One of the best Action Cam reviews I've seen so far. All the real situation footage + the useful hints about functions (e.g. that you show how that HDMI output looks and so on) really helps to make a buying decision.
UPDATE MAY 2015: Whilst the Stills & Auto-Exposure are excellent - I’ve had second thoughts about the video sharpness. After watching the footage I recorded on my motorcycle - objects at a distance look a little soft to me. I suggest you download some samples and make up your own mind.

Techmoan It's been noted all over the web that Xiaomi's focus is off when leaving the factory. Opening the front of the case and adjusting the focus manually yields a much sharper image. It is extremely easy to do, and doesn't make it a deal breaker for me or most people.
Techmoan I dont see this with mine. Im using it on a gimbal for my quadcopter and its image is perfect. maybe i got lucky for once! it definitely out performs my mobius
Andy L Mine had the focus problem as well. While not a deal breaker for me I will not recommend it until they fix the QC issues (focus and audio). There are too many people with these problems.
Andrey Viktorovich The samples are working fine for other people, so the problem is at your end. Usual suggestions apply - use the Chrome Browser, don't be impatient...wait a minute for the page to load. Other sites have restrictions with bandwidth and my samples have been automatically deleted, I've used lots of different paid file sharing sites and spent hundreds of pounds doing it - nothing has worked other than Dumptruck.

stonedcommander Yes - this camera appears to have focussed on video quality above everything else. It's good that Xiaomi decided to concentrate on what was important to them - because at this price you have to pick a priority, unlike a £400 action camera that tries to tick all the boxes.

BrownBrady How much wider do you need? Isn't it 150 degree??? That's crazy wide. Most of his shots were in the no fisheye mode which narrows the FoV quite a bit.
doubledoubleandfries Sorry, my post was a bit misleading. Some of the professional audio gear I bought included a ROLAND-R-05 digital recorder. I would never EVER use ANY action camera to record audio, even with an external mic :)

Cawfee Dawgg don't know about that some guy's on my quad copter forms crashed with them on there quads and they all say the camera takes a beating.plus xiaomi keeps updating the camera with downloadable up dates all the time improving it and there are even guy's who hacked it with some downloadable files to improve it also.It just always is getting better than from out of the box.

Not to mention the 1st gen Go Pro from 2009 with a old 5mp CMOS sensor vs Yi action camera has a new 16mp Sony Exmor R BSI CMOS. Gopro: 1080p 30fps/760 60fps vs Yi 1080p 60fps/720 120fps It's comparable to a GoPro Hero 3 Black/silver which are around 300-500$ online. It's almost a no brainer since it's almost impossible to get the first gen gopro for under 100$ used.

shenlonco yes the video quality is better than the Cube, however the cube isn't bad at all, so it's probable most people wouldn't notice the difference in 1080p30. I think there might now be some desktop Yi apps, a quick search in Google will point you in the right direction.

I am pleasantly surprised. The build quality seems very nice. Control over the wifi and phone works well. And the picture quality is very good. It copes well with changing light conditions. And the sound quality is surprising for such a small camera (suffers from wind noise though). I placed 2 videos on my channel so have a look... I am still waiting for the waterproof case.

The icons on the screen of the camera look exactly like my G90 dashcam. I saw that when u plugged it in your tv. I dont know if it is just a firmware coincidence or they also share some of the hardware, but the videos are decent, you get just what you ve paid for. Thanks for another great review

There is a software update for the camera. I think they watched your review and made a couple of changes. The photos are now taken almost instantly when you push the button. Also the front LED ring flashes once when a photo is taken and continually flashes while recording. There's also a few new options in the settings through the app after the update.

