@@KioWatanabe hello i really like your video your awesome. Im james from new mexico and i wanting to have pay mantis for pet and to care for some plant but they will still be my pets
Is that true? I got an ghost nymph that was green and kept her at a pretty high humidity with real plants (I don'tuse plastic at all). She's now a yellow brown. I did make the mistake of ordering her from a bad site. Won't name names but most enthusiasts know. She came to me in pre-molt, even though seller says they NEVER ship during pre-molt -__-
Hi Kio, in my old apartment I kept 7 mantises at once. All were raised from an early age on a tree or flower (usually after the third strip). They respected each other, never attacked each other and only moved out of "theyr house" when I wanted to look at them or they "ride at a bus" (my dog - an Afghan Hound). Sometimes he didn't even know about them, but even though he knew, he just sniffed them and let them be. They were alone together and everything was without problems. But it was all just that they didn't need to move away for food. I fed regularly. Today I live elsewhere and mantises are completely free here. Yesterday I discovered Sibylla pretiosa while mowing the grass. She was beautiful! A little lighter in colors than yours in the video. She looked at me, I apologized to her and she flew away. Every year I discover here a new and new species that I have always wanted to breed at home. Here I am very happy to meet them outside. I'll look at them, take a picture and let them go again. A lot of them live in my garden, because every year I plant tall plants with many flowers, on which they really have a lot of food. So just like in the old apartment, they stay all summer on same spot. I only mow the grass and in front of the house I want to let them grow a meadow full of flowers. Already looking forward to it! Have a nice day.
I just got my first praying mantis today! I don’t know what species it is but it’s a camouflage grey-ish color and pattern. I found it on a hike and decided to take it with me since it’s abdomen looked skinny and not full... it’s awesome looking and I love it so much! I fed it live grasshoppers and I watched it eat it! I’m in love with it now and I love it!
i’ve had a sphodromantis gastrica before! big green female. my parents really didn’t allow me to buy expensive enclosures even though i had the money for it, but luckily yes they just stay on a houseplant you just put them on, even with a dog we never had any accidents
If you really inform yourself very well and make sure you follow the guides you read I'm sure you can take good care of an orchid mantis even as your first! :)
Great vid! I just adopted a miomantis paykulli (my first). Doesn't have wings yet and have it in a 4 x 4.5 inch jar I've turned into a terrarium (with a non-fine cheese cloth for lid) but I'm having trouble finding a good caresheet for the little guy(gal). How often would you recommend feeding it fruit flies and spraying water?
I usually just feed young mantis once i see no prey is left in the enclosure. They do not overeat so it's good to just feed again when it runs out :) I'd give a slight spray once every day so the mantis can drink
I'm looking into my next mantis species to keep and can't find very much information on the Moss Mantis. Would you be willing to go over their ideal care with me?
Crickets are poisonous for mantids ? That's a crazy statement many species eat crickets mainly , IV had 6 mantids and always been on crickets since l8+ and all lived a long life. Let's get our facts correct please
I've kept loads of mantis and always fed them crickets not specifically but it was a main part of their diet amongst other things and mine all lived for ages so I don't know how true it is that there poisonous I've only been told not to feed crickets as they can bite the mantis and damage it
So you know the infamous vid of a mantis slaying and eating a mouse. Was that particular mantis species the sphodromantis gastica ?? They seem the most aggressive out of all species..
My first mantis is an orchid mantis xD BUTTT i did A LOT of research before and I'm taking really good care of my girl. She just molted to her adult stage and is doing really well :) I know mantids are kinda easy to keep but still, they require attention and loveeee :)
@@KioWatanabe She is! She's a very healthy and big girl now! Actually today I got a ghost mantis as well. Got her enclosure set up and did a lot of research too before getting her :)
Ok so like I am super scared right know because you said they can’t eat crickets and that’s all that I have been feeding them since I got all of them a month ago as nymphs out of the egg case but even the biggest one has molted at least 3-4 times but he is still fine after eating crickets so yeah please say if I should stop
Also by the way they all accidentally came out of my dads car after we took an adult out about three weeks earlier when we were on vacation so I suspect she laid the egg case in the car and now I am trying to look after the babies in a totally different conditions then what they should be in any advice And lastly what species of mantis has a big red line running down their back with grey brown legs and a mint or turquoise green color . I come from South Africa if that helps
I’m thinking if getting a mantis. I’m 13 and I have a cat and bearded dragon (I’m also extremely gentle). I want quiet a large one as small insects honestly freak me out a bit 😂, also, preferably least expensive- any recommendations? (i have never owned a mantis only Gineau pigs, cats, bearded dragons and snakes) I find them sooooo beautiful and majestic, and would prefer a male (I don’t know how to deal with eggs, however if I decide to get one I will do much more research) what do they eat? And what does a molt look like? Tysm, I love your channel!! ❤️🌈✨
Oh it's a great decision to get a mantis! A large beginner species could be a sphodromantis gastrica or a hierodula membranacea (common mantis and giant asian mantis) dont worry about getting a female as the eggs they lay will be infertile as long as you dont mate them :) you can feed them any flying insect such as flys, moths, locusts... just dont feed crickets. Molts basically look like the praying mantis itself, just translucent 😊 i should make a common mantis questions video! So ask ahead if you want to know more
Strongly disagree with the part about crickets. Aslong as they arent fed carrots and are well kept for they really aren't any harm to mantids. It's just that BBF or HF is preferred for most species.
It’s harder to say the scientific name than the common name. Well seasoned Mantis owners will know most or all those names to say but it’s much easier to say the common name for people
Yea since it's more common to say the scientific names where I'm from i still struggle with that, specifically the common English names but I will try!
I'm surprised at how little interest and information there is about Mediterranean Mantids (Iris oratoria). I'm raising them from birth. They look like Miomantis Paykulli and are also capable of parthenogenic reproduction, which I believe all my babies were products of. Each egg case is small and doesn't make many babies. I wonder if egg cases that are the result of sexual reproduction are as fertile as those which aren't. I plan on studying them permanently, so maybe I'll know in a few years.
I belive you that crickets arent good for your mantises but when i got my first mantis it was a european mantis i only fed him crickets and he got so old when he was a adult he lived for another 4-5 more months
Nice vid, could you also include the common name for all mantids in future vids cus I have no idea what some of them are without pics lol
Im so sorry! I put them in the description for now but I'll remember this for the next video!
@@KioWatanabe hello i really like your video your awesome. Im james from new mexico and i wanting to have pay mantis for pet and to care for some plant but they will still be my pets
The colour of the ghost mantis depends on the humidity, the higher the humidity the greener they get to try to mimic their surroundings!
Hello kio, what can mantis live peacefully with.

