67 was an outstanding year for all American autos.
The full-size 1967 Fords are probably my favorite big cars. May be tied with the 1966 full-size Fords. When I was 3 years old, my Mom and Dad bought a brand new 1967 Ford sedan in the Custom 500 series. It was Wimbledon White, blue interior. Had the 2 bbl regular fuel version of the 390 FE. It was our family car until my older sister got married in the mid 70s. Then it became her and her husband's. One day when I was 6, I decided I was going to back it out of our driveway. So I took the keys, went outside, and fired it up. I was caught very quickly! 😅 I learned that was a no-no. Another time, me and my friends from down the street decided to wash the Bacon household cars. I dumped the pink hamper from our laundry room, got a couple of mops, and then filled the hamper with the hose. Then, my friends and I proceeded to mop the Ford while it was still in the garage! 😱 We also got our light blue 1967 Volkswagen Beetle, also in the garage. My older brother said we got his 69 Fairlane fastback also, but I don't remember working that car over. Mom caught us as I dumped the water on the Ford. I think that's when her hair started turning gray.😮 Many years later she laughingly recollected the incident. As a 6 year old, I wasn't the sharpest tool in the shed. 🙂

Bullitt is a great movie that charger lost a lot of hubcaps, that exhaust sound on the mustang.. I love 66 fastbacks an 67 fastbacks ( the 67 looks menacing 68 are too )
A great summary of this car, Jay. In particular, thank you for calling out the fact that beginning in '67, it was just "XL", no longer a Galaxie. This was a particularly nice example. In addition to the rare AM/FM radio, it also had a reclining passenger seat. And I'd take the XL in both cases.
When I was 18, I worked at the Ford plant in Mahwah, N.J. putting in brake pedal assemblies on these cars. The plant ran 52 to 54 cars per hour so one really had to hustle. No air conditioning in the massive plant but there were salt tablets and sweat bands if you feel you needed them. I would take an air hose and shoot the air into my shoes to try to cool off at least my feet. While I sat on the floor of the body of the car (no frame, engine, doors, or wheels as yet) a worker would be installing the headliner. He used rubber glue to affix it over the doorway while I was installing the pedal assembly. For the first week my long hair was glued together with this rubber glue. On my day off I bought a sailor's hat and worked with this pulled down over my head to keep the glue off.

The change over to the new model year started in the summer so I worked in on the '67 model in the summer of '66 to sometime in the fall. I was on the second shift. By the end of the fall there must have been a downturn in sales and the shift was laid off. I also worked building full size Pontiacs and Grand Prix on the same line in '68. It was the first year of the new body style for the Grand Prix. That was in '68-69 for the '69 model year. That line went a whooping 85 cars per hour. Back then I was a kind of a hippy and moved around.'''''''''''''

I always loved these Fords in Australia, as well as the LTD's., Galaxies. My child's eye saw a solidity and power visible in their stance. The engines weren't strangled, and they could really build up a head of steam under your right foot. Even as a passenger, they impressed. The dished wheel and central hub were so space age looking, just as in the Mustang. In Australia, we kept building the Falcon range, till Ford closed down production, and they were a terrific range over the years, many of which I owned. 'm curious why none of the cars available here had any adjustment on the steering wheel, not that it ever seemed to be a bother to anyone.
There would seem to have been an odd concentration of this generation in the tiny town I lived in at the time: 3 XL's. and two LTD's, some owned by rellies or friends... all the XL"s were 390's, and I've always believed that was the base engine! Maybe it was a Canajan thing. None of the XL's had the vinyl top. I can absolutly confirm that the speedo did not lie; I once took the family's '69 Galaxy 500 on an "authorised" 2-way run of 70 miles in just under 35 minutes! One of the most hair-brained stunts of my life (I was 16)...helluvan experience for a growin' boy.
Our neighbors bought a brand new 1967 Ford XL with the base 289 V-8 as their retirement car. They drove all over the country in it for almost 10 years/160,000 miles with no problems. The 289/Cruise-O-Matic in their car was smooth, reliable, and worked fine for highway driving. Of course, it didn't have the fast pick-up of the larger engines but they didn't care about that.
Most of the cars sold in the New York area had this engine. You didn't need anything better to drive in heavy traffic and the car wasn't especially heavy for its size. However some owners bought the 390 to get better performance although this and the larger engines got worse fuel economy. Until 1966 you could also get the FE 352 but Ford discontinued it in favor of the 390.

