I did this fight with medium roll. 6 waterfowl dances and 2 clone attacks dodged perfectly, 4 waterfowls and 1 clone attack of which all happen when she is in phase 2 with 25% remaining HP. When i use a weapon that causes heavy stagger, i can do the sprint+jump strat effortlessly, but with something like a straight or curved sword i always get nicked. It is incredibly weird.

You can feel, that a game or specific aspects of it did not work for you, that is totally valid, but to use made up justifications, which just feel right, but are either not supported by evidence, or even contradicted by it, as "proof", that some aspect he didn't like was "objectively bad game design" is either disingenuous or otherwise problematic. Especially if you blame game developers for not catering to your specific niche way to play the game, which you made purposefully harder on your self, but expect it to still fit into your range of challenge enjoyment. Again, it is fine for Joseph Anderson to feel that way, but what annoys people is that he tried to present that as more than personal preference.

Are you using a mod that raises your FPS? The jump method doesn't work consistently at 120 FPS because Melania gets better tracking. The close range circle dodge is likewise nearly impossible at 120 FPS.
Marvellously fought. Melania has honestly become one of my favourite fights in Elden Ring now that I can consistently fight her. Also in regards to Melania “not following the rules” I recommend Magicats video “In defence of Melania” which covers a lot of the criticisms people throw at the boss. Fought her at rl100 with a +16 Greathammer; felt extremely cathartic to consistently punish her and get away from attacks. It's not a rl1 run, sure, but I'd never had patience for Soulsborne SL1 since they're so inconsistent. Glad to finally see you finishing this Odyssey, hope you take a rest after this.
Incredible end of the fight. Congrats! Adding to the point of the terrain messing with her moves, at the time I beat her (june 2022) when she started some specific attacks of her kit in the edge of the arena she would automatically cancel the animation and return to a neutral state. This was great when the attack she was gonna make was Waterflow, but most of the times they were the easily punishable attacks, which I wasn't very happy about ofc. Idc if this has been patched since then (not even sure if it's a bug). Still, I'm firmly in the camp of ''I hate to love her''. I'm pretty sure she suffered from rushed development, but the fight itself was mostly fun for me and she has an incredible soundtrack and visual design. Top 5 in the game imo.

You basically map out a tutorial on every window that a boss has and then just hammer away at those windows while maintaining just an absurd amount of focus that's just a marvel to watch. Radagon should be a fun one, really looking forward to it
Happy that I got to see this live. It's one of my favourite fights in Elden Ring although she has a lot of inconsistencies, I wish she had more polish to her. But it still is one of the fights I always look forwards to when starting a new game. And hopefully, people through this video can see that jump dodge is viable.

Great job defeating malenia with the zweihander RL1+0, i watched the fight on your twitch channel and the fight seemed so fun and enjoyable that i tried doing your challenge with malenia and holy shit i spent 16 hours to defeat her and only seen phase 2 probably less than 20 times and it was really hard but at least enjoyable. I really hated how passive she was on her first phase along with her hyperarmor posture immunity that made the fight even harder along with some of her jank like activating her deflection animation when you haven't even attacked her or her triple quick slash attack from neutral. Her second phase was a much better experience that i wished she was at least this aggressive in her first phase.
I don’t like her posture immunity with hyper armor but I’m not sure if I dislike her passivity. She’s pretty easy to aggro and in phase 2 I feel like waterfowl is significantly more rng than in phase 1 which can make victory slightly reliant on luck if you have not already mastered waterfowl dance
I just soloed Malenia for the first time last night (NG+7), I feel like I could do pretty good if given another chance, but I need to be able to confidently beat her, started another ng+ cycle, I’ll update you guys on how her fight goes

Everything about the visuals of the second phase screams "scarlet rot", regardless of the actual proc. Great fight though! Yea she will definitely rot you if you block a lot or are really tanky so there's that I guess. I don't hate her I just think she's a weak sharbearer fight but still a pretty decent fight in the grand scheme of soulsbourne bosses. Doing hitless base level for her is an exercise of insanity though

It's guard cancelling, something that's been around since all of souls I think. You basically cancel any cancellable animation with a block animation, which allows you to do things like transition into a sprint faster by skipping the animation where you start sprinting or like cancelling the turn around animation when I'm sprinting away from malenia etc. Tons of applications, most of them PvP. ITs the same thing like when you cancel a roll recovery animation with a parry for example.

I have a vid about how I deal with it right around when I dropped this one. You can also save yourself the hassle and just space both options and charge an r2. Think I've seen people jump it for a heavy r2 to stagger her also. The no roll strat is you run to her right and she will miss everything. In heavy elevation discrepancies it can become impossible to dodge although I've rarely ever seen it.

It may have to do with what weapon you hold as how low your arms hang in the animation can affect your hitbox so it becomes harder
