  • Dr Amina Shareef is Assistant Professor in Education at Goldsmiths, University of London. Her research seeks to understand how Muslim people are unmade as tawhidic subjects-subjects forged in relation to tawhidic worldview in which there is no god but God-and remade as liberal subjects by anti-Muslim racism.

It is equally pathetic that while Muslims use all kind of tricks to migrate to West (leaving their home-lands) upon naturalization they start hating the western values and want Islamic practices in public places. If prayers are really that important why not send children to the private schools allowing that.

Even back in the nineties and early 2000s our children were provided with a room to pray in and we had an activity room for those whose parents wanted to excuse them from the nativity play and during Ramadan to rest during lunchtime and that was primary schools.

    Eloquence- Allah Humma Barik!
It's so interesting how what Sis Amina talks about British schools, many muslims worldwide living in muslim countries, too can vouch, their schools, their teachers, all made them feel inferior as muslims!
The colonial past still haunts our muslim identity - living in muslim countries!
I know an ex homeschooling mum here in UK, her daughter does niqab. She goes to a Catholic school now .. she prays in the school too!
We all have our own journeys, I have found British people quite accommodating to Islam
The narcissistic liberals or the aplogetic muslims in the muslim countries sometimes make you feel more inferior since their vibes stem from a deep-rooted sense of inferiority within their own selves.
The British, having their own sense of racial identity intact, actually behaved quite positively to practising muslim women ...
We have to do the balancing act of integration aswell, it takes two to tango!
Islam is beautiful, most beautiful gift to humanity, and its how you carry your Islam, and how your kids carry their Islam, that will eventually lead them to pave their place .. with character- confidence and creativity!

You can pray both Zuhr and Asr at the same time during Asr. The early Muslims in the time of the Holy Prophet would not separate Zuhr and Asr in congregational prayers; they would pray both at the azan of Zuhr.

Strangely enough, people in muslim countries are less critical (if at all) in the academic institutes to these ideas, even though the ones pushing these ideas proactively proclaim objectivty and critical thinking. I mean, both types of people should be critical, the ones who spread these ideologies because that is what they claim about these idelogies, as well as the muslims because new ideas in any society do usually face some questioning, debate or discussion. This whole system produces overconfident, outspoken, politically active type people who don't take Islam seriously, and timid, confused muslims who value Islamic values, because the system pushes the ones, put down the others from an early age.

Great talk, masha'Allah. I just worry about postmodern influence in pushing against a "white curriculum" instead of simply focusing on the main problem of the UK trying to label standard Islamic belief (and possibly other religious beliefs) as extremism and passing laws to criminalize traditional beliefs and practices.
No matter which country in the world you go to, much of its education system will be centered around the culture and people of that country. Do we think that educational systems in countries like China, Brazil, Indonesia, Mexico, Jordan, etc won't disproportionately focus on their local history and the historical people and that any immigrants to those society would feel slightly alienated? Of course they do and of course immigrants to those areas will naturally feel alienated at least a bit. Much of British history (same with American, Canadian, Australian, etc.) will be centered around white Christians. If we spend time fighting that, we lose credibility with many and divert our attention from the main issue. An Italian living in Qatar shouldn't be upset if Qatari history predominates the educational system vs Italian history, despite Italy playing a greater role in major events in history. It would simply be up to the parents of such kids to instill the values and beliefs they want to pass down and not leave it up to the government they are living in to teach our unique beliefs and values.
41:37: I think the point you mention here is great in regards to the need of Muslims to actively educating their own kids, but at the same time also negates your argument that the standard curricula are racist by design. If homeschooling and Islamic education is imparting a "strong sense of your history, your past, your contribution" to children and "doesn't mean you will necessarily become a supremacist of your culture" (which I agree with) and then by extension having an Ango-centric education shouldn't do that to UK's kids.

I would definitely be all for moving back to Muslim countries, but good luck finding one that isn't in war (western colonialism at work) or with ridiculous laws that make it impossible to ever get a residence permit there. Otherwise yeah, if you have the privilege to move to somewhere like Turkey, great, but good luck with that. Turkey's laws by the day are getting more and more oppressive towards immigrants. Really I'm not seeing that there is a place in the world today where a Muslim can live with any degree of stability, a "normal" life where you don't have to keep moving or have trash laws forced on you every other weekend. But then I guess that's just this dunya all over again, not really a permanent residence..

