    From the beginning what I liked the most about your videos is not to hide the mistakes. Your videos are about learning, not perfection. We all focus on the finish product... on demand, on a click... real life has a lot of parts to beautiful ends. Best channel as ever.

      To add to this, it's also about responding to adversity and setbacks. I don't doubt there was some swearing off-camera (very ditto for the situation with the first mill) but what we see is a mature adult response: Stiff upper lip, admit that things are not where they should be, and look towards the next step be that starting over or an alternative path forwards.
      You're setting a fantastic example for your viewers Alec, keep it up!

      I second this. I actually become much more invested in video series covering a project he is working on when things start going wrong and he has to improvise a fix or start over. I know nothing about blacksmithing except from what I've watched from his videos, but I can still acknowledge and appreciate the level of quality of work when it's all over

    Alec I’d blame using wagon tires for the wrought source being the cause of failure. Wagon tires are notorious for being a very low quality iron. They were a consumable so using the high quality stuff would be a waste for that application.

    • @aserta
      @aserta 5 років тому +8

      True, but there's also the unsealed fire that formed it to take in to consideration. Every time i've seen this stuff done it was in a sealed furnace with a pour box. At Guédelon (an archaeological experiment) they make this stuff on ancient form ONLY and they get really good stuff out of it because of that.

    • @broadusthompson1666
      @broadusthompson1666 5 років тому +11

      aserta that may be it as well... though as I think about it I don’t think there’s anything different between a “sealed” fire and what they made here. You are still blowing plain old air into the fire. The environment in the fire is going to be same regardless of how sealed the fire is, nothing from outside is contaminating the fire.
      Admittedly though I am not an expert on hearth steel, so I don’t know the specifics of it. It does seem like a very dirty material. If I were turning wrought into steel I would’ve gone for blister steel, where the steel is isolated from the fire and entirely.

    • @DerLaCroix1
      @DerLaCroix1 5 років тому +22

      Bloomery steel will always contain impurities... that's why people stopped doing it. Considering the materials used, and tgis being their first attempt, the quality of the product is rather good.

  • @ArthurEKing8472
    @ArthurEKing8472 5 років тому +35

    I'm going to make a suggestion here, something that might help you avoid both the decarbourization, and the impurities that you experienced when making your steel. Take the bloom steel after you've made it, and try turning it into crucible steel, placing it into a heat-reflecting ceramic pot, sealed against the air, with either some borax flux, or regular silica glass on top. (the glass or flux will act as both an oxygen barrier, as well as help to leech out impurities in the material, as it melts first) Once you've set it up, just burn the heck outta it in a charcoal foundry like you had, and you should be able to re-melt the steel, stratifying it, leaving it as one solid, homogeneous billet, without having to cut and fold it a million times. I'm sure there are other ways to do this, but I wanted to make the suggestion, as it's something I've always enjoyed watching.

    • @ominousrumbling9040

      @@gregsall5872 no they are on a purge of videos showing the process of making such things with materials available to anyone. Hence why matt's homemade shotgun shells was taken down. Shooting or showing off the ammo itself is not what they don't like. They want information on how to do those types of things to be harder to find and not available on their site for legal purposes. They were never threatening to shut down demoranch from what I remember they were simply just going to take the video down and if he posted any more of those videos which would break the tos for youtube they were going to strike him. 3 strikes would be a channel shutdown so matt decided to cut his losses and delete/unlist/privatize the videos to make sure that his channel would still be up.

    ALEC! Something that might help you a lot with drawing out those type of curves is a flexible curve. The one I'm referring to specificly isnt your standard flexible curve ruler. The only site i know that sells them is Axminster, just search flexible curve on their website. it has curve locks on them, so you are able to lock the curve or straight in place. Flip it, and have that same curve mirrored. I use it in woodworking, but dont see why you wouldnt be able to use it in metal working!

    Wouldn't a pinstripe tape work for defining the curve of such a blade? you are able to remove the last view centimeters and try it again. so during the application you can change the angle of the curve slightly. after that if your satisfied with the result, follow the line with a pencil and then remove the tape, which should work fine because it is not that sticky. just an idea, maybe it won't work at all :)

      Surprised that they aren't actually using a CAD. Not photoshop but an actual CAD program where they can mess around with widths. Not that hard to do, set a box with your maximum dimensions then map the curve to an underpaid issue. You can work at full size, then get a cheap plotter and print out 1:1 scale. Total investment would be about 4000$ for program and plotter but has the advantage of saving plans and designs to be reused in an workshop environment so each time you do a saber, chef knife, ect you print off you base plan and if modify it if necessary.

    Alec, you have to break a few eggs to make an omelet. Sometimes the omelet turns out great and tastes delicious, other times it is burnt and has to go in the trash.
    On another note, you've got serious audio issues and video quality issues lately. I know you've got a new guy but he needs to learn to stay focused on the person talking and stop panning so much unless the shot is of forging then stay focused on the action. After the shots of narrative and explanations, he should be coming back to record b-roll of what it was he wanted to pan to so it can be dropped in during post. Jamie, you are missed sir. Hopefully a little constructive criticism will get your new guy to learn a few new tricks. On the subject of audio, not sure why it is so bad lately unless you've lost some of your previous gear. I would have thought you'd have wireless mics on each person running back to a multichannel audio recorder so it can all be synced in post with the on camera mic and then you've got options in your editing. Your lighting is still a bit off as well. A gimble for the camera would be a nice addition as well.
    As with your sword making, I have full confidence you will be able to sort out these small annoyances in your production quality.
