  • As my time with this 1978 Porsche 911SC was almost up, I was able to sneak in this driving session up my favorite mountain road. With the steering column and shifter linkage sorted out (as seen in my last video), it was much more fun to drive. I rigged up some microphones around the car and 3 cameras to capture the drive and enjoy the sound of the unique 3.0-liter flat 6 air-cooled engine.
    That said, this road is pretty narrow and windy with many blind corners, so this isn't really a "full beans" drive, though still spirited, fun, and scenic. Don't roast me too hard as this was only my 2nd time driving the car (or any 911 for that matter) which belongs to a friend.

    Man, these videos have been unlocking some memories for me - my dad had a '74 911 up until I was about 10. All that's missing is the smell of the interior, along with a light whiff of burning oil.

    I hope to see more Porsche content on your channel, along with your Miata content. Dave Nagel does some nice “drive through the twisties” videos like this, but I love the view over the hood line, and your attention to the sound of that glorious flat 6. My only concern and caution is that you were laboring the engine at low rpm and a gear high through most of the drive. I’m sure you were thinking to “take it easy” since it’s not your car, but laboring the engine can actually create more wear on these engines. It’s also the weakest part of the power band. Had you stayed a gear lower and about 1k to 2k rpm higher, you would have felt more exhilarated and engaged in the drive as it accelerates faster in that engine state. Not read lining it, just keeping it in the higher rpm band. It’s actually less laborious and heat soaking. Oh one more tip from personal experience, check water content of brake fluid and change if even marginal. I boiled brake fluid on that very road. Down shifting and ebraking most of the back to town.
    Thanks for the 911 eargasm.

      Thanks! And you're right, in hindsight I would have liked to drive a little differently. Though as you know, this is mostly a 2nd gear road, so to go any lower I'd have to be in 1st much of the time, which is counterintuitive to me. I've always thought that you shouldn't be downshifting to 1st when in motion, it's just a gear to get you moving. But maybe not the case with a car like this. Anyway I'd love to have more Porsche seat time, just need to find another one I can borrow!

      @@AndrewDoesCarStuff you are correct about 1st gear, especially with the 915 transmissions in early-ish 911’s & 914’s. I don’t think there’s a synchro between 1st & second. That’s why so many upgrade to the G50 transmission. The 915 transmission in my 914 is super picky, I have to be rolling to get 1st, but no more than 8mph.
      As you pointed out, the best acceleration torque in early air cooled 911’s is between 4k & red line, which you were being good not to go over 6k. I suppose I tend to drive that road a bit faster and only labor the engine at low rpm when there bicycles or people, and I only rip when I can see that it’s clear.
      I love seeing someone else’s drive on these roads. Hope to see you at C&C when the Miata club comes through again. In 2019 there were close to 40 Miatas at LaCumbre when C&C used to be held there. I think there was a Miata convention happening somewhere, so they all met there.
      Cheers!

    Wired up!
    For those looking to emulate this with a little less cabling you can get away with Rode's wireless Go ii, but the SQ may not match an external recorder with all the trimmings ( which sounds fantastic btw)

      Thanks! I've only briefly experimented with using wireless mics for this, but it seemed they couldn't handle the SPL (sound pressure level) in this application without blowing out. Sure would be nice to not deal with wires though.

      @@AndrewDoesCarStuff I've had similar issues. I think 32 bit float onboard will start to cure that when it becomes common. Plus, the latest Go will run an external mic. The future is wireless. I'm not sure today really is ☺️

    • @AndrewDoesCarStuff
      @AndrewDoesCarStuff  2 місяці тому +1

      Somewhat! Definitely more enjoyable with the steering & shifter fixed. Still feels a bit cumbersome, but handles well on a road like this. This was shot before I had posted the first vid, so had I read all the comments before this, I would have tried to stay higher in the rev range. All in all, I think it's a cool car in a lot of ways, but I'm still not totally sold. Still very curious to try other generations.

      @@AndrewDoesCarStuff ....I said, "I think"! how sure can i be, listening to it, just from the video. you can test it by removing, as it works, one by one the spark wires and if there is one that does not make it stumble, then what can I say, that's how the 6-cylinder boxer works! thanks for replying to my comment!

    • @AndrewDoesCarStuff
      @AndrewDoesCarStuff  2 місяці тому

      Yep, fair assessment. Not the safest road to drive hard on, and I still had very little seat time to get used to pushing it. Still fun though!

      How did you like it after the fixes and the drive? Any better or did it still feel heavy and sluggish to you?

    • @AndrewDoesCarStuff
      @AndrewDoesCarStuff  2 місяці тому

      @@ericgrant6387 Definitely better! But yes still felt a bit heavy and sluggish to me. However I should have checked the front tire pressure, airing up the tires could have helped with the heavy steering. And based on all the comments in the first video, I should have stayed higher in the rev range to get the best responsiveness out of it. But this would have meant screaming around in 1st gear on much of this tight road. Most of this drive was in 2nd gear. I still have it in my head not to shift down to 1st when in motion.
