I'd say he is not really a better fighter than Annie. He is a better soldier. Teamwork, following orders are qualities that are important in that ranking. Combat prowess? Mikasa and Annie easly the top 2. Overall ranking? What we saw in s1 ranking. But Bert is very skilled nontheless
Berthold already showed that he can keep up with Mikasa at the End of Season 2 when he was not only evading Mikasa but in a way that she was caught and injured by a pure Titan and had to be saved by Jean. He might be a timid guy which why people keep getting surprised that he is actually really talented and freaking dangerous.

Berthold finished 3rd in the class after Mikasa and Reiner, and his only real weakness always was just indecisiveness. Other than that, he is extremely skilled soldier.
Ironic that as a person he lack initiative but as a titan, he jump starts our heroes journey

@@AzetarisWhat makes you think it was for fun? She intimidated the squad leader into running away and leaving himself wide open to be punted. As shown when the moment he ran, she flung the other (very dead) dude away and did exactly that.
@@Azetaris From my pov, if Annie despised killing people but knew that she'll have to mass murder in a very near future, she could have tried to distance her emotions from the soldiers, even if it's hurting her deep inside. It's AOT, characters deal with complex situations that provoke mixed emotions.

Remember in season one when Annie was staring at Marco saying "I'm Sorry"?
that wasnt marcos body. it was in a completely different location and posititon. the full body was shown in the manga and its feminine and it wasnt eaten in half. i could tell you who the body was and why annie was saying apologizing to her but thats a whole other different rant
I actually did not realize how much the speach of berthold actually references the Atom Bomb and Nuking of Japan. They are not devils, but they stil have to die. There was no chance to negotiate etc. Became very apparent after watching Oppenheimer

Bertholdt was always very talented (heaps of natural talent) as Sadies said but he was too mild mannered. Meaning he was always hindered by his lack of confidence by following Reiner the whole time and not thinking or doing things himself. But he was the most talented of the 3 of them (Reiner, Annie, and Bertholdt) which is probably why he is the Colossal Titan

We've been there!! This show really mess with your emotion and rationality to the point it makes you questioning yourself 🤣🤣
That depends if you are easily swayed or not, everyone who's not will not question themselves even after discovering rest of the plot. But some people just need a one, five second sad scene of evil character to start feeling for them, which is pathetic tbh.

This show got me mixed feelings but not there. At that point I can pitty Reiner/Berthold but I can't root for them.

Reiner compartmentalizes to deal with the guilt of his actions, effectively creating two lives/personalities for himself. Bertholdt was previously stoic as to not get too close, but it got to him eventually. Here he removes his conscience and most emotions--he killed part of himself to move forward. Tragic, really. :(

Ahhhh! I love this episode for Bertholdt's confidence.
See that comment section? Marco figured out the plot of the next 2 seasons in advance, and yet after being gently convinced by his comrades, he decided not to tell anybody about it. Be like Marco. Don't spoil AoT newcomers.
Them having empathy towards Reiner and Bert at this point is a sign of great viewership and understanding of the characters- specially at this point where they are yet to learn their backstories
If you watch it a second time you can see all the hints. Like Annie apologized to Marco after he was dead. It all makes sense.

Yeah, there's a detail that only rewatchers might notice. She was literally looking at him dead and saying sorry in the first episodes.

Gonna mention this just because VERY FEW ppl catch on this. The situational dynamic of Armin negotiating with Wellman to not kill eren after he transformed, Marco with Reiner Bertold and Annie and lastly Armin with Bertold is a pattern repeated for a reason and key to keep in mind and present moving forward up to the very end of the series to understand it. Just wanted to leave this here because most ppl do not catch this.

REALLY hoping you guys ARE listening to the opening intros, it’s absolutely wild and bizarre not to be. Even with the risk of someeeee spoilers. Dont cut yourself short, listen to those intros as they kick in
I wish coffee gave ME that sort of confidence! 😆 But seriously, I think Bert's resolve simply came from being around Reiner and especially Zeke over the last couple of months, both of them probably berating him for his lack of resolve and talking up the importance and stakes of this mission. He's had a lot of time for self-reflection, and he hasn't been surrounded by his victims. This is his character arc 🙂 And his fighting skill comes from being a Titan and being top 3 in his class.

Tiny symbolic detail youve mightve missed, in season one they find marco death litterally bitten in half. Which you see how it happend in this episode which was the catalyst for Reiners Psyche to split in half.

"Why they all have to die" I really love watching them and few other reactions, the show is doing too good job of driving story and showing how little you know just to slander you later with wall of mixed emotions after you are facing deep and conflicting truth
I am at 4*15 and I am still waiting to get the conflicting truth about it.

i LOVE your guys reactions to AOT. takes me back to when i began my journey with AOT. what i’d give to be able to watch it again for my first time.
I wouldn't say Bertolt beat Mikasa, he just managed to avoid being killed by her surprise attack because he was expecting it. So he could hold her for a second. But he had to run away very quickly because he knows he can't stop her for long.

Marco’s loss is huge. He was so smart and would’ve been a leader in the scouts like Armin and Jean. 😢

If I remember we'll, the top 5 trainees were in this order: Mikasa, Reiner, Bert, Annie, Eren. But everyone forgets that Bert was top3 because he's been so quiet and didn't get much screen time. I believe he was so quiet because of his guilt, and he got his confidence back when he "reunited" with their "leader" (question mark) so he remembered their purpose again
As far as experts can tell, the root cause of split personality disorder has to do with trauma, and somebody being so unable to deal with whats happening that their mind fractures, in order to prevent your body from going into extreme shock. Its a very sad condition. They did it very well in this show.

BERTHOLDT is really an underrated character. he's one of the tragic characters out there
Bert is a great teammate and excellent at following orders. That's why he is the Colossal. Every general wants this. Annie was the better fighter, but not a good soldier. Every general tries to put up with this.

She looked down at him and said sorry and Reiner told her something to the effect that now is not the time to be remorseful.
Back then it didn’t seem as significant but now that you watched that clip it puts that scene into context
