How to Build a DIY Travel Trailer - Dinette, Bed, Cabinets and more (Part 6)
Вставка
- Опубліковано 11 січ 2019
- Today I'm building the front convertible dinette and sleeping area in the DIY Travel Trailer Project. The Dinette includes a table with seating that converts to a bed and also has a drawer and some flip up storage under the seating. I also added some vinyl flooring and cabinets above the dinette that will also double as the distribution area for the 12V wiring.
Next up on the Travel trailer project will be to run the 12v wiring, add interior lighting, add a coupler and weight distribution/sway control, and finally build the kitchen area. After that will be to take her camping!
Thanks for watching and let me know if you have any questions!
Joe

I wish I could be fortunate enough to have an intelligent creative friend like you.
If I ever build a camper this is the guy I want helping me. Everything looks solid and looks like better than factory made.
You're a great dad ... God bless you and your sweet family
Thank you BMP! I appreciate that... I try my best, but am trying to be better each day too! God Bless you and your family too!
Still loving the entire build process ! Taking time and adapting as you go is great. Very much looking forward to the rest of it. Thanks for sharing your build in such detail !
I think that's a great lesson. Sometimes you have to take a step back and take a look at the project. Taking that extra time to make sure you have something that works and your satisfied with is priceless. Great work, Joe!👍
Yes, for sure! I've all to often powered through to get something just workable and regretted it...and really wanted to do it right on this one... I guess my old age is at least increasing my wisdom. Thank you Jim!
Love the trailer built ins!!! They look professional, comfortable and the storage and moving mechanisms are fantastic!!! As always your work is impressive, creative and inspiring 🤟🏼
Thanks so much JewDd89! It was a lot of seeing what would fit right in that space and I was really not liking the first version... but am now super happy with the result
Reminds me of the Edison/light bulb invention story. You just need to see/test the results of your ideas in action to be able to improve upon them.
You've done an amazing job thank you for your honesty and transparency enjoy your camper
love this. am at this stage of the rebuild of my 76 fireball. paneling will be finished tomorrow, then on to the booths, this is so freggin helpful! thanks. your building style for the booths has really helped me figure out how to finish it right!
sir.. i used allure tiling in my house wet areas (i.e. laundry, bathrooms) and i love the stuff.. super easy to install and tuff.. you made a good choice.
respectfully; anthony
I have 2 10' shelves in my living room held up with 4 of those exact brackets on each. I had my 220lb friend swing on the shelves after I hung them and it held just fine. I love how strong they are, and that they were the cheapest brackets HD had.
I love that you are so positive. It's a great build.
Really enjoyed this one. You hit the nail on the head about not necessarily being a bad thing to step back and reassess your approach to solving a problem. Good job, keep em coming.
Thank you so much Ben! It was tough stop and add time to the project... but looking back now... totally worth the extra effort!
About to rebuild mine. Like how yours is more updated and modern looking with the straight angled line instead of curved as mine is. Will go with that design for my side pieces as well.
what a beautiful man you are

Damn! Amazing how you make it look so easy, when there is so much involved! Nice work & Thanks for sharing!
We got many funs and knowledges from your amazing vedio of making a van, thank you very much our handsome engineer and your sweet families. great!
Amazing and very professional work I can foresee plenty of family camping ⛺️ trips 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾
Thank you Fadsad! I appreciate you watching and yes, there are plenty of trips getting planned! We are so excited!!!!
It looks great. I like the aluminum trim around the seats. Great job on everything!
Wow! Super professional table/bed and cabinetry! I love how you changed the cushions to make them more comfortable and functional for your particular needs. 👍
Thank you Mae! I appreciate that :)
Fantastic. I love the look. It’s calm, clean, and efficient.
Thank you Jessica!
Nice work; the table mechanism is really cool making the dinette functional as a dining area converting to a roomy bed. I think your modification to the back-rest was a good idea and looks much more comfortable than the original back. Roof lockers look good and make for good storage space.
You're doing a great job with this! Especially since you've done it all from scratch!
You are a master craftsman sir. So, so impressive. The attention to detail and precision is remarkable. This is not something anyone would ever believe was made at home by a single person. Just wow. If youre ever in north Tx id sure love to have your help on my projects. Two thumbs up.
So cute when your little one is lying down with the toes a wiggling! lol. It is really shaping up!
That dinette area came out awesome, the table mechanism is very nice.
Amazing work you done love it I love how you start frm the beginning you start from your welding your trailer it’s a dream come true awesome work n Godbless 🇦🇺🇦🇺🤗🤗
Enjoy all your projects! You are a pretty “handy” fellow. Keep making the videos for us to enjoy.
