I’ve been running Dolby Atmos 7.2.4 for over a year and a half after upgrading from 5.2.2. On the right content, it is truly spectacular. I think your video is an excellent recap for anyone considering upgrading as we head into the holiday season. Very well done Michael.
if you decode into DTS NEURAL X, it will upscale a lower channel encoded sound track into whatever your system supports. for example, a 5.1 will upscale to 7.1.4. the SURR will be bridged to the SURR BACK, HEIGHT 2 and the FRONTS will bridge to the HEIGHT 1. sounds pretty weird at first but it's an awesome experience.
Best vid I've seen today on this as I'm about to take the dive. Thanks for being so concise and clear and not wasting any time showing off your setup lol. Cheers!
I just bought (2) Klipsch CDT-5800-C II in ceiling speakers to test out. If I like them I will buy (4) more for a complete 9.1.6 setup. I can't wait to have Dolby Atmos!
Hi there youthman. I met Larry from svs and told him I was subscribed to your channel. He mentioned to me that you were a youth minister . I thought that was awesome! I am a pulpit preacher. Looks like lovers of God love home theater as well.
We talked some previously, I think I am going to hold off until some time down the road to decide on adding Atmos or not, right now we don't have much content for it, our collection is mostly DVD with some Blu-Ray movies. We ARE buying mostly Blu-Ray and DVD combo when we buy new movies though. We don't have 4k TV or devices yet. So, I'm in a fairly small space , about 11-12' wide, approx 20' from TV wall to my couch. The room sounds good acoustically, not too many flat surfaces besides what floor is open. Ceiling is open joists and blocks of the 2md floor, rough cut lumber, exterior 3 walls are logs. Current system is a 90's Sony 5 ch reciever that "tries" to make Dolby surround out of 2ch RCA audio....it sometimes sounds ok, sometimes it is completely spastic. Speakers are Bose Acoustimass 10, also from the 90s. It is enough for the space for TV and games, but a bit lacking for music. For now, I am going to upgrade to the best Denon AVR I can get, lookimg at the AVR-S750H and X1500H, I've seen both on sales for $300-350. This would give me the option of 7.1/7.2 later, or a pair of B speakers for music. I removed my large 3 way speakers from this room due to space, and I miss that B pair.of speakers when listening to Music. After the AVR I will save for speakers, looking at a few budget options. Considering Polk T15 x4 , T30 center, and their PSW10 10" sub for $130. Later I may add to this if I find it to be good enough, to make it 7ch, or add those B speakers for music. I'd love a set of Klipsch speakers, that will have to be a dream for later, amd this setup could always be passed on to one of my 3 kids. So, do you think one of those Denon AVR units would be good enough? Should I be concerned about the HDCP 2.2 if I score an older X1500H unit? Lastly, do you think those Polk speakers would be a decent setup for now, and an upgrade from these tiny Bose speakers and the Acoustimass bass module? Can you recommend a pair of bookshelf speakers bigger than the Polk T15, but smaller than a set that had 12" woofers, for adding warmth and quality when listening to music, preferably not SUPER expensive and something that wouldn't be too big to be mountable to the wall? ( a can fab some sort of mount/shelf, and it is a fairly solid wall as far.as holding weight, it is logs) Thanks for your videos! Sorry about the length of this post, hopefully that will help you to be able to understand my situation better. Looking forward to any advice, and to watching more videos. Thanks again.
Thank YOU! I have had a 7.2.2 Atmos setup for about a year now. Yours was the best Atmos explanation video I have watched to date. It is exactly as you tell it. Great Video!
One thing I discovered is although I had it set up for atmos I happened to notice it was set to fh which turns out to mean front height. When I changed it to ceiling speakers made a huge difference. Just saying obviously should make sure whichever type of atmos either upfiring etc to tell the receiver the configuration you are actually using.
Very good video. Please inform my , if from my tv ,can i have dolby atmos atmosphere to my room ,with a home theater dolby atmos receiver .Must even the tv suport the dolby atmos?
If you are watching movies on a 4K player, it sends the sound to your AVR and the video to your TV. If you have a smart TV, most apps do not support Atmos. An Nvidia Shield and AppleTV 4K does support Atmos
@@Youthman Another question. My tv not supporting dolby atmos. If i watching netflix ,a movie with dolby atmos on my tv ,and my AV amplifier support dolby atmos, will I have a dolby atmos atmosphere?
Would you cover using headphones for Dolby Atmos? I find many for gaming but little mention of the best headphones for listening to movies and music. I have tried high-end Bose and Sony and hear the Atmos effect but wondering if I am missing the best true atmos effect.
