Erwin thinks of himself as a con man, because he claimed he was sacrificing all the soldiers and civilians for humanity, but he was really doing it for his dream of finding out the truth. When he had to choose between his dream and humanity though, he chose humanity.
Yeah and I think this is what Floch was referring to when he said in 3x22 that "You better tell the truth so that cowards like me won't join" or something to 104th.
He actually chose his dream over humanity. This is why it was LEVI, not Erwin, who made that decision. He didn't have the strength in him to sacrifice his dreams. We see this play side-by-side with (SPOILERS) what happened with Armin in the very next episode. The strategies are the same: Both involve sacrificing yourself to catch the opponent off-guard while someone else finishes him, but Armin was actually capable of making that decision himself, to the point of lying to Eren in the process. He was able to sacrifice his dreams and himself for the sake of humanity, touching the theme established in season 1 of those who can't sacrifice anything not being able to do anything. And as if to symbolically show the difference in their resolve: Armin's plans pay off, they do catch Bert, while Erwin's fail as Zeke is taken away by Pieck. This is ultimately the reason why Armin was chosen over Erwin, even if Isayama later decided to kill his character so he would fit the avengers ending.

Time for Japanese lesson 0:50 "Eren no yieh gahhh!" means "Eren's house!" and sounds like Eren's name " Eren Yeager". Aot author Isayama often does this kind of joke even during the serious situation. When Erwin and Levi talked about the basement, Erwin called himself "Ore" means "I". He usually uses a word "Watashi" which also means "I" but formal. "Ore" is pretty casual and used when people talk with their close friends or family.
Erwin is probably the most stoic character ever and this is the first time he showed some kind of vulnerability in his character.. that makes him my favorite

What Floch was talking about reminds me of a story about "White Rose" during World War II. There is this scene in which the girl involved in the activity was sent to a small room and executed there without being known until after the war. She was brave but she must be filled with fear. Clearly very few people were "lucky" enough to die a heroic death, and the people in power definitely don't want to give those heroes(heroines) any chance to do that.
This is note what the “White rose” was. It was a news outlet in pre-nazi Germany that covered the psychological changes of the German people and resisted the nazis until persecution. So in a way it perfectly describes that, as any death in battle is honorable.
Floch Forester is an analogy for the "Children of the Forest" aka those who are trapped in a fight or flight survival mentality. SPOILERS: It's why Floch & Gabi are so violent later. Both Children of the Forest.
I love this episode, because not only the end is one of the most epic and inspiring scenes I have seen in anything, but it is a great end to Erwin's arc. Throughout the third season we learned that even though he obviously cared for his men and the future of humanity, he had an ulterior motive from the beginning, and because of that he felt like a conman, like a liar, because he was convincing people to fight and give their lives in order to pursue that dream. That scene where he is standing on a mountain of the bodies of his soldiers describes perfectly how he felt about it. But at the end, when he had to choose between achieving his dream (giving up the fight, looking for the basement on his own and learning the truth himself), or honoring all the sacrifices of his men by continuing the fight til the end for the sake of humanity, he chose to sacrifice the thing he cared most about, the thing that had always motivated him to keep living and fighting. He also told the truth to his men about what was about to happen, that they were going to die, and that the world is cruel and death does make many things that are important to us meaningless, he acknowledged to the recruits that given they were all going to die, they all had a choice, they could choose to give up, but that ultimately he chose to give meaning to the sacrifice of the people who fought and died before him. He, like all the new recruits, was afraid, but he chose to believe that his own sacrifice will be meaningful as well. (also worth mentioning that the voice acting is unreal in that scene, when they are riding to their deaths and he is saying that sacrifice is the only way to rebel against this cruel world and his voice cracks)
And this is why Erwin will always be the #1 leader in fiction. I have never seen or read any leader that inspired me as an outside observer to put my life down for them like this man did. Every step that he has taken is done with no regrets. From catching the female titan to ordering his soldiers to advance while being carried off in the mouth of a titan, to this event. Erwin will always be "The MAN!"
Just in case you two are not familiar with the term, a "Perfect Game" is a baseball term for winning a game without allowing a single baserunner to reach first base.

