  • Aston Martin just achieved a major result in the world of endurance racing. The Comtoyou Vanatge GT3 took victory during the Centenary addition of the 24 Hours of Spa that took place in 2024. But how did Aston Martin secure this result? And why is this win so special? Well in this video that is exactly what I talk about.

    Correction:
The team name Comtoyou is pronounced incorrectly in the video. It’s pronounced, Come-to-you. This was my first time pronouncing this team name in a video and when I double checked the pronunciation beforehand, coincidently both my sources were incorrect. Apologies for the mistake, for any future videos on Team Comtoyou, I will pronounce the name correctly.

You know what? I am not sure of that.... he already has a WEC championship, with Toyota. That includes the LeMans win.
Maybe he wants another, but...I would think that completing the Triple Crown would have more worth to the man, especially considering the embarrassing Indy 500 run (he got bumped, he didn't even get into the race).

Idk, I don't anticipate their hypercar to be anywhere in LMH and I don't think Chadlonso is going to go to GT3.
That being said, AM's GT3 program often times finds themselves in the right spot to pick up wins when others fumble, although I haven't seen them have much raw pace in WEC or IMSA even though over a season, AM teams to run reasonably well

I'm a Porsche fan and was more in favor of Aston winning in the end since they've been waiting for it for ages now. But I'm not gonna lie: The way they won it wasn't easy to watch. Pace and strategy wise, this was Ferrari's race to win no doubt. But unlike Le Mans luck wasn't on your side...

I was at the race, on the grandstand before the dip towards Eau Rouge watching the screen. I was ok with Ferrari winning, they absolutely earned that and it was heartbreaking to watch that happen in the pits. However this means so much to Aston Martin and comtoyou Racing being a Belgian team too, I held back tears when I saw them cross the finish line. Whoever loves racing has to see Spa in the middle of the night, I was at Bruxelles at midnight as lightning lit the sky, the rain came down, the sound of distant beer gardens partying while the lights of race cars illuminated the tall pines of the Ardennes and the spray illuminated by the red flashing light on the back of the cars. It was a moment in my life I will never forget and racing in north america needs to work on getting the magic and mystique that european 24 hour races have.

Earl Bamber did it as well: Spa 2020, Le Mans 2015 & 2017, Nürburgring 2023 and unlike Nicki he has won Le Mans overall.
Laurens Vanthoor is another driver with at least a class win at each event: Spa overall 2014 and 2020, Nürburgring overall in 2015 and Le Mans GTE Pro class-win in 2018.
It happens but it's definitely a rarety that's for sure.
The only combination that has never been achieved in endurance racing (as far as I know) is an overall win at the 24h of Spa, Le Mans, Nürburgring and Daytona.

At the end of the day, if drama like what happened with the #51 Ferrari occurs, you still need the pace to capitulize on it. That's racing.
What makes this, and for that matter the entire podium, extra special is that it's a Belgian 1-3 with a personal link. Seeing a Belgian team win overall on home soil on the big 100th anniversary of the event barely 2 days before my 24th birthday is absolutly fantastic! Adding the #32 WRT BMW on the podium, a team i found out is a customer at my workplace for parts, just... I can't be more proud as a Belgian to see this happen!
Here's to another 100 years for us to enjoy this iconic race!

Does Spa do something now to widen the pit entrance? It was always an accident waiting to happen there and now the Devil has come to collect his due. It looks like there is a cliff or embankment to the outside, so adding more space there be impossible. They need to widen the inside section which would take away some of the run off coming off the chicane. So it is possible that whole section of race track may need to be reconfigured.

    • @maxb4085
      @maxb4085 2 дні тому

I wouldn't say removing some of the runoff on the exit of the chicane to increase the width of the pit entry would need the whole final section to be fully reconfigured. That runoff on the exit of the chicane is pretty useless especially given the fact the cars are going quite slowly off the exit of the chicane, so I do think they could just increase the width of the pit entry with no change of the layout.
The only problem is if someone loses control and cuts the chicane at high speed over the grass but in that scenario having like 2m more tarmac before the tyre barrier isn't really going to change the outcome of the crash so I don't think it would actually be any less safe with a smaller runoff on the exit of the chicane

Blah, the Ferrari got hosed bad... If the Lamborghini had moved all the way left like they should have, they wouldn't have blocked the pit enter completely like that. And the Lamborghini did it the exact same thing the stop before. But, Aston Martin did nothing wrong, and the driver of the Ferrari said he had enough gas to drive another lap, if the pits had told him the Lamborghini was blocking the pits.

It was a wild and crazy race at Spa with the weather and seeing Aston Martin come through for the victory was a real surprise. Enjoyable to watch, probably except for the periods in the middle of the night when the rain really got heavy and obviously, the safety car was deployed for extended periods of time. I always enjoy watching the 24 Hours of Spa every year. It was fun to see a lot of the historic cars on track for support races for the centenary, too. So, the GT1 era cars and even going back into the touring car era of the '70s and '80s with the Ford Capri's, BMW 3.0 CSL's and 635's, and other great machinery that raced around Spa long before it became a GT race which really saved it's legacy after 1999 and 2000 and the races being won by, of all things, a diesel-powered Peugeot 306 hatchback economy car!
