    The standoff between pro-Russia forces and Ukrainian troops continues on the outskirts of the rebel stronghold of Sloviansk in eastern Ukraine. But with heavier fighting escalating over the last few days, many residents are braving checkpoints and gunfire to flee the area for safer parts of the country. VICE News correspondent Simon Ostrovsky traveled to a checkpoint bordering Sloviansk and spoke to people leaving their homes behind as shots rang out in the background. None of these residents knows when they'll be able to return.

    Really glad to see Simon Ostrovsky back in the field. There seems no better journalist for this job.

  • @SBmasta441
    @SBmasta441 10 років тому +66

    It seems like after Simon's return he's preferred to stay back and cover domestic affairs while the other guy covers combat and military operations. Is that going to be a recurring theme, or has it just been that way coincidentally? I could totally see Simon not wanting to go back into danger after what he's been through.

    • @fox100cool
      @fox100cool 10 років тому +62

      It's safer for him to stay with friendly troops rather than wondering alone in donetsk with the camera guy before pro russians might recodnize him and arrest him

    • @SBmasta441
      @SBmasta441 10 років тому +3

      Fox100cool Well yes, of course. I'm just wondering if he actually specifically decided to do that, or if he just hasn't had the chance to get into anymore tricky situations yet. It would be completely understandable for him not to, I'm just wondering whether it's been a conscious decision, and if maybe one of the terms of his return was that he would be kept by VICE relatively out of danger. Either way I'm fine with it. I like that there are two journalists on the job now because they can cover far more and it adds some nice variation. Plus I like the other guy quite a bit, but I noticed other people may not share that sentiment.

      Henry Livingston seems to be doing the coverage of the rebels. I guess they don't recognize him yet.

    • @SBmasta441
      @SBmasta441 10 років тому +12

      Leelee He seems to be received a little better than Simon for some reason. I think in some videos I detected a little bit of hostility and resentment in Simon's voice when he talked to people who bossed around or mishandled him, and so he may sometimes come off as rude or abrasive. I don't speak Russian or Ukrainian so obviously my judgement isn't sound, but that could have something to do with it. Henry seems a little more open to being pushed around, and far more cautious than Simon, and also a little bit less intimidating. But anyway, none of that will matter when it comes to shooting. We'll just have to see what happens in the future.

    something seems odd about the guy at 1:31 he doesnt seem to "fit in " with the other troops and the way he describes them as "they" rather than "we" , he may be special forces of some kind but i have a feeling he isnt from Ukraine ....

    People saying that Russia has its full right to support the seperatists since the US is also supporting Ukraine are basically admitting the fact that Russia is involved in this war already. Countries who are attempting to suppress armed rebellion has a right to request for assistance from other sovereign nations. In fact, US and NATO is only supporting the Ukrainians with rations, training, and transportations. Nothing lethal. While Russia is sending in tanks, Grads, Buks, Uragans, guns and ammunitions for the seperatists.

      Cockpit bombs, Hamer, new types of guns and cash finances ....... that's what the US delivers Ukraine. Not only soldering, but also a weapon .....

      Hmm, that's not entirely true anymore. The United States provided Ukraine with Javelin missile launch systems in 2018. Apart from that it seems the only country that has send lethal aid to Ukraine is brave Lithuania. 😂

      I think its the Russia involvement that has VICE doing its coverage. Russia can cause this issue to become much larger then what is happening in Syria. Personally think Russia has gotten what it wanted (Crimea) and is done with this but who knows.

      Anyone with a modicum of intelligence is able to work out where the blame lies for the current crisis in Ukraine. Anyone with a modicum of intelligence knows which country is the most belligerent on the planet, a country that spends more on defence than the combined spending of all the other nations on earth; a country with around 900 military bases scattered around the globe, situated in 130 different countries; a country that since the end of World War 2 has overthrown 50 governments, some of which were democracies.
