I know these old trucks very well. if u ever have a question I can help.
How do you like the ramp rack?
u want real results, advance the timing a couple degrees,, pull throttle body and sand and polish the throats... do not cut the lip off.. put a new spring in the fuel pressure regulator inside the throttle body.. a few psi stronger than stock. get u a set of BELKIN plug wires and run ac delco plugs,. also get u an AC delco cap and rotor.. if your distributor is old and tired, get a new dura last gold or ac delco .. the distributor gears wear on these old trucks. the magnets in the distributor rotor get weak from heat and the metal inside rusts.. all that snake oil stuff is gimmick,, its oil based, people pour it in, see it smoking and think hmmmm must be working,, sea foam does the same thing,, smokes..,.,. I run a bottle of marvel mystery oil in the gas every 3rd tank.. I know what is in MMA I had it tested.,. its white phospherous., it cleans the engine. it will keep your lifters, valves, pistons, ect clean and smooth.. I run either mobile one or valvoline oil.. my 94 has 212.000 on the original engine and it runs like new.. abt 25 miles before I do an oil change I pour half a bottle of MMA in the engine,, I change the oil when warm, and let it drip all of the old oil out for at least an hour, or until nothing is dripping out. I run WIX oil filters only.. these GMT400S are great trucks, if u take care of them with the right stuff. also make sure you have a 180 thermostat. the alternators on these trucks are a little undersized, especially if your running upgraded halogen headlights, I ran oversized positive and negative cables to my battery.. for the ground coming from the battery, if its going to the aluminum bracket on the front of the motor, move it directly to the engine block,, on the thermostat housing there are several ground wires,, keep them clean and tight..I use a product called DE OX IT 5. Pull and clean the EGR valve and passages abt every other year. replace vacuum hoses going to EGR. Also pull and clean Idle air control valve on throttle body, use a q tip and carb cleaner for the passage but not on the valve. just gently clean the pintle with a little carb cleaner sprayed on a q tip.
Redline fuel treatment is a good one also it has PEA high concentration it survives the heat of the combustion chamber and cleans top of pistons and rings
@@jonschwartz9669 I will check it out,., another great one I just found is SUPERZILLA.. I have an old kawasaki mule, it had been running rich for a long time, previous owner didnt take care of it and it had a worn idle needle.. I pulled the plug and the top of the cylinder was caked with carbon,, I sprayed a few ounces of superzilla in the cylinder and let it sit overnight. the next morning cranked it over with the plug out and sludge came shooting out,.,the t shirt I had covering the cylinder hole was black with the old carbon.. I also added some super to the gas tank and it started running better and better. I had to readjust the idle twice, due to compression increases.. it runs like a fine swiss watch now. I can idle it down so low and it keeps running smooth,, its remarkable. Ace hardware carries it, well some of them, or u can order it online.. it is AMAZING stuff with alot of uses..
also for getting stuck or rusted nuts and bolts off, nothing even comes close.. PB BLASTER is good, but superzilla is faster and penetrates deeper. it also leaves a lubricating coat on the parts.. its not the cheapest super penetrant and I use it sparingly, but it has not failed me yet.., also a great paintbrush cleaner., it takes the old dried paint out, and makes the brush behave really good. it has become my wifes go to stain remover as well.
@@jonschwartz9669 when I can get a part off of a motor, I use easy off oven cleaner to clean grease and carbon. the trick is dont leave it on overnight until it gets dry and flaky,. spray it, agitate the part with a stiff brush, wait abt an hour then rinse and repeat. it makes cleaning gunked up cylinder heads egr valves, engine blocks a breeze.. just dont get it on your hands or in your eyes..
if you havent pulled, cleaned and rebuilt your throttle body in a while, it likely due.. its very easy if u pay attention,., they used 2 different styles, and the gasket kit comes with different gaskets.., u have to be careful u dont put the wrong center gasket in,, also if u ever pull your valve covers, check the drainback holes in the corners of the heads.. they sometimes get clogged or restricted due to oil pooling in the corners.
heres another thing, these trucks dont run alot of oil pressure.,,. alot of people see 8 to 10 psi at idle, and lose thier minds,,, that is normal for these engines...