You do better work than most US RV manufacturers.
Huge huge thanks for this video, it was exactly what I was looking for and you were very clear explaining everything. Can’t wait to get to work on mine now :)
Nice workshop. Your videos are very informative and helps to give a good idea of how much is involved with the build of a travel trailer.
Looking good Joe. The aluminum trim finishes it off really nicely.
Thanks Wayne! I really liked the aluminum as well!
The only change I think I would make would be a horizontal cleat for the table top to rest on when it's down as a bed. Those short vertical ones may wind up poking someone in the calves more than a horizontal one would. I really like your build, you have great skills and are definitely making a much better trailer than you could ever buy! Linda and I send our best.
Thank you! I appreciate that :)
regarding the support cleat... I actually thought of that first... but the reason I went with the vertical ones is so there would be some space where nothing was behind your leg, versus the horizontal would be along the fully length. But only time will tell I guess... if there end up being bothersome I'll add a horizontal cleat :D
Thank you so much for your videos. You are an excellent builder/teacher. Keep up the good work.
Very nice to update on your project. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. Aloha
Thanks Myles! and aloha back to you! :D
Outstanding work. The table - bunk combo turned out great. Your modifications really made a difference.
thank you Bob!
Incredible job , it's great to see you man up after the hail storm and push through the project
Great enginuity and workmanship.
Nicely done. Gave me some ideas for ours. Thank you.
Cool setup Joe. I like the table folding mechanism. Also, nice way to make the stops. Looks like they are very sturdy.
Top notch work. Inspiring me to get going on some wood working projects around the house.
You have done one heck of a beautiful job building this camper and everything I see you do is in such detail very impressive
Good idea with the pullout drawer.
I'm from Libya 🇱🇾
I like ur work so much
U r amazing 👌
Very creative solution to the table support issue!
I like the dark gray contrast of the table mechanism
thank you!
I love the functionality built in to a small space. Can not wait for next video.
Thank you TEK! I appreciate that! and I can't wait to get the next videos out to you guys... because it will mean that I will be that much closer to using it :)
Awesome video looks great !!!😀😀😀😀
Thanks N Vaglia!
Great job, beautiful family and thank you for sharing another informative video.
Thank you Daniel! We are really excited to be getting close to using it! :D
Nice craftsmanship. You can build a camper and people see you going down the road and think you're going camping. If I were to build a camper people would see it and think I was going to the scrap yard.
Thank you Bob! But I'm sure it would be fine... one step at a time... haha... and on that note, if you ever did want to build a camping.... the site tnttt.com is a great forum where a lot folks build all sorts of campers DIY style ! :)
Joe
That table is pretty slick.
Getting all kinds of ideas about what to do modifying my camper, Thanks for sharing.
Awesome series of videos duder!
Looking good so far well done
thank you!
Great project! I'd use that trim bracket over the table mechanism as a place to screw in a slim organizer for putting things like salt and pepper in or cutlery, or even cellphones and personal effects for when you are sleeping. I'd want to add charging ports.
I watch all videos from beginning. It is a good job. Have fun with your trailer with family 👍.
Incredible craftsmanship 👍👍👍
The trailer looks great, I love that table mechanism. Good stuff.
Thank you Raynola! That mechanism was a sweet find on ebay for $99 shipped to me. I was looking at the van and boat table legs that retract and they were all into the 250-300+ range. so I feel good with this one, even it it required a little customization
CAn you share the name of the part and model number so we can source?
The table set up is very impressive!
Always feel inspired watching your videos.
I'm really enjoying this build series on the camp trailer. I've been think of doing something like this for some time now and it is giving me some insights. Keep it up when done I would be interested in a price break down.
Thanks Matt! If you are thinking about building a trailer I can't recommend the forum tnttt.com (teardrops and tiny travel trailers).... Its mostly folks like you and I that have built all sorts of amazing home built trailers. LOTS of great info there! I haven't posted in years but have been meaning to throw this build on there when I'm done. Just a great site.
As for a cost break down... I may do something on this at the end. But it will be very general as a lot of things have broad ranges in prices and I there are so many different options that can span that price greatly. But I will likely do something on that and maybe contrast it to a used one versus a new. I can tell you now that a used one is likely a better value to get a trailer considering the time I have invested into this... but I'm still trending way better than buying a new one. haha.. not sure if that made sense or not :)
When is the ceiling coming as well
The build is looking great, you are really doing a wonderful job.
