- Today on reviewing the cheapest we're checking out a $60 action camera that really surprised me with how well it works! The Yi Action Camera might be the best camera in its price range. Being able to get very nice 1080p 60fps for about $60 is out of this world awesome and I'm excited to check it out!

Little late to this video, watching this on my Yi Action Camera.... oh wait.....anyways, I picked up one of these for $25 used. Pretty awesome camera for that cheap, I didn't know it had a door for the micro sd and stuff. Mine did come with the waterproof case tho....which was rusty and cracked....but still works!

Subbed, great production value. I just bought the Yi lite based on your recommendation. Im having second thoughts though, maybe I should have went with the Onreal 4k? Is it that much better?
I prefer the yi anymore since it fits in the normal gopro accessories much easier.

Yeah it's really close, I haven't look at the footage from the onreal in almost a year now but from what I remember they were really close.

What's the gimbal you are using in the video?
ive used one for 6 months now , probably the best cheap purchase ive ever made - i shoot mostly B roll and timelapses with it , and it works great when paired with an external battery . the only negative is thats the shell is prone to scuffing (and the door feels like an emergency exit thing as it falls right off ) and has no support for external audio

Having it on the gimbal strapped wherever you had it I think your chest I think made for one of your best action shots on your bike. Just my personal opinion Merry Christmas by the way to you and yours!

I'd have to agree, but keep in mind for example when you were using your iPhone when you're walking with it you're going to get a little wobble regardless because with your natural walking pace your bouncing up and down so unless you can try and control your hand from going up and down the gimbals going to keep the camera stable but it's still going to go up and down with your body movement. Just like when you were on the bike it's going to keep the footage stable but it's still going to bounce around because you're moving on the bike as you pedal and you're hitting bumps and stuff. The gimbal is designed to keep the camera level and facing forward it can't physically stabilize the footage though. That's why you love your Sony so much because it has the optical stabilization. If you could find a way to mount that to your gimbal I think you would be extremely pleased with the results.

I have this, and bought some aftermarket batteries for it but they were too thin. So they kept coming off the pins, so i simply cut a bit of drinking straw and it all works now :). Excellent camera for price, only issue is it can get REALLY hot! Like burning my hands hot!. I have the model with Panasonic sensor (check device code) which is better at 60FPS than the Sony but not as good low light. Also it is tuned more for selfies, so far out objects are out of focus, a small mod can change this however and there are lots of custom scripts to download :)
Wow thats nuts! I hope it doesn't actually burn you in use. I think its a really great little budget action camera and Yi is crushing it when it comes to the low priced market.
The Everyday Dad it's not crazy hot, must get to around 40-50c temperature, also in the waterproof case it can cause misting because it warms up the inside of the case. I'd say it's OK considering it's an action camera not a hand held one. But a definite change from a cool to the touch phone.

This is a fantastic value for 1080p 60fps video. I have three of their cameras and the only negative to me is the sound. If YI could match the GoPro's audio quality (and add GPS), it would be a true GoPro killer.
Yeah the yi’s are really good. I’m going to check out a higher quality one next as all I’ve looked at so far is their budget options
What type of ring light do you use for your videos? It does a nice job.
I use the newer 18 inch ring light. I agree it does a really great job 😁👍
I have two Yi 4K’s. I love them. The app takes away from being perfect for the price.

Have you had any issues with any of your GoPro or Yi cameras so far?
I've been using 1 canon g7x & 3 sjcam4000's for like 3 years now mounted on a Samson MK-10 boom mic using their frame mount + a 1/4 male to female thread - And they still work fine (though I don't know if one is a fake or not, but it still works lol) BUT, one of my cameras gave out on me the other day..
I think I've narrowed it down to these, but if you know something else that would fit my needs better Please let me know. Cuz if the one I get is way better than my Sjcam's then I might get 2 more (so, cost is a factor)
GoPro Hero 5 Black refurbished = $220 each ($170 after $50 trade in for my sjcam4000)
Yi-4K (not 4K+) = $150 from their website...but no trade in offered.
*I do like that the GoPro Hero 5 Black has the Linear mode (cuz fish eye looks weird on drums)
**I also use Screenflow 7, if that makes a difference with those 2 cameras above.
These will be for UA-cam drum videos, SO...
1. I don't really need stabilization (unless it will help with #6)
2. I don't really need 4k either actually..
3. I'll be shooting in 1080p 30fps, MAYBE 60fps (if I feel like it would look cool)
4. The cameras will be on a Samson MK-10 boom stand using their frame mounts + GoPro Tripod adaptor.
5. I don't need the audio to be great (I get my audio edited)
6. I've noticed my bass drum does cause the video to shake with my Canon G7X (1st one, not mark 2), but that could just be because it's heavy while attached to my boom stand.
7. BUT they will be in low light. I use 2 neewer 176 LED lights, black background on my walls, no other lights on.

It is only waterproof when it’s in the case. (The case is not included with the camera)
Nice camera!! Sucks it doesn’t have a screen though. Can you find a backpack similar to the GoPro one and compare it? Maybe you can make it a challenge to find all the things gopro has and find cheaper/better alternatives that would be really cool!!

I just watched your video then looked on eBay and picked one up for $20. Can't go wrong at that price, perfect as a 2nd angle camera or one to use when I next accidentally set fire to myself.....

Good quality imaging on it. My cheapy, an Action +, gets alot of jelloing, but I don't have a gimbal.
Yeah I definitely agree that this has pretty good quality especially for the price. Yeah gimbals are one of my favorite things, I rarely hand carry a camera, I almost always use a gimbal 😁

Is basic Yi still worth it in 2017?
If you can only afford $60 for a camera this is the best one I’ve seen so far. But if you can wait sometimes you’ll find the Yi Lite available for $70.

...and 8 month later it costs 40usd in the official Yi store. Is it still worth in 2018 or is it better to buy a chinese 4K-ish for the same price? A deal breaker I think is that this one doesn't have a built-in screen.

I think that’s just the UA-cam compression unfortunately you can see the same issues with the mavic pro footage in the clip.
Thanks for answering! so what would it take to get "clean" motion video? My Sony AZ1 shows these same types of problems in low light with lots of motion. I thought it was a device processing problem because when the majority of the scene is motionless the vid looks better. ??? Thanks again... I enjoy your vids, I have a select few people that I watch and your one of them! I'm just picky LOL

Yeah those ring lights are a trip!
NEVER GET YI Lite or Discovery.
Both of them - is shit, no scripting available, no manual override for settings.
They dont have any potential to give you quality. They aimed to replace good YI Action cam (with worst ones).
With YI Action camera - you can override in-camera settings (which is good!) and get some stunning things!
Like disable night-blurring in videos, tke long exposure photos at nearly picth black conditions, get images with correct white balance, shoot RAW pictures (you should convert it to DNG in case you want to process them to JPG), get crispy-cler night photos at any ISO you want (from 100 to 3200 and higher), make night timelapse, take high-iso photos in super-dark conditions and even get the Milky-Way picturing (iso25600 + 8" seconds exposure) right at plm of your hand! Thats awesome, isn't it?!
For doing this - use XYC (Xiaomi YI Configurtor) app on your phone - and it will crack down even yi 4k by the imge quality, in just 50$!
