Not really comparable. Emps could have easily co-opted the Imperial Cult into serving his purposes, the Ethereal cant do anything like that with Tau'Va worship... in fact no matter what they do Tau'Va worship WILL doom them.

Another thing to mention is that Tau are shorter lived than humans (Farsight felt "old" in his 50's and was having age related health issues prior to being revitalized by the Dawn Blade) so humans within the T'au Empire could start having an effect on their society simply because they can live long enough to carry the message of "The Greater Good" in-between the generations of Tau and slowly turn it into a more faith based practice. Also besides Suretrike, the Ethereals have one other card to play. Kais - the 3rd student of Puretide and Master of the Lone Hunter. Tho he might be the one to actually kick off the schism of the T'au because the last I heard about Kais in any lore is that he is slightly unhinged because unlike Shadowsun, he's been fully conscious during his tint in cryo-stasis and it may have driven him MAD. and without a schemer like Aun'Va at the reins i'm pretty sure it won't take much for Kais to jump the shark and make himself EVERYBODY'S problem.

The big difference between them is that when Horus learned of Chaos, he immediately shattered the empire he helped create. Farsight on the other hand chose exile, his line of thought being more like Malcador's in that the people cannot handle the truth of Chaos. (Plus Farsight saw a vision of his ultimate victory and it was horrifying.)
What happened? Dark Angels are good at keeping secrets, so they might be the only human force that could work with the Tau, perhaps. Id like to hear what happened though.
A radical inquisitor might think that instead of trying to retake human worlds it might be better to simply get them to become a bigger % of the Tau Empire's population, then rebel, and whoever wins the civil war, the Empire of Man just mops up the survivors.
The Tau are speedrunning to their own old night, much like the Human federation at the end the golden age of tech, into dark age of tech and then the rise of their own imperium is record time.
They were pretty twisted with the Tau and were put in check but not fully beaten as of recent fluff. They are still pissed after Gulliman beat down Morty with Emperor Mod Cheats activated and driving them out of the Ultramar system.
The death guard beat the Tau, the only reason they didn’t invade the tau empire proper is because of there new warp god thing not allowing them to cross the statuses nexus, the tau defences were smashed and they lost. Also death guard fight the tau in the novel fire warrior and I don’t think the tau do too great there either
A good character that could be reintroduced for that plot would be Aun'Shi. He is an ethereal who showcased proficiency in melee combat, which Tau usually scorn upon. That way, we would have an Ethereal point of view, his controversial style being a good way to tease either reforms from within the Ethereal Caste or to accentuate the schism.
Although there is the plotline of him likely being an ai replacement after he might have died. If it's true and gets found out, it will instead fan the flames of civil war.
Its also very likely that the tau will experience their own version of the horus heresy if one of their prominent leader figures fall to chaos. Farsight was very close
I'll be real personally I have never liked the farsight falling to chaos in my mind it never made sense for Khorne to keep trying again and again Khornes always been a bit of a one time offer kind of dude Khorne also wouldn't like farsight for philosophical ideology in the first place as farsights Battlesuit uses a sword but not the man himself so why would khorne be interested in him :/ like it makes no sense farsight without his suit is physically weak and therefore khorne wouldn't like the man like I just never liked the theory and I don't like how Gdubs dangles it around like a possibility

At the end of the day, khorne is a malevolent chaos god that wants to spread his corrupting influence, and if you do display violent tendencies and frequently use chaos artifacts like Farsight, he won't pass up an opportunity to get his hooks in you. I didn't understand why khorne would want to bring someone like Rogal Dorn under his sway either, but evidently he at least gave it a shot nonetheless during the closing hours of the horus heresy.