I’m another fan of these cars. Very sleek and not overdone. My late sister very briefly owned a ‘65 XL, but it needed mechanical work so she got rid of it, but I often wondered what that car was capable of.
I always found where they put the ignition switch kind of interesting. For Fords up through 1964 it was on the left-hand side; starting in ‘65 they were practically in dead center of the dash.
Our driver's ed car: a big fancy '67 LTD. Learn in luxury. I'm certain that in the case of this car the term "limited' referred to its resale value, because this loaded luxury cruiser had a 3 on the tree stickshift!
I didn't like them much back then but nowadays I think they were some of the better looking big fords. '67 and '68 were good looking cars.
Galaxie in the 1st grouping, but I'll take the Charger in the 2nd. My best friends dad was a local Ford dealer salesman so he drove new Ford Galaxies back & forth to work for years. I got to ride in all of them from about '65 to '73 as he would take my friend & I to school most every morning 👍
The 65 to 68 big Fords and Mercurys had some of the best style and performance during that time up there with the GM cars of the period.
Drove a 4 door 66 Galaxie company car they must had removed the power steering or it wasn't ordered even though it had power brakes, some big cars of the 60's had some strange option combinations
that Ford was hard to steer compared to the 67 Chevy van they had, with manual steering on that one.
First pick a 67 Sport Fury, second 66 Mercury Monterey. Like the yacht panel 68 Mercurys hard tops and convertibles even better, but speaking of convertibles being hard to find they are getting extremely expensive, unless you can find a rare three on the tree non muscle economy convertible that is not rusted like a Ramble American or a 6 cylinder Valiant

My first sighting of the 7 Litre engine, was surprisingly in an F-150 a friend of mine owned in LA, I could barely believe the way it totally filled the engine bay. How to get at plugs and filters and belts? That was my first thought, as someone who fixed his own.
Neat car minus the inside door release handles Ford was amazing in those days after 1970 Ford was in the toilet Chrysler/ Dodge / Plymouth actually had Superior Engineering to Quote the Great late Lee Iacocca the problem was getting the design studios within Chrysler to work with each other that was their major hiccup back in the day was getting all the department managers togeather on the vehicle as a whole these people need to be sleeping with each other these people were not even flirting LOL the Pentastar vehicles were always a little awkward in syleing when compared to Ford or G.M.s at the time

You'll want to check your slides vs speach as there are some issues with the slides vs speach. 1 is the 427 CI engine quoted but listed as 425 CI engine on the slide
That was Ford 427. It was really a 425 in true displacement.
It was so easy to turn these into screamers! Headers, open element breather, bump the timing, high octane gas... vroom!!!

Hi Jay! The Ford XL! A shout out from another Ford owning family! Those 390's were great engines. It's neat to see the differences between the 1967 and the '66 owned by the fam. The 1967 was probably the sleekest of that '65-'67 series. Those seat belt buckles bring back LOTS of memories! Ford used that design for YEARS! The 1979 Granada Mother owned had them still! WYR#1 I would take all of those! #2 '67 XL for sure! Thanks for showing us this one!

Take a look at the shifter, the cruise a magic, c4 transmission P R N small dot big green dot L, 66 was the last year for that transmission. Drive is the big green dot, the small white dot is a mud and snow range. The c6 transmission shifter is marked P R N D 2 1.

Galaxie, Charger. If you went with a full size Chevy and Mopar instead of intermediates in the first group, I'd definitely choose the Impala 2 door fastback.

