Simple Floating Corner Shelf - No Specialist Hardware Or Fixings

- In this video I make a couple of simple and modern DIY corner floating shelves for our new living room. I used some offcuts of MDF and a piece of pine to make the shelf, and the whole project took a couple of hours to do - nice and quick. The floating shelf requires no specialist hardware or fixings.

This is the most easy method I've seen so far
Mate, I just wanted to say I love the way you explain things. You provide the details that a lot of people tend to leave out. Also, you show errors and adjustments. Awesome work!
Woodworking AND The Pixies??!! It simply doesn't get any better.
Hell of a nice shelf!
This is my favorite thumbnail on your videos because it looks like an optical illusion.
Really cool that cleat, I have to put up two corner shelves but I will use the cleat under a piece of 3/4" plywood, they are just for a couple of small speaker for 5.1 surround sound system. Since the speakers will be low closer to the floor the cleats won't be very visible.
Good honest video - many thanks.
Nice job as usual. You know, it looks like an optical illusion when it's on its own.
I was given permission to take home 2 pallets this morning. Can't wait to start building something with them. I really like your videos and your style of presentation. All the best.
I use old gift cards to finish caulking. Leaves the desired look and easily cleaned for future use.
Very nice 👍👍
I love this. It’ll be perfect for my cacti…. Or at least some of them anymore. Thank you. 🌵
Thanks for sharing another cool little project. I like the idea as it gives a very strong shelf with no clutter from brackets etc. One thing I learned when serving my time was when you start a screw unto a raw plug give the screw a tap in a bit with the hammer so that the raw plug goes in a bit deeper, this prevents the raw plug being drawn out the hole and coming into contact with the back of the wood. Also it puts the raw plug into the brick rather than relying on the surface plaster. Hope this makes sense. 🙂
Nie umiem po Angielsku ale to co zobaczyłem to jest rewelacja. Wielkie dzięki
I love them and the plant is awesome , it fits perfectly there !!!!!!!!!!!!! Great job !!!!!!!!!!!!
Hello, my talented friend. Thank you for this simple floating corner shelf knowledge. You're a great master. Thank you for sharing. Yours truly...........
Very smooth. I know a room or two in the house that would suit these shelves perfectly. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks , nice job. Looks like it grown there.
How lucky you are to have a corner that's 90° ;) Great work!
Edit: commented before you installed, I take that back. Seems nobody has square corners!
😂
Wow - I could try this 20 times and still not be able to do what you did. Looks so good!
Good job! Wishing the best in your new digs.
Looks great! Love the idea 💡 ♥️
Thanks my friend
Great idea for great looking shelf
شكراً جزيلاً لك
فكرة 💡 عبقرية و طريقة 👌رائعة
👍👍👍👍
really nice result! Looking forward to see the wall project ^^
Love the plants Keith. 🌱💚
Sprinkle a bit of table salt on to stop them sliding around while glueing.
Good, sensible woodworking.
So simple, yet so useful.
That is one happy spider plant!
It's unusually healthy!!
Great video again Keith 👍 keep it up. Can't wait till your new workshop is fully up and running 👊✔
Great looking floating shelf Keith! Thanks for sharing the video with us.👌👍😎JP
Nice & simple project. I see that old & ugly corner shelving unit in our living room being replaced in the near future. Thanks for the idea.
put sanding sealer on the mdf and it paints perfect. i always do that.
Nice one. Great idea and looks the business
Woah dude, new mitre saw? How did I miss that?!
I still have the Axminster but I think I'm going to get rid of it as the hikoki is much nicer to use. Need to build the new mitre station soon
Another great video. Lots of good tips in there. Keep them coming. Looking forward to the next workshop update :)
Looks decent mate
Nice little project. One thing I would have done different is to round over the corner that goes into the corner of the wall. It will make the sides fit closer to the wall.
Love, love them👍🏼👍🏼🙂
Nice... Mr. Dylan cannot get there!