I like this take on it, it would make for an interesting story. I've always wanted to build a tau auxiliary army based around this idea with converted human fire warriors and customised battle suits that have a "familiar but not quite right" look to them, sort of similar vibe to the legion of the damned. However. I don't see GW taking this route, we all know that no xenos faction may be permitted to take the attention away from the golden child faction - the space marines. At least, not for long. Also. extra thick 6 armed goddess must be researched... for.... the greater good?
Maybe we could get a few upgrade sprues for Guard instead of full releases. They’d need to rerelease the Guard model to be compatible with upgrade sprues, but that could be good. Pulse rifle, Tau helms, and backpacks. That way we could also get a bunch of other side regiment upgrades for minimal investment on GW’s part.
After watching I’m actually convinced that the tau are going to have their own sudden explosion of psykers just like humanity during the dark age of technology

I kind of like the idea that Farsight would side the the religious faction because T'au'va helps him be safe from Khorne, but for this exact reason refuses to give them any active political support, because he knows very well how this would snowball.
Not gonna lie. If that is the canon look of the Goddess... If we can spread it, we can make a religion out of this. Also the Tau breaking apart could create unique models on tabletop. Meaning more models to sell, meaning more $$$ for GW.
Honestly, with the talk of young Tau adopting human culture I’m quite surprised there’s not ONE or at least a few Young Ethereals who would be converted to the Tau Faith or learn more of human culture. I mean the solution for their problem is there. Let young Ethereals become a Priest like figure who claims to talks to Tau’va. Basically just become the Tau pope or something. It means the Ethereals remain in power as a “pope” like figure while tau faith reigns. I’m not sure if this is a viable solution, I just thought about it as soon I heard of young Tau taking up human culture stuff.

The best option for the Ethereals would be to co-opt the nascent religion while they still have the chance and use it to mold the empire and win converts from Imperium-held territory.
i actually really like the idea of farsight being in a position of power in any religious and political civil war, because he would go from very small faction with no power, to all of sudden being the deciding factor in what happens for the tau i think you should have brought up how nurgle or other chaos factors could play a part in the religious civil war, because even if few humans/tau worship chaos, i doubt the chaos gods will look kindly to another deity being against them in the warp
So a few human auxiliaries too invested in tau philosophy can manifest a new god, meanwhile big E gets 10000 years of worship and sacrafices and he still chillin... he better make this good
Big E is a God now though, he was powerful enough to burn Nurgle's garden and Guilliman described he was "talking to a star". Pretty sure he just keeps himself on that throne because the Imperium needs it to navigate the Warp and unless he wants to fight all the 4 Chaos Gods at once, he's not gonna try taking a place in the warp himself.
E outclasses Tau god by huge margin. He is basically keeping rip in warpgate closed with one hand, lighthing the Astronomicon with other and using one leg to kick and keep chaos gods at bay. Strongest feat of Tau va we have seen is messing with few Death Guard spaceships.
Honestly it would be really cool if the Tau goddess and star child become the catalyst for the imperium and Shadowsun Tau to join up as a alliance kinda like the Inari makeing it a faction of order to protect and bounce off another in a few books

Honestly, a cool idea would be Farsight coming in to more or less clonk the Skulls of the two sides of the religious war and basically go: "I know you're having a nice little holy war, but there are some VERY BIG BUGS over there and they would enjoy nothing more than feasting on our entrails."
Ngl this would be a great addition to the lore, getting into the nitty and gritty of social life in the Tau Empire with social unity and division with the emerge of believers and athiest remainers

100% agree because of the fact that the milky way galaxy is so vast and big. You would think that there would other humans that aren't related to the imperium at all would show up by now that aren't leagues of votann.
One of the worst things i heard when reading about the lore and fans...is how ppl got angry that there is a "good guy" faction... even tho they have glaring defaults already. There has to be some good guys for the bad to make sense. The empire has the white scars and the salamnders for a reason. The necons have many nice dynasties and the silent king the big boss is actually friendly to other races. The TAU are that for the macro scale of the warhammer universe. Warhammer lore nerds want it to be too grim derp at the expense of a good story. Maybe i am in the minority here.
I like the tau more when they arent imperium at home. A little brigth candle in a room shed a little light, but also makes everything seem darker once you stop looking at it, otherwise your eyes grow used to the dark.
Tau fans generally like it when the Tau Empire are relatively nice and diplomatic. They're an empire of many, many different xeno races. They need to be nice to their Auxillary allies else they risk facing rebellions from them. The Tau have had darkness since their inception, but that's never been good enough for some Imperium fans. For some reason GW tries to appeal to them and changes Tau lore. GW should write factions for the fans of those factions. Imperium roleplayers don't change their minds and like Tau because GW make them grimderp.
There is such an obvious solution to this for them, become the prophets for tau'va, the same way they have done so for the greater good, tau'va is the manifestation of the greater good, and the ethereals are the guides of the greater good, ala they are the guides for those who follow the tauva. Religion normally births idealogy, here it is just idealogy has birthed religion, and if you're the paragon of one you can easily become seen as the paragon of the other.