Ive been working on saving $ and finding the right sound for my setup. I currently have a 7.4 with assistance of mini-dsp. At the time, my plan was to get the best sound during the Dolby True HD/ DTS master era right before the new codecs became mainstream. I haven't experienced Atmos yet, but I'm curious what would be the best ROI in terms of sound quality. Atmos or upgrading to older AV tech that offer 11 or 12 channels. I know sound is subjective, but if anyone had the option to have either Atmos 5.2.4 vs 11/12.4 which would you chose??
I currently have a 5.1.4 set up. I’m there with you on saving money, I don’t know how I can share my log in info with you to a website I use. I get huge discounts on their equipment. If you’re interested send me a message. Currently I’m running Polk audio speakers. hint hint
Go for the Dolby Atmos set up. When it comes to movie audio encoding there are generally only the following formats: - 2/ 2.1 channel stereo (2 or 3 discrete channels) - Dolby digital 5.1 (six discrete channels) - Dolby Atmos/DTS X (between 8 [5.1.2] and 13 [7.2.4] discrete channels) Any receiver that has more than a 5.1 set up and is not certified Atmos or DTSX is ‘faking’ the extra speakers using the processing within the amplifier to convert the 5 channels of Dolby digital into 7, or 9, or 11. Movies were never encoded with more than a 5.1 mix until Atmos and DTS X came along.
I’ve heard 4 ceiling speakers are highly recommended, however, I’m going to be setting up in a small space (and budget) so, I picked up a 7.2 AVR that can be set up for 7.1 or 5.1.2 (or 7.2 or 5.2.2), I’ll be able to put speakers in the ceiling. I had wanted to do 4 overhead, but, I thought 2 might be better than none.
Youthman yeah, those AVRs are out of my price range. I was looking at Denon because I’ve heard good things about them, sound quality, Audyssey built in, 3 yr warranty, last year’s 2500H went on sale for $339 new, otherwise I was looking at the 1500 or 1600, but, wanted the second HDMI out on the 2500, (eArc, (on 2019 models), is not important to me.)
Recently updated to 5.2, planning to go for 5.2.2 ( avr limited ) hope that works out . All with klipsch. Worth it or not ? Source mostly from Netflix / prime. Advice .. Thanks
I have a question. If I have a dolby atmos audio system, but my blu ray player is not dolby atmos, will I still get the atmos effect from the speakers?
The good thing about Dolby Atmos is that the setup isn't a waste anyways. It's not like the speakers won't be used whether the content has Atmos or not. Dolby Surround emulation is very good at using those speakers for non-atmos content.
I currently have DALI alteco c-1 on top of my floorstanders as upfiring but i read that they arent atmos-certified... Will it make any Difference if i buy upfiring ones that are certified like Heco AM 200? All my other speakers are DALI tho
@@elbrujomaya Thats very bad advice, not only are you affecting the sound that was meant to surround you, but you will also be adding height information wheres its not supposed to be.
I have a 5.1.4 setup and I use dolby to upmix native dolby content and auro 3d to upmix dts content. It does a decent job on some soundtracks and not so good on others, but i never find it taking away from the experience so i always have them on.
Hello Youthman I am having 11.1 Dolby atmos svs speakers Front svs ultra , ultra center, prime bookshelf for side surrounds, prime satellite for back surround, and 2pairs of prime elevation for atmos, subwoofer SB 4000, marantz 8805 AV preocessor, anthem mca power amps Now I want to add another subwoofer from svs pb series pb3000, is it ok to add it or else I have to stick to another sub sb4000, kindly suggest me, as I want to have a experience with the pb 3000.
Atmos isn't just about the height channel. It also allows non-channel-restricted experiences. Dolby atmos works a lot more like games have worked for decades. Dolby atmos defines a 3D listening environment, and maps sounds within that environment, and then mathematically determines which speaker(s) to play them on/in and at what amplitude. This allows a far better listening experience as, not only is it more granular than just have 7 distinct listening sources, but also facilitating unique room designs to be accounted for, given proper receiver configuration. For example, if you have an elongated living room and decided to set your speakers up in such an elongated fashion, you can configure your receiver to account for this, and atmos facilitates a better compensation for this. Further, not every room needs that height channel. Smaller rooms will likely have too many reflections to reasonably utilize those height channels. It will only be in more isolated sounds that these height channels will be audible.
