Epiphone is where my heart is. It was my first guitar of my own. It was a cheap b stock explorer back in like 95 or 96, but I LOVED it. I recently just purchased an Epi SG traditional pro. Im blown away by how solid of a guitar she is. Love how yours turned out. Those zebra humbuckers take it to another level man, and the kinda stinger oh dude..
Thanks my dude! Yeah, I’ve got a soft spot for Epiphone as well (if the dumb tattoo didn’t give it away 😂), even the old stuff but the newer models are so good! Cheers bro 🤘
@@JackTaylorGuitars honestly I dig the Epiphone tat bro. Keep up the great content. Looking forward to your next review or whatever you have in store..
Thanks man! I can’t say I’d get the tattoo again if I could redo but I appreciate it haha The next video is going up today mate some time in the next few hours but you’ll have to let me know how the audio is. I tested a new mic setup and I’m not too pleased with it, hopefully it’s not too bad 🤘
You did a nice job! yeah its not perfect. I've done similar, definitely not factory quality either, but in the end its your guitar if you're happy with it that's all that matters.
Thanks very much mate, that means a lot! You’re totally right, half of the fun is the experience and despite its flaws I’m still very proud. Appreciate you watching the video, thanks again 🤘
Yeah, what you saw in that control cavity was actually factory stock. All the push/pull pots and coilsplit options with phase switching also, really crowds the small area. I had one when they first came out, and really liked the neck profile.
@@JackTaylorGuitars yeah, Epi electronics and wiring, for as much as I love their current build quality, is mostly done solderless these days with those odd pots. It’s part of why so many Epis these days have coil splits and phase switching even on like $400/$500 models. This all started when Gibson switched to PC boards on their guitars sometime in the early 2010s. It was great, in theory. Of course, good luck finding Gibson quick connect pickups when you want a specific one and good luck figuring out how to solder another brand of pickups into the Gibson connectors and if one of the pots on the board goes, iirc, the whole board goes. Good luck finding a functioning, used Gibson PC board for a reasonable price, too. The Epi pots may or may not be proprietary, idk, but at least the connectors used on them are not, and can be ordered online & soldered to any brand of pickup. Maybe useless info, maybe not.
Recently discovered your channel and subscribed I really like your honest approach in your reviews. I did a similar thing to a beaten up Gibson SG ( it was in mess). After all the prep I stained etc and fitted Graph tech nut locking tuners and EMG Super 77 pickups.
Just wanna say I really enjoy your videos and find them even easier to watch than some of the popular review channels. The overall quality of them is great and I hope you get the subs that you deserve!
Cheers mate! It was a fair bit of work. Would have been less if I wasn’t such an idiot 😂 But, you’re right, now I’ve got an SG like nothing else. Thanks for checking the video out dude 🤘
You did better with this than I did with a free Jackson Dinky I picked up a few years back. I also went with an EMG kit, I used the 57/66 set and absolutely loved them. It's tempting to toss them in my current Les Paul too to be honest.
Thanks so much dude, I'm stoked you liked it! EMG kits for this sort of job are just the best man. Get them in your Les Paul, it'll sound sick. Thanks again 🤘
Thanks so much, I’m stoked you like it! They’re so much fun aren’t they? You’ve gotta love breathing new life into a guitar. I’d love to know how yours turns out! Best of luck with the painting 🤘
Was watching your video on locking tuners with that cool locking sg and switched youtube to my phone so I could comment and ask wherever you got the bad ass color and found this video and answered my questions very cool color for the sg great channel I enjoy your videos peace out and stay safe
So with metallic finishes you don’t sand back it needs to be rough and then you lightly spray clear coats to lock the metallic flakes in place. Spraying to heavy makes the flakes lay down giving it that grayish color. Great job though!!
Now you’ve said it mate, that makes so much sense. Thank you for the tip! Maybe I will give a metallic a go again in the future! And thanks for watching, I really appreciate it 🤘
Hey buddy this looked like a fun nightmare of a mod..lol.. this is how mine will go as well I'm sure.. 😂 but you pulled it off man..sounds pretty good considering..and it doesn't look too bad either..all in all from where you started .. killer video bro . hope you are doing well
Hey bro! It did turn out to be more than I bargained for, that’s for sure, but it was worth it in the end. I appreciate that man, glad you like it. All is well here cheers dude, just busy as hell but it could be worse. How’re you keeping? Hope all is well with you!
@@JackTaylorGuitars I'm back to work and days are getting better..ty man.. appreciate you checking on me..I love epiphone and I really love sgs so this was def my groove.. playing my SG standard here shortly.. always a pleasure..
I think they’re great mate. I wouldn’t hesitate to put them on any of my guitars. They’re secure and solid, maybe not quite as solid as the big guns but still well worth it! Thanks for checking the video out dude 🤘
Is it possible that the "grayish" color that kept returning was from the original finish not being entirely removed and then showing through? I've seen other people use a heat gun in order to remove the original coating before sanding. I'm not a painter or guitar luthier, so I could be completely wrong. Just figured I'd throw the question out there and see what others thought.
It’s a great shout mate, genuinely good question. In this case I’m positive it wasn’t that this time because it was after about 2 cans of paint. There’s a short clip where you can kind of see what I mean when I sanded back a drip. Really appreciate you checking out the video and commenting dude!🤘
No, it's a metallic paint so when you sand it you expose the metallic particles. Metallics can be tricky. May have taken a couple tries but looks like you got the hang of it. It looks good.
Great video. I do like the idea of buying something cheap that is a solid base to build on to experiment on. Not sure id have used superglue though lol It turned out nice in the end, for a distance it looks like a SG version of Gold Glory.
Cheers dude! Mate, you should go for it. It's such a rewarding experience and a great way to learn more about your axes. I'm not too worried about the superglue. If I hadn't been rushing I'd have wrapped the studs in paper but I wanted a direct contact to the body. I won't be pulling these out any time soon 😂 That's kind of what I was going for man, I'm glad you picked up on it! The Gold Glory is sick!
Looks good and sounds good. Not every day you see a Goldtop SG. When you were stripping and sanding the top did you happen to sand through the veneer? Just curious how thick it is on these guitars. Do you know how thick the maple cap is? Seriously thinking of buying one myself.
Cheers Tony! Actually, when we were removing the material for the battery box we did get to the maple cap, yeah. It’s probably in the region of 1/2” to 3/4” if I had to guess. Hope that helps! Thanks for watching mate 🤘
Super sexy guitar, this is probably very close to my dream SG. I would add a batwing pickguard and maybe chrome pickups but thats neither here nor there

Cheers my dude! I appreciate that 🤘 I use Montana Gold. It’s graffiti paint, a Nitrocellulose blend from what I understand. Goes on super nice (if you spray it right that is 😂). It’s fairly priced too for how good quality it is. Hope that helps man and thanks again!
