Very cool process. I like seeing the insides.
Agreed, but I wonder what speed the crash test was done at
Check the nhtsa test report

pls dont rig the tesla
I was involved in an accident about a month ago. The model 3 we were driving hit an 800lbs engine that someone dropped on the interstate at 80MPH. The driver and I only walked away with a few scratches and the car was totaled. These cars are definitely safe!
So glad you were safe! And you forgot to say "and the battery didn't catch on fire, either".
@@richarda3659 It might've still caught on fire, but just long after they left the car - since that's what they're designed to do when totaled.
"hit an 800lbs engine that someone dropped on the interstate" Wait what? Was this intentional? Elaborate, i'm curious.

Unparalleled safety in these cars. So thankful to know that they are super safe!
Thanks Lars, great video. One if not THE most important reason I purchased Tesla vehicles for my family is the safety rating.
Voice is easy to listen to. No uptalk. No vocal fry. This is a professional.
Tesla may not be everyone’s favorite brand, but there is no denying that they are some of the safest cars on the road.
Not "some of", "the safest" car on the road.
@@paintedpony2935 Well Volvo and Subaru exist too.
@@1996ChevroletImpalaSS Tesla is safer. This is not up for debate, this has been tested.
Volvo does have pretty safe electric cars but Subaru isn't even in the mix anymore compared to Tesla
@@1996ChevroletImpalaSS - Volvo/Polestar is made in CHYNA , and less SAFE.
Subaru SOLUTERA is using eTNGA by Toyota = LESS safe.
Brilliant engineering! Love the concept of multiple paths to disperse crash energy. Needs to be industry standard!
It is.
Big Tesla fan here but Tesla would have you think they're the only ones with these features. They're not - all other auto manufacturers pay the same amount of attention and have done the same thing.
@@richarda3659 All automakers want to make safe cars, sure, but even though virtually all cars are very safe today, Tesla still updates their car designs much more often than legacy automakers (because Tesla is much more vertically integrated) and have a higher degree of crash data than what I expect most legacy automakers have. I know legacy automakers also collect crash data silently too, but I'm not sure it's as detailed or to similar degree. Also, I wouldn't be surprised if many automakers specifically design their safety for the official crash tests, rather than for statistical data of real life crashes.

The Tesla Model 3 IIHS Roof strength to weight ratio is close to a Ford F150. Big difference.

Wow. He opened the door. The front is smashed, and he opened the door. That’s what a true 5-star looks like.
Same as a Smart Fortwo then 🤪
@@ccalvinn
Yes, exactly the same. Except . . .
@@ccalvinn In a Smart you can open the boot and scoop the passager into a bowl. It bounced on the side when hit into a merc. A ute would jumped over it. 3 out of 5 stars.

Very fascinating. Tesla, never stop improving. Thanks for the mini series in Tesla design and engineering.
Addind front casting is going into another safety level...plus simplification of production = speeding it up, and costs seem to be getting lower.
Full blown up dev strategy
Can't do it when there's a V8 present
When you get rid of the gasoline engine, the entire front of the car gets dedicated to crumble zone saftey.
Smart, like the smart car 🧠
In a Tesla.. yes.. and a few EVs.. seen the front of the german made EVs? Or the Koreans? They fill all that space with other components now.. cause they don’t know how to design and produce cleverly engineered packages that reduce all that stuff in size.. now, they can and do design all that extra shit to also crush and go under the car.. but it’s far less efficient a build, and I suspect less effective.
@@airheart1 it’s true but I’d argue those components are likely less devastating than an iron engine block.
When you get rid of the engine, you have a worthless vehicle.
@@Dat_Sun bro still thinks we living in the 1800s🤣
Another minute of Lars, and he would have got me purchasing another Tesla…whew that was close.
Simple, straightforward talk about why Tesla and EVs are superior. Great work @Tesla
Lol superior at what? Being poorly made, grossly overweight vehicles that do absolutely zero to help the environment?
This is one of the most compelling point to buy a Tesla and most people doesn't even know they are the SAFEST car on the road, we need moire engineering video like this please!!!!
Tesla vehicles are safest! This video is mostly highlighting passive safety features, Tesla also has active safety features via software and computer vision👍 Go Tesla!
It is amazing that they just put all the info out there for the competition to copy. They really are committed to human safety to the point of helping competition.
Because nobody can keep up with them
Putting the video out there doesn’t mean anything.Any car manufacturer who wants to know how it worked would buy a Tesla and strip it down to learn from it.
It's not like any of this is secret, anyone can buy a car and tear it down to see how it's built and designed.
Manufacturers routinely buy competitor cars or detailed reports from third party to understand how they are built and if anything can be copied or improved. Short youtube video is irrelevant
Any car maker can buy a Tesla, tear it down, and try to copy it but why don’t they do it? It’s because of cost of scale. There’s no way other legacy car makers can copy the way the castings are manufactured at the same efficiency (cost and time) as Tesla.
There was a live crash test this guy did a few months ago off Highway 1 at Devils Slide with a Model Y. Purposely drove off a 250ft or 300ft cliff. I think the driver/father/husband thinking in his jail cell was surprised that everyone survived
Awesome, simple to understand video. Hopefully Tesla does more of these. Amazing safety-first engineering being done by Tesla who is leading everyone, again.
This is so much better than my Classic VW Type 2 Van, where the crash protection system is called "Your Legs"
Hoping to see more of Lars and his team!
Thank you for all your efforts and emphasis on safety…and for sharing this information. Keep up the amazing work!
I totally appreciate all the thoughtful design dynamics and mechanics. Go Tesla!🎉
I'm trusting your team with my life and the lives of my family! Thank you for your commitment to quality!
Awesome stuff, please keep up the Lars explained series!!!
Superb concise explanation of the design considerations in the Model 3 frontal crash protection systems thanks Lars.
These are model Y, not 3
Awesome part of what makes Teslas so safe and how they work! Awesome video can't wait to see more in the future!
It would be nice if we could clean up the existing lithium sites before we moved forward with this tax cattle sham.
@@Dat_Sun Let’s also clean up the existing oil drilling/refining sites which also use lots of cobalt. Oh wait…
Prepare for what you’re abt to see.
Tesla
@@waynelewis9110 Oh come on that's ridiculous, it's used as a catalyst and it's not even required it can be done with steam processes as well. The incredibly small amount that is used, pays itself off with vast amounts of energy. Unlike electric vehicles which are essentially a fossil fuel storage battery on wheels.
Electric vehicles don't last, which is a huge problem because manufacturing a vehicle leaves a massive manufacturing footprint.
@@waynelewis9110 There is several organizations working to clean up the abandoned oil wells in our country. It's not a huge problem anyways, and currently people are held responsible, both interested and property owners.
Love to see the passion for safety, the single biggest reason for me buying a model y for our family!
Very well explained and simple to understand. Well done to the Tesla engineers for making such a safe car. Congratulations Lars!
"Safety by design" is was comes to my mind. Excellent work!.
Though, the video ended abruptly, I was expecting fade out effect or something similar and a Tesla logo at the end 😊
Nothing short of engineering genius
I would love to watch an hour or two documentary on this. More please