I've always wondered if the Tau are aware of Blanks? Given the Tau's small presence in the warp, would they think they're regular humans and behave normally around them? Unlike normal humans who detest them? If that's the case, they might have an anti-psyker army one day
I kind of feal like whats going to happen is that the area of the startide nexus by that i mean on the other side of it. Will become a separate state of the Tau Empire basically the Tau Empire will be Ethereal loyalist and the Space on the otherside of the startide nexus will be Tau'va Believers.

The Tau seem to have the most compelling plotlines and I think thats in part to how small it is in scale. Not everything has galaxy reach consequences at stake which actually makes coflicts like a schism more exciting

I see this possible, it would be a cunning move from Tzeench to do that, it would also explain the lack of mentions about chaos cults in the Tau Empire. Tzeench followers would try to spread the myth of the greater good to their fellow humans.
It's really interesting to see the Tau go through phases of history the other factions already have. You hear bits and pieces of older empires histories from thousands or millions of years ago, but now get to see it happen in real time with the new guys

before i learnd about this i really hated the tau because the felt like the mary sues of the setting, they were always like "you may outnumber us 1000000 to one and you may have thousands of years of experience, but i have cool technology" out of every sticky situation wich just left a bad taste in my mouth. Now im super invested becasue they are struggling so badly.
It is a great point about the population there, and it works exactly the same way in reality. If a population gets more wealth and education, their birthrates drop, minority or not. And if tau fail to deliver that wealth, that will be a problem more than one way.

The imperium was large enough before the schism. Meaning at the end of it there was enough left overs to make the imperium functional. The Tau are small, having a schism will make them even smaller. They better stop grabbing imperium property if they want an alliance
I think it’s safe to assume the ethereals might invest into a secret police of sorts in the future. Or at least thats what a warhammer writer should consider including in a future novel.
The funny thing is that for Tau Empire to continue to rapidly expand and become strong they would need to accept the faith, however, would that still be "Tau" Empire and not just a rival Empire to the Imperium? On the other hand, Tau Empire can become a Tau Reich - their expansion would become so slow they are likely to become non-threat to Imperium even if now the rule of Ethereals would be cemented. Imo it's a conflict of an empire and ethnostate - empire cannot be nationalistic as it either has to embrace multiculturalism or assimilate everyone into their singular group, so, basically what the US. Meanwhile if an empire decides to become an ethnostate it just dies, even if after millions of murdered civilians, so, what Ottoman Empire did by trying to remove everyone non-Turkish Muslim. And everyone knows what is a thing today - the US or the Ottomans
I think that having the Ethereals worshiping the T'au goddess to be perfect. If one of their highest ranking generals is a true believer, I can't imagine a small sect of the the Ethereal class aren't either. Perhaps that was why Shadowstrike was kicked out of that meeting...
The Tau have imo the most promise for cool factions and lore both on the tabletop and beyond. Youve got Tau purists who are afraid of auxilliaries causing warp gods. Your classic balanced Tau force. The Tau'va followers who keep more auxiliaries than ever and have faith as a core element. Farsight with his mechs, heroes and melee combat. And then the possibility of direct ethereal based nonsense. The existance of Tau chaos shrines is an interesting thing when korne has been trying to get a hold on Farsight. Chaos amped tau and auxilliaries would be a sight to see, especially since if they can bring a tau version of a chaos god into reality, they could likely do the same for avatars of the chaos gods in the tau image.
I could honestly see the Tau Empire having something similar to the Battletech Terran Alliance’s demarcation declaration occur as information seem to takes an incredibly long time to reach T’au from their outlying worlds, making them incredibly hard for the higher up ethereals to successfully govern let alone defend.