My 4 Atmos speakers are front and rear height mounted (therefore not in-ceiling). I would like your suggestion on what can be more enjoyable sound-wise in movies, between these two set-ups please: 5.1.4 or 7.1.2
My preference is to have (4) overhead speakers. With only one pair of Atmos speakers, you are unable to have objects pan from the front to the back in your height channels. Dolby Atmos is all about having proper angles. When possible, installing Atmos speakers on the ceiling will provide better separation between your bed layer and the Atmos speakers. Take a look at this video by Steven Smith of Home Theater Gurus - ua-cam.com/video/HZYQIDer2C8/v-deo.html
Do i need to purchase dolby atmos speakers or can i use my existing speakers combined my dolby atmos av receiver ? I have 2 front, 2 rear wireless, 1 centre and a sub-woofer
Youthman Thanks for answering! I actually have a 7.2 setup (2 front, 1 center, 2 surround & 2 rear. I don’t have the option for ceiling placement. Can I make the rear or side surrounds be my Atmos speakers? If so, how is it determined? Is it a setting on the receiver?
You could make the rear speakers Atmos but leaving them in the same location wouldn’t work. They either need to be higher and angled down or mounted on your ceiling. Then you would change the speaker connection to the surround back to the Atmos channels and change the setting in your receiver (usually under Amp Assign). Honestly it sounds like it’s not the ideal set up as you are likely making a lot of compromises. It might be best to stick with what you have
Hey Youthman, i have a onkyo 676 receiver and a sony upb x800 4k player. I'm running it out of my receiver in 5.1 to the hdmi 4 arc on my sony tv. I can't get dolby atmos only dts neutral x
If my seating is up against the back wall of the room is 4 ceiling speakers an option? Or am I forced to only use 2 ceiling speakers (placed 45 degrees from seating position)? I was also hoping to get more info on how to calculate speaker positioning
Dolby website has all of the recommended positions, angles etc. with your seats on the rear wall, 4 Atmos will not make much difference as the front pair would be several feet in front of you
@@Youthman thank you sir for the reply. I'll check Dolby's site .. I'm confused as to why 4 ceiling speakers won't be much of a difference from 2. Is it because the distance between the front ceiling speakers and speakers directly above my head won't be much?
I recently added Dolby atmos speakers but my receiver only handles 2 not 4. Besides the streaming platforms where else can i watch real atmos demos? Thanks✌
Hey Youthman! I have a question: what is the difference between REAR ATMOS and FRONT ATMOS? do they give two different type of sounds? Or is it the same sound on both channels? Is it very compulsory for a room to have both rear and front atmos speakers? Is front atmos enough? I have a 6m long x 4m wide x 2.8m high acoustically treated room with 5.1.2 setup and was wondering if i really should add rear atmos (though i really want to!) My atmos speakers are elevated on wall and inclined at 30 degrees to the sitting areas. Please do advise ☺️
Yes each of the Atmos speakers have their own, discreet information. I always recommend 4 for small to medium size rooms with up to two rows of seating and 6 Atmos speakers for larger rooms
Hey Youthman great video I am currently using an ELITE SC-72 in a 9. 2 set up,love the receiver but it’s missing Atmos my room is probably big enough to add 2 ceiling Atmos speakers,I am using separate amps for my front speakers about 200watts each plus 2 Klipsch powered subs,I was thinking about upgrading but switching receivers and adding 2 speakers will I hear a difference, yes I have a 4K Blu-ray and my system sounds awesome
I own Denon x4500 powering 5.1.4 setup and watched Mad Max Fury Road few days ago. A scene when Furiosa drives War Pig, the guy jumps on top of the cabin, knocks the roof while she opens the sunroof...omg I just looped that scene for next 10 minutes 8-) or that one when Joe knocks out the shotgun out of grandma hands and the pump fires up...that falling dust directly from my ceiling...oh boy! Atmos is so cool
You have provided me a good video. I do not watch very many movies and don't collect any my question is are there any benefits to listening to good music. Are there any CDs that have Atmos encoding?
some important factors to consider with DOLBY ATMOS.. 1. consider the room size and dimensions.. if it's a smallish room 10ft x 10ft 5.1.2 would be more than sufficient.. 2. Not everybody can cut holes into their ceiling to fit overhead speakers.. especially if you're renting that home.. In those situations fitting height speakers would be best (speakers on or close to the wall). 3. if u don't wanna drill holes into the wall (due to been a rental home). Then put ear level speakers (front stereo & rear surrounds) on speaker stands. 4. buy acoustic foam tiles and position them behind speakers.. that way you'll not bother neighbours..5. A tip re height speakers.. you can use normal bookshelf speakersif you do.. turn them upside down so the tweeter is on the bottom.. then place on speaker brackets.. angling the speaker down aimed at the viewing position.. a handy way to do that is sit down on your chosen chair / sofa.. then hold a torch (flashlight) to the side of your ear then point the light at the spot you want the sound to come from. Mark it with some tape.. Then drill a hole for the speaker bracket.. if you intend to mount the speakers.. Do the same technique with allthe other ear level speakers Front stereo and rear surrounds.. Then you'll get the optimum sound quality as they'll be posistioned where they should be.
need a little help here. have a Denon AVR-X3700H using my gaming computer as a Entertainment movie pc using the digital optical Port how do I establish Dolby Atmos on my PC I want it for my home theater not just for headphones please help me with my situation because I need help !!! what do i need????