The last part of the video is silly. Yes, Muslim countries are imperfect and you still need to focus on educating your children correctly in Muslim countries, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't migrate.
In Muslim countries it's difficult to raise children because of Western influence. In the West, it's impossible, because not only is Western philosophy in possession of soft power like it has in Muslim countries, but Western philosophy also has popular support and the law behind it.
You think Sunday school is enough for Muslim children to do well in the West? Have you not heard about the British government closing down mosqued? However, this is not the only subject that is affecting our children the schools of today are teaching children about two mummies and two daddies. As parents, we need to be very careful and make sure that we are teaching our children the truth because these schools I strongly believe will corrupt the minds of our children and destroy families.
This type of nasty information will create curiosity in children. Curiosity leads to Action and action leads to destruction.

This new direction pointed by the court’s decision and the redefinition of Religious values/Islamic Values in the new bill…. As the sister suggests is designed to change the goal posts ONCE-again.
This is where political influence and direction is coming into play….and is moving this country towards an intolerant one with no place for anything Other than Western Liberalism.
We can see the breakdown of our western society all around us, and the gross exploitation in the name of LIBERALISM, a word which basically takes out All reference to any Religion and gives subjective morality - which essentially means every one decides what is right or wrong and their is NO OBJECTIVE MORALITY…
This liberal view and ideology is thus pushing us as a society closer to the animals, who do not have our capacity and capability, and so far from freeing us is equating us to Animals and no more-only catering to our own whims and desires without regard to how it effects us, society, the environment, our relationship with the rest of the world and humanity……
A society needs objective rules, it needs to stand up for values and principles that benefit us ALL rather than a few.
Religion provides such a way and gives direction to all who follow its guidance…this should be encouraged rather than discouraged….
The ONLY-religion that provides such direction and keeps you on the straight and narrow in a very balanced way is Islam, it is everyone’s benefactor and should be studied and questioned (as it asks it if it’s readers) to see the sublime beauty and strength that it’s message and guidance provides….
    Take care

    • @ShakirahIbaad

Because Islam has been racialised as ‘not white’ by the ‘colonialist western hegemony’, any discrimination against Muslims or hateful rhetoric against Islam is therefore Islamophobic and therefore racist. This does not include genuine debate or criticism of Islam or Muslims. Many Muslims are white, however Islam is perceived by ‘the west’ as the religion of Black and Brown people. This has been the case since early orientalists encountered Islam and framed Islam and Muslims as barbaric and inferior to Christianity and ‘western culture’. Therefore anti-Muslim hate/Islamophobia comes from the same place intellectually and emotionally as racism towards any other racialised group or religion.

If all other Minorities demand for prayer during break time and without hurting other religious sentiments then there won't be enough time for going to the class rather wait for their turn to pray according to the religious belief systems. Other Minorities are not demanding doesn't give you the right to take the advantage, courts might have thought through their wise knowledge not by your narrow mindsets. Anyway if given permission and as we all know kids are kids what if other minorities are non minorities tries to make fun or start to sloganeering which will hurt their prayers, that will be another headache to tackle for schools. Take for instance some schools allow Halal meat what if the other minority parents start to demand for their religious meat selection would the caterer provide numerous meat selections. When I was growing as a child we used to keep all our religious beliefs at home once we wear our school uniform and be as one, some idiots who want to make themselves popular started this divide in the community demanding all such nonsense.

    1. Styled himself as the champion of the British Muslim community on issues such as resisting a pro-LGBT syllabus
    2. Lost his tongue and nodded politely when Owen Jones attacked George Galloway for not engaging in identity politics and being friendly enough to the LGBT cause. He allowed the Galloway bashing and couldnt resist partaking (at a time when a significant number of British Muslims are squarely behind Galloway).
    3. Returns to our screens to continue being our champion for these causes
    Incredible.
(I'm not typing this because im fanatically pro-Galloway, but, as a result of the above, it has become apparent to me that Jalal places political point-scoring well above the causes he supposedly champions).