Jay,I hope I am wrong,but I think the Fairlane was the name of the midsize Ford.I am glad you covered the fullsize Ford,I don't think they ever got the kudos that they deserved.I thought the were a great looking car,and I am a Chevrolet fan, but I think the Ford was a better looking car compared with the 67 Chevy..I have always liked the four door hardtop fullsize Ford's of the 66-72 model years in particular the LTDs. I want to say another great job.

But the glamour queen is the Galaxy, at a price that you can't beat, and, because your Ford costs less to drive, your pocketbook's on easy steet." Whew! That was exhausting!
My father bought one new. Yellow with black interior. Tudor sedan, auto. He had the optional air conditioner under passenger seat shelf(i think)
the "Safety Convenience Panel", I've heard FoMoCo literature call it the Convenience Control Panel as well, in a FoMoCo dealer promo film, in fully optioned style. These were console mounted in the XL and had varying numbers of lights and switches depending on option list. ua-cam.com/video/qVxjqoIMUVQ/v-deo.html
the Convenience Control Panel, located just above the front of the console, could either contain just two warming lights, or the full compliment of power window switches, a window lockout switch for the rear windows, 4 warming lamps, and the power door lock switch when optioned accordingly. It was pretty "space-age" for Ford.
Another beautiful car, thanks Jay! I had a 1970 Ford XL, 390 with sport weave high back bucket seats and select shift C6. I wish I still had it. As always, I enjoyed this video. One comment I have to make, is that 'idiot light' is a poor description of what those lights are for. They're supposed to alert you to look at the gauges, and are always described by the manufacturer as 'warning lights'. To be fair, it was (and is) idiotic to manufacture (or purchase) a car or truck that doesn't have both gauges and warning lights, but that's a separate wing of the asylum. 67 was a premier year for all makes. Some of the best designs and styles were present this year. First car that I ever saw burn rubber in second year was a 67 Galaxie 500 XL convertible. 428 and 4 speed top loader tranny. It was a turquoise body with white interior and top. A year or two later I bought my 67 Coronet RT 440 magnum with suregrip rear which would also burn rubber when shifted to second gear. It was a Torqflite transmission. It was a great time to be a teenager with drivers license and own a super car!
That was my car straight out of high school. I treated it like a hot rod, which was pretty fast; I remember from a stomping start that it ate up 1st and shifted out of 2nd at 90, and it topped at 120 reasonably quickly. You did mention a 390ci, which it came with, except for being metallic burgundy and a chrome molding separating the white top. It was the exact car in the picture of the red Galaxie 500 fastback, also not an XL
I had noticed someone mention 1967 was a great year for Cars and Design I would have to agree wow you made it very difficult to pick a car on the Would you Rather the Galaxy brought me here and I rode in many different versions during my childhood and frankly it’s impossible to chose as the Chevelle would compete with the Fairlane / Mercury Caliente and it was the first year for Camaro to compete with the Mustang / Cougar ( first year for that Mercury ) I am partial to Fords and love the 300 letter series cars love love love them rode in one in 1972 a yellow w white interior and I can still picture it an Amazing Car it was the seats and the styling the feel of everything was what also made me long for an Imperial secretly I rode in so many different cars in my childhood almost every make and model and Buick GranSport was at the top of my list very classy quiet and fast great A/C handled and rode so well nimble compared to a Cadillac or an Olds 98 , Mercury’s and Buicks were so special the Riviera and the Toronado Wow just blew me away the 1959 Buick Lasabre scared me for some reason Lincoln Mark 3 man I was spoiled the VW and the Manx Dune Buggy was so much fun handled like a go cart I could go on for a month recalling every car cause I was always ready to go at anytime and there were 50 kids on my street and every car passed through as many families in a ten year span from 1966 to 1976 and including my family and relatives, car rides to football /school / work and bike rides and motorcycles too I noticed the Kodak Camera Advertisement with the flash cube and that brought me to Christmas 1967 my parents got each other that same gift lol and I got a Hot Wheels set I really grew up at quite a time in this World and so many memories as America went into Outer Space , Landed on the Moon , The Presidents JFK and that shock to the nation and then Nixon resigned the Gas Crisis and now everything in between I saw cars from the 40s and some earlier as collectibles of just sitting in a garage to 50’s cars /Trucks being so affordable for 50 or a hundred bucks or cars from the 60s becoming 500 to 1000 dollars in the mid to late 70s then the upswing and now record prices of collectibles shattering records That said I have read countless Car magazines subscribed to so many I had to get a dumpster to throw them all away after 25 plus years of dragging so many around Cars were so important and still are and I really appreciate you for your Channel and the inclusion of Historical Automotive News and bringing attention to the subject and your being so young will educate people your age so that Automotive history will be preserved for posterity as these things have touched all our lives and those who came before us My Great Grandparents had horse and buggy’s and the Train was the space travel of that time period so time does move faster than you realize and although they are gone they aren’t forgotten in many of our hearts and minds chances are you will live into your 90s or beyond maybe touching the next Century and surely your children will Keep up the Great Work
The '67 almost had a Pontiac look to it? I think Jay Leno has one of these. I'd take the Charger since you could get a Hemi in it and it was a winner at NASCAR.
My favorite part about the 67 Ford Galaxie 500 7 liter is its beautiful Coke Bottle styling.

