What a major pain in the butt to replace a simple light bulb. Thank you GE! Great video by the way. Thanks.
Agreed
The newer gens are easier. I don't believe you have to remove the entire microwave (which absolutely absurd). There is an internal access panel instead (finally GE engineers listened). I need to inspect my lamp because when I leave my door open I smell burning plastic...that's a huge red flag and fire hazard. Wondering what got dislodged, but it stinks my place up pretty fierce and quickly. They are good microwaves, but I will be damned if they need to take some notes from Samsung product development specialist when it comes to convenience of maintenance and fire prevention design work.
Great how to video. I’m a novice. I just successfully changed the bulb and can say instructions are accurate and easy to follow. Thanks!
This is just another reason to hate my GE microwave...I thank you very much for your helpful how-to video...I have the model PEM 31SF3SS. The GE Profile with build-in kit just like this demonstration. It was a replacement for a previous GE Profile built in. They are counter top microwaves with the plastic "faux stainless" finish frame to give a built-in appearance. If we had not had our kitchen cabinet custom made to accommodate this microwave I would not have replaced the broken one with the new GE microwave. When we replaced it, we found the the model that we had first was no longer made & this was the replacement. Guess what. It was just a fraction of an inch difference in size AND the trim kit (plastic stainless frame) was different. Our original had curved (eyebrow) metal face & the new is straight rectangle so not only did we have to buy a new microwave oven we had to buy a new trim kit and from Lowe's it was over $500 which is ridiculous for a small countertop microwave with plastic trim kit. That was enough to really anger us. Now my light bulb has burned out & my husband, thank God he's a wonderful handyman, is going to have to take that thing out of the cabinet & disassemble it to replace a stupid light bulb, which by the way, is a terrible light bulb. It is too dim & it's hard to see in the oven when it's cooking. I have food boil over & can't even tell b/c it's so dark inside....I will never buy another GE product. Thank you for this very helpful video.
Well thank God for your video, I couldn't figure out how the hell to replace the light bulb. Man I hate GE, just making it hard for the customer. But your video was exactly what I was looking for❣️
I will never buy GE products AGAIN because of this...INSANE AND NOT NECESSARY!
Thank you for this video. I watched it was able to change the bulb in my GE microwave by following your instructions. Super helpful. Thank you.
Very useful video. In my built in GE profile microwave oven, after I got the microwave oven out of its cabinet and was ready to remove the cover, I discovered I needed a TORX security and tamper-proof bit set that I did not own for two of the machine screws that hold the case to the frame. A TORX security and tamper-proof bit set is different than a standard TORX bit set. Fortunately I found a set in stock at an ACE Hardware store. I called the store in advance to be sure.
This is a great video! I had a few minor differences but very minor. The noteworthy item is I needed a t20 Torx tool, not the t25.
THANK YOU!
I guess it stays dark
This cracked me up. ours has been dark longer than it was working. House goes on the market soon so I guess we will replace
Thanks for the video - exactly as shown and very easy. Just stay away from the capacitor and you're good. Thanks!
Thanks for the video! We used your video to replace the bulb in an LG microwave LCRT2010ST - similar set-up. Ridiculous to be forced to take the microwave a part like this to replace the bulb. When we contacted LG about replacing it, we were told a certified LG repair person would have to replace the bulb. Uh no thank you!
Good job!
Thank you very much for explaining. I thought GE attempted to make things easier. Not even the manual indicates how to do it.
On the GE PVM9215, the interior light bulb is extremely easy to access from the front through the vent cover.
Does anyone know if you can just replace the bulb on this model or does it require replacing both the bulb and the light assembly? Light bulb would be cheaper whereas the assembly is about $13. Thanks!
For those security screws, you can use the screwdriver that comes with a Ring doorbell.
The ring uses a T15 security Torx. He said in the video you need a T25 security Torx. Sooooo, did you see a security Torx and think,, "Oh, Torx... I've seen those before. My ring uses them," and just guessing that they'd fit? Or did you have a different model of Ring that used a T25 security Torx?
It certainly could’ve been designed better but it’s really no big deal. I have an old 2003 GE that I just keep going. Replaced the magnetron, high voltage capacitor, etc. over the yrs. Mine is pre torx security screws so that helps. Definitely stay away from the capacitor, they’re dangerous.
Is there a way to TEST the bulb works BEFORE reinstalling the microwave back in the cabinet?
