SNES Fight Sticks
The golden age of fighting games was kickstarted by the release of Street Fighter II and coincided with the release of the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. Of course, this meant a bunch of companies were scrambling to release fight sticks for the SNES to capitalize on the hype of SFII. In this video, I take a look at 6 arcade sticks for the SNES and give my opinion on them.

Motion Controlled Racing And Flying Wheel for PS1 N64 - Per4mer Air Racer

Motion controllers weren't really common until the release of the Wii. There were still motion controllers released before then of course, like the NES Roll 'n Rocker, SEGA Genesis Activator, and the PS2 EyeToy. Most of these controllers tried to be either general purpose and compatible with all games, like the Roll 'n Rocker and the Activator, or focused on highly specialized games like with t...

Arcade + Flight Stick N64 Combo Controller - Mad Catz Dual Arcade Joystick

When most people think of Mad Catz, they usually think of the mediocre, cheaper alternatives to standard controllers. However, Mad Catz is also known by a small community to have made some of the best fight sticks for Street Fighter IV. Combine their arcade sticks with a standard flight joystick, and you get the Mad Catz Dual Arcade Joystick. For a console that barely had any arcade sticks nor ...
Two Pronged N64 Controllers

The Nintendo 64 controller is well known for having a signature 3-pronged design. Nowadays, there are companies like Retro Fighters and Hyperkin that make versions of the N64 controller with a modernized redesign (i.e. 2-pronged design). But, did you know there are actually a few companies that made 2-pronged N64 controllers back while the N64 was still on store shelves? In this video, I take a...

    The "PC Version" you showed with the red buttons, the first thing that came in my mind was the "neo geo", maybe the pc connector is for the "neo geo", they use also the DA-15 Connector, the other connector looks like one for the "TURBOGRAFX-16/pc engine" the small end for the "pc engine" and at the same connector the bigger end for the "TURBOGRAFX-16". Unfortunately the other 2 connectors left are too blurry to identify, maybe n64 and ps1?

    Encoder wheels are actually pretty common still. I work in an arcade and you see them in a lot of games. "Spin a wheel" type games, big bass wheel and treasure quest for example, usually use this tech to know how far the wheel was spun to know where it landed to pay out the tickets correctly. I know some controllers for the rhythm game Sound Voltex use encoder wheels for the knobs. The tech has its place- just not as a gyroscope, lol.

    • @SodaCanTablet

      Oh man I can't believe I forgot about SDVX that used to be my shit. Do you know for the Big Bass wheels how it knows the ticket values? From what I understand, the encoders can only track relative position so when the machines are shut off at the end of the day wouldn't that cause the wheel position to be lost?

    fascinating! that capcom stick seems to use a similar omron switch (with the metal fingers) to what semitsu switched their levers to a few years back, when matsushita/panasonic stopped making microswitches. in my experience with a newer semitsu ls-32, switches like those require just a teeny bit more force than the ones without the metal finger as seen in the sanwa JLF. not a major difference, and absolutely not a difference that would make one "better" at any given game, it's more like the difference between normal green tea and genmaicha: the difference is there, and noticable, but relatively inconsequential and more of a subtle matter of taste - more similar than not. (i will say that the semitsu sticks are louder when you slam it against the gate, from the amount of plastics used) i loved my ps1 padhack while i had it, it had a MUCH better input response time on computer, even with a cheap PS controller to USB converter, than the PC/PS3 board my stick came with. eventually upgraded it to a brook UFB for use on pc, switch, PS4 and 360, and then swapped the lever over to the semitsu. only other console stick i'd used before that one was the NES Advantage, the advantage (and ASCII Stick Jr.) aint the best thing ASCII made, that's for sure.

    • @SodaCanTablet
      @SodaCanTablet 4 місяці тому

      Ahhh I've only used Sanwa sticks so I didn't know Seimitsu sticks used the same switches. That's pretty cool. Maybe if I make another stick one day, I'll try it with a Seimitsu lever instead of Sanwa. And that's pretty surprising that a PS1 controller had a better response time than the OEM board loool. Do you remember what brand it was? I'm just curious because I only have experience with the HORI RAP 4 and Raspberry Pi Pico for fight sticks on PC. The ASCII Stick Jr. has such a nice design. Did it use switches or the rubber pads for the stick? I like the color scheme though. Kind of reminds me of the Namco PS1 Arcade Stick. Hope you enjoyed the video!