tbf to Emps, according to books talking about how the Big E and Terra are perceived in the warp, he's basically eternally under watch by all 4 major Chaos Gods, and struggling to hold together the fragments of his soul and the thousands or millions of subcomponent aspects while keeping the Astronomicon lit. Plus, he was (ostensibly) a literal human being at one point, and one who detested the idea of Gods, so it's probably a bit harder for him to function as one while maintaining whatever is left of his human identity. Unlike Mommy Tau'va, who was seemingly woven wholecloth from the warp and has been so unnoticed by the powers in the warp that the deathguard commander literally couldn't believe that she existed until she gave his ship the ol' dick twist and crumpled it out of existence
I have mixed feelings on the Tau goddess, since I find it a little baffling that a relatively small population in a relatively small corner of the galaxy have fuelled a deity with such power already. Like, the Tau god seems to have more independent power than Ynnead. And for all of the psychic strength of the Aeldari they haven't been able to refuel any divine stuff whatsoever.
The t'au have more than a thousand planets and some of their auxiliaries are very psychic. the Aeldari may be very psychic but are convinced of their own down which makes it happen.
I think some of it is the fact that her domain keeps her safe, despite her adolescent state. Her domain is like a tunnel between the two entrances of the Startide Nexus and seems to keep her safe in the same way that the Webway keeps Cegorach safe from Slaanesh.

This is honestly making me more interested in the Tau. I knew Farsight was cool but this religious schism seems really interesting.
The Tau are speedrunning to their own old night, much like the Human federation at the end the golden age of tech, into dark age of tech and then the rise of their own imperium is record time.

They were pretty twisted with the Tau and were put in check but not fully beaten as of recent fluff. They are still pissed after Gulliman beat down Morty with Emperor Mod Cheats activated and driving them out of the Ultramar system.
The death guard beat the Tau, the only reason they didn’t invade the tau empire proper is because of there new warp god thing not allowing them to cross the statuses nexus, the tau defences were smashed and they lost.
Also death guard fight the tau in the novel fire warrior and I don’t think the tau do too great there either

A good character that could be reintroduced for that plot would be Aun'Shi.
He is an ethereal who showcased proficiency in melee combat, which Tau usually scorn upon. That way, we would have an Ethereal point of view, his controversial style being a good way to tease either reforms from within the Ethereal Caste or to accentuate the schism.
Although there is the plotline of him likely being an ai replacement after he might have died. If it's true and gets found out, it will instead fan the flames of civil war.

At the end of the day, khorne is a malevolent chaos god that wants to spread his corrupting influence, and if you do display violent tendencies and frequently use chaos artifacts like Farsight, he won't pass up an opportunity to get his hooks in you.
I didn't understand why khorne would want to bring someone like Rogal Dorn under his sway either, but evidently he at least gave it a shot nonetheless during the closing hours of the horus heresy.

I like this take on it, it would make for an interesting story. I've always wanted to build a tau auxiliary army based around this idea with converted human fire warriors and customised battle suits that have a "familiar but not quite right" look to them, sort of similar vibe to the legion of the damned.
However.
I don't see GW taking this route, we all know that no xenos faction may be permitted to take the attention away from the golden child faction - the space marines. At least, not for long.
Also. extra thick 6 armed goddess must be researched... for.... the greater good?
Maybe we could get a few upgrade sprues for Guard instead of full releases. They’d need to rerelease the Guard model to be compatible with upgrade sprues, but that could be good. Pulse rifle, Tau helms, and backpacks. That way we could also get a bunch of other side regiment upgrades for minimal investment on GW’s part.
After watching I’m actually convinced that the tau are going to have their own sudden explosion of psykers just like humanity during the dark age of technology

I kind of like the idea that Farsight would side the the religious faction because T'au'va helps him be safe from Khorne, but for this exact reason refuses to give them any active political support, because he knows very well how this would snowball.