Re streaming - remember not only does the streaming company have to support it (Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hulu etc) but also the streaming device you are using as well. So for instance I have an NVIDIA Shield TV that supports Dolby Atmos using the Amazon app but does not support it on the Netflix app, or to be more precise Netflix have not enabled Atmos playback on the their NVIDIA Sheild Android TV app.
You definitely can. I've been using the miniDSP UMIK-1 Omni-directional mic with REW to level match my speakers and measuring frequency response of my subwoofers.
One is above you, the other is in front of you. Plus if you look at Dolby’s recommended angles, most height speakers are not positioned in those recommended angles
Hello, really like your articles!! Pleas answer one question for me? Am going to hook up 4 Klipsch R-625 FA speakers, and wish to connect the Atoms speakers in the 4 towers. I DO need a 9.1/9.2 amp? OR I can make it work with a 7.1 amp? Will be running only one sub-woofer; Klipsh SPL-100. Our tv den is small (12 x 12). While I got you here, which is better for us to use as a center speaker: Klipsch RP640D, or a Klipsch R-34C? Hope you can answer and help two old people.
Thank you for the kind words Fred. You will need two channels for each speaker so a 7.1 will not work for your setup. You will need a 9.1 receiver. You will connect the front left and right atmos channels on the receiver to the top speaker terminal on your front left and right speaker and then do the same for the back two speakers. Are you planning on buying a center channel speaker? The RP-640D has matching drivers and tweeter to the R-625 FA so that would likely sound the best for your setup, even though the R-34C has a better titanium tweeter. Hope that helps.
Youth man you're the man not only do you speak very articulately but you sound cool doing it, if I can swap my accent with anyone, it would be with you but all the same even though Dolby Atmos is slightly better than the rest, By far the most crucial aspect in a audio soundtrack no matter what movie you are watching is the Way It Is 'mastered', regardless what decoding you're using PCM, Dolby d, Dolby d + or even Dolby Atmos!!!
Thank you very much for the kind words. You are absolutely correct there are Dolby Atmos discs that are poorly mastered. I just really value the platform in the format. When done correctly, it’s incredible
Lets say i have 9 channels on my reciever.. using 7.1.2. Could i connect an extra pair of atmos speakers to 7.1.4 or do i have to upgrade to a 11 channel reciever?
Depends on the receiver, some receivers like Denon avrx4500 can process 11 channels but only has 9 built in amplifiers so it could work with that amplifier, while many others only process 9 channels.
Bought an denon avr x1500h on sale because i wanted Surround Sound. During setup I noticed it has dolby atmos Support and used the remaining two chanels as atmos speakers and even witch two speakes it is amazing to hear sound from above. Love it
Another great video, Youthman! 👏 I also installed 4 x Klipsch CDT-5800-C II in my home theater. I just love Dolby Atmos! It's the best upgrade I've ever done. I only wish I had the size of your room. 😁 Keep up the good work!
I wish we would get more dtsx content because it's more accessible simply because you actually do not need the height speakers for the object based decoding to kick in where as atmos wont work until you get height speakers.
@@TECHNDJ I honestly play my music as it was intended for playback. If that playback is for stereo then I play it in stereo if it's a 5.1 track I play it in 5.1 then I play it in 5.1. I don't like to stretch my music in to more channels than it was intended for because it weakens the sound. Like nothing sounds worse than taking a stereo track and playing it in 5.1 and having all your sound come out of the center speaker. Just play your music in the format it was intended for and it will sound a hell of a lot better.
@@sleazypig yes ur right.. some music will actually be good in PURE DIRECT... but some made by AR Rahman, Harris bro sounds extraordinary in Neo-X.. even with some time u can expect sound from height...
@@keepingupwiththejones2933,You have four Atmos speakers and thinking about adding two more, you have more than enough space for a second sub. Two subs even out the bass in the room (not just louder). I had one sub for 15 years before two became popular so I know the difference. Buy one if I'm wrong, return it. You can thank me later.
@@keepingupwiththejones2933, on Youthman's channel we help each other, I don't know you or your level of knowledge. You responded to me first with "More is better with Atmos. I started with 2", you don't think that everyone knows more is better? But I didn't respond with sarcasm. It's cool, only trying to help.
