I loved watching mine eat too, at long last. Only gotten to see it twice, but it was a glorious miracle both times. Today she ate a wasp for me (I removed the stinger) as her first feast after her molt. They're amazing little creatures. Tiny serial killer alien-cat-centaur-faery that you can keep as a friend and house guest!
Oh wow I just saw this comment! Mantises are very capable of hurting us but on a tiny scale. A pinch will hurt and may draw blood. If a mantis starts chewing on you it's easy to get them to let go. If they were bigger though they'd definitely eat us 😆
if you keep them in a temp controlled environment that stays around 75 degrees and you only feed them once every two or three days while misting every morning you can prolong their lifespan without stunting them. i've had many of mine live for a solid year. Just remember more food than means faster growth. most mantids in my area of new england end up dying from the frost in november not from old age.
One of the many ways I've killed them is to put many small sticks as substrate. I put so much that the babies could get underneath the surface but couldn't get out.
I love that shield mantis, they're definitely one of my favorite mantises. I'm just getting into the hobby and I've heard that mantises don't live for very long. Do you know of any particularly long lived species?
No they all usually live around a year. If you care for them perfectly they might live a little past that but I've never heard of a mantis species that lived a crazy long time. I wish they did 🥲.
also 100 percent agree: if we had a world where they were big enough or we were small enough for them to eat us, I don't think we'd be here to chat about it on YT lol
Great information, thank you!

It's so mesmerizing watching them eat! I love it 💚. Perfect description for them too haha.
I've seen videos of mantids eating parts of humans and drawing blood.

Bean weevils are a good, less smelly alternative to fruit flies
Mantis are so awesome, love keeping them,I wish they lived longer though, their lifespan is way too short.
I know, they're pretty amazing! I wish they lived longer too 😢.

@@tjames6427mine usually pass from old age in December or January,as they’re a native species and I breed them.

I hope you've improved your keeping skills 🙏🏼