Honestly, with the talk of young Tau adopting human culture I’m quite surprised there’s not ONE or at least a few Young Ethereals who would be converted to the Tau Faith or learn more of human culture. I mean the solution for their problem is there. Let young Ethereals become a Priest like figure who claims to talks to Tau’va. Basically just become the Tau pope or something. It means the Ethereals remain in power as a “pope” like figure while tau faith reigns.
I’m not sure if this is a viable solution, I just thought about it as soon I heard of young Tau taking up human culture stuff.
One problem with that: what if the tau godess doesn't like the ethereals?

The best option for the Ethereals would be to co-opt the nascent religion while they still have the chance and use it to mold the empire and win converts from Imperium-held territory.

i actually really like the idea of farsight being in a position of power in any religious and political civil war, because he would go from very small faction with no power, to all of sudden being the deciding factor in what happens for the tau
i think you should have brought up how nurgle or other chaos factors could play a part in the religious civil war, because even if few humans/tau worship chaos, i doubt the chaos gods will look kindly to another deity being against them in the warp
So a few human auxiliaries too invested in tau philosophy can manifest a new god, meanwhile big E gets 10000 years of worship and sacrafices and he still chillin... he better make this good
Big E is a God now though, he was powerful enough to burn Nurgle's garden and Guilliman described he was "talking to a star".
Pretty sure he just keeps himself on that throne because the Imperium needs it to navigate the Warp and unless he wants to fight all the 4 Chaos Gods at once, he's not gonna try taking a place in the warp himself.
E outclasses Tau god by huge margin. He is basically keeping rip in warpgate closed with one hand, lighthing the Astronomicon with other and using one leg to kick and keep chaos gods at bay. Strongest feat of Tau va we have seen is messing with few Death Guard spaceships.
Honestly it would be really cool if the Tau goddess and star child become the catalyst for the imperium and Shadowsun Tau to join up as a alliance kinda like the Inari makeing it a faction of order to protect and bounce off another in a few books

The Tau are in an extremely unique position in the lore and Game workshop have a great opportunity to make interesting events with the Tau.
Honestly, a cool idea would be Farsight coming in to more or less clonk the Skulls of the two sides of the religious war and basically go: "I know you're having a nice little holy war, but there are some VERY BIG BUGS over there and they would enjoy nothing more than feasting on our entrails."
Ngl this would be a great addition to the lore, getting into the nitty and gritty of social life in the Tau Empire with social unity and division with the emerge of believers and athiest remainers

Tau fans generally like it when the Tau Empire are relatively nice and diplomatic. They're an empire of many, many different xeno races. They need to be nice to their Auxillary allies else they risk facing rebellions from them. The Tau have had darkness since their inception, but that's never been good enough for some Imperium fans. For some reason GW tries to appeal to them and changes Tau lore.
GW should write factions for the fans of those factions. Imperium roleplayers don't change their minds and like Tau because GW make them grimderp.

There is such an obvious solution to this for them, become the prophets for tau'va, the same way they have done so for the greater good, tau'va is the manifestation of the greater good, and the ethereals are the guides of the greater good, ala they are the guides for those who follow the tauva. Religion normally births idealogy, here it is just idealogy has birthed religion, and if you're the paragon of one you can easily become seen as the paragon of the other.

I see this possible, it would be a cunning move from Tzeench to do that, it would also explain the lack of mentions about chaos cults in the Tau Empire. Tzeench followers would try to spread the myth of the greater good to their fellow humans.
It's really interesting to see the Tau go through phases of history the other factions already have. You hear bits and pieces of older empires histories from thousands or millions of years ago, but now get to see it happen in real time with the new guys

before i learnd about this i really hated the tau because the felt like the mary sues of the setting, they were always like "you may outnumber us 1000000 to one and you may have thousands of years of experience, but i have cool technology" out of every sticky situation wich just left a bad taste in my mouth. Now im super invested becasue they are struggling so badly.
Even if they win. There is a Risk Tau culture becomes Changed irreparably.
It is a great point about the population there, and it works exactly the same way in reality. If a population gets more wealth and education, their birthrates drop, minority or not. And if tau fail to deliver that wealth, that will be a problem more than one way.
I love how the humans are a broken mirror of the eldar and the tau a broken mirror of the humans. History does not repeat but it does rime.

