    I was actually part of a experiment here in Norway, together with a Viking age professor. He had a theory about the Vikings used crushed bones heated together with iron to make steel. They have found a lot of crushed bones around forges in old Viking settlements. It actually worked!!! It was awesome to be a part of it.

    • @chriskenney8713
      @chriskenney8713 5 років тому +9

      Sounds brutal, and knowing some history of the vikings, it makes a bit of sense. They used what they had. Just about every piece they made had more than one purpose, passed on to the next generation. Gives a new meaning to "build a civilization on the remains of your enemies."

    • @user-bz8es4qw7n
      @user-bz8es4qw7n 5 років тому +15

      @@chriskenney8713 exactly 😊 a theory is, when a great warrior died, a family member or maybe someone else would take their bones to make steel and actually forge their spirit in to a weapon, making it powerful and special.

      Bone is not used for carburizing iron, but to lower the melting point of the slag when working with difficult ore. Bone is mostly calcium, not carbon. We have also used shells and chalk with the same effect. It really helps softening up the slag making it more liquid.

    You don't need wrought iron for the process. Any iron/steel scrap material will do it seems, but wrought might be more historically correct and proves that the process really works. It's quite cool actually.

    So Alec, if you remember that episode where you tried to forge a meteor, and it didn’t work, it’s because you didn’t do this. Meteors are high in nickel and other impure elements, so you need to melt them down into a bloom, like what you did here. It’s similar to Japanese tamahagane in this way, and if you wanted to actually forge that meteor one day, you should follow a similar process to this.

    • @zreiser
      @zreiser 5 років тому +9

      Another thing meteorite is great for is decorative inlay- due to the unique elemental composition, when tempered it creates all kinds of beautiful colors and would make great detail/decorative pieces.

    • @AKAtheA
      @AKAtheA 5 років тому +2

      High nickel steel would actually be far superior to just carbon steel (and far more valuable), but forging it would majorly suck...
      Tamahagane on the other hand is made from a bloom, and that has a LOT of various oxides in it, which is why it crumbles like cookies at first and has to be worked so much.
      BTW I seriously doubt you'd be able to just forge out nickel "impurities" out of steel, it alloys quite well. Not even the Bessemer process would be able to get rid of nickel from the steel...

Being a cynical 48 year OLD man, it is heartening and inspiring to see a couple of young millenial men being so driven, bringing such a vital human craft bang up to date for the next generation.
    It's very very rare that I am inpired by anything that the younger generation has to offer me, but you have thus inspired me Alec, as I'm going to seek out a blacksmithing course local to me in the UK.

    Love the tip about lump charcoal rather than briquets. Briquets have chemicals in them that will contaminate your “steele”. So for folks like me smithing in the backyard with basic setups here’s another tip: if you switch to coal get bituminous coal not anthracite for the same reason you’d choose lump charcoal over briquets. Anthracite is higher in sulfur and will contaminate the metal you’re working with.

    I mentioned this is the last video but in case you didn't see it: I have a Civil War Officer's Calvary Saber which belonged to a relative. The hand made leather scabbard is some impressive craftsmanship. Unfortunately for the sword and it's enemies it was not ceremonial and it and the scabbard are well used and worn down. It would be GREAT to see you put some effort into leather working for this sword.

    I loved the MAKING STEELE FROM IRON!!! episode. And although my shop isn't quite where I want it to be yet, I did get to do an experiment with wrought iron and carborization. Its unlikely you'll do this again in the near future, but if you do I've got a suggestion. In my experiment, I forge welded two billets of iron together, one I smelted myself (with the help and advice from the crew of the Louisiana Metalsmiths Association) and another billet that I purchased a while back. I forged the resulting billet into a knife blade. I asked around about how to transform the blade into a hadenable state, and I was led to the pack-carborization process. Its relatively easy and you should consider it in the future. By carborizing the iron in blade shape, the edge took in plenty of carbon and skates a file well, after quenching. Anyway, keep up the good work!

      The biggest assumption for the move has been the UK weapons laws. There was a lawsuit in Britain where a guy was found carrying a box knife on his person at work. He worked in a warehouse, unpacking boxes, was an upstanding citizen, etc. The knife was crucial to his job. He still got fined for carrying and using it.
      For a blacksmith who creates knives and swords and sells them for a living? Not much market over there... Hence the move to the US. :)
