and found your channel. I am trying to help myself after I played with grandchild and swing my hip. I think I crashed something inside. After 3 days my walking wad was fine. Somehow I find it hard to lift that leg as I normally did. I am a very flexible person and find it weard now. I decided to live with this and try some exercises. I am not into doctors and tests abd definitely not surgeries. So I am browsing now through your exercises. Thanks.

Hi Alyssa, I appreciate your videos and do try to move my joints gently as you recommend, but my joint issues are due to RA and OA. I understand that these videos are mostly for OA sufferers but am hoping you can add some advice in your presentations for RA and other AI Arthritis sufferers. I have also been dx'd with Fibro. My pain can be from overdoing it but most often is due to an RA flare. There isn't much healing happening in my damaged joints. I understand strengthening my muscles and ligaments is important and do what I can but walking is difficult due to severe foot deformities. I was dx'd prior to biologics and DMARDs so I unfortunately have a lot of joint damage and a number of artificial joints. Can you help a girl out? Thanks. ❤
