Great video. A few points I'd like to discuss if anyone wants to share their thoughts. I agree that in pursuing justice we must never become perpetrators ourselves, but I also think those in the social justice world represent a loud minority with a lot of influence. (I'm going to go on a whim and suggest that you are referring to the looting and rioting of the BLM protests. I think there is a bit more nuance in this situation than sheer rage coming from unjustified anger, but I hear your essential point I think.) I understand your point about not blaming the son for the fathers' sins, but then how must we address either a) current injustices still being perpetrated or b) those who deny that injustices were committed, therefore not taking the opportunity to learn from them?
Eg. The abolition of slavery was seen as radical and destructive of progress and selfish at the time. I like your point about not judging people who naively accept the norms of the time - this makes sense. But how do we know that we are not naively accepting the norms of our time?
Ultimately, I reach the same conclusion as you that the atman is the one truth that unites us all. Yet despite this eternal truth, I still believe Hinduism prioritizes seva and ahimsa and karma-yoga as much as self-reflection and internal realization. "Personal responsibility" comes across to me as a very conservative argument - and a very good one - but the idea that we must master ourselves before seeking to change the world is incomplete in my opinion. Virtually all teachers become masters in the practice of teaching. All the great leaders of our shastra became masters of their spiritual self, not before they became leaders, but as they were leading. Spiritual progress comes through practice I think, not just preparation.
I sometimes worry that "spiritual bypassing" can render us selfish or condescending, when it may be in our natures to engage with the issues of kali-yuga according to our varnas. Social activism, when combined with internal self-reflection and seeking higher knowledge, can be part of advancing spiritually. (There are many examples of these imperfect but influential people in history - Mandela, Gandhi, etc.)
I would like to hear your thoughts on collective responsibility according to dharmic traditions. Where I'm at right now is that while we must always be responsible for ourselves, we must also care for and serve others. If we would rather prioritize individual responsibility, fine. We don't need to expect to reap the benefits of others' goodwill. But, part of individual responsibility is cultivating selflessness and service in a way that suits our varna. I believe part of our dharma is to help create an environment whereby others can pursue their dharmas as well, free from the restrictions imposed on them by material designations. I would love to hear what others think.

    • @UnaPersona-b1y

I believe that personal responsibility is important, but we cannot just stay with that, since worrying only about ourselves and ignoring the problems that surround us would be to be selfish.
People who choose to ignore the suffering of others (by preferring to focus on themselves, or by the law of karma) are not correct. It can never be a bad thing to help others. We should not act out of selfishness, but considering others as superior to ourselves, and act accordingly, not expecting to get something in return, but only because it is the right thing to do.

The problem isn't the lack of spirituality amongst the people. The problem is false teachers taking them away from finding the Divine on their journey through this life.
6:40 you made the point on people reflecting on how cruel we were to the animals for using them to satiate our pallete. However the problem is the scale to which this is happening, where people's entire livelihoods are based on industrialised killing of these animals. This systemic destruction of the lives of these animals and dehumanised people in a country is the reason why people call for change. Compassion based on personal responsibility alone is lame and powerless.

It is good to consider how Dharma can be used to correct the problems of our society.
But... your take on history and the social justice issues in America now are short-sighted.
It has far more to do with the concentration of capital in the hands of greedy people.
They corporations are ruining this planet to the point that it will no longer be fruitful and the people are being ground down to worldwide poverty.
Your arguments sound more like an apologist for the Kauravas saying how they have been good kings and that we should learn to work out our problems with them. Krishna tried this many times and each time they rejected the offers of the Great Counselor.
The corporations are completely Adharmic, they will not even give the amount of earth that will fit on the point of a pin.
It is time to choose a side Arjuna and do not make your false arguments as you instructed in the video.
Violence is Adharma, but Violence in defense of Dharma is Dharma and the people are crying out for justice now.

  • @giren0079

I don't think you have studied Social Justice enough or you learned from a right winger or "enlightened centrist". Firstly Social Justice understands that there are many things that cause people problems Intersectionality is about this idea that people can have many causes that are inter related with each other that effect their lives, so Social Justice isn't an simple answer to a complex question. Another issues is is seen as an over reaction or simple is the call to Defund the Police. Defund the police does not simple mean take money from the police it means to reallocate funds from police departments to give to other groups to handle situations that police aren't necessary for such as mental health check up and drop overdoses. I also find it really odd that you compare the motivations of people who want to bring about social equality for the most people possible to the Nazis whose stated goal was to kill or enslave every non Aryan( Non Germanic) person. This isn't to say there aren't bad people who use the language of social justice to do and say bad things but by and large social justice is a good movement with good goals.

But this attitude is not rash, this is through the lens of analytic study that common ills of our world are of that from the bourgeoisie class, through theory and time again once we look to the historical struggle of the proletariat Its Ironic you mention you the gita as Arjuna wanted to avoid conflict, to avoid that war of massive change but you are doing that! For the cause of the proletariat is not only a righteous cause, but that in which is our duty to follow and carry out.
You yourself have mentioned elements of our capitalist world, that, our insane demands of product makes ethical vegetarian farms nearly impossible. It is because of the demand of capital that those things are forced that way. Even within the caste system (the way it was supposed to go) the Brahmans had a duty for taking care of the lower casts but in this, our current state is not the case, instead we have cults of the bourgeoisie upper class, murder by their hands and all sorts of unspeakable crimes, but you then go on to doubt this struggle of the proletariat class? I really see how bias this channel is add that to the irony of using the Gita while ignoring virtuous goals.