Hello Sir, pardon for my noob question. I do know that this Yi action cam does not have LCD and most of its feature are configurable using the app from the smart phone via the Wifi. Does this mean that Wifi requires internet connection to let me control or change some settings via the app? I got the device as a gift though I do not have it yet and I was curious on how I may deal with it if I am on a place that do not have data (internet) coverage on my smartphone and I need to take control of it via the app. Please help shed some light on it. I got this one too right now and with the newest firmware ( 1.2.13 ) it seems you can use it as a dashcam. I tried it but it does not work. You still have to push the start button before driving. The ring flashes with the little red lights while recording. Now you can switch all the lights off or leave just the little status lights on. Thanks for this review and this was the reason for me to buy this thing. It works with free android apps and with a paid WIndows phone app. ( €1,99 )
When you plug it in to a tv with hdmi does it always do 1080i or can you get good quality 1080p 60fps straight to your tv? I would like to plug it into my tv and have it display the same quality 1080p 60fps as it records.

We've come a long way now with action camera innovation. Action 2 from DJI is gorgeous.

I've watched several of your vids but I was wandering (as you have compared lots of cheap action cams) which is you favorite in the end. I'm really considering ordering this from China including a 32 gb card, waterproof case, an extra battery package for 84 GBP in total. Is this a good deal or should i consider other options?

The icons on the screen of the camera look exactly like my G90 dashcam. I saw that when u plugged it in your tv. I dont know if it is just a firmware coincidence or they also share some of the hardware, but the videos are decent, you get just what you ve paid for. Thanks for another great review
This was very helpful, the camera's video quality is in favor for me, but how does the Microphone compare to other action cameras (SJ5000 or even a GoPro).

Choose the things that are important to you from the following list then take pick the most appropriate device for you; LCD Screen, Car DVR Mode, Mic In, Image Quality, Price, Shape, Mounts, Sound Quality, Waterproof Case.

Got one of these, and as you say, its a great little toy. And interesting enough, that little lid covering the ports and SD-card got lost. And I haven't had the thing for more than an hour. Impressive! :)

I have a question if you could help of course, when you plug it to the Hdmi cable and shows it on screen what it's seeing, does it mean it can perform as a desk webcam? and also, would you recommend this as a cheap approach to a gopro 4 silver edition, or you think the money spent on a gopro is justified?

Awesome! Been looking forward to the review on this! Love that it has the built-in tripod mount, that's often missing from so many 'higher end' cameras.
Is the lens diameter the same as GoPro? Will aftermarket filters like LayerLens PolarPro etc fit?
There is a software update for the camera. I think they watched your review and made a couple of changes. The photos are now taken almost instantly when you push the button. Also the front LED ring flashes once when a photo is taken and continually flashes while recording. There's also a few new options in the settings through the app after the update.

Hello Sir, pardon for my noob question. I do know that this Yi action cam does not have LCD and most of its feature are configurable using the app from the smart phone via the Wifi. Does this mean that Wifi requires internet connection to let me control or change some settings via the app? I got the device as a gift though I do not have it yet and I was curious on how I may deal with it if I am on a place that do not have data (internet) coverage on my smartphone and I need to take control of it via the app. Please help shed some light on it. Thank you in advance.
I got this one too right now and with the newest firmware ( 1.2.13 ) it seems you can use it as a dashcam. I tried it but it does not work. You still have to push the start button before driving. The ring flashes with the little red lights while recording. Now you can switch all the lights off or leave just the little status lights on.
Thanks for this review and this was the reason for me to buy this thing. It works with free android apps and with a paid WIndows phone app. ( €1,99 )

1)i don't have android phone or device, does that mean i cannot change the video and picture setting? What if i use my friend's android device once to change the setting (video to 1080p 60fps, 12megapixels), and will it stay forever at this setting?
2) I don't understand what you mention at around 14:00 mark, do you mean it can only record for 5 minutes segment and then it will stop recording and I have to press the button to start recording again? sorry english is not my first language
3) Can i take picture at the same time while I am recording video?

I've visited purchasing links to e-bay, banggood and amazon. There seems to be more than 1 version of this camera or am I imagining this ? I want to make sure I buy the exact same camera that you used to record video in Picadilly.
according to other 'sources' this camera is in effect the same as the gopro 4 (not gopro 4 black) in regard to processor and maybe imager.
So, if you bring it on a plane you have to take out the battery?
Great review. I was looking to buy an action camera and thought this is the one. Well pointed out that you just don't know if its recording .So its an almost bought but not with that dreadful on off operation. Also why not put a screen on the back?