@@keepingupwiththejones2933, my comment was "I love my 7.2 setup", that means seven speakers and two subs. I was telling Youthman he convinced me to add Atmos speakers to my 7.2 setup. Thanks for your concern.
Another good movie to listen to is Ready Player One...the scene when they're racing and when King Kong comes on the screen, you literally here the sound coming from the upper right side Soundstage. Another good set of demo worthy Dolby Atmos content is the Star Wars saga on 4k blu-ray. X-wings and tie-fighters fly over your head and you can hear the lightsaber battles in a 3D sound space.
Nice video, thank you for your tips, I been looking for that movie, Gravity Diamond Luxe Edition, where I can find that movie??? I find 3, but they ask way too much...
No place is too small, they build it into headphones. Speakers are awesome knick-knacks holders for a small place anyway, just get a bunch and say screw it.
Dude u can go as small as two atmos speakers. Place them right above you at top of side walls pointing at you or on front wall above your mains pointing at you. Ive seen a 5.1.2 setup make this work in a very small dorm room with a futon up against the wall for seating! You dont have to go all 7.1.4 or above. Spacing those channels properly is the key.
@@battousai412 I guess what I should have said was that I'm retired and living on Old Age Security and to upgrade all my gear for Atmos just isn't worth it for me in my little space. It's the thing called deminitive return.
Great vid as always i have a 7.1 set up and in 2 minds if to keep that with my new amp or turn into 5.1.2 i would still watch all my great movies in atmos sound regardless which way i go hacksaw ridge and alita godzila my fav sound tracks

Great video mate, can I ask you what your opinion is on the lg sl10yg soundbar? I know there are better soundbars out there, just I want to get an lg to go with my lg tv, is it still ok for atmos? Thanks in advance mate
Unfortunately I have not tested any soundbars and the ones that I have heard in stores were not very exciting. Soundbars will always be a compromise when it comes to performance but if space is limited, they can provide a descent sound
Youthman, I ran this buy Channa. Thought I'd get your thoughts. With the atmos speakers shouldn't they be timbre matched? Have a 5.1 set of Def Tech bp 3000 series Id love to add atmos speakers to that setup 2. :)
@@Youthman agreed, just keep thinking of that Cloney movie were they pan his voice thru all those channels would create a timbre problem. Maybe not atleast at my age lol :)
Michael Randa You have to remember that one sound is coming from above or behind us, our ears are not designed to hear that the same way they do when sound is coming from in front of us or beside us due to the shape of our ears. Which is another reason why it’s not as critical to timber match your Atmos or your surrounds
hi youthman you never mentioned if a dolby atmos enabled tv is needed as well for true dolby atmos set up? why some tvs are dolby atmos enabled and some are not ?
@@Youthman Love that you have Ready Player One in your favorites list for Atmos, it's my "show off" movie for it. Also now with Disney+ the opening scene for The Force Awakens has some nice subtle use for the environment.
My biggest annoyance is DTS X coming late to the party. I am such a fan of dts that I'd buy a movie just because it was DTS-MA. I still don't know how studios pick and choose what the sound encoding will be. But I thought that by now that DTS X would have 'caught up' and be included on newer BD releases.
I would think so in a bedroom setup. 10’ is t much room to work with, especially when you will likely be sitting next to the rear wall. No way to get Atmos speakers behind you
Most of my content is through Netflix , and I record some stuff OTA. I have not seen any Dolby Atmos encoded streaming from Netflix here in Canada. So my question is what does a Dolby Atmos enabled receiver do with a 5.1 signal? Will it up mix it in any way?
You mentioned level matching all of your speakers. Isn't that what you're doing when you use room correction? I mean, I used Audessy room correction, and after running it I found that most of my speakers were very close to each other, level wise--within about 0.5 to 1 dB (referring like to like). I went with in ceiling speakers, and I love it. Sometimes the effect is very subtle, but that's the idea. It's not supposed to blare at you, it's supposed to add to the experience.
Robert Heidt u should always check the levels with an SPL meter after you run auto calibration. Some like the surrounds turned up a little bit or the atmos channels turned up a bit more than the auto calibration sets it. Subwoofer trim level is usually set too low IMO so I always up it a few dB to my taste. Auto calibration shouldn’t be a set it forget it thing. It gets u like 70% there than u have to fine tune it to ur preference
@@Bateman61405 I definitely agree with you about the subwoofer trim. I had to bump it quite a bit, 5 dB I think, to get the sound I wanted. Okay, I guess I'll pony up for an SPL meter
Hey Youthman. Love your work. AV receivers do offer Dolby Atmos Height Virtualization and DTS Virtual:X for those who don't have any ceiling or height channels, but I can't find any reviews online about them. I'm sure your receiver has one or both options. Can you please review them so we know if they do actually work or if they are just a gimmick. Thank you in advance.
