    The horror investigation game Call of Cthulhu (2018) has a decent amount of criteria for getting the true ending. Most of them are pretty straight forward: Don't let this person die, investigate these things, etc. One criteria that stands out though is to never drink alcohol throughout your entire playthrough. One of the first actions you can take after completing the tutorial is to take a drink of whiskey from a glass on your office desk. RPing as a 20s noir detective, I locked myself out of the ending 10 minutes into the game with no explanation given as to why.

      Call of Cthulhu was a great - but too short - detective horror game. The one thing I didn’t like was that a majority of the skill tree is pretty useless, and because the game is so short, you can only max a couple of the skills by focusing on leveling them the entire game. To investigate enough of the required hidden items, you HAVE to max the Hidden Item skill(it may have been called something else) to actually find them or they don’t even appear in the world.

    Clock Tower 2 - The most diabolical part of this is that veterans of the FIRST Clock Tower game are basically guaranteed to get a bad ending because of it. In the first Clock Tower, there is also a suit of armor. Depending on which of your two friends you found first, you'll either find that it's completely worthless, OR find your other friend hidden inside of it. Seeing the latter locks you out of an ending later on. Naturally anyone who's done this before would NOT check that armor suit in the sequel.

      My stuck memory is early, so not nearly as bad as the dog, but the mail drove me crazy. There's mail right at the beginning of the game that tells you your house is going to be demolished, so if you don't check your mail soon enough you can die without realizing anything was wrong. Bad, but par for the course on this sort of game. But then on inevitable replays it's easy to skip the mail since there's a time crunch and you already know what's going on, only to then need the mail to distract a cleaning robot after you have no way back to get it (and no indication of what you need, which is again the standard with these games)

      My favorite "Oh now you're screwed" part of that game is if you let a certain character lose their (unavoidable) duel. It's very, VERY easy to lose too, because it ain't just about skill, you have to have him sufficiently leveled as well, but the game has specifically made him unavailable for a large chunk, and there are way more effective characters than him anyway. Sorry, a heroic sacrifice isn't going to help with that good ending!

  • @Dracinard
    @Dracinard 26 днів тому +148

    If I remember correctly, overlooking Decoration in Long Live The Queen can also screw you over in *the very last challenge of the game*. By the time you get to the week before coronation, there are very good odds that a foreign army has invaded and their leader, a powerful witch king, has stalked into your throne room to demand your surrender. By this point in the game though, there's a decent chance you've also unlocked your magical power and have become a powerful witch in your own right, so you might consider challenging the witch king to a magical duel for the sake of your realm. You need to have practically mastered your magic just to survive his first few attacks, but if that's all you've done... you're screwed. The witch king will overwhelm and slaughter you. How do you win, then? With the humble Decoration skill. That lets you create a field of magical lights so beautiful, so enchanting, so perfectly distracting that the witch king leaves himself open to one, final, devastating attack. And so, all those lessons in flower arranging and colour matching let you kill a king in magical combat, and survive the very last challenge of the game.

    • @1Holbytla
      @1Holbytla 26 днів тому +10

      Wow! That’s nasty! I never played that one. Lots of other Sierra games. I first learned to save often, using at least two save-slots largely I think because I unknowingly doomed myself in Kings Quesf 5 saving only one game, and by failing to rescue the mouse/rat from the cat in time (by throwing a boot at it! Meany! 🫣). You have a very brief window of time, and if you don’t intervene, the mousey isn’t there to repay your help some time later when thugs kidnap by chewing through your ropes. No way to continue the game. No real indication that this failure to act would result in a soft-lock, and hey, it’s not a super-clear right/wrong good/evil choice either: you don’t know any details to judge really well: I love animals. Both are animals. Who should live? Who should die? Why should either have to die? What is my most helpful place in this situation? My natural 1st impulse tends to lean towards the (assumed/apparent) “underdog” so I might favor saving the mouse, but hitting the cat with a boot will hurt and could even kill it, and besides that seeming cruel and excessive, with more info that could otherwise possibly be the worse choice: for example, is one of them worth more than the other? I don’t think so. So that doesn’t help. Saving the mousey means maybe the cat or it’s baby/babies starve; possibly the mouse deserved it somehow? (mostly joking, but maybe?…it killed the cat’s sister? 😂) I don’t know… Irl I’ve meddled and seen others meddle in situations I/they didn’t have enough info in and even though I/they were soooo confident, it turned out to be a definitely wrong choice/s and made things worse. Why, Sierra?! Whyyy?! Lol 😂

    The OG Zork text adventure. You had to find a bunch of treasures worth different amounts adding up to 100 points to complete the game and one them was a fabrege egg. The egg itself is one of the first treasures you find and it had another tiny treasure inside of it, that was worth a single point, but if you tried to open the egg, you irrevocably broke the treasure inside and couldn't complete the game, forever shy of a single point! The only way to open it properly was to have the thief open it for you, either by giving it to him directly or hoping he would randomly steal it from you.

    • @MegaHuntress
      @MegaHuntress 26 днів тому +13

      @@Stratelier That is indeed an optional setting the game offers you and most people use it after the first few deaths.
      That said some choices are not dependent on your skill check but on earlier choices and /or successes.
      And the game won't always tell you about that.
      For example, it is possible to not get the chocolate event at all if you befriend or "remove" the one sending them.
      But to figure out WHO that is in the first place you need clues you can only get afterward surviving it in the first place.
      You could ofc avoid it accidentally if you did the right thing without knowing the truth.
      But you won't know why unless you survive the poison attempt and investigate it afterwards.
      The game is going to regularly give you options or challenges where it is not instantly obvious what the consequences are for failing or succeeding.
      And sometimes passing a skillcheck is the worse outcome ( but thankfully that is very rare and usually quite easy to figure out when it happens )
      Deaths also only set you back a few minutes as the game is designed about dying ALOT.
      If you know what to do you can finish the game in minutes by skipping the dialogue.
      Long Live The Queen is a lovely game experience and I highly recommend it.
      But I don't believe it should have been on this list.