0:54 for anyone confused at connie's joke, this is a japanese pun that literally cannot be translated to english the same way: connie here is referring to eren's house which is called 'ie' in japanese, followed by the object marker particle 'ga'. particles are used in japanese as a way to indicate where the subject, object, direction, time, verb, location, or posession is. it would make sense if you knew japanese. the japanese language follows a subject object verb sentence pattern (unlike english which is subject verb object) so to break down connies sentence, it reads as follows: eren no ie ga ochiteiru, where 'eren' is the subject; 'no' is the particle indicating posession; 'ie' is the object house; 'ga' is the object marking particle; 'ochiteiru' is the present continuous form of the verb 'to fall'. notice how connie doesn't actually say 'ochiteiru' in his line. this is because japanese people sometimes tend to omit verbs that don't need to be said because it's very obvious. if i said 'watashi wa keeki wo', that literally means 'i ___ cake', where i've omitted the verb. because, well, i aint gonna drink the cake or anything, its obvious im gonna eat it, so i ommited the verb 'taberu'. the full sentence would be 'watashi wa keeki wo taberu'. likewise, connie here ommited the verb to fall 'ochiteiru'. however, here's the actual joke bit: when he ommited the verb, he was left with 'eren no ie ga', and if you say this sentence back to yourself in japanese, the 'ie ga' (meaning house) sounds very similar to eren's last name jaeger. this is why connie was laughing when he yelled EREN NO IE GAAAA as if he's saying EREN JAEGERRRR and so yeh thats bassically it i found it pretty funny thanks guys hope you enjoyed this commentary make sure you like subscribe and comment down below youre welcome guys ill see you in the next one see ya *cue outro*
I love how every reaction series never really understands the implication of the Beast Titan using the words "Perfect Game" while pitching rocks, but so many acknowledge it like they just did saying it's just a game to him. Such a small detail that goes over the heads of pretty much everyone until it's finally revealed in Season 4 why. Gotta love that type of stuff in this series.
I love this episode a lot, not just because of Erwin, but also the little detail about the "perfect game" like, why does the beast titan know how to play baseball?
Waiting a week for each of these, and then waiting even longer at the mid season finale, was just so excruciating. Its so refreshing to see you guys have stayed away from spoils, hopefully, and just know at this point its only getting started 0.0' Love your guys' reactions
12:17 "Why is the Beast Titan pitching?" Man, you were picking up on it so early, but not noticing the nuance of the question! Hahaha. Baseball doesn't exist within the walls as far as we know, and there don't seem to be enough titan shifters for large team sports like baseball to be played, so it was a good question. Loved the reactions, as usual.
I love your insight girls. Erwin struggled with the guilt of his burden of leadership. He knew he was right. He knew he was benefitting humanity but he also knew that he did it all for a very selfish reason. To have people die for a selfish cause starts to eat at you no matter how noble the cause. And in his final moments he faced that guilt and expressed his feelings about himself. It's a funny thing this cruel beautiful world we live in, because as Erwin faced demons his beauty truly showed. He led his men into battle on the truth. The truth that you trust your fellow man will push forward in your memory as you lay your life for something bigger. The one true way humanity can rebel against the cruelty of the world. Tears every time.
This and the next few episodes gotta be the best ever in anime. I'm so jealous they get to watch the next one right away. Waiting a week for the next episode was torture back then lol
erwin's point about needing a con-man meant that in order to make the recruits do the charge on their own (without erwin), it would require many lies and being a con man. But because he isnt a con-man, he had to participate in the charge himself and lead it because only then will the recruits follow him.
Nope it started mid season 2 and continued till the starting of season 4 and they gone downhill..season 3 was the GOAT.. Erwin..armin..Kenny and levi all got their best writings there.
The irony is that Erwin considered his speech as a whole slew of lies though it is inspiring. I think that the speech was phenomenal but I can't imagine how Erwin felt when giving speech.
Well damn, ive watched this scene over and over again but never thought about Erwin’s face being scared or he was being scared but when i paused he is actually scared but really determined. Good observation.
Levi ordered Erwin to give up on his dream and die for them, because Erwin didn't want to make that decision, he just saw that basement, he didn't want to give up on the sole thing that kept him going no matter how many times he thought dying would be easier, in that final moment, he didn't want to die afterall, he wanted to reach that basement, that truth his father talk about. Levi making the decision for him... the sad look on Erwin's face that turned into reliefed yet sad smile that he won't get to see it afterall is easly not only one of the most iconic scenes in the series, but easly one of the best in anime history!