Brilliant engineering, fun to watch, much appreciated
TELSA is basically in the LIFE SAVING business! It’s immeasurable how many lives they’ve saved and the number will keep growing indefinitely.
Wow, the nitty gritty details of the engineering master piece that boils down to safety amazes me the most.
You should do more videos ! The castings are jaw dropping.
Wow those castings look amazing! Go Tesla!

Fantastic to see 'under the skin' and to get a small glimpse into the level of detail being used here!
Great video.
Please do much more like these.
Of every little detail in your design.
Most people don’t know anything and not even how deep your engineering goes.
Would be great to see these instead of commercials on social media or also on TV (I don’t watch it but many do)
The world needs to see how crazy your team is on every detail
Why would they do the work for their competition?
@@Ample17 Thats a valid criticism.
But they have opened most of their patents to their competition as well.
The only metric that counts for Tesla is "Pace of Innovation".
IMO they could show every detail of their current cars, because in a month/year or so, it would be changed again to be better than before.
The mission of Tesla is, to "accelerate the transition to sustainable transport" and they should help everyone who wants to build safer cars, in the case of this video.
And also help them to build better electric cars for the acceleration of the transition.
The competition cant copy much without their culture and vertical integration.
Sure, as a capitalistic investor, it would be much better to hold everything closed up like everyone else does it but maybe this is a great rolemodel for new companies to build a better world for all of us, not only shareholders of a company.
As an investor in Tesla I am not worried at all.
Maybe if any OEM or startup would write their own OS for their factories and/or they would test all their cars like Tesla does and makes changes daily even possible.
But I dont see that for now.
Really nice to see more of these videos be posted, just quietly out here killing it.
Now if only I could afford a Model 3! Bwahaha
More of these kind of vids please. Very interesting!

Such a important matter not just for Tesla but for all cars. Thank you for making our trip with Tesla safer.
Safety is above all it’s so great to see companies that really really care about every little detail
This is the main reason I bought a Model Y. Sure, the performance and other things are great, and I don't want to be in an accident any more than other people do. But if it does happen, I'd certainly want to be in one of the safest cars out there. A car can be easily replaced. A human life can't.
Those castings...
Fantastic stuff! Love to see more of these glimpses into what makes Tesla's great!!
Thanks for putting safety first!
NICE!
Model3 owner and firefighter here. I recognize that occupant extraction is less likely to be needed in a passenger compartment that is protected by such great passive safety features, but in the event that a passenger does need extraction tools, i.e. ‘jaws of life’ I would someday want to see how a dashboard displacement procedure is done on a front casting Model Y.

Armchair Safety expert here-been studying crashes as an amateur for over 20 years. I applaud Tesla for the job they did on the Model Y. In terms of crush measurements and injury measurements, Tesla easily hands down beats the majority of cars out there. I’ve never seen any car come back with lower injury force measurements! Tesla model Y all around is the safest car in the world. Also that’s excellent to see the upper engagement points (load paths) so high up and down low. That’s dedication to detail right there!!! Also kudos to Tesla acing IIHS side impact 2.0. Rockstar performance!!!!!!
