I'm pretty sure I'm in the same situation. I bought my LBZ about a month and a half ago and it hasn't ever gotten above 165º. I'll be changing the t-stats tomorrow. Cheers!
@@mikem8475 Since putting the new thermostats in, it runs 180-190 (even in single digit ambient temps) depending on load. Better gas milage and more power.
Just did my thermostats. And it definitely has a fuel map change I can even tell the amount of smoke it is dumping now. It definitely was holding back when the temp was too low.
Thanks for video you described exactly what is going on with my lbz 2007 cat eyes.My temp gage needle is just starting to touch large line marker that is dead center between 160 large marker and 210 large marker.
Yes the whole fuel map thing is basically controlled from the coolant temp. If it is running cooler then the ecm basically thinks it's not up to temp yet and does dump more fuel through it.
I did your method. When I pulled out the Breather screw I put on my shop vac that I previously washed out. Probably could not fill a shot glass with the coolant I lost
@@Stapleton42 that’s good Mine dumped everywhere. The drain valve is a cool idea but since this original comment I’ve caught it dripping several times. Even sold my duramax since the comment lol. I miss it man so much.
I'm getting ready to change mine, but mine has the dual alternator option and the second alt is next to the AC pump and would need to come off too, this looks way easier, dealer wanted $700!!!! I'll do it for $30.
My 06 Lbz barely gets to 1/4 on the temp gauge (between 160-210) i noticed I’m only getting about 10-12 mpg, after you fixed the issue what temp are you running normally? And mpg?
I get 9-10 towing, 12 city, 16-17 highway, truck is stock and I don’t know if the thermostats are bad or not, but with the age of the truck I’m gonna replace them and flush the coolant system in the near future as preventative.
My truck has been fairly well kept and maintained, rolled over 541k miles today, I have been thinking about flushing the heater core when I replace my thermostats, as my heat is almost non existent but it has been a very good truck to me other than that,
@@derekm3304 yeah my LBZ just turned 90k. I really don't drive it often, its my tow rig for my big trailer so I never noticed it until I saw this on UA-cam. if I don't have a trailer I run like 180 max unless I am beating on it OR if I am pulling a trailer then it runs "normal" 200 temp. Probably does if it’s a dually. I’m not sure how a ccsb single wheel LML truck would do but I’d imagine it’s a lot better than my dually lol. Just now going from PA to SC to FL the dually got 11-12 mpg average (on the dash) towing probably almost 10k between the LBZ and trailer weight.

What I was told is it runs richer until it’s up to temp in an effort to get the engine warmed up.

This is where it’s a smart idea to cut your passenger rad hose and then install a drain valve.
It didn’t lose much coolant. Way less than I anticipated

why did u not put a gasket on the thermostat housing
It is built into the new thermostat if I remember correctly. The rubber ring around it is the gasket

Probably a P0540 code, intake heater circuit, from doing a EGR delete.