Great work
Very interesting way of making a floating corner shelf. I've never seen it like this before. Thanks for sharing.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who does not have square corners in his house. Maybe I'll use this technique in the near future.
But I think I'll adapt the wall sides of the shelf to the angle of the wall(s). If you hadn't showed it, I'd never believe that a 12 mm x 12 mm slat
can hold so much.
A better solution to the end grain of the cleats showing/sticking out would be to make the cleats 20mm shorter at each and and leave this area mdf, ie don’t trim it back the full length of the shelf....hope this makes sense, hard point to put across in a comment
yup, good idea lad.
Yeah I made this shelf a few weeks ago and the shorter cleats. It does look good.
Good idea
Nice work mate.
Neat little corner shelf mate. 👍
Spider plants are pretty cool indoor plants, they are actually really good air purifiers. 👌
Nicely done once again Keith 👍. Nice little home project. As previously suggested, use some salt between your glued faces, it acts like millions of little locating spikes between the faces. Just give it a try... It works a treat 😁. Looking forward to the next shop video. 😁👍.
Nice seflstand
Nice video Keith!
I would recommend using a iron-on edging , paints up really well .
Hmm...liking these. Might make some for myself this avo.
A drinks straw works great for scooping up caulk and glue from corners. Nice project. 👍🏻🍺🍻
Quick tip in the material faces sliding around with glue applied - throw on a bit of salt/slightly coarse salt on top of the glue, it provides bite much like an anti-slip surface and will even prevent slipping under clamping! Not sure if I learnt from our FB group or Paul S though
Why do i find the phrase "wet finger" so funny ! Lol ..great vid keith . Nice one
New saw ?...looks good
Look at you with your straightish walls. I'd kill for a wall that straight, I live in a terraced house that's over a hundred years old. 🤣 nice shelves Keith.
Shellac is a fantastic sealer for MDF better than any primer drys in minutes
Fantastic video. Just the kind of think I’m looking for. I want to make a book shelf above my lads bed (head end) is this type of method a good idea if the shelf was a long shallow triangle shelf? What type of size cleat would I need? And would I need any further bracing? Just fear it would topple on to him as he sleeps!!!
I was looking to paint mdf with emulsion but was concerned the cut edges might swell being water based, after seeing this and the finish you have got I may now give it ago , thanks.
I didn't get any swelling but now you mention it, it's water based paint I used so maybe it should have swelled
Is that the pixies in the background I hear?
Great little project, excited to see more of the various house/shop builds
It is 😁thank you!
Little tip Keith add a bit of salt to the glue stops work sliding about.
after sanding the bare MDF edges coat them with pva glue and water mixture 1:1
let dry and sand again with 240 grit.
will make edges very smooth and not soak up much paint at all.
That's a great idea. Did you invent that or learn it from someone?
Like it, thanks
@@Brian-Burke learnt from someone but It does work great.
specialy on routed MDF profiles that you make where you have lots have open surfaces
I don't understand how that's any quicker than what I'd do i.e. paint, sand, paint?
@@RagnBoneBrown After the glue up you sanded the edges for the first time.
Before that you could use the glue up time to do the edges with the glue water mixture. Than sand edges smooth and paint the first layer.
I’ve heard that adding salt on top of the glue adds some friction and the MDF won’t slide as easily.
Great video Keith as usual, shame about the Radio or CD noise in the background, have a nice day Mate !!!
Couple of tips
the cleats should be shorter so you dont see the end grain
Use a tiny bit of salt to stop the boards sliding during the glue up
You can use watered down pva to seal the end grain on mdf
Hi, looks good, I like the "I didn't have any primer so i didn't bother" 😁
If you don't mind me saying, when i build these i make the groove deeper so the shelf could be scribed to the wall but that's what caulk is for😉 & the infill panel could have been made longer on the front 2 edges/corners that meet the wall, cutting the infill piece for the cleat groove stopping short 10mm of the end, so that the groove & the ends of the cleat weren't seen & need filling,
Cheers Gid, great advice
And your video would have been 25 minutes long and in 3 parts. And I would have spent 75 minutes on the toilet with my wife wondering if I fell in
😂 I'll take that as a compliment 😁👍
The still shot at 9:07 really messed with my brain 😆
Great video ! shelf turned out really nice, well done good luck with the rest of your home
Are you the poster boy for Hikoki? Not jealous at all 😂😂.