I have Verizon for my cellular service and they currently have a offer of 12 months of free Disney + if you have a unlimited plan or one of the 5G home plans. I signed up today and watched the 2 episodes of The Mandalorian. Tons of content, movies, shows etc etc etc.
If you have an Nvidia shield or an apple TV 4K, you can still get Dolby Atmos through streaming. Although streaming quality still isn’t up to Blu-ray or 4K quality, it still can provide a great Atmos experience.
Just a little clarification. There’s no such a thing as “Dolby Atmos Speakers”. Dolby Atmos is a Dolby Laboratories Codec. A Dolby Atmos Soundtrack uses two layers of properly placed speakers. Usually , for home theaters, it is 7 ear level and a recommended minimum 4 above ear level. Dolby Cinemas go way bigger than that. When playing a Dolby Atmos Soundtrack at home, some will utilize your base layer much more than your overhead. It doesn’t mean it is not Dolby Atmos. Just means the sound mix doesn’t contain much information for the overhead speakers. You’re still playing and listening to Dolby Atmos. Please try Fury for your next “Atmos brings down your house experience.” Thank you for the new video.
You are correct but we do often refer to in ceiling speakers as the “Atmos” speakers, since Atmos adds the height element Fury is a fantastic movie. Not sure I recall too much overhead speakers being engaged but it’s been awhile.
Youthman You’re correct. I’ve heard that from a few A/V heads. I might be nitpicking but believe we should spread correct information when trying to educate the public at large. Case in point, you’d never say “My DTS:X Speakers”. DTS:X is just another immersive codec. Please re-watch Fury. Absolutely amazing overheads, imaging, panning, and discrete sounds. Another two great examples are A Quiet Place(almost no overhead, but the panning will give you goosebumps) and Marrowbone(another one with almost zero overhead activity, but amazing ATMOSpherics-pun intended).
What is the difference between Dolby true HD and Dolby Atmos, as I understand even Atmos is built over a core of Dolby True HD. in that case if my Blue ray player is only Dolby True HD will it support ATMOS ?
Hey Youthman! I really enjoy Atmos, I have a 5.2.2 setup. When Atmos soundtracks are done it is an awesome experience. A great demo is the beginning of Blade Runner 2049.
Gene (audioholics) did a video with Patrick schappert on immersive audio. Basically patrick felt dolby atmos lets a lot of opportunities for mixing in content on height channels slip by. He said the auro 3d upmixer does a better job....in a nutshell. From the little I've heard it seems people in general are more satisfied with aura 3d. I trust you and found the video very helpful. Thanks!
I made a video as well with just the Atmos channels playing and I to commented throughout the movie demo they were opportunities that Atmos could have had some great affects there but they missed it. The reality is they can only do so much in a movie. I have a friend that has a complete oral 3-D set up and it sounds fantastic as well. I’m not certain that one format is better than the other, this video was just focusing on my set up that is Dolby Atmos and I’m extremely pleased with how it sounds
@@Youthman I would prefer the mixes were better in ATMOS for example.. if the character in a scene was in a room and there's various levels of floors.. and someone is shooting down from an upper level.. then only the sound from that upper level should come from that height speaker.. until it reaches the characher on the ground.. then we hear it from out sound speakers at ear level.. seconds later.. If they did that in movies and TV and games.. Then we'd get an accurate sense of sound.
I didn't think UA-cam did Dolby Atmos audio. Why are you sharing a demo? It would be great if you had links to like the Dolby Demos from their website or some place with Atmos demos you can load onto a USB drive.
I didn’t share a demo in this video. I simply shared why I believe Atmos is a fantastic format. If you are looking for Dolby Atmos files to download, just Google Dolby Atmos Demo Downloads

I love Dolby Atmos! Have had it for about a year.
Sweet!
I started my home cinema adventure with Dolby Surround. Then Dolby Prologic. Then Dolby Digital now using ATMOS..
@@LFC-Star I started with a Dolby prologic 2
Hi there youthman. I met Larry from svs and told him I was subscribed to your channel. He mentioned to me that you were a youth minister . I thought that was awesome! I am a pulpit preacher. Looks like lovers of God love home theater as well.
Awesome James. I was a student pastor for 23 years (this Youthman). I now work for a non-profit
( a can fab some sort of mount/shelf, and it is a fairly solid wall as far.as holding weight, it is logs)
Thanks for your videos!
