Mildly obsessed with watching peoples reactions to this song, and this is by far the best one. The attention to detail, "introduction of guitar", "piano bass notes", "I saw the strings go". Love that she reacts to the music as well as his voice. Most reactions I've seen focus solely on the amazing vocals and miss these details of the musical instruments. Pause breaks to discuss what she is hearing are concise and effective. Many other reactions have too long pauses which ruins the pace of the song. And the way she is almost out of breath by the end, like she is emotionally exhausted by the song. She gets it! Not to mention the eye candy ;)
Andre Green, you are correct. And, because of his hatred for the auto-tune machine, he and the producers were arguing about it being used, because of his flu. But, he gave in, just to silence the producers, or the manager, I am thinking that it might have been the manager, come to think about it. But, since he was trained as a Jewish Cantor Boy, as he was growing up and attending the church that his grandmother would take him along with her. He was not happy about the machine, so he sang it, while he was sick and they said that the machine kicked on for a split second, that whole time. And, here is a tidbit of more information about the song. As they were in the studio, preparing to record it, as they tried different variations of it, to get the right feel from it, that they were looking for. David Draimen just started singing it like this, as he was just tinkering around with the different styles of sound he was able to produce. After he finished and walked out of the sound room, he looked at the rest of the guy's, and they all were ghost white in the face, as if they just saw a ghost. And, the producer muttered out, the best he could, as his jaw was laying on the floor, THAT is exactly what they needed to do! And later, the original song writer, Paul Simon(From Simon & Garfunkel) , caught wind of what they were doing, from about 3 room's away, as he was there, to do something, as well(I forget if he was doing a new album, or something like that), but, he decided to pay them a visit, from a few buildings away, so he walked over to their sound room and listened to their version. And, he loved it so much as he said that they put it into perspective, that he himself tried to do, back in the 60's, but he just didn't know how to get it right. So, he let them know, that they had his own blessing to do it and he loved it! I watched the video of Paul Simon talking about it, either with, or in separate parts of the video, about how they came up with wanting to do the cover of the song. Granted, it was a little while ago. So, I don't remember what all happened. But, I do remember, that Paul Simon was either in the next studio over, or a few studio's away from the studio, that Disturbed was at...
David's voice goes way beyond genre in my opinion. He would set the world on fire with his voice, power and charisma regardless of genre.it doesn't hurt that the band are wold class musicians in their own right
There's something extremely haunting there at the end when everything goes silent and you hear nothing but the echo of his voice. That split second is pure perfection with this live version over the studio version.
Can you imagine going to Conan and THIS is your performance! Amazing. He was ill with flu too. Paul Simon even called him after this performance and praised his cover even putting the link to it on his own social media pages. Best cover and version of it!
No, and it probably didn't happen that way. Often, when you don't see Conan greet the band afterwards, it's because the performance was recorded earlier and edited in.
Love your reaction Aileen. This was my late wife's favourite song. We always played this as a duet with me on guitar and her singing. We saw disturbed perform this when we saw them support Avenged Sevenfold in 2016. We just cuddled and smiled. At her funeral I did both. I played it for her as I sang. Was so difficult to play it as I had tears streaming down my face and to this day this song always makes me tear up. David Draiman brings so much raw power to this song. It's just so beautiful.
David's respect for Paul Simon's vision and message was the catalyst for the anger and rage that David brought to this cover. Paul Simon wrote a song of hope and he sang it with hope over 50 years ago. We didn't listen...our parents and grandparents didn't listen and David brought power and an almost righteous anger because we STILL haven't listened. Simon didnt say the song belongs to David. People keep saying that, but its not what he said. He said he highly approves of Davids version. Specifically, he said it was "extremely powerful" and that it reintroduced the song to newer generations.
The original is not a song of hope, it is a song of despair. David's version, like so much of his work, is a song of rage. It is powerful and impressive, but it doesn't work as well for me. Both versions are great. When I think of transformational covers, I think of songs where the original songwriter has to hear it and think, the cover is better. I think Johnny Cash doing NIN's 'Hurt' is close. I think Gary Jules doing Tears For Fears 'Mad World' is the gold standard.