I would just use a dremel and cut out a door to bulb and rehang with pladtic zip tie. Also would substitute an led bulb as i did this on the night light bulb on my ge profile.
Does the capacitor have to be discharged if I just need to replace the light bult?
So, if your bulb burns out, you need to use it dark or buy a new one. Got it, thanks. My next won't be by GE
Damn it! I'll never buy a GE microwave of this type again!
PITA bulb replacement aside, I think it's a great microwave.
@@slickstretch6391 It is a great microwave. Besides the light bulb I never really had any problems with this microwave.
I I have two bulbs, but only one lights up. Is that his it should be?
Thanks for the video. This is the same microwave I have. Before I tear this entire thing apart can you please tell me what bulb to order for this model so I can order it before I do all this? Please:)

What is the model number of the bulb?
Any LED option?
I used a led gy6.35 3.5 watt 35 watt equivalent
How to replace the door interlock switches? Need to pull the entire microwave out of cabinet as well?
Most likely
Is installing this a 2 man job? I recently replaced my GE cooking vent and that required 2 people to install.
As long as you can lift it jnto place, one person can do it. I did it alone.
Thanks for the video, it will be helpful. btw, your bulb was not burned out on your microwave to start with. I saw it come on the first time you opened the door. You might want to check that before replacing the bulb next time. Thanks again.
I think that is because I did not shoot the video on removing the trim until AFTER I had replaced the bulb.
I got GE profile over the range microwave, I want to replace the bulbs that are at the bottom and provide lighting on the stovetop. It says 120v 40w for incandescent or 120v 20w for halogen. Is there a bulb number or model or those info are good enough? (looking for 5000k bulbs as I like those white lights)
Wish I could help. I would check with one of the appliance repair websites.
can you buy the bulb or do you have to purchase the whole assembly?
You can buy the bulb. I provided the link in the video description above.
@@cruisemansgarage thanks for your video. I could not find the link in the video. Does the bulb actually come out of the socket? Thanks!
@@leet2477 yes
Correction: Does the capacitor have to be discharged if I just need to replace the light bulb?
It's not a bad idea
Thank you for your response. I appreciate your video.
T15 security bit!
Thanks for the video but omg GE; what a bunch of crap. I can’t believe they would engineer a product like this. Way to go GE! Brilliant!
GE does have infinite wisdom, and it's called self preservation. You buy a product to where only they can service it. But a light bulb? Give me a break GE! They loves these type of service calls. It's a no brainer for the repair tech to change a light bulb if he does enough of them, and GE will charge you a couple hundred bucks for it. Total rip off!
Yup, not changing it (ding it's ready)
Absolutely insane, and I suspect totally unnecessary placement of a light bulb. Great video, but I'll be living in the dark.
What's the purpose of a video where you warn people to find another video to do part of the process (discharge the capacitor)?
Honestly, it’s probably to protect him from lawsuit if he explains how to do it and someone still doesn’t do it correctly and gets hurt, I’d guess it’s the same reason he had the notes to hire a professional tech to do the job and that the video is for entertainment purposes only…too many sue-happy people, lawyers wanting to take their cases, and a court system willing to let them sue for their own stupidity.
Are you kidding me? Just open the door and look in! Ridiculous move GE!!
absolutely horrible. You basically have to disassemble the microwave to change the bulb. No wonder GE is about to go out of business.
Yes bad design by GE but GE is NOT about to go out of business.
Good lord, I’d rather buy a new microwave
Too complicated for me to do. I will live without the light.
Exactly!! It’s just too much!!
Hey bro, I noticed your fingernail (thumb) while you were changing the light bulb. It had a dark brown streak that appeared to be growing at the base. Hopefully this is just a bruise from smashing your thumb, b/c these can be a sign of Longitudinal melanonychia, a type of cancer that needs to be attended to immediately. Best of luck to you, again, hopefully it's just a smashed finger.
I think I had smashed my thumb in the car door. But thank you for your concern.
GE didn't want you to be able to easily access the bulb. They wannt you to call a repair person to come out and do it so they can charge you an outrageous fee for the privilege.
Ridiculous GE
I like to see video in action, not narrative.
What a pain in the ass
Very stupid design.
Agree
No thanks. I'll get rid of this GE garbage and replace it before this nonsense for a lightbulb.
Can't say I blame you. But, check the next microwave you buy to see what it takes to replace the bulb. Probably just as bad.