I keep finding out stuff as well. I learned a lot from doing this.. I’ve always been interested in different cars but once you get totally immersed in it, I really started the leant some cool things.. and still learning

Already owned a '67 Malibu so the Galaxie XL would be the choice
1967 was a great year for all full sized Fords, and last year they had stacked headlights. My father owned a 1965 Galaxie hardtop which he purchased new. I will add that 1970 was the final year for the XL, but there were 2 more generations of Galaxie. It was restyled in 1969, followed by a major facelift in '71. The Galaxie was finally restyled in 1973 before ending production after '74. My cars of choice here would be the Charger and Belvedere, although would prefer the Satellite to the Belvedere, but wouldn't want the high performance GTX or Roadrunner.
One tidbit you didn't mention. The vertical slit between the oil/temp lights at 12.33 is the HIGH-BEAM indicator.
It is blue on 1967-only. 1966-earlier is red and 1968-on went back to red.
SIDEBAR.....1967 was the first year for the dual chamber master cylinder as you mentioned. The BRAKES failure warning light is in the corner of the speedometer face.
That is an interesting sidenote about the HI-Beam indicator light being blue for '67 only. I wonder if it applied to all '67 Fords or full-sized Fords only.

@@ernielawI owned a '67 Mustang and two '67 Cougars. They were all blue high-beam indicators. I will hazard a presumption all '67 cars had blue indicators. I can't speak on the trucks.
I do love the lines and the front and rear styling of this model year of the Galaxie, as well as the steering wheel ! This and the '68 are my favorite models of the '60s Fords. My grandfather had one of these when I was a young kid. It was a four door, medium blue inside and out., with those same wheel covers. I remember in '71 my mom and sister and I, took a trip to Georgia with my grandparents in it. I think I loved that steering wheel even then! The next year he traded it in for '68 four-door dark green, LTD model, I believe it was. He could have bought a new model, but he liked that one better. He was older and retired at the time. I think I rode in that car once, maybe twice, the best I can remember. He passed away less than a year after he got that one. I think I loved the steering wheel of that model even better! One of my aunts and her husband bought the car from my grandmother, who had never driven, or ever even obtained a driver's license. They kept it for a couple of years before trading it. I would definitely take this one in the first scenario, in the second there would be the Mercury which I also love of that model year. 😎 Video

Very good presentation, however the Fairlane was still a mid size car, below the pricier Torino. The XL, LTD, and Country Squire included that nice 3 piece cast grille, lesser models had a stamped stainless steel grille. I own a '67 Custom 500 Tudor Sedan.