Thank you Steven! there are a lot of mistakes along the way but I'm happy with the progress :)
Great creativity! I need to make a table bed for my semi sleeper truck
Like the slight leaning back on the seat backs! Nice!
thanks! that was one of the things that I couldn't accomplish with the original cushions... and I think makes it really comfortable :)
How did you build the lean for the back seat? Wished there was more details on how to do the angle.
Thanks for sharing this, Joe. Love the inspiration.
thank you Mark! I appreciate you watching and love hearing from you! :)
You make it look easy..all the precise cuts and angles where I can barely attach two pieces of wood together!! haha..I plan to build out a cargo van into a camper and move to west TX to build my own cabin...I have a long way to go!!
Keep up the good work. You are an inspiration to everyone aspires to learn and grow in skills and knowledge.
You laying down on your side and batting your eyes, had me in stitches!!!!
You are a wonderful craftsman
thank you Sally!
Absolutely beautiful wood work, pleasure to watch and thanks for showing
Thank you so much Peter!
We loved the table support and the overall look of the build!! Loving the way the trailer project is coming together!!
Thank you! I'm very happy with the progress so far! Long but worth it when we are using it :D
btw... I'm going to be doing some more shipping container shop projects very soon too! :)
@@homesteadonomics Great news Joe!! I would love to se more Shipping Container shop project!! I always learn so much from it!! Thanks so much for sharing!!
I guess Im asking randomly but does anyone know of a tool to get back into an Instagram account..?

Thank you for sharing. Your first on my search for dinette ideas.
Great looking trailer. Doing well!
Wow your daughter is getting big! I remember the early episodes when she was soo much younget... they grow up fast!
Keep up the good work from Australia
Thanks Rodney! Yes, they do..... way too fast! My little baby is getting to be a little girl. All the more reason to get this done ASAP... so we can have lots more memories of camping while shes young :D
Such good work, not many are able to create a trailer better than most dealers can offer even new.
Hey this is great, must feel very satisfying to reach this step. Hope you had a nice celebratory moment😁 Look forward to the next step cheers mate👍
Woe ! That slow motion entry, just awesome Big Guy, Man you make every man's Mom n Dad proud I'm sure. Real nice camper, better n sturdier then holiday trailer especially those cargo home build. I'm looking for a decent 3/4 ton pick up long box to build a aluminum frame camper for hunting season and ice fishing here in Canada, and you just gave me that boost to do so. Many THX . Hit the BELL !!!
Awesome built.
Nicely done!! Thank you for sharing.
Thanks Jim!
Thank you for explaining something that has Stumpt me for 3 weeks
Very nice so far, like the upgrade from the original idea.
Nice build.. well thought out and simple.
Love this series, thank you.
Thank you Sarah!
Looking wonderful! Very well thought out and modified... you’re family looks great in it too!
Thanks Steff! We fit perfectly... but one more kid would make it tight.. haha :)
It’s called bunk beds.... 😉
Great job Joe! I am really enjoying the build series and looking forward to seeing more.
Thank you Daniel! I'm looking forward to putting more vids on it out... because each video on the trailer means I'll be close to camping :)
Love your ATTENTION TO DETAIL and YOUR PATIENCE!!!!!!!!! You're a TRUE CRAFTSMAN with an excellent foresight into what you expect your build to look like when complete. All of your builds are masterpieces. You should be very proud of yourself. Being a long time cabinet maker myself,,,I've got to say,,you do it correctly,,,,BUT DUDE,,,,,SERIOUSLY!!!!! YOU'VE GOT SOME MAJOR $$$$$$$$$$$ BIG BUCKS tied up in that trailer. I do hope you'll tally up all your receipts and give those watching who don't know what tradesmen like us know,,is an approximation as to what kind of dollar $$$$$$ figure you've got tied up in your very cool camping trailer........please,,I gotta know......I've got an idea and I want to see if I'm close. Again,,,BEAUTIFUL BUILD,,,you're a talented carpenter, plumber, and electrician. KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK!!😊😊😊😊😊😊😊
I've been wondering what Clint Black has been up to, now I know, building campers! Nice work :)
Отличное решение для стола!
all I can say is, WOW!! you are an amazing guy. I love the trailer. I am however, so sorry for the damages during the storm, I hope you get it all fixed back! watching this build has inspired me to give this a try! I hope mine turns out half as nice as yours. your videos are awesome. I cant wait for your next video. I really like your craftsmanship, and how well you explain things. good luck on the future of this build!
