I can’t imagine the trauma that Anna suffered and is still suffering to this day. Anna will be haunted by this animal and his actions for years, possibly decades! I find it insulting that the judges penalized Anna for having NOT escaped earlier and that fact has NO bearing whatsoever of her kidnapping, confinement as well as the brutal brain washing techniques he used on Anna every day!! Anna didn’t receive justice, only a small measure of assurance that he will be locked up for 12 measly years.

Absolutely. Mental illness is far to often stigmatized. Mental illness creates challenges but rarely does someone mentally challenged in any way become a perpetrator of violence. The media overemphasizes the few cases that do occur. Most criminal behaviour is carried out by so called "normal" or "sane" people. Whether physically or mentally impaired or not at all, first & foremost, people are people.

I don't live in the healthiest of countries (Brasil, for the matter), but Japan's cases are always so sick. They have some sort of commercial stability, like the USA, but they totally lack the empathy for other people (well, as criminals usually do...). I don't really know if it's because we don't have the means to report everything that happens here, as we do have some barbaric stuff commited by the huge organized crime, but ,as I said, the organized crime exists for financial reasons. Japan's cases are always sick and saddistic, and happen for the most futile motivations, especially those covered by you. I know some extraordinary japanese people, but the crimes there always up te creepyness by a level. Keep up the good work by reporting it. If not for you, cases like that would never reach as far as they do.

But most the vicious , sadistic serial killers and child abductions happen in America.
The cases are ten times worse then this one, plus most of them get away with their crime sprees for over 30 years. Some never getting caught
In fact America has about 60% of murder cases run cold which is why these sadists get away with it

It is hard to wrap my head around the fact that this poor girl was able to escape from her captor very early on but wasn't able to find a single person to hear her out and offer her any assistance... but it becomes downright mind-boggling trying to consider the fact that, after not finding any help after speaking to a few people, she opted to go back! The only justification I can possibly think of for her willingness to go back into captivity, as opposed to continuing her search for help, is the fact that he wasn't really abusing her in any way. Even still, it's hard to imagine that she deemed it a more reasonable option than to continue searching for help, or trying to find her way to a police station... something along those lines. I'm glad she eventually stumbled upon her own missing person posters and found another opportunity to escape. I'm even more glad this psychopathic wackjob was found, arrested, and locked up. I just hope she is able to receive the mental help that she needs in order to get back to living a normal, happy life. What an incredible story! Thanks for sharing this with us, DT. Phenomenal presentation, as usual. Keep up the amazing work, my friend!

Can't remember the name of the studies but people found those under heavy stress seem to go back to familiar surroundings to help make the next move. Kind of like a sherlock syndrome the brain in an erratic state went back to a place that was familiar to itself. Similar to those in abusive relationships. Imagine going out and no one seems willing to help you..... your reality is breaking apart..... so with your shattered will your brain succumbs to the surroundings it has been forced to become accustomed to. Accepting the reality of a prison rather than facing one where people don't care about you. In a cruel view of it he seemed to be the only one willing to listen to her. There is also stuff like our brains would rather feel pain than boredom. Actual thing it's really weird, our brains crave stimuli so when its faced with non or painful stimuli it chooses pain, after some times of course. People and their brains are very interesting.

I'd have slept on the streets (in a very public area), or in someone's backyard or something until I was able to find a police officer and/or someone willing to help me.