Thank you kindly
Unless you have a very large room, I recommend trying 5.2.4 if your receiver can do it
One thing I discovered is although I had it set up for atmos I happened to notice it was set to fh which turns out to mean front height. When I changed it to ceiling speakers made a huge difference. Just saying obviously should make sure whichever type of atmos either upfiring etc to tell the receiver the configuration you are actually using.
I noticed that too! Same thing happened to me.
The Matrix is also a very great movie in dolby atmos. i found it on amazon.
Thank you for the information. 1 question... Dolby atmos 3.1.2. any thoughts?
Can I connect the speakers to my pc and get the same effect in my gaming room?
Very good video.
Please inform my , if from my tv ,can i have dolby atmos atmosphere to my room ,with a home theater dolby atmos receiver .Must even the tv suport the dolby atmos?
If you are watching movies on a 4K player, it sends the sound to your AVR and the video to your TV.
If you have a smart TV, most apps do not support Atmos.
An Nvidia Shield and AppleTV 4K does support Atmos
@@Youthman Thanks a lot
@@Youthman Another question. My tv not supporting dolby atmos. If i watching netflix ,a movie with dolby atmos on my tv ,and my AV amplifier support dolby atmos, will I have a dolby atmos atmosphere?

Thank you.
7.2.4 would be my preference.
When it comes to movie audio encoding there are generally only the following formats:
- 2/ 2.1 channel stereo (2 or 3 discrete channels)
- Dolby digital 5.1 (six discrete channels)
- Dolby Atmos/DTS X (between 8 [5.1.2] and 13 [7.2.4] discrete channels)
Any receiver that has more than a 5.1 set up and is not certified Atmos or DTSX is ‘faking’ the extra speakers using the processing within the amplifier to convert the 5 channels of Dolby digital into 7, or 9, or 11. Movies were never encoded with more than a 5.1 mix until Atmos and DTS X came along.
Coolest Explanation Ever sir 😍
Love from Karntaka
I’ve heard 4 ceiling speakers are highly recommended, however, I’m going to be setting up in a small space (and budget) so, I picked up a 7.2 AVR that can be set up for 7.1 or 5.1.2 (or 7.2 or 5.2.2), I’ll be able to put speakers in the ceiling. I had wanted to do 4 overhead, but, I thought 2 might be better than none.
Not everyone can go with 4. But if you can, it will provide a more realistic effect
Thanks for that ill have to go height speakers as it’s not possible for ceiling mount speakers
Recently updated to 5.2, planning to go for 5.2.2 ( avr limited ) hope that works out . All with klipsch. Worth it or not ? Source mostly from
Netflix / prime. Advice .. Thanks
I have a question. If I have a dolby atmos audio system, but my blu ray player is not dolby atmos, will I still get the atmos effect from the speakers?
Hey YouthMan....What Type of Speakers are Dolby Atmos Speakers???
The good thing about Dolby Atmos is that the setup isn't a waste anyways. It's not like the speakers won't be used whether the content has Atmos or not. Dolby Surround emulation is very good at using those speakers for non-atmos content.
That’s a great point
Can anyone tel me for 7.1.4 the rear speaker on back wall which is 6 and 7 should they be shooting straight or angel in to listen spot ?
Dang man, you nailed it all!
Thanks Cigar
I currently have DALI alteco c-1 on top of my floorstanders as upfiring but i read that they arent atmos-certified... Will it make any Difference if i buy upfiring ones that are certified like Heco AM 200? All my other speakers are DALI tho
Do you use the upmixer for movies that aren't in atmos, or do you prefer to listen to them in native 5.1 / 7.1?
I just take 7.1 surround rear speaker, and place in the ceiling, there is no difference "dolby almost"
I think Neural:X does a great job upmixing.

Do you have a link to ur home setup? Tank yoy for all the tips
Here you go - ua-cam.com/video/9rQxNd1Lf38/v-deo.html
Nice content and description sir. But as the subject says you explained how and what to setup, but not clarified why should some one go for Atmos.
Does your receiver have to support it ??
Or as long aS speakers have ATMOS your ok and ur tv have ATMOS

I have a similar setup. Did you ever figure it out?
Any speaker can technically be used as an Atmos speaker. It mostly has to do with placement.
Rod Williams have you got this sound nar yet?
It might be best to stick with what you have
The Dolby Surround upmixer works pretty well too. I love playing video games with it.
Transformers Last Knight’s opening Medieval battle scene really showcases Atmos at its best.
It's so annoying when you have great picture and sound quality on a terrible movie.