      @@SodaCanTablet definitely enjoyed the video!! 1: FWIW i'm pretty sure every public candy cab i've come across in the united states has been fitted out with 100% sanwa parts, and I have never been disappointed. seimitsu sticks are well designed and super overbuilt. while it may seem like they've got a bunch of them, they just have 2 body styles, and then variants of those with different springs/throw distances/shaft lengths/deadzones etc. the LS-32 and LS-40 in particular are wide and chunky over in the case, even moreso with the pcb. their sticks and buttons overall seem to feel firmer than sanwa's, but not too heavy. i've only used the new ls-32, which is still a fairly light action but feels a bit heavier than the JLF, with a shorter throw, a snappier return and smaller deadzone. as long as you get the right mounting plate your setup/build, the LS-32 is a very good all-rounder much like the JLF. their buttons are a bit firm and tactile, not heavy but unlikely to go off just resting your finger on it, more like a cherry clear than the buckling spring-heaviness of happ buttons. sanwa buttons make it less fatiguing and easy to rapid mash, and i've RARELY had one of them go off from resting. 2: it was a qanba Q1's OEM board, which was one of the least expensive sticks of its time (maybe still?? they have them on their website for 60 and in stock??). the case has held up spectacularly after having to cut away some plastic to make room for things! 3: the NES advantage/ASCII Stick Jr have the same internals with the rubber pads for everything, i remember one of the ADVANTAGES we had felt like it was starting to rip and start missing inputs a long time ago. the original ASCII Stick famicom seems to be a different beast altogether, with a nice printed metal look and arcade quality parts from seimitsu, looks just as good as the Jr.

    6:18 thats NOT amazing and how is that the same as arcade? old school sf2 80s arcade controls don't click, modern arcade eg maybe tekken 5 MIGHT use something this terrible, this is VERY bad, very clicky, and the ball moves, go look at a sf2 cabinet (or any old school arcade cabinet) all buttons are great and the joystick is one stick not a crappy short metal shaft with a giant moveable ball, you've literally RUINED what a good arcade controller is (unless you mean modern fight sticks then yes they are all this bad). The fking controller makes more noise then the game itself! p.s is it REALLY necessary to have a arcade stick on an outdated system? you do realise the snes was so slow that even tapping DOWN then FORWARD (i.e separate taps not QCF) you can STILL do a hadouken?

    • @SodaCanTablet
      @SodaCanTablet 5 місяців тому

      From your passion for SF2, hatred of modern sticks, and referring to Tekken 5 as modern despite it being basically 20 years old, I'm guessing you grew up with SF2 in the arcades and witnessed the decline of American style sticks and increasing popularity of Japanese style sticks. You probably prefer the American style sticks because of that reason. I prefer Japanese style sticks because that's what I grew up with. What makes a good arcade controller is subjective and the definition is going to be different for each person depending on what they grew up with. That's why there's still new types of controllers like the Mixbox being made for people who grew up using keyboard controls for example, and why some people still prefer Happ sticks despite most high performing stick users using Japanese levers like Sanwa or Seimitsu. Just use what works for you. 3rd gen home consoles rarely had arcade style controllers that used micro switch stick mechanisms as opposed to ones that use rubber gaskets. I thought it was amazing how this generation became a turning point for arcade style controllers using the more traditional switch mechanisms. Similar to how it was amazing when the 5th generation of consoles mostly came with analog sticks with a few exceptions. American SF2 arcade sticks do click, just not as intensely. Like I mentioned, American SF2 machines used Happ levers which are clicky because they use micro switches. So yeah, the one at 6:18 is similar to the ones in the arcades because they use the same type of mechanism. Also original Japanese SF2 cabs used the clicky Sanwa levers so in both cases, original SF2 controls did click. 1 just not as much as the other. The clickiness being very bad is subjective. Idk if you're talking about the volume or the clicking feel itself, but there are advantages and disadvantages to both. Loud clicking can give away your inputs to an opponent even if you're playing apart from each other which might help them predict your moves. However, they can also be used to fake out or distract opponents (such as when Justin Wong started to jiggle the lever really fast during Moment 37 to try to distract Daigo with the noise), and this metagame actually led to the creation of in game mechanics like the fake fireballs. Whether the pros outweigh the cons is going to depend on your playstyle and whether you like to play mindgames with your opponent or prefer a more straightforward approach to fighting. The clicking feeling is good because it gives tactile feedback when inputs are read. Without the tactile feeling, it'd be much harder to do moves. Think about playing a fighting game on an analog stick. Not really sure what you mean by the ball moves. Do you mean like it rotates in place? Or that it moves up and down the shaft? Either way, it's not the ball that rotates, it's the shaft which by the way bat top Happ sticks also do. Neither ball top nor bat top sticks move up or down during normal gameplay unless you purposely pull up on them. As for the SNES being outdated, again that's subjective and if you consider it outdated, it just sounds like you don't enjoy retro games. If it's fun, why does it matter if it's old. You do realize modern Street Fighter games also have input leniency? SFIV had notoriously lenient inputs and continued with SFV and VI. And whether the input leniency of the SNES port of SFII was by design or because of hardware limitations like you said, the end result is something that the game devs deemed did not impact the game in a negative way and implemented in future titles.

    By now somebody has already explained the CPS switch in the options, so I'm gonna ask have you looked into D-Pad options for fighters? Of course Sega has their own first party solution, but I also have all 3 verions of the Capcom Soldier Pad. While most of my findings does say it's Capcom's pad even having the logo molded onto it, some packaging of the Japanese only super famicom version says it's by Asciiware. It's a lot more comfortable than it looks.

