Fixing all the broken interior plastics in my daily-driven Volvo 240!

  • My 1992 Volvo 240 wagon is a trusty old steed. It's my daily driver with over 300k miles. Considering the age and mileage, it's in good shape! But one area where these cars always show their age is the interior plastics.
    In this video, I replace the broken / missing front door pockets, the center console and cubby, and even one of the HT-204 front speaker mounting brackets & grilles. During the process, you'll also see how to remove the door panels and front seats, as well as a look at the somewhat rare Volvo accessory armrest / cupholder combo with its own support bracket.
    This was a satisfying project that made my old car feel a bit younger. Hope you enjoy! Parts were purchased from Voluparts (no affiliation).

    An '84 Volvo 242 intercooled turbo was my first car when I was a kid. I turn 40 this year and I still have that car. I gave it a rotisserie restoration and swapped in a 1000hp turbo LS over the last few years. It's flawless and every single nut, bolt, and wire is brand new. It's my pride and joy.

    I owned a 240 variant back in the day, one day an elderly gent ended up going the WRONG way up an off ramp. His old battleship Ford pushed my engine back underneath my passenger compartment, COMPLETELY totalling the Volvo. I was able to climb out the back of the hatch of wagon with no more than cuts and bruises. Fabulous vehicle !

    With the seats out if you look on the underside of the seat, you can see that there is a adjuster handle in the back which is responsible for raising and lowering the backside of the seat on the track. Not a lot of people know about that, they are only usually familiar with the dial adjuster and the slider. I’ve owned countless 240s, finding a five speed manual is a real treat, but rather rare. One of the most reliable cars out there if you can find one that is rust free.

    On my 850, I used the extra blank panels (in the dash) to put in a USB port. The 1st radio I had installed in the car had 2 USB connections at the rear, so I had one USB in the dash. I had created a whole plug, and it looked stock (well, stock for 93-97).
    If (when) I get a 245 again, I'm totally going to do that with those extra panels. Gives the car a little modern touch.

    We had 2 240's, both were bought slightly used. Our first one was a 1975 240 L (Euro Model only. New body, but carry over B20 with single Zenith carb, stick shift 4 speed and manual windows. That car was bright orange. My parents did not like the color initially, but it was the best value on the lot and they needed a car right away (the Citroën Dyane was totalled in a low speed crash). That car came with us to the US and lived to around 12 years 120K miles until rust made it a total loss. That all black plastic interior parts and actually help up fine. A year with Tulsa OK sun and then upstate NY for the remainder of it's life. The next car was an '84 420 GL. That had a much nicer interior. Electric windows, sunroof, speed with electric OD, door bins. That had brown plastic parts a little darker color than you car. The dash cracked within 7 years and the door binds turned brittle and broke. That generation had plastic that just didn't hold up. We loved that car. We drove it for 14 years 180K before rust took over and become financially not worth fixing (Buffalo NY snow belt is hard on cars). Most dometic cars back then had rust holes in them by 8 or 9 years of age so the Volvos were much sturdier. Out friends had an '83 240 from Ottawa Canada, but they had the oil treatment in the doors and underside. That car lasted about 18 years so that treatment really works. Your car clearly didn't live in a place with harsh winter climate. It's a lovely example of "boxy and good" era of Volvo.

      I concur! These are called Coronas. Technically they wouldn't have come with this '92 model, as they were a thing you'd get with a GL model in the 80's. Volvo wheels in this periord were all named after celestial terms. The five spoke wheels I think you're referring to, which came on Turbo models, were called Virgos. In the 90's, I think the only alloy wheels you could get on a 240 were the Scorpius wheels on the '93 240 Classic.

    Last summer my 90 lb German shepherd jumped into the drivers seat of my 240 (no idea why he thought he needed to be in the drivers seat that day, but he broke basically every piece of plastic, bumped the drivers door pocket going in, crushed the entire center console (ENTIRE), walking across to the open passenger door, hit the passenger door and exploded that door pocket m on the way out. It was a perfect moment of catastrophic loss where nearly every piece of brittle plastic was exploded in a single maneuver.

      Not much, to be honest! These cars are very simple and robust. If you're somewhat mechanically inclined, it's easy to work on. Anything that goes wrong is due to age or normal wear over time, or negligence. One thing I had to do was replace the crank angle sensor, because the wiring had become brittle and it wasn't making a good connection. I did also install lowering springs from IPD and Bilstein Touring shocks all around. It could probably use a couple other little things, but it just keeps chugging along.

    • @AndrewDoesCarStuff
      @AndrewDoesCarStuff  2 місяці тому

      @@geoffreycarter3981 Sounds rad, I've been considering the fog lights too. So I used to work somewhere with a shop I could use, so I was able to media blast the wheels and put them on a brake lathe to smooth out the curb rash. Then just spray painted the wheels with VHT wheel paint & clear coat. That was around 5 years ago, and to be fair, the CA sun has already eaten up a lot of the clear coat. If I did it again, I'd either use a better 2K paint system or take them to a pro, maybe even get them powder coated so it actually lasts. Another thing that could look sweet would be to paint them silver inside the spokes, then diamond-cut the front faces so they're shiny, then clear coat.

    • @AndrewDoesCarStuff
      @AndrewDoesCarStuff  2 місяці тому

      That's a tricky one! I just looked at my car to try to figure out what I would do... two theories below.
      1) If you can remove the grille, that will make it easy to manually operate the hood latch. The grille is held on with two plastic clips with springs at the top corners, and tabs at the bottom that slot into the car. You would have to use a thin tool (flat screwdriver?) to get under the hood & over the grille and turn those clips 90 degrees to release them, then work them up and out of the grille if there's enough room. Otherwise maybe you'd have to cut / destroy the clips to get them free. Next you'd have to move the top edge of the grille out from under the hood, then lift up to release the tabs at the bottom. If you manage to do this, the hood latch is fairly easy to access at the top center of this exposed area in front of the radiator. You should be able to see where the release cable hooks to a spring lever, and that's where you'd need to pull in order to release the hood.
      2) If it's impossible to remove the grille, it looks possible to lie under the car and reach an arm all the way up between the grille and radiator. Using a long pry bar, screwdriver, or long needle-nose pliers, you may be able to actuate the hood latch from there. It does take a bit of force to overcome the spring tension.
      Those are my theories! If you need pictures of any of these things for reference, hit me up on IG and I'll see what I can do.