The imperium was large enough before the schism. Meaning at the end of it there was enough left overs to make the imperium functional. The Tau are small, having a schism will make them even smaller. They better stop grabbing imperium property if they want an alliance
I think it’s safe to assume the ethereals might invest into a secret police of sorts in the future. Or at least thats what a warhammer writer should consider including in a future novel.
The funny thing is that for Tau Empire to continue to rapidly expand and become strong they would need to accept the faith, however, would that still be "Tau" Empire and not just a rival Empire to the Imperium? On the other hand, Tau Empire can become a Tau Reich - their expansion would become so slow they are likely to become non-threat to Imperium even if now the rule of Ethereals would be cemented. Imo it's a conflict of an empire and ethnostate - empire cannot be nationalistic as it either has to embrace multiculturalism or assimilate everyone into their singular group, so, basically what the US. Meanwhile if an empire decides to become an ethnostate it just dies, even if after millions of murdered civilians, so, what Ottoman Empire did by trying to remove everyone non-Turkish Muslim. And everyone knows what is a thing today - the US or the Ottomans

I think that having the Ethereals worshiping the T'au goddess to be perfect. If one of their highest ranking generals is a true believer, I can't imagine a small sect of the the Ethereal class aren't either. Perhaps that was why Shadowstrike was kicked out of that meeting...
The Tau have imo the most promise for cool factions and lore both on the tabletop and beyond.
Youve got Tau purists who are afraid of auxilliaries causing warp gods. Your classic balanced Tau force.
The Tau'va followers who keep more auxiliaries than ever and have faith as a core element.
Farsight with his mechs, heroes and melee combat.
And then the possibility of direct ethereal based nonsense.
The existance of Tau chaos shrines is an interesting thing when korne has been trying to get a hold on Farsight. Chaos amped tau and auxilliaries would be a sight to see, especially since if they can bring a tau version of a chaos god into reality, they could likely do the same for avatars of the chaos gods in the tau image.

I could honestly see the Tau Empire having something similar to the Battletech Terran Alliance’s demarcation declaration occur as information seem to takes an incredibly long time to reach T’au from their outlying worlds, making them incredibly hard for the higher up ethereals to successfully govern let alone defend.

tbf to Emps, according to books talking about how the Big E and Terra are perceived in the warp, he's basically eternally under watch by all 4 major Chaos Gods, and struggling to hold together the fragments of his soul and the thousands or millions of subcomponent aspects while keeping the Astronomicon lit. Plus, he was (ostensibly) a literal human being at one point, and one who detested the idea of Gods, so it's probably a bit harder for him to function as one while maintaining whatever is left of his human identity. Unlike Mommy Tau'va, who was seemingly woven wholecloth from the warp and has been so unnoticed by the powers in the warp that the deathguard commander literally couldn't believe that she existed until she gave his ship the ol' dick twist and crumpled it out of existence

I have mixed feelings on the Tau goddess, since I find it a little baffling that a relatively small population in a relatively small corner of the galaxy have fuelled a deity with such power already. Like, the Tau god seems to have more independent power than Ynnead. And for all of the psychic strength of the Aeldari they haven't been able to refuel any divine stuff whatsoever.
The t'au have more than a thousand planets and some of their auxiliaries are very psychic.
the Aeldari may be very psychic but are convinced of their own down which makes it happen.
I think some of it is the fact that her domain keeps her safe, despite her adolescent state. Her domain is like a tunnel between the two entrances of the Startide Nexus and seems to keep her safe in the same way that the Webway keeps Cegorach safe from Slaanesh.
