  • What is this thing?!
Trying to document grad school one UA-cam video at a time, from lab equipment to genetics lessons to interviews with other students! Each week is a new view into life as a grad student, and the rollercoaster that is getting a PhD.

was expecting a magnetic stirrer[at least in comparison]..as I used in college days. I thought they were cool. This is cleaner, and good even for test tubes, but the mechanism is well just mechanical..

Our vortex mixer regularly causes our breaker protected outlets to trip, which is kinda annoying. Fortunately, I don't need it too often. #labproblems

Any idea how to calibrate these things? Or at least check for accuracy in the speed? I was thinking a tachometer like for centrifuge, but I have no idea.

I like how the mixer slowly moved across the counter at the end. My blender moves around like that. You can't just turn it on and walk away.

I have lots of kitchen appliances for mixing things and blending and so on that have those suction cups on the bottom so they stay in place perfectly :D

What if one need to mix for long time? Does a vortex mixer need you to take the sample with your hands or it can work alone with the sample on top?

Can I use this to mix powder instead of buying a full industrial V Blender?

How many times have you walked away only to have the Vortex fall onto the floor?

...But does it feel lice sticking your finger on it when it's on though? (I was always that kid who stuck his face on the cage around my fan because I liked the vibration!)

Hah, I've never thought of how to clean one. We generally clean everything in lab with 70% ethanol or Fantastic. Between the two we can tackle most lab jobs...

I wonder, do they make a more compact version you could hide in the seat of a chair? This could be a fun practical joke tool.

Your's can probably use a fresh set of 'feet' so it will not walk all over the place.