Much better than the original Simon and Garfunkel recording from 1966. It’s everything you said - raw power, beautiful, stunning. Very much late to comment, but wanted to vent out something. This song is so powerful to me, as it reminds me of 2 people I lost too early, and to top it off this was played at the funeral. „The Sound of Silence“, written in 1963/1964 by Paul Simon and first sang by Simon & Garfunkel welcomed its first endorsed cover by Disturbed (David Draiman) 50 years after its debut. Now, 57 years later and still only, maybe, 1% of those who know the song really understand it. 57 years later and there are still no better words to describe the decay of society and humanity. If you're one of those who do not understand it, find someone to translate it for you because you're missing out on something special.
Just like Hurt, which originally is from Nine Inch Nails got covered by Johnny Cash, and even Trent itself said "that is not my song anymore, it's Cash's.", the same can be said about Simon & Garfunkel "The Sound of Silence" being "covered" by Disturbed. It is not Simon & Garfunekl's song anymore. It is Disturbed's. David pours heart and soul out in order to sing this song. And the rest of the band together with the orchestra accompanied him in order to add that little bit of "magic" and depthness to a song that if simply played by David itself would be ALREADY a touch of genius (thank you, Simon and Garfunkel, your lyrics are amazing!). An outstanding review - thanks. There are two things in this performance that are easy to miss. In the second verse just after the guitar comes in the cellos begin playing, and between the words "tenement" and "halls' he stops using the vocal fry.
I have watched MANY of the reaction videos to this song and I have heard a lot of people state he doesn't need the rasp while singing this song. You summed it up by stating it adds emotion to the song, that he's not just singing it. Watching a video when the person is immersed in the song and actually listens to it is great. So many people stop the song every five seconds to comment.
A heavy metal band that catches EVERYONE by surprise, then elevates and owns a song (this song) 50+ years after it was written!! Anyone who hasn't been blown away by this isn't really listening!! No matter what music you like (All Genres) this is superbly done and flawless in every way!! The best cover/song/official video these past 5+ years. \m/
As he should have been, I have heard him live in concert, he does not need autotune, he has a voice that carries almost exactly as it does on their albums. I dare say he is probably the best rock/metal vocalist alive today. Also Disturbed deserves to be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, their talent as a whole is genre defining.
I remember as a kid the live telecast of Simon and Garfunkel at Central Park. Arts voice was like an angel singing this song but Disturbed knocked it out of the park with power and changing the melody slightly so it sounds a little like the Exorcist theme. It matches their music video to a tee.
The Official video is amazing...... depicts the separation of the Musicians...and the Song writers on different shores.....which creates the "sound of silence"..and the musicians build a boat at the end...to join the song writers..so they make "BREAK" the sound of silence.
She reacts to the best songs, she keeps me tagging along. Even though at times some songs break my heart. I'll take the pain, and put a smile on my face and move on.
I love his live performances, but for my money the official video blows this one out of the water. His raw vocal talent, the incredible orchestra, and just as important, the visuals from the music video, combine to make an unforgettable experience. 😊😊😊❤
An another reaction from a vocal teacher. She explained how difficult it is for a person to go from grit singing to clean and he does so several times with ease.
years late, but the crazy part of this amazing cover, is He was actually sick during this performance. crazy enough you cant even hear it but there are interviews with him where he confirms this. Just goes to show how talented he is.
He was introduced to music at a young age through opera. Of course singing heavy metal pays the bills and someone has to do it. Lol. He is so talented in anything he sings. That rasp in his voice is so incredible! Great review
@@AileenSenpai Yes Aileen it sure does. David even thought it wasn't one of his better performances because as he sang this live... He had an upper respiratory infection and he still pulled this off like he did! I enjoy your content. You know exactly what your talking about and your personality is just awesome too! Good luck on your channel. Keep up the great work.
