I just got mine a week ago! Love it! The nut was too high. After shaving it down a couple of mm, polishing the frets & setting the action. This thing plays hella good. I have 4 Gibson SG's and I don't feel disappointed to play this. That says something. 🤘🏼😎🤘🏼
Same here, fixed my nut , polished my frets lowered the action , and this sounds way better then my Gibson les Paul Studio and Sustains way longer. pretty sad on Gibson's part as this was $770 CND and my Les Paul was $2000. Great Job Epiphone. Now waiting on my 1959 Epiphone les Paul Standard Honey Burst to be Shipped from Sweetwater Mid September.
@@hogger88 That's funny! After being so impressed with my SG, I ordered the same Les Paul with the honey burst finish. Haha. You'll be happy with your purchase. The only thing I wish is that the urethane finish wasn't so glossy. It looks soaking wet. Plays killer though!
Yup, for the price with a little touch ups and a proper set up these are great guitars. I bought a Epi LP custom a little over a year ago was surprised how well it stayed in tune. Barley needed much of a set up and has been playing great since. Swapped electronics and pickups as those are always my first upgrade out of boredom. But the stock pickups were pretty damn good. I will be ordering one of these when they come back in stock at sweetwater.

My hump day was terrible. But I'm working from home again starting tomorrow which cuts my commute down from 40 minutes to 6 feet which isn't the worst.
I bought my Daughter the "Emily the strange" Epiphone SG when she was like 10 years old. She really never hooked on to it, was too much into her art stuff, but I tell you that thing plays and sound great for the $$$, very impressed with that little guitar. Im sure this one kicks some serious Epi SG ass for the $$$. Great review as usual Hunter!
Agufish doesn't like the buckers. But, it looks like all of the pole screws are down tight. Before giving up and replacing a pickup, it's a good idea to back the pole screws out a bit and adjust height to sound taste. In my experience, a pickup can literally "bloom" when adjusting the pole screws out. Give it a try before you go through a potential swap.
The ProBuckers have almost an exact tonal profile as Burstbucker or Pearly Gates. The chief muddifier (if that's a thing) is the cover - the alloy affects eddy currents. Pole screws coming out a bit would compensate for this. Also, pickup height - lower them, raise screws.
The 2021 Epiphone modern Sg is definitely a high end Sg just look at the specs and quality of craftsmanship unfortunately they won't stay at these prices the high end price tags are coming its already started
I think the entire setup looks and sounds phenomenal, Boss Katana is killing big name amp companies with that tone not to mention that SG sounds wicked through it
I loved this video. Personally, I think the SG Modern this is the best 'modern' in the Epiphone lineup and might be their best model released this season. I was so impressed with the build quality, hardware and smooth playing of my example I purchased it! After spending a few months with this guitar, I think your review is right on target. I love the guitar but swapped out the pickups, putting a Duncan SH-5 Custom in the bridge and the Sentient in the neck. This has quickly become one of my favorite guitars and find myself playing it a lot! I love the look and tones I get it and it holds tune like a boss! BTW, I also loved the opening mix on this video! Bro, you shred on this guitar!! It was fun to see you having fun playing it -- That's what it's all about!
this epiphone sg is amazing! I own a black 2019 epiphone SG G400 in black and a 2020 epiphone SG special in sparkling burgundy. they are phenomenal guitars that make gibson run for their money!
I acquired this model a couple of months ago… I dropped a Dimarzio super distortion in the rear and a Seymour Duncan Jeff Loomis pup in the front. I had a vintage Fender style tremolo installed. I’m not a big fan of 24 fret guitars so I pulled 4 frets up to make it 21 frets. Got rid of the tone controls. Run it through a Boss super distortion, a Ibanez TS2, a EVH MXR phaser and a Delay pedal through two Marshall double stacks!!! My neighbors up the street tell me how great I sound n that I’m gonna be Famous one day mark their words. I believe them too. Ya’ll don’t need all those Marshall’s to sound as great as me… a Peavey 5150 circa 92’ will do ya just fine…
@@geroschorch1365 yes it does. The damage it can cause when stepped on really is the only thing that keeps me away from sg guitars. All front mount guitars.
Thats cool you have Boss as your sponsor on this. Im a total tube guy, but have a katana 100 mk1 head for convenience. It works well enough and passes the test! Its definitely not your 6505 tone, but gets the job done.
I got one..had it 2 years now and haven't even set it up! Have a slew of Gibson's...after seeing this I'm finally gonna get around to giving it a whirl..
I recently got the Epiphone LP Modern and that neck is friggin awesome. I really like it. The only thing on that guitar I will change is the Pickups. I just need to find a good set for a 80's Hair Band sound :) But i finally got a LP that I truly love
I agree the pickups were weak and muddy sounding and need upgrading no matter what kind of music you play. For me it would be Pearly Gates in both positions. They sound like 59 humbuckers with a little more punch and still have the 4 wire leads to use the switches. I would also change out the Grovers to Graph tech's locking ratio tuners. I put them on my SG Standard and now it does nothing but stay in tune.
I just bought this and I wont say I love it but it does play well - but if they REALLY wanted to go "modern" they would have satin neck finish instead of the HIGH gloss, that for me, does tend to get sticky after playing it a while- just have a towel with you but even then its not as good as a satin finish from the get go. Other than, its a very good guitar. Love the ebony fret board. Wont be my go to - so probably wont mess with the pickups. Great review and thank you
Just got mine 2 days ago in store. Love it! Pickups will be staying put. The store got a few SG Moderns in and they won't last too long. Fenders, Squires are selling like hit cakes though, and Gretsch too. These days if you see something you like you gotta grab it. I'm not waiting around on Gibsons anymore.
Man, they got a lot right for a great price, and since they did it would leave plenty of cash for Seymour’s or even BKP. My next one is definitely a Schecter Mach, but this would be good for my brother
A "modern" guitar without straight string pull through the nut. I haven't tried this one out to comment, but I've haven't had the best experience with the tuning stability of the g string on epiphones. Although, people would probably dislike a more modern headstock shape so idk if it will ever be fixed, but at least on the modern models it would be a nice improvement.
Could you make a video or at least explain the differences in fretboard wood? I've owned guitars where I felt the wood was holding me back when bending. There was this rough, gritty noise when playing on it. I've also owned a PRS with rosewood and a Dean with Ebony that felt so smooth and effortless to play! I agree that it doesn't affect tone, but it more importantly changes the feel. A guitars fretboard wood is now a buying decision for me.
I wish it had less of all those frustrating features and better pickups. Overall it’s a decent guitar. If I had it I probably would never mess with phase revert, I could use the split coil function but to have each individual pickup splittable plus the phase revert functionality it’s overkill. Nobody really asks for all that stuff, just give us better pickups.
I appreciate you giving the SG a try. I'm looking to replace the SG Gothic I sold years ago with either the Epiphone Modern, Prophecy or Iommi sig model. Still have some waiting to do for the SG Prophecy to come out.

LP stands for less playability