4:54 I love how they forgot that Eren’s titan is 15 meters while Bertholdt’s one is 60 meters, meaning Eren should be a quarter of the colossal titan’s size, yet that’s totally not the case here 😂

Dude, no matter how much i watch Erwin's speech, it never fails to make me cry or being an edge to my seat
The start of a great week of attack on titan reactions
Erwin's speech is still one of my favorite scenes in this entire show
3 best eps of this season , let's go
The whole show*
I love how this episode shows us that you must make every moment count. The future is a fantasy that we may never get to.
I have never wanted the wait between episodes so little lol. I need that next episode ASAP ://///// I began tearing up with you all at the end
one of the monumental speech in anime history,
Shinzooooooo sasageyooooo!!!!!!!!! into deathhhhhhh!!!!!
I can say I believe I´m not crying... maybe... omg what an incredible speech...
This was a representation of the Kamikaze attacks carried out by the Japanese in World War II.
I love this episode a lot, not just because of Erwin, but also the little detail about the "perfect game" like, why does the beast titan know how to play baseball?
9:39 the moment we see erwin the titan of steel balls😢😢
This episode is just ...... the things I always feel on this
This week we eating good 🗣
The beginning of the 5 best episodes ever made in history ! Nobody was ready 🤯🤩
one of the Greatest speech In anime history..
Erin's speech is so amazing....... chills ....... I love this show
I love your insight girls.
Actually Haylo, bravery is doing something without fear and courage is about overcoming your fear.
That first throw... with the sound effects and music. Chilling.
Best speech in anime history. 🙏
Rip to my favorite leader in fiction man what a episode what a scene forever goated
エレンの家が〜(イェーガー)で正気を失っていたのはコニーではなく、シュールなギャグとしてしょうもないダジャレを差し込む諫山先生の方だ(日本語が判らない海外勢の99%はここで困惑する) 0:50
9:57 Nani?! I'm very happy to hear your Japanese for the first time! Thank you! From one Japanese person.
erwin's point about needing a con-man meant that in order to make the recruits do the charge on their own (without erwin), it would require many lies and being a con man. But because he isnt a con-man, he had to participate in the charge himself and lead it because only then will the recruits follow him.
These episodes and this battle is still in my top 3 favorite moments of AoT.
Erwin always thought that he did all of this for his dream, but at the end he gave up on his dream for humanity.
I think this was the most shocked I’ve ever seen you two. And I don’t blame you🤧
And it’s just getting started
My heart breaks with the death of all the fallen 💔💔💔
This is one of the most heartbreaking chapters 😭😭😭
Light a oublié qu'il a déjà utilisé son carnet mais ça va lui revenir ;)
Waited so long for this ep finally
the greatest arc in AOT has just started
Nope it started mid season 2 and continued till the starting of season 4 and they gone downhill..season 3 was the GOAT.. Erwin..armin..Kenny and levi all got their best writings there.
I just love the Reiner reveal. Everyone thinks we're in deep shit, but then it gets even worse, again. Brilliant.
The irony is that Erwin considered his speech as a whole slew of lies though it is inspiring. I think that the speech was phenomenal but I can't imagine how Erwin felt when giving speech.
True is that since ep 1 we've been waiting for this episode and the next
peak fiction is when the story drove into "just how they gonna get out of this?" situation
Oh here we go, my third personal favorite AoT episode ever.
Floche is such an interesting character they introduced to the series 😅
I could literally bench a truck listening to Erwin’s speech
Getting home after work, have some food and watch your reactions, simply... amazing plan! :D
Here it is! THAT episode with THAT speech!
6:59 Kiss: "You can't have that attitude!" (To Floch)
LISTEN, FLOCH! LISTEN!" 😡
4:54 I love how they forgot that Eren’s titan is 15 meters while Bertholdt’s one is 60 meters, meaning Eren should be a quarter of the colossal titan’s size, yet that’s totally not the case here 😂
Greatest episode in the history of TV.
I implore you to go back and watch Erwin’s speech in this episode in English as well. It’s so good. His voice actor in English is J Tatum who also voices Okabe in Steins;gate
9:56 you know SHt just got real, when hayley herself says "NINAAA??" 😂
literally been waiting patiently for this since you guys started watching
PEAK moments!!!! I love it! The reactions are always priceless!
the fact that i got spoiled and still cried at his death
“I guess we keep watching” that’s what this show will do to a person
Kiss random happy sounds before video indicate not ready for these coming episodes 😂