I'm a solid FoMoCo guy, but I have to admit, the mid to late 60's, style wise, GM lead the pack, other than the T-bird. FoMoCo took the lead again in '71 on, but put any Ford/Mercury up against Chevy/Olds... GM pulls in front by a lot. Of course, in '69, MOPAR left them all in the dust! LOL This was also the age of musicl engines. 15 years before or later, you had two options. Around this time? You name it! WYR: 1) Galaxie 2) Mercury

That is a nice car! My dad had a 67 Custom 500 as a company car. It was ok, but nowhere near as nice as our 65 LTD. About the conflicting hp ratings on the 390: the 335 hp rating was for the 390 Police Interceptor engines, which had a hotter, solid lifter cam. Most 390s were 300 hp. WYR= 67 XL for both, but the Charger would be cool if it had a big block.

Those were all electric cars blowing up at the end. I was thinking of a different song, but it would be really unforgettable if that ever happened to you.
We all have really bad allergies. My wife is going through it right now. The pollen is really bad here this year because we didn’t really have much of a winter. It didn’t get cold enough to kill everything and it’s been like this. This is the second year that we didn’t really have a winter.. a really cold winter where everything died so consequently the pollen is really bad
These Fords look sharp, especially the fastbacks. My half-sisters boyfriend had a new red 67 Galaxy convertible and took the extended families kids for a ride; there ware 13 of us total in the car! A lot of the exterior trim is stamped anodized sheet aluminum rather than chromed castings which makes it prone to damage so it can be hard to find in pristine condition now. Ford was phasing out the 427 engine so ordering the 7L engine option in 67 could land you a 427 instead of a 428 as they got rid of their leftover stock, but regular production cars were all 428's. @@What.its.like. I'm something of a "Flashaholic" or a flashlight enthusiast, so I deal with LiIon batteries all the time and I love them for their power density. But I also fully understand their dangers and how to properly deal with them, which is extremely unlikely to happen with an EV car owner who at most may have given the owner's manual safety section a quick glance once.
I do like the concept of EV's and hybrids and I'd own one if I could afford it. I also love ICE's which IMHO are still the best portable power source there is for vehicles. No machine is perfect, all have their pollution problems and drawbacks, so it's up to us to decide which way works best for us. I just like playing with words and phrases for fun, so for me it wasn't much of a stretch to come up with "extinguish vehicle" from images of burning EV's 😁

In high school a friend (his parents), had a 67 Ford Galaxy fastback. Yellow cream was the color. Nice to cruise around in.

The problem with the very largest displacement engines, even in OHC trim, was the engine weight, which sort of tripped the car up, and got in its own way. Not that I wouldn't want one, mind. At a certain point, the law of diminishing returns rears up. Faster, but with an enormous fuel guzzling habit, and tremendous weight. This is where European cars always excelled. Petrol was so expensive, so they worked on the power to weight principle instead.
200 HP isn't much, but if the car weights only 1.2 tons, well. However, pound for pound, those gorgeous stampings added something. For me, if I don't have to really stretch to reach the passenger door, it's a small car.
I was there when my Dad filled up the family car back in 68 at a Gulf station for $0.17 per gallon. Fuel economy wasn't hardly an issue here back then.
@@P_RO_ I get it, Australians pay the third cheapest in the west. So we still have big V8 engines everywhere, but I was thinking about the design principles, not the petrol prices. DOHC 4 valve per head high revving engines are one of my loves, as well as the lumpy V8 sound.
@@Steven-p4j The US was slow to catch on with the efficiency thing but we're there now; I had an early Honda Civic 1200 that could do almost 50 MPG so I can understand you. The issue now is that cars aren't as long-lived because of their design, and repairs and maintenance can't be done at home anymore so they aren't cheap. Other than the automatic transmission a good 'backyard mechanic' could do nearly anything needed with the old cars using basic hand tools and common sense, so even though we've advanced greatly with efficiency and crash safety we have lost an equal amount of ground in other ways. Maybe we're not as "advanced" as we think we are?
Had one! 67 Galaxy 500 XL. My son asked me one time, "How many cars did you own, dad?" I think I wrote it down on two pieces of paper.