"Almost gives you a little bit of chills"? I froze my damn nipples off with chills when I heard this. This is, without a doubt, one of the best songs and performances I've ever seen or heard. Ever.
i like to see, all those who have rated, this song, they all start to sit and smile after a while and many end up with, not to say anything but WOW afterwards...lol
Not sure if anyone has mentioned it yet, but don't forget that he was sick with a cold during this performance hence the extra nasal sound in his voice. Still amazing.
David of Disturbed, He was full of flu that night on Conan! but still producing a masterful performance! You have to get the lyrics and watch the official video, (another masterpiece) to be on your own and play a couple of times, as it brings out emotions from your subconscious, that I couldn’t tell anyone, yet this beautiful version, has done that, not in a bad way but that’s how this masterpiece of a video and the Disturbed, which I will say now, is the best cover, ever, that can make me think, also produce tears about things I should of done earlier in life, Creating tears which is fine. Get the lyrics and official video, shut the door and play and watch. Stupendous!! Ian from U.K. ❤ 25/10/23
David Draiman was trained as a traditional Jewish cantor before he made the decision to move into the metal scene and actually chose the name Disturbed for this band. I have heard professional vocal coaches give their opinion that his ability to switch between his soft (angelic?) voice and the heavy vocal fry he uses, at will, marks his level of vocal control.
@@AileenSenpai yes, really...he was feeling bad enough that he was required to be sitting the entire time because if he had to stand he may not have been able to stay standing!
I sometimes literally watch 20 reactions to this song a day. You knocked it out of the park! Great way to see and experience this song, and now go and listen to it without pause, you will be blown away every single time.
There are good covers, there are great covers, and then there is this. Disturbed took an all-time classic and made it their own. No person or band should ever try and cover this song again.
He was classically trained, and was sick on the day he sang this with the flu. And even though he was sick he sang it so well that Paul Simon actually said that it's now his song .
This is an amazing remake of Simon and Garfunkel song… Disturb took it into a totally different feel. I would love it if you would listen to the original song. I think you would enjoy it and be blown away by the differences.
I absolutely Love this song by Disturbed. I feel his passion and it gives me chills and awe at the same time. My mother was a trained opera singer and ingrained my appreciation for a beautiful voice with range. 🇨🇦
He's a classically trained opera singer and yes in this perfomance he was sick and still killed it. His vocals are incredible. Definitely check out shinedown as well. I'm sure you would appreciate it. As would I for reacting to it.
I always hope hope hope that reacters wait to hear the total silence of the audience at the end for a moment before they break out a roar of appreciation.. That's a masterpiece.
Aileen, watching your beautiful facial expressions, and verbalization of what you're feeing during this song, perfectly convey the emotional gut-punch I feel every time I hear this version. I rarely, rarely like remakes, but this one, and Johnny Cash's rendition of Hurt, stand head and shoulders above others.
In the last 10, 15 maybe even 20 years I have been absolutely blown away by only two cover versions. This was one of them. I first heard it coming out of my sons bedroom back in 2015 when it was released. I abandoned all my plans for that evening to listen to more of it. Amazing work. The second cover version I discovered more recently, which I'd love to see you react to, is Haley Reinhart with Post Modern Jukebox doing Radiohead's Creep. Also her version of Seven Nation Army comes in close too.
This performance is a piece of heaven. Another piece of heaven is the song "Signal Fire" by Devil Sold His Soul. The most passionate metal song I´ve ever heard.
The story the official video tells in amazing…. It’s servers as a warning to what the world will become without music. It should inspire the support of high school and Jr High music programs. They seem to be the first on the chopping block when budget issues arise. As a former “jock” I’ve I can see the need to save these school programs at any and all cost!!
Don't know if you've since done any background check into Disturbed or David Draiman trained as Cantor in his Jewish upbringing; giving him the purity and range of voice. Disturbed gave him the angst. He's an AMAZING singer !!!
