Just switched to Logic. Nice vid for those of us who did. I wish Logic let us move the channels around in the mix view. Currently, we have to click on the "read" button to bring it into the arrangement view to move them around. That's one thing I liked about ProTools. I like to be able to group my channels into their own categories. Also, Logic... it would be nice to see through the audio regions to make precise edit points. To be able to see the ruler through the regions would be awesome
Interesting! When I want to hear something multiple times, I use the Cycle area (top part of the ruler area). Just drag a selection, then it loops endlessly - pretty simple! I guess there are many ways to do the same thing!
Yes, as I was watching this, I was thinking why is this a problem? Just loop the section like you said. I think Chris needs to watch some Logictechhelpguy videos.
Yes - the Cycle mode is especially fabulous for tracking & overdubbing parts, but I like his approach for mixing, simply assigning the start point in various ways and letting it play out to wherever you want, without being locked in a cycle.
Someone probably already commented this, but a better way to use the marquee tool is to assign it to the right click (which is in the settings > general > editing > right mouse button is assignable to a tool) Incredibly fast + let's you assign something else to the command click tool.
This is sooo helpful, and it addresses my issues. I migrated from ~20 years on SONAR, and Logic's playhead has really been frustrating. I'm headed to the studio to go try these! Thank you!
I switched to Logic after seeing how many useful tools it has more than PT. Check also the settings for zoom, super cool, and the super useful quick swipe comp, amazing tool for a songwriter.
This makes all the difference when trying to switch to logic from a more intuitive DAW. Every little dumb detail adds to the frustration and it's really hard to switch from the daw you know best
Ha, I was about to mention 'Play From Last Locate' - glad to addressed it, and yes your option is much better :) If you have the Marquee tool set as your default second tool (i.e. in the right-most Tool dropdown at the top) you can press CMD to toggle between that and the main tool. A nice advantage of this is you simply release CMD then click again to clear the selection. Thanks for the video and tips!
Sweet! thank you for these tips. I've been trying to get used to Logic and get off of Pro Tools after two decades. So I faced the same frustration with the playhead and punch. I got used to the default playhead already and dig it. However, I'm thankful you showed the play and stop to keep playhead in one spot like Pro Tools. For sure going to set that up. Sadly I was looking for the punch-in info when I came across this video and was hoping to hear how to get pre-roll to record. I really wish that capturing pre-roll during punch-in would be allowed.
You can, actually! With the Marquee Tool selected, you can use the left/right arrow keys to move between transients. The arrow keys also allow you to move between audio clip boundaries.
I like using markers as well and the marquee tool. The period and comma for fast forward and rewind. Also use the auto punch tool you need to enable it in the advance menu. There is also a third hidden tool menu. Thanks for the info very useful to know there are more hidden features.
Struggling a bit with punch, pre-roll and looping. I have a tough phrase to play on guitar. I'd like the loop to include the pre-roll with the punch only being the specified region (if that makes sense). Think loop on measures x, y & z while only punching on y & z. Is there an elegant way to do this in LPX?
-Very helpful video. Thank you! Logic Pro X is awesome, but the navigation process is very time-consuming and frustrating. 'Cycle' is effective, but it can be cumbersome to constantly set up and move cycle regions.
I notice that when playing from marquee tool there is a tiny amount of pre roll on the playhead. This is VERY frustrating and I'm trying to edit and cut to transients. So I'd like to hear where I'm playing from without this unnecessary function. Is there something I'm not seeing? Btw, I'm also moved from PT to LPX. Thanks for the videos!
But is there any way to just have it PLAY FROM THE PLAYHEAD? or ist hat something that logic literally forgot to incorporate. cuz... can't count the times that hitting play just plays some microscopic selection of marquee or something else
It does. I hated the darn playhead always moving on me. So I set it up to just stop and start where it lies. To navigate back, i normally just skip back a couple bars. I have a key command on the keys to skip ahead or back one bar. I use davinci for video editing and love how the up and down arrows navigate to the next cut point. So I mapped those keys to jump to the beginning and end of region. This speeds up editing immensely. Also love the tab to transient function to navigate.

Genius! I find the Logic interface interaction as like fighting a rubber dummy. This is SOOOOO USEFUL!!!! Thank you so much!
Or shift + click in the timeline (when the playhead is playing) and the playhead restarts wherever you want... 😄
This is amazing! Learn something everyday! 🔥🧨💪🏽🤠👍🏽🧨🔥

👆Was about to say exactly this!

Or select a region and hit U. Then your locators are set to that region.

These are absolutely great tips, and beyond the specific choices, demonstrating the mindset for attacking a project is just brilliant. Thanks!!
For me this is amazing. These are my exact frustrations going from pro tools to logic and this is perfect. Thank you!

This is one of the most helpful videos I’ve seen on punch recording in logic! Thank you so much for posting this!
I just put it in cycle mode (loop) to start at the same place.
Great video! Thanks Chris - I’m gonna make use of some of those tips.
Great stuff, all very useful man! Salutations from astonishingly windy, wet and
still sorta weirdly not back to normal Ireland! ☘️☮️🤘🏽🤠👍🏽☮️☘️
6:26 if you also want to move around the playhead quickly, you can also shift click around in your project to quickly move your playheads position

Thank you Chris, this was very helpful.

These are super handy tips! Another important one, that I suppose may be obvious: Cycles! Select region(s), type U.
Enjoyed that Chris, really well done! And I like the fact that you just sit on a simple wooden chair ☝
This is so helpful! Thanx a lot, Chris!
Did i wake up in a parallel world where Chris Liepe is the host of every youtube music channel i watch?

Thanks a lot bro! I was struggling with this.
pro tools have not stabablity right now inthe latest mac mashine, so I swith to logic, thank you for your sharing this method, save me a lot!!! :DD
Hi Chris , can you tab to transient in logic? It would be good if you could, it’s something I’m used to coming from pro tools.
You can, actually! With the Marquee Tool selected, you can use the left/right arrow keys to move between transients. The arrow keys also allow you to move between audio clip boundaries.

I am not a user of Logic (Pro Tools and Studio One) but does the DAW have the template option where it can mimic Pro Tools command automagically?
Yes but it’s not very close to pro tools because the inherent workflow is so different.
Shift click to play from selected region or shift click in timeline to move play head
Chris, what his the song you're using in the demo? I sounds great! Thanks for the tips. I have the same frustrations.
THANK YOU!

This is great
You could also press shift click and the playhead will move down there as well
I swear they changed a good bit in the last little while, completely threw me for a loop
The best way to break free from PT is to just do things the Logic way. It’s weird at first (I came from DP), but you’ll eventually get used to it.
But is there any way to just have it PLAY FROM THE PLAYHEAD? or ist hat something that logic literally forgot to incorporate. cuz... can't count the times that hitting play just plays some microscopic selection of marquee or something else

I agree with everything you've said. I am used to Pro Tools behavior, which I think is better than Logic's.
your the fucking man dawg
"You have gat to be kidding me"! Lol! 🤣 What?
This is like telling your current girlfriend to be more like your ex or you aren't going to work out lol
and I bet the fast songs are better than the slow ones ...