Maybe, but I think a lot of it is dependent on genetics:/
Ahh I love your channel so much! Absolutely informative, thank you!
Aww lm so glad I can help 😍

Oh wow that sounds beautiful! I wish i could study native mantis species here but they are so rare, i have never seen one.
I’ve watched 3 of your mantis videos all 3 so far were really good hope there’s more to find
You’re my first pettube sub! You’re so sweet and knowledgeable. Really fun to watch! 🖤
Thank youuu! 😚
I love your mantis videos😊
I once had a Twig Mantis. They are awesome and weirdly beautiful looking. What did you feed them in their first stadium?
I love this very! I can’t wait to get another mantis.

They are really difficult to get hold of at the moment but if your in the uk just check mantis den every so often
I’m getting a mantis this Christmas! I’m so excited
I am owning a couple of mantids too. They are fun.
Had trouble with my ghost mantis and my Chinese mantis on their last molt both of them had deformed wings any advice?
That can sometimes happen if the mantis can't mold vertically
Thank you for the info trying to do basics.
this is amazing, you are amazing!
I heard that some mantis species eat raw meat. Is this true?
I never tried so I'm not sure!
Where can I order my own

Bei katzen sollte man aufpassen
that twig one looked weirdly like a stick. like really similar
That's what it's trying to mimic!
Kio Watanabe oh nice it looks creepily similar, evolution really did them right lol
If I do a LOT of research do you think I could get an orchid as my first mantis or shall I just get a ghost?
If you really inform yourself very well and make sure you follow the guides you read I'm sure you can take good care of an orchid mantis even as your first! :)
Hi I have had loads of mantids and I would recommend you get a spiny flower mantis they are the best !
Hollys life xo thanks so much I will have a look at them!
Richard Llewellyn haha don’t worry if you have any questions you can ask me I’m basically a human textbook on these
Richard Llewellyn I would suggest looking on mantis mayhem but keep that between us we don’t want them to sell out 😉🤣

nice vid. on average, what is the lifespan of these mantis.
Depends on the species and gender but I'd say usually between 8-13 months, females live longer than males though 😊 id say a rough average is 1 year
4-22 months, it depends on the species
Are mesh cages good for them
So interesting thank you :)

What is the best mantis for beginners?
Theres many. I recommend ghost mantis :)
Just so adorable tho
Can they eat honey and banana
I’ve had many mantises on a pure cricket diet but there’s a few types that won’t eat them like the violin mantis for instance
Yes my ghost mantides won't eat crickets
Where do you buy them from
Theres a video on this coming soon!
I would like to know where you got them from

So you know anything about Chinese mantids? Are they a good beginner species? Thanks
You should show some pictures next time so we know what you're talking about
I just realized how much you look like Jennie from SolidGold
Omg she does!!
For those not familiar the common names being included would be helpful
I included them in the description :)
i want some that DONT fly bc they may just fly out my front damn door-
EDIT: can ghost mantis and orchid mantis fly?
Almost all of them can fly. The budwing mantis cannot fly for example!

why not carrots for the crickets? is something in it bad for mantis?
To the other USA viewers, don’t we need permits from the USDA to own a non native Mantis?
I give my mantises fly's and grasshoppers
