I bought a '22 SG modern, trans black fade, last year, and I have never played an SG before. I was so knocked out about the quality, and playability of this guitar, I'm still learning all there is to know about it! Great guitar.
Just got a 2014 Gibson SGj, 61 Zebra pickups.. Best guitar I've ever played... As light as my Tele... Replaced my Les Paul as my main guitar! I'm officially an SG addict now.
Funk-style guitar is obviously more often than not, primarily associated with Tele or Strat single-coiled tones, but from personal experience, an SG dialled in properly (hold the gain!), can clean up really nicely in that dept. With some satisfying added chunk to the overall tone.
SGs deserve more love. Versatile rock machines and one of the most playable guitars out there. The Gibson models can look stunning as well. I get way more comments on the looks of my cherry red SG than the flamed LP I had in past.
I see why Gibson put the switch with the control knobs as it gives the guitar a smooth clean look. Sounding and looking good. Thanks to Shane for showcasing this awesome guitar!
Hey Shane. A really good review. I've had one in trans black for a little over a year and love it. Picked it up at the Guitar Station Sth Yarra, a shameless plug but Henry really looks after you over there. The ebony fretboard is slick and fast. A great guitar. The pickups go off, heaps of sustain. I play metal, hard rock, blues and this guitar handles those styles really well. The neck dive is not that bad at all and easily fixed with a wide, grippy leather strap. I have a Les Paul modern, same Gibson series, which has the same pickups and interestingly they respond and sound different in each guitar. Seems to have more gain and more focused upper mids in the SG. Pickup heights are pretty much the same in both guitars. Both guitars sound and feel great. Cheers.
My first SG, Epiphones version, kicks total ass! Premium guitar. Love the neck. It can sound like a strat, a tele or p90. Loooove the pickups and coil splits.
I would like SGs more except for three reasons. They are fragile, some have tuning issues, and neck dive. I went to a Les Paul Special to get those type of tones. They are still fragile, but no neck dive, and the one I have actually stays in tune.
Guitar looks and sounds great. Thanks again Shane. Good to see Gibson finally adding some versatility to a great workhorse. I have two lefty Tokai sg’s , MIC and they are excellent playing machines as well.
Hi bro'! i'm left-h too,and the next guitar i need is this beautiful SG modern! the 24 frets makes this SG a incredible model, and the coil taps, whaow! we could play anything on it! So thanks so much for this very good video,i had just to find the money to buy me one! Cheers from Reunion Island. Wilfrid.
My first NEW guitar, was an Epiphone SG Modern from the "Inspired by Gibson" collection that launched in 2019. All around good instrument that had some features I figured would get me where I wanted to go. After about 9-10 months I started noticing tuning instability depending on how I was holding it. The inherent design of these set neck mahogany guitars can lead to neck joint movement that's hard to quantify. It was too much for me and got returned. The finish wasn't cracked anywhere and I'd had it plek'd and everything! The action was in the weeds low and that neck profile is by far the best Epiphone had offered before the '59 LP's. I'm much happier with the LTD '87 Eclipse NT in pearl white that I traded up for. To each his own.
SG's are very special. I grew up in the 70's, and for me, at that time, they WERE the "sound of rock". Bands like Groundhogs, Blue Oyster Cult, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Budgie, and of course Sabbath, all had that raw, gnarly, SG "bark". It always sounded sort of "untamed" to me. Especially in comparison to the ubiquitous Les Paul. It is Gibson's "Tele". Which is why, to this day, after 50 years of playing, SG's and Tele's are STILL my favourite guitars.
It does look and sound, good, Shane. Thanks for the review. I got one of the Epiphone Muse SGs a year or so back. It's a similar modern take on the SG that took my fancy. .
While I'm not a huge fan of the colour of this particular one, I wouldn't be opposed to a flame top in a more traditional colour. I've got an Epiphone SG from years back in honey yellow that looks fantastic. And having the jack on the side is a great idea - it's one thing that erks me on an SG when you accidentally step on your lead and pull the lead. The tops always prone to damage this way asit's so thin. Whereas it's secured much better at the side (much like what they do with the Tony Iommi models).
Seems to be a very versatile beast that looks and sounds awesome. It may help me to down size... 😉 So I'll be off this week to find a shop in Syd that has this in stock to try it out. Thanks for posting Shane!
This, Les paul modern or Fender ultra strat... I can't decide!! which one is most bang for your buck and more ease of play and enjoyable instrument?? Any suggestions?
@@brianmckenzie1318 Fret binding nibs are stupid. Gibson should ditch the practice on ALL models, immediately. I just bought a Les Paul Standard '50s. Why give up extra real estate on the frets to have useless, string-catching nibs?

Outstanding video! I’ve owned the Epiphone SG Modern in trans black for a couple years! Absolutely love it. Looks great! Gotta have black. Love the coil tap feature. $2K for Gibson or $550 for Epi says it all!
The major drawback of SG, i found with my SG Standard, is it's lack of sustain. I'm interested in the Modern SG since it has the maple cap. It drastically helps the sustain issue.
For the SG experts. Does the 24 fret version heel joint make the neck tenon a little more sturdy than the 61' SG 22 fret? These may be old myths, wiggly necks & etc. Confused on why Gibby has different heels on each of their SG models. With my limited knowledge, I always leaned towards the SG Standard (if I was going to purchase) since it has more heel mass and a higher connection point up the neck. Is my thinking flawed?
Been looking at them also in lefty and they are discounted also in the UK and down to £1500! Love a sg and own a old standard but the new pickups and bigger frets is definitely a plus point.
Gibson is doing really well lately. I like how they moved the input jack. I don’t like that they moved the toggle switch lol. I have a Les Paul Special which is kind of on the cheaper side of Gibson. It totally blows the most expensive Epiphone out of the water though.