    • @SodaCanTablet
      @SodaCanTablet 5 місяців тому

      I haven't looked too much into d-pad options for fighters, but if you have suggestions on any that's interesting I'd love to hear them. I know there are interesting ones like the SEGA Saturn controller for PS2, ASCII PAD for the Dreamcast and PS1, and the HORI 2way Fighting Commander for PS1. I don't have a Capcom pad but I really want one. I like that it combines the feel of using a standard controller for your left hand since it has a d-pad with the feel of using an arcade style controller for your right hand since your fingers are laid flat on the 6 buttons. I'm guessing the AsciiWare version is either ripping the Capcom design or maybe they had a deal at one point that AsciiWare could sell the design so that Capcom wouldn't have to do the manufacturing part.

    • @SodaCanTablet
      @SodaCanTablet 5 місяців тому

      Yeah I was confused too, but a lot of commenters brought up a good point. Fighting games let you configure the controls, so it's not TOO big of a deal if the button placements aren't optimal at the default settings since you can just tune them to your liking. Other games that don't let you configure the controls would benefit from having the button layout like L X R Y B A because the Y, B, and A buttons are very commonly used action buttons so it'd be easier to have them in a straight line. Imagine playing Mega Man and you want to jump and shoot. You just have to use the 2 buttons on the bottom left which are easy to access using your index and middle finger. If it was a layout that focused only on fighting games, the Y button would be above the B button so pressing them at the same time would be a little more challenging. I think that's really cool that the designers had the foresight to make that decision which initially seemed weird to us.

    Great look at SNES sticks. Hadn't seen some of these before! The button layout with L/R in the top-right and top left, and the SNES Advantage's weird layout is explained by one thing, I've found: The peripheral makers didn't want to simply make sticks that only work for a select few fighting games, and didn't think parents would buy them for their kids if they only worked well with that select handful of titles. With the L/R spaced on either edge, you could still get away with playing games that didn't allow button rebinding and relied on the positional aspect of those- think Mario Kart and F-Zero, for instance. Fighting games all allowed the buttons to be re-bound but a large amount of the games on the system don't have these options, so it was logical from a sales standpoint to maintain this positional layout for folks that wanted to play things besides fighters with these somewhat-expensive peripherals. Cheers

      derp mario kart is a bad example because both buttons jump/slide the same, but you get the idea- many games used positional left/right actions on L/R.

      Yeah in retrospect, I think that was the right move since like you said, it makes the controllers compatible with a wider range of games and fighting game buttons could be remapped anyways. I think a good example is Mega Man since that was also made by Capcom, and the layout makes it easier to jump and shoot with your middle and index fingers respectively. If it was in a more fight stick focused layout, the buttons would be on top of each other rather than next to each other.

    you may need to run a filter on your audio, the hum of the crt is a little bit much, even for my 30 year old ears

    I still wish I had some of these fight sticks. I'd even be fine with a USB fight stick. But I gotta save up my money and invest with care.

      @@SodaCanTablet I know it'll be a bit expensive to make my own... But I want to make my own. Making the whole thing to work with a USB port would be functional for a lot of retro games. Even just the box itself would be pricey to make. Then there's the motherboard, the buttons, stick... It's gonna be pricey.

      I made a Hitbox style controller for a friend not too long ago for PC that uses USB. I used a Raspberry Pi Pico for the logic board with the GP2040 code you can find online. I prefer the Pico to the Brooke UFB mainly because Picos are only $5. If cost is the main hurdle, I'd look into the Pico board. It's definitely a big portion of the cost down if you use that instead of UFBs. And yeah the buttons and the stick are definitely the most expensive parts. Sticks being $30 and each button being $2, it can add up quickly. But since the Pi uses a standard USB cable, you can use it with your pc and any emulators. Also for the case, you can use wood like I did, or if there's a thrift store near you, I'd recommend dropping by occasionally and seeing if they have any good boxes. My local Goodwill has small wood boxes that I think were for jewelry that would make good arcade sticks. Whatever you decide to do, good luck with it I hope it turns out well. Lmk if there's some way I can help with your build too.

      @@SodaCanTablet Thank you for the input. I have been wanting to put my Shop Class skills back into work for a custom fight stick. Though the work is gonna be a bit timely. I'll need to save up for the stick and buttons. I saw a good bundle for a stick and buttons on Amazon. The board though will be a separate expense. I plan to map the buttons and set it up to be like an SNES controller. Problem is I'll need to put the L, R, ZL, and ZR buttons appropriately. It'd have to be an 8-button style stick, and in the case of emulation, I could easily map the buttons. I just have to save up the money for the stuff on Amazon. For the art, I'm thinking of trying to get an artist to do some stuff of my favorite anime girls as something of a pinup style.