When I go to classic auto Mall that’s like a 23 hour day for me it’s 5 1/2 hours to drive there and then once I get there I try to do anywhere between 15 to 25 cars in one day and then I drive 5 1/2 hours home .. I’ll stay there until 930 at night one time I left there at 10. I didn’t get back home until real early in the morning. I had to pull off the side of the road to sleep.
I’m trying to get more articulate.. I cut a lot of that stuff out. Sometimes I’ll repeat things and I don’t know why I do it and another thing that you should know I had a speech impediment problem I think I still have it, I had to go to speech classes until I got into like third grade or something like that. My voice is something that I’ve always struggled with as well. I’m not a huge fan of it but I wouldn’t change it because I’ve heard it for the last five years, anything different than this would be not me. lol =)

For some reason I thought this was a Fairlane 500 so it was supposed to get released yesterday. It was gonna be a double feature Friday with the episode and this episode when I looked at Classic automall to get the pictures for the car no where on there did it say Fairlane but it said galaxy 500 XL…. So I was like shhhhhhiittt I had to redo the whole episode or just about the whole episode. The reason the Chevelle was in the would you rather segment was because I thought it was a fairway 500 not a galaxie cough cough 😷 XL
They offered the 427 in the fairlane and when equipped with a four speed stick, it did 0 to 60 and 4.8 seconds. I might make an episode of underrated muscle cars cause that car I never knew existed…

I knew a couple of guys from Pennsylvania, from part of the Pennsylvania is Dutch. Interesting story of settlement history.
There are still many Amish in the countryside.
I live on the Pittsburgh side Pennsylvania is a big state. It’s very different on each side but there’s Amish throughout the entire entirety of the state. We have a lot of Amish here on the west side of the state.
They were called "Pennsylvania Dutch", but weren't Dutch but German. Some of my ancestors were some of them.
@@scooterdover2771 Cool, yeah, I think I got that explanation too. Boy didn't they look like Germans, tall and blonde, blue eyes, like me. My surname apparently has Dutch roots, even though my parents came from Hungary. Borders were silly in those days.

@@What.its.like. agree When you first look at it it looks sleek but the design seems plain but then the closer you get to it and the more you look the more you start to notice little things about the styling it's actually quite a beautiful automobile.

You hit it right off the bat, but for 1967, the key term for the Cruise-O-Matic is "Select Shift". This was the first year that the Cruise-O-Matic had a single drive position. With the stand-alone new "2" shift position, the car would start in 2nd and remain in 2nd, without automatically up-shifting or down-shifting. Curiously, on column-shift automatics, the natural shift stop was "2", which would have been the "D1" position.
I believe that 1966 was the first year of the dual-circuit brake system. With the lack of the power brake booster shows that this has drum brakes all around. Power brakes were optional with all brake systems, but a necessity with front disc brakes.
The "427" FE engine was most often a dealer-installed swap. These 427 FE's were the same basic cross-bolted engines as in the 427 Cobras. They were over-the-counter "crate engines" somethines equipped fan to flywheel and sold for many years. They eventually became boat-only engines with the onslaught of emission controls. These boat engines didn't have a pilot hole in the end of the crankshaft.
The 1967 Ford full-size car may be my favorite, but I'd take 1967 Dodge Charger any day.

RESEARCH PLEASE! Fairlane was NOT a full-size Ford as of 1962. On stretched Falcon bones - the first intermediate from Big 3.
This is a FORD XL not a fairlane 500
I had a 66 Monterey, it had the coil springs that ford put in the galaxie in 67. I loved that car. 390, C6, the only problem with them is that gas isn't free. I went to a lot of drive in movies in the Monterey in the 1990s, and it really looked at home in that setting. When I got it, it had 411 gears, and while fun, it didn't like freeways much. Later, I swapped in 300 gears and it was a better cruiser. The smoothness of the 390 is king, such a lovely motor.