If you want a definition of "virtuoso" here you go. You're so right about not just singing a song, but meaning it. David Draiman is one of the greats and people who only know him for his heavy Disturbed stuff are missing out.
David (the singer) is actually classically trained but he decided to do metal when he started disturbed. You got some great reacts! I love them so far! I got a lot of crazy metal song you could react to if you're interested in getting your ear drums blown lol
You gotta keep in mind that he is a rock artist, so that raspiness is all he does, which is why it sounds so good😂 and this might be an unpopular opinion, but why is it that most rock artists have the greatest voices. Such as Freddy Mercury or David Draimen who is the lead singer for disturbed.
I love this version of the Sound of Silance by Disturbed. The build up in the song is just incredible and it is also a very emotional song. You can just feel the power of it. This song was written by Paul Simon and it was sung by Simon and Garfunkel. One of the original artists for this song gave Disturbed a great compliment by saying this a better version then our original version of it.
this live version of the song was nominated for Song of the year 2016 but David Bowie got it posthumously (RIP) David Bowie.. still this song always gives me chills and tears and I have listened to it probably 250 times now .. to show the different side of David .. Down with the Sickness is a must
Very late to the party but while nearly everyone says this is his best rendition of the "The Sound of Silence" I love his official video version due to the story line being played out in the video. It is so beautiful to watch & portrays the message so clearly it is beyond description. I highly recommend you watch it, in fact I will be going back after watching your reaction here.
It occurred to me, I just watched a vid concerning the subject of, "what is a MAN?" In some ways this performance exemplifies or possibly answers the question. Sometimes knowing when to take charge and be powerful (even if you can't) and understanding when to be gentle and soft. These shoes have walked many miles and I believe timing and situation are key. You can't teach this; you can guide, but not teach.
I am no expert, nor a critic. I just love good music. This, to me, is the best cover song ever.
Paul Simon thought so too

No matter what music you like (All Genres) this is superbly done and flawless in every way!! The best cover/song/official video these past 5+ years. \m/
The corporate bozos at NBC though that David needed autotune for this because he was sick that night. David was royally pissed.
"a little bit of chills..." what an Understatement 🤭
I remember as a kid the live telecast of Simon and Garfunkel at Central Park. Arts voice was like an angel singing this song but Disturbed knocked it out of the park with power and changing the melody slightly so it sounds a little like the Exorcist theme. It matches their music video to a tee.
David took a "classic song" an turned it into a freakin MASTERPIECE
His voice is otherworldly
That little Egg Head with his Voice damn... he haunts my Dreams^^
David's real emotion comes out here to make this " cover " his own by far!
I saw Disturbed perform this song at one of their shows that I was working.... it was amazing.
He was sick when they were on this show and he still absolutely killed it!
David had the flu when he did this
That last, clean note he held for "sound" immediately after the grit shows he's doing grit in a healthy, sustainable way.
The Official video is amazing...... depicts the separation of the Musicians...and the Song writers on different shores.....which creates the "sound of silence"..and the musicians build a boat at the end...to join the song writers..so they make "BREAK" the sound of silence.
On to: WINTERSUN - Time (live @ Sonic Pump studios)
An incredibly varied singer and a heart wrenching performance.
Love your channel so far, cheers!
IMO best cover ever. Period. This performance is so haunting and emotional. Love it.
I've been a fan since 2000 and I'm so happy they are getting new fans
Although he is classically trained (cantor) he is actually a heavy metal singer. Check out Down With the Sickness.
David Drainman's pure vocal range from bottom to top ! Great song building from niente to fortisissimo! Epic and haunted!
Dave Draiman nailed this performance he was under the weather too!
He feeling his own song 🎵 with passion, I can feel that he put much energy like came out from inside of his soul.
An another reaction from a vocal teacher. She explained how difficult it is for a person to go from grit singing to clean and he does so several times with ease.
Another song similar to this is Hold on to Memories, beautiful song!
That, that song rips at my heart
years late, but the crazy part of this amazing cover, is He was actually sick during this performance. crazy enough you cant even hear it but there are interviews with him where he confirms this. Just goes to show how talented he is.
