The Mysteries of the Opel CIH Cylinder Head: DIY Refresh at Home!
My 1973 Opel Manta A has had oil seeping out around the cylinder head for quite some time. It wasn't enough to be super worried about, but it also made it impossible to keep a clean engine bay. Also, I've always had a bit of smoke out the exhaust when I started the car up. I was dreading this job, as I'm anything but a professional mechanic, but I knew I would have to remove the cylinder head to solve both of these issues.
What I found as I went through this project: My cylinder head is from an earlier Opel, probably a 1970. I also had the wrong head gasket, the wrong valve seals, half of the valve keepers were wrong, and the wrong cam button, just to name a few fun discoveries.
I took my time to learn about the differences between the early 10-bolt, solid lifter cylinder head that I have, and the later 12-bolt hydraulic lifter heads. I eventually sourced all the right parts and was able to replace the valve seals and head gasket. While I was at it, I also installed an oil level extender, extended timing chain tensioner, and a new cam button.
This was quite a long project, and a long video to boot. I learned a lot, and I hope you'll enjoy it!

Solo Brake Bleeding: The Genius and Stupidity of the Gunson Eezibleed
Переглядів 2,6 тис.6 місяців тому
The product I'm testing in this video is almost really great. It's a device which allows you to bleed your vehicle's brakes (or hydraulic clutch) by yourself without any fancy shop equipment, aside from maybe a tire inflator. By hooking it up to a spare tire, you can use that air pressure to push old brake fluid and air bubbles through the system while you go around the car to crack open the bl...
Mic'd Up: Porsche 911SC - 3.0L Flat 6 - Mountain Drive
Переглядів 3,5 тис.8 місяців тому
As my time with this 1978 Porsche 911SC was almost up, I was able to sneak in this driving session up my favorite mountain road. With the steering column and shifter linkage sorted out (as seen in my last video), it was much more fun to drive. I rigged up some microphones around the car and 3 cameras to capture the drive and enjoy the sound of the unique 3.0-liter flat 6 air-cooled engine. That...
Much better! Fixing the sloppy steering & shifter on a 911SC.

In my last video, I drove a Porsche 911 for the first time and gave my initial impressions of what it was like. The specific car that I got the opportunity to borrow was a 1978 911SC, and while it was very cool to drive an air-cooled 911, it had some issues. The things that spoiled the experience the most were the wobbly steering column and loose shifter. See that video here if you missed it: u...
I think I like my Miata better... first impressions driving an air-cooled Porsche 911 SC

This is my real first experience with a Porsche 911 of any generation. I've always been a bit cynical about them from afar, but naturally intrigued by their huge popularity among car enthusiasts. There must be a reason, right? So I jumped at the chance to experience one for myself when it came up. This particular car is a 1978 Porsche 911SC. It has a air-cooled 3.0 liter 6-cylinder boxer engine...

Halogen or LED? Headlight Bulb Battle - Flosser Rally vs. Auxito Q16

Let's face it, old cars don't have the brightest headlights. The struggle is made worse when you share the road with modern cars with crazy-bright LED headlights. So if you want to upgrade the headlights in your older car, like my 1992 Volvo 240 wagon, what's the best way to go? Higher output halogen bulbs with relays, or modern LED bulbs? That's what I try to find out in this video. It's a que...
Fixing all the broken interior plastics in my daily-driven Volvo 240!

My 1992 Volvo 240 wagon is a trusty old steed. It's my daily driver with over 300k miles. Considering the age and mileage, it's in good shape! In this video, I replace the broken / missing front door pockets, the center console and cubby, and even one of the HT-204 front speaker mounting brackets & grilles. During the...

Upgrading my Miata's Front Brakes & Hubs for Aesthetic Reasons

You made the right choice. I also hate those blinding white lights and above all, they don't suit a vintage Volvo 😉 Also note that here in NL it's not legal to put LED bulbs in headlights that are not designed for it. You probably will not be pulled over and fined for it if they are not aimed too high, but it's a fail on the yearly MOT inspection, so you would also have to change them back to halogen before MOT

Thanks! I've heard about that rule, it might actually be the same here, but it's never (or rarely) enforced. So many people have blinding LED headlights now anyway it's hard to tell if they are stock or modified.