The light side option to assisting in this civil war is to just not do anything to help and go to a bar.

      That said, if you divide the game into light side and dark side runs, then you're missing the point that the game -- and Kreia -- is trying to tell you. The light side and dark side are both meaningless. They are both narrow ideologies that makes slaves out of people. The masters and the sith are trapped by those ideologies, you are not. Make the choices you deem necessary and become something greater than both jedi and sith, even if that also means destroying them both.
      Either way, it still doesn't exactly ruin the game. You get a few more fights with some old men who don't like you, but it doesn't really keep you from earning whatever ending you want or doing light side things for all other parts of the game.

From what I can recall watching some plays of it, any playthrough can be wrecked if you don't have the right skills at the right times, and there's so many branching paths of fail here or succeed there that without a guide there's really no way to know what skill you'll need at what level and when, so any run can be "doomed" for having a particular skill neglected potentially, and ones that don't have as many outs as that poisoning attempt I'm sure.

      Meyers is out of the picture, and she sucks, sure, but also, that leaves the NUSA suddenly without a leader. There's likely an order of succession, but I doubt an emergency transfer of power would go smoothly. And considering a lot of side quests and also the main story for Phantom Liberty point to an incoming AI invasion from beyond the Blackwall, probably not great to suddenly be leaderless right before that happens, even if said leader is very Machiavellian.
      Hansen is still in charge of Dogtown and I'm pretty sure there are no opportunities to oust him outside the main campaign. He's just as terrible and also seems to have designs on gaining control outside of Dogtown, if the fact that he's been digging up mech tanks and other such equipment is any indication.
      So Mi might STILL get nabbed by Hansen. I thought that's what happens in the main story if it plays out normally, unless she gave herself up? It's been a bit, so I don't entirely remember. If she did get held hostage by him, though, Hansen would be putting her up to the same stuff Meyers was doing. In the least, she's left without a skilled merc to help take her to the moon, which probably doesn't bode well.
      Reed probably lives out the rest of his life in Dogtown. In one ending, he seems to be considering leaving the agent life behind altogether and in the other, well, at least he's technically, "free"
      Alex is similarly stuck. One ending kills her, but another ending sees her actually leaving. Without getting pulled into the Phantom Liberty mission, she probably just wastes away inside Dogtown.

    Honestly any Sierra Title from before KQ7 would have fit the bill here, as Sierra LOOOOVEED them some "Up pn yours, Player, good luck figuring out how you screwed yourself!" My personal favorite has to be in KQ5; there just SOOOO many times you make one inocuous decision and if you somehow lucked into finishing the open area of the pre-mountain pass, you get to find out just how badly you needed that one item on a pass you didn't pay attention to about 5 hours later. My favorite example? Make sure you grab a silver coin you find by pure accident after entering and leaving a random shop in the town area, and then make sure you buy the cream pie from the baker's shop. Then, whatever you do, no matter how hard the narrator and the game tries to convince you otherwise, DO N O T eat that pie. Do so and there's a monster you need it to defeat in the mountains. I'll let you figure out how. :P

    I will never forget how one bad decision locked me out of the Thieves Guild storyline in Elder Scrolls Oblivion.
    I was just starting the game, and Oblivion was my first Elder Scrolls, so of course I was still trying things out and fooling around. I was walking around the capital when I saw some guards attacking an NPC? And they would take down the NPC, he would get knocked down for a bit and then after a while would get back up just to get attacked again. In watching this strange interaction I also found out I could rob the NPC. So I did.
    I took a lot of items from him, but the key item for the story are the Boots of Springheel Jack. These are quest items, and belong to a quest late in the Thieves Guild storyline. The problem was that there was a bug that if you stole them early they would trigger the Grey Fox to appear in Cheydinhal and he would stay there no matter what, blocking progression on the Thieves Guild questline since he's not going to be where he has to be for your first meeting with him.
    I cannot overemphasize just how early this happened. I was at the very start of my playthrough, after I got out of jail for getting arrested for stealing a horse just outside the city, when I didn't even know horses had owners assigned in-game. I knew nothing. And this bug locked me out of one of the most important storylines in the entire game.
    That bug was the whole reason I was dead set on getting a gaming PC just so I could play Skyrim on a device that would allow for the use of console commands and unofficial patches.

      @AkaiAzul First-Time Players who aren't already familiar with the SAVE system's importance to the narrative (i.e never seen/heard of it) would typically just write it off as either an accidental death or one important to the story (since the game purposely applies more damage to kill Toriel). And, though I hate to use the term, reloading a fight to spare somebody would be considered "scum-saving" (plus the game keeps track of reloads and if you've killed npcs in other playthroughs, primarily so Sans' seeming knowledge of the SAVE system can be updated per encounter.

    • @MmeCShadow

      Just to add to this, the game is pretty much built to 'force' a new player to kill Toriel if they aren't aware of the 'nobody has to due' gimmick. It takes so long to pacify her it feels like the game us actually teaching you that pacifism isn't always an option. You're expected to play through multiple times so I would hardly consider this screwing your game over in the same way as the list implies.