To do a good looking cut like the first you tried you need to offset the nail by the amount of straight that should remain ... or do something even more fancy like constructing an oval that is based on the diagonal (can be done with two nails and string) ... but I don't even want to think of how to calculate the starting points for that :D
Either way, good stuff.
add salt to your glue ups it stops slippage
Yea the corners of a plaster wall are hardly ever square due to the tape and joint compound. Great project I think I will put 3 different sizes in the kitchen .
Ask the Mrs for a sliding bevel for Christmas. Will help with all those Acute and Obtuse angles every corner seems to have.
Nice job as usual though.
Cliff Carlo sliding bevels are a piece of piss to make, and have been used by apprentices to hone skills for years.
@@BrainFizz charming .
Cliff Carlo all I meant was, they are very easy to make.... I meant no offence.🤷♂️😳
You're wearing a hat. Oh yeah love the floating shelves , you solved a problem for me with this upload.
Question for the reclaimed wood expert: I am working on a small gift project using reclaimed wood (dunno which type) from an old coffee table top. I intend to route a nice message into the wood and then finish it with some type of finish (don't know if I"m gonna use paint or stain yet). I'm currently in the process of sanding the piece but I'm struggling to get all the previous finish off. How important is it to remove everything? I've gotten the majority off the front but I struggle with the back, where the stain has been applied in different amounts (possibly over many different layers), as well as the sides, which have been dinged up quite severely over time. I like the character of the worn wood so I'm hesitant to sand everything flat/ square.
Does any leftover finish affect the new stain's quality or is it just removed completely to give a more uniform finish across the piece?
Also two tips you probably already know but I thought I'd mention here anyway:
- For the MDF edges I've heard it suggested that you can mix some wood glue with water and 'paint' it over the edges first. My dad has used wallpaper glue in the past instead, which works great but does leave sort of a glossy finish. The prep will soak up in the MDF leaving no room for the paint, which is probably a cheaper solution than just painting layer after layer from what I've heard.
Also for the MDF boards slipping I've heard people suggest you can sprinkle a little bit of table salt between the layers to stop them from sliding around. Haven't tried it myself yet but they say it works.
Ernavill sounds like a good question for woodworking.stackexchange.com
what's ur intro song
whats with the hat Keith? bad hair day? or got gum stuck in it? great video as always! thanks for your hard work!
It was a rare sunny day out
Plasterers ........ Achilles heel of any wall shelf project
Has Dillon tried to get up there yet?
He is too old to attempt it! 🐈
my favorite part is you make the same mistakes as I do.
Glad I stayed til the end to see the shop progress.
(Side note, that youtube thumbnail was weird - grey on grey means I had a hard time figuring out what was what. Maybe if the plant was in the photo too? I've watched so many videos that stress how important the youtube thumbnail is, I am now extra paranoid and hyper aware. And yeah, I know some of my own thumbnails suck. :-)
Wordsnwood (Art Mulder) nothing wrong with good constrictive criticism! however I really liked the thumbnail, it stuck out in my feed I thought it was a visual illusion but it was in line with your other thumbnails, I liked it.
I made three different thumbnails and couldn't decide which to go with but you're probably right maybe I'll change it 😁
Why does the dude look like a younger version of Michael Rosen lol

"No specialist hardware". But you WILL need a table saw.
“No specialist hardware”
Films entire video with specialist hardware and tools
😂 which specialist hardware????? When did I use specialist hardware???? I used wood and screws, where is the specialist hardware???? And I never mentioned no specialist tools. This is a woodworking channel. I kind of need tools to do woodworking
MDF edging is terrible, especially if you try to use wall paint with no primer. At the very least you should have cut some thin strips and done an edge banding
