Good Day! And thank you for sharing with us. You have a beautiful and rather extensive collection of Mantids. I am a Disabled War Vet, Retired U.S. Marine, and I am very interested in starting a collection of my own. I have a number of questions, if you have the time. Do you have a website? Thanx Again!! Take care and GOD Bless!!! SuperSniperSal
I have a ghost mantis a Giant Asian Mantis right now. the Giant Asian Mantis is not doing well because it molted and it's arm is now weird. The humidity and the temperature was correct so I do not know what happened but anyway... Tomorrow I am getting an Orchid Mantis from Panterra Pets! They were on sale for Valentines day.
The Giant Asian should be okay if it can molt again. What do you mean by "weird." If he is still able to eat regularly you should be fine. Good luck on Panterra Pets!
His hook like thing is gone and it holds it up in the air all the time. It has a bit of a hard time eating regular flies using his one arm, but it can eat fruit flies all right... And thanks! I'm really exited!
Hi!! I really need help!! I don’t know if The orchid mantis is illegal here in the U.S. to keep as pets! I’ve found so many contradicting things! If not illegal what are some trusted sites to purchase an orchid specifically?
Gabriele Hernandez Keeping Orchids in the United States is a tricky subject. There is a bit of a legal loop hole in the law. It's illegal to bring orchids alive into the US. It isn't illegal to bring their eggs or ooth. This is where it gets tricky, no one is going to come to your door and arrest you for owning an illegal insect UNLESS you release them. NEVER release them that is something you could be arrested for. For me, I took the risk and bought them and for 2 years I haven't had any problems. I would recommend 3 websites: www.moonlightmantidsllc.com/praying-mantids www.mantidkingdom.com usmantis.com/products/hymenopus-coronatus-orchid-mantis?variant=21319515207 These are my most used sites I haven't had a problem with. They usually deliver on time. I've bought an orchid for each and they all have quality mantids. If you have any questions just ask!
Dan S I couldn't find any ootheca for sale (ootheca is the praying Mantids egg sack). But I've seen them sold from anywhere from $100-200. They hatch (I'm guessing) 50--100 nymphs but I would not recommend it. I've tried raising ooth before and it's hard. You have to keep a consistent temperature on the ooth to keep them alive. I'm pretty sure it's random luck with the male to female ratio. But if your thinking of breed them it won't work. The male grows faster than the female so by the time the female is ready to mate the male is dead. Females are better to keep because they live longer. If you have any more question feel free to ask.
Hey! The breeder I bought my ghost mantis from told me to feed it baby red runner roaches, and so far I dont think he has eaten one (its been a week) so what should I do? All it seems to want to do is hang upside down, but I'm not sure its ready to molt
Hello, amazing video ! I have a problem, can you please help? I have ordered an orchid mantis. I did some research on them and now I am confused. Mine will arrive very young could be even L1. I have read online that when young, they should be kept a bit dry and a bit cold because they are very prone to infections. Is this legit information or should keep them humid and warm?
I have never heard of infections in mantids. I’ve heard of parasites, fungal diseases, and bacterial diseases but never a virus. It is a bad idea, especially when the mantis is young, to keep the cage cold and dry for such a delicate nymph. Since the mantis is so young it will die faster with lower temperatures. This also slows down the molting process which can cause complications later in life. If you are worried about any sort of disease or parasite shorting the life or harming the mantis there are a few thing you can do to prevent this. First, for every mantis tap water is terrible. The Fluoride or chlorine in the water could cause harm or kill the mantis. Use distilled water or filtered water. Don’t spray directly onto the mantis this could weight them down or hurt them (I found out the hard way). Next, only feed insects to the mantis that were born in a culture or hatched from and egg. Parasites in wild insects sometimes find themselves in the abdomens of mantids and cause shorten life spans (My African Twig made it to adulthood but slow down due to horsehair worms. He died in January from that). Last, to stop fungal infections, never bring in dirt or twigs from outside. This is rare but for the safety of your mantis try to stick with store bought stuff. The hardest part of raising a mantis (besides hatching them) is the first days of life when they are young. Try to speed up molting and get the mantis to L2-3 as soon as possible. Feed the mantis daily unless it isn’t eating then it’s about to molt. I’m about to receive a shipment from mantis kingdom of 2 orchids soon so I’ll go through early life and just extra tips and tricks for orchids. If you have anymore questions just ask!
I’m not sure about Australia but in America if the insect is in the country it’s legal to buy and sell but over borders is illegal. It may be the same in Australia. The best place to ask is on a mantis forum, they reply quickly and have strong answers. I’d highly doubt it would be bad seeing as these insect have such a small impact if accidentally released and probably would die off soon in the wild. Let me know if you have any problems.
Yorkieman That's great! There are 2 ways of checking the common way is to count segments on the abdomen of the mantis. 5 is a female, 7 is a male. The other way is to check your Mantid's Antennae. Males usually have longer thicker ones than females. What Instar is your mantis?
Yorkieman Mantids have a system of aging. Each Instar is every time it has molted. The units are "L" L1-L8 around L4-L5 it is the easiest to tell if a mantis is a male or female
+Yorkieman If you sent me a picture of the abdomen at mantismavic@gmail.com I might be able to identify. It has to be in focus on the back of the abdomen.
Dan S Orchid Mantids are quite easy to order. Just pay around $20-40 on a mantis breeders website. Only one breeder in New York that I've used is selling orchids but other sites have been selling them. The one I used: usmantis.com/products/hymenopus-coronatus-orchid-mantis?variant=21319515207 Other places: www.panterrapets.com/products/orchid-mantis If you want to wait a while this is my favorite store to buy from: www.mantidkingdom.com/shop/mantids/hymenopus-coronatus-malaysian-orchid-mantis/ During the winter it really hard to find and hatch nymphs but there were still some around. Make sure to take care of them with the proper humidity, temperature and cage size.
Stiff Elastic Gryllidae more commonly know as a "cricket" has wings which they acquire after molting their exoskeletons. They do no fly yet they have wings. My theory is it helps them balance while jumping or running.

Mantises actually dont move a lot and most of them are sit and wait predators and don't require big cages. The rule for mantises is they should be kept in a enclosure at least 3 times as tall and 2 times as wide.

I have a shield mantis as well, I’d go ahead and say that they are generally an easy species to care for, mine is around an L3 or L4.
Mantises will always be my childhood favorite.so rare to find here on the oregon coast
Well fuck me. That's where I'd like to move to. What species are you able to find when you do manage to?
to you had an dead leaf mantis if you had it will be cool as your Collection
The temperature is not to hot to keep
it’s easy to keep
How often should I feed the African twig mantis, mine is l4 and stopped molting.
Grant Martinez a feeding along with a misting every three days is good for about 75% of all species
actually very interesting
Actually? Wtf is that supposed to mean? Mantids are dope. Really all bugs are, all animals and plants too. Go nature! Fuck humanity! Lol
@@RalphRoberts1 yea honestly humans suck I love animals every time I feel down or no one is there to support me my pets always are
Have you ordered from panterra pets before?
I have not yet. I've heard good things about them. In the spring I plan on ordering and reviewing their site.

I always wanted a mantis
Carolina Garcia I have as well. Wanted one my whole life. Just got 3. One asian and 2 ghosts
Does L1, L2, L3 ect refer to the number of moults it's had.
Yes it does. L1 is a newborn Nymph, L2 is after its first molt.
Cool