He was introduced to music at a young age through opera. Of course singing heavy metal pays the bills and someone has to do it. Lol. He is so talented in anything he sings. That rasp in his voice is so incredible! Great review
His rasp is so beautiful. Adds so much character to the song. ♥️
And here he had a fever, he can do even better. Insane!
Seriously?! What a legend! His voice is so powerful
@@AileenSenpai He actually had the flu. Conan wanted to cancel, but David said no.
@@AileenSenpai yes, really...he was feeling bad enough that he was required to be sitting the entire time because if he had to stand he may not have been able to stay standing!
@@AileenSenpai yes, he was....down with the sickness....
@@SupremeRuleroftheWorld 🤣🤣🤣
You 're having some great recommendations. For a live stage performance, they did a great job.
That is a once in a lifetime performance on his part. You could see he felt that.
I know this song was originally sang by simon and garfunkel, but it was really meant for disturbed.
I sometimes literally watch 20 reactions to this song a day. You knocked it out of the park! Great way to see and experience this song, and now go and listen to it without pause, you will be blown away every single time.
Love the child sailing his bed with sheets as sail showing child as steering the bed taking control of thr path ahead
Paul said this about the very, very perfect Studio Version with the Video..... One of the best i´ve ever seen!!!!
even without music, this is a POEM.....anyone and all should listen to.....
This is an amazing remake of Simon and Garfunkel song… Disturb took it into a totally different feel. I would love it if you would listen to the original song. I think you would enjoy it and be blown away by the differences.
Far and away the best cover I've heard in 63 years of life above ground.
This is one of the best covers of this song. It captures the creepiness of the song and the sadness.
No. He was trained a synagoge cantor, NOT opera.
He (David Draiman) was sick when he performed this. He's a badass singer!
I would add Johnny Cash covering Hurt by Nine Inch Nails. Phenomenal cover IMHO!!
Check out some of the covers Angelina Jordan does amazing
Loved your reaction. Who wouldn't want to see more of you ❤️ ha ha. I go back and binge watch this song sometimes.
♥️♥️
It's raw, it's personal, it's soulful, and at the end, it's powerful and passionate...
He's a lead singer in a heavy metal band
The official music video is even SO much more powerful, spitting and all.
This dude has an awesome voice all around. You should check out some of Disturbed's original metal songs, such as Down with the Sickness.
Wa-ah-ah-ah!
Or Indestructible.
Inside the fire
This performance is a piece of heaven. Another piece of heaven is the song "Signal Fire" by Devil Sold His Soul. The most passionate metal song I´ve ever heard.
The singer was sick when they did this song. You should check out there other songs it's very different
Been a fan of disturbed since they started, this is the Best cover, by any group EVER🤘🤘🤘
The chills start at my ankles and crawl all the way to my scalp, every time I listen to this.
He's classically trained.... also was ill that night.... he belt it much better.... He's AWESOME
Don't know if you've since done any background check into Disturbed or David Draiman trained as Cantor in his Jewish upbringing; giving him the purity and range of voice. Disturbed gave him the angst. He's an AMAZING singer !!!
Give Disturbed " The Light" it is powerful!!
If you want a definition of "virtuoso" here you go. You're so right about not just singing a song, but meaning it. David Draiman is one of the greats and people who only know him for his heavy Disturbed stuff are missing out.
The range of David Draiman never ceases to amaze me.
David (the singer) is actually classically trained but he decided to do metal when he started disturbed. You got some great reacts! I love them so far! I got a lot of crazy metal song you could react to if you're interested in getting your ear drums blown lol
He didn't "start" anything...he joined an already active band and they changed their name.
"Classically trained" only if you consider being trained as a synagoge canto "classical".
And....he pulled this off with a cold.....kicked ass
My favorite of all time! Hes amazing! Makes me cry everytime!
You can't teach this; you can guide, but not teach.
the original was one of my father's favorite songs. i wish he were still around to hear this version.