@AndrewDoesCarStuff What size is ur reflector style headlights? Since it’s a sealed beam type headlights. If u want to retain a nice 3000k warm/classic color temperature on a super bright led. Enter, Holley Retrobrite. Holley was teamed up with Morimoto and they make period correct sealed beam style led headlights for classic cars and trucks. Or any vehicle that uses round and square and rectangle headlights. They offer 25W 2500 lumens led headlight housing. They offer 3000k warm/classic white, 3000k golden yellow euro style. And 5700k modern white. I really hope they the size u have on ur Volvo. I think they are $180 a piece. But they are truly worth it. In compare to modern vehicles with full led headlight assembly. Price comparison like Toyota Corolla 2024. It’s $1100 a piece. With aftermarket from Holley retrobrite. They are much brighter and gives u a full width of distribution of light. I think ur gonna love it.

    • @AndrewDoesCarStuff
      @AndrewDoesCarStuff 2 дні тому

These are not sealed beam headlights on the Volvo, so I'm out of luck in this case. I've seen the Holley Retrobright lights though, they look like an ideal solution for a lot of classic cars. Pretty expensive though.

@AndrewDoesCarStuff I’m truly glad u came across bulbfacts. It truly helps to give us a better idea since they tested multiple led bulbs to see which one is the best that mimics the same beam pattern as oem. I always show this to others if they were not sure if it’s worth it or not, does it mimic as oem. This is very important. 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼

@AndrewDoesCarStuff U truly get ur money’s worth on second brightest in their line up, Auxito - Q16. These will not be truly reliable as they get warm from around 160 degrees Fahrenheit. According to car light reviews. So hopefully they still hold up well. With very power light. Keep this in mind. Don’t believe the lumens they claim. As much as I love Auxito. 15,000-35,000 lumens each is a lie. If it’s 30W it’s 3000 lumens each, if it’s 50W it’s 5000 lumens each. Keep that in mind. But these are incredibly bright. Especially that nice 2 year warranty.

Awesome stuff. It makes me much calmer watching videos like this, seeing that I can do it myself if it's ever needed - but hopefully not anytime soon My ascona B 2.0E just keeps running really strong for 20 years since I got this engine from a donor car (no major work done), with next to no oil consumption (did you hear that, daily e46 :P )? The only thing is an occasional cold engine clatter from a hydraulic lifter, so I may have to resort to the 'running engine' adjustment someday... Gotta admit, I didn't understand it either until I saw the outtake, then it started to make sense :D

Shitty example those problems are issues that need to be fixed especially if it’s for sale. That knob is anti theft . The wheel clutch and shifter are BROKEN. You Miata fan boys wouldn’t know a great sports car if it ran you over! Seriously though you picked the worst example get in a 993 or 964or better yet a 996 or 7. And 3000 RPM REALLY You’re not driving it even close to how it should be driven. First read some books on 911 and how to drive one then make a real video. And back to the thing with the wheel ITS BROKEN. Yes over 4500 you’re just getting started ahhhh so annoying.

Both are complimentary but vastly different experiences. The air cooled cars demand your attention but you can only get the man and machine connection to the fullest extent with these wonderful cars. that is mechanical based fuel injection but not like fully cam driven mfi Porsches . It is Bosch CIS. The 1978 911SC is one of my favorite Porsches. That steering column is lose. Common upgrade back in the day was an Automotion or AJ USA short shift kit. Now a days there are multiple 915 shifters available. In 1987 the 911 got the G50 with a hydraulic clutch. I very happy for you that you could do that. Imagining myself doing that work on my 91 would be very rewarding. I have done a few things but haven't been able to get to suspension yet.