Hey Youthman, i have a onkyo 676 receiver and a sony upb x800 4k player. I'm running it out of my receiver in 5.1 to the hdmi 4 arc on my sony tv. I can't get dolby atmos only dts neutral x
Somehow it finally worked. I have dolby atmos.
Thank you man I moved my Dolby Atmos speaker somewhere else and it sounds so much better thanks your a life saver
Glad to help

@@Youthman Thanks Youthman - in that case, the Pioneer LX305 is the perfect solution for my room and budget. :)

Can I use miniDSP UMIK-1 Omni-directional mic with REW to level match my speakers?
I would think so. I just have not used it personally to do that.
You definitely can. I've been using the miniDSP UMIK-1 Omni-directional mic with REW to level match my speakers and measuring frequency response of my subwoofers.
Joseph Ninh, thank you, that makes thing a lot easier for me.
Question which one between this two R-100SW or R-12SWi? Room is 15 x 10 x 9?
In--ceiling is better than wall mounted elevation speakers???? Both are angled down at the listening position.
Got it! Thank you!

I can't have "atmos" in my place - to small. But very informative never the less. Wish I could actually hear it some day though!!

Youthman, I ran this buy Channa. Thought I'd get your thoughts. With the atmos speakers shouldn't they be timbre matched? Have a 5.1 set of Def Tech bp 3000 series Id love to add atmos speakers to that setup 2. :)
It’s not as critical with Atmos or surrounds. You definitely want to have your front three timber matched.
My biggest annoyance is DTS X coming late to the party. I am such a fan of dts that I'd buy a movie just because it was DTS-MA. what about the lack of surround array ?
Most of my content is through Netflix , and I record some stuff OTA. I have not seen any Dolby Atmos encoded streaming from Netflix here in Canada. So my question is what does a Dolby Atmos enabled receiver do with a 5.1 signal? Will it up mix it in any way?
Depending on your receiver, some receivers can upmix
@Youthman, Thanks. Is the ability to upmix brand dependent or more of a model by model thing?
You mentioned level matching all of your speakers. Isn't that what you're doing when you use room correction? I mean, I used Audessy room correction, and after running it I found that most of my speakers were very close to each other, level wise--within about 0.5 to 1 dB (referring like to like).
I went with in ceiling speakers, and I love it. Sometimes the effect is very subtle, but that's the idea. It's not supposed to blare at you, it's supposed to add to the experience.
Hi Robert, did you use an SPL meter to see if your speakers were playing the same volume or are you just looking at the levels in your receiver?
Robert Heidt u should always check the levels with an SPL meter after you run auto calibration. Some like the surrounds turned up a little bit or the atmos channels turned up a bit more than the auto calibration sets it.
Subwoofer trim level is usually set too low IMO so I always up it a few dB to my taste.
Auto calibration shouldn’t be a set it forget it thing. It gets u like 70% there than u have to fine tune it to ur preference
Always use am SPL meter to check after running room correction. It usually needs a few adjustments.
@@Youthman No, you're right. I'm strictly looking at the levels on the receiver.
@@Bateman61405 I definitely agree with you about the subwoofer trim. I had to bump it quite a bit, 5 dB I think, to get the sound I wanted. Okay, I guess I'll pony up for an SPL meter
My theater room has high vaulted ceilings. Will that prevent Dolby Atmos from being effective as intended?
Should be fine as long as you are not using upfiring speakers. Those will not work unless you have a flat ceiling and not too high.
I heard that also. 😀
Where can I get or find the the links mentioned in your video?
On a computer, look below the video and click “Show More” in the description.
On a mobile, scroll below the video and click the down arrow.
It atoms worth is if you don’t have a blue ray player? I stream all my content
If you have an Nvidia shield or an apple TV 4K, you can still get Dolby Atmos through streaming. Although streaming quality still isn’t up to Blu-ray or 4K quality, it still can provide a great Atmos experience.
Great info Youthman
Thanksp
Please try Fury for your next “Atmos brings down your house experience.”
Thank you for the new video.
You are correct but we do often refer to in ceiling speakers as the “Atmos” speakers, since Atmos adds the height element
Fury is a fantastic movie.
Does 50gb bluray rip have pure blood atmos or is it with reservations
I have never ripped a BLURAY but software typically copies bit for bit so it should be a 1:1 exact copy
What is the difference between Dolby true HD and Dolby Atmos, as I understand even Atmos is built over a core of Dolby True HD. in that case if my Blue ray player is only Dolby True HD will it support ATMOS ?
If your receiver can process Dolby Atmos, set your Blu-ray player to Bitstream in the setup that way your receiver will do the processing for atmos
