Hi Otagrosa I rescue bats, which is my volunteer job and my passion. Unfortunately it's quite a common rescue scenario in Spring, to rescue live babies on dead mothers who have been electrocuted on powerlines. Welcome to Megabattie, I put lots of information in the descriptions under the videos - so if you have questions, look for the answers there first. I also put the fate of the animal if I know it, at the time I put the video up. I may put updates there later if I find out what happened to the animal after it has left my care. There is also a Happy Outcomes playlist if you want to only watch videos where the bat survives; this is a real life channel and you get the good, the bad, the ugly and distressing, and even my oopsies. You can find further videos on an individual bat by searching in the YT search bar for Megabattie/and the name of the bat you want to follow. There is a community tab (like a mini Facebook page) on my channel - if you go to Megabattie home page, there is a menu bar across the top under the cover pic. Home, Videos, Playlists, Community, About. If you click on the community tab there are posts there where I can share pix and talk about some of the videos I put up and answer questions.
This is a bat rescue channel and this is what baby season is like most years. Many mums dead but we can rescue, save, raise and release the babies most of the time.
Yes, it's sad, but it happens over and over in baby season which is Spring in Australia. I have spent the last 3 weeks rescuing babies who are on dead mothers on powerlines. Ok I'm a 45 year old lady just wipeing my tears away this is so sad man the way the dead mum was hugging the Baby to keep it safe wow and that cute tiny baby precious 🥰💕🥰
The mum bat was electrocuted on powerlines. She and the baby fell, but she didn't keep the baby safe - the mum was dead so in death her wings just closed like that because that is the relaxed position for the wings. The baby grips onto mum because that's what they do - to let go is to fall and die. The mum's body protected the baby but the mum was dead - her body just naturally does that.

This is one of the saddest things I've ever seen. THANK YOU for keeping this tragedy from becoming a double tragedy. Your kindness and expertise make the future look bright for this very fortunate baby.♥️
Hi Rocketman Unfortunately this is a yearly thing - we rescue many babies on dead mothers who were electrocuted on powerlines. Sometimes the babies also have burns but often they're insulated by her fur. I can't count how many babies I've rescued or raised from dead mother bats under powerlines; babies with burns or electric shock injuries, or just orphaned and distraught about it. @@Megabattie It's impossible to save them all. That's true of all injured, sick, or orphaned animals. I believe what counts is your compassion for all of them, not just the ones who will pull through. Bless you for your kindness and efforts. We need more people like you in these times. Thank you also for taking time to reply to my comment, and share information about what you do
@@rocketman63 Thanks Rocketman. I like caring for the ones who really need me, whether or not they are ultimate survivors. I like to try to pull them through; I also don't have a problem euthanasing the ones who have no chance of survival, who are horribly injured, because I feel that's equally as important. Meg
I'm so glad that there are people in the world who love helpful animals who have a good heart, and even though my trust in people has been shaken, seeing that there are good people makes me think that I should question my negative thoughts about people.
This is wonderful, thank you for what you're doing. We raised a little foundling this summer - a tiny common pipistrelle we called Roy. He was no bigger than a man's thumbnail when we found him. Only a few days old. Somehow he not only survived, but thrived. Feisty little fellow. We even managed to teach him to fly, but couldn't figure how to teach him to hunt so we found a rehabilitation centre where he could learn in safety before returning to the wild. We totally bonded with Roy, and he with us. It was a lot of effort and learning for us and a huge emotional investment but 100% worth it to see him grow into a healthy, strong beautiful bat. I think it was about the best thing we have ever done. I loved that tiny creature with all my heart and we still have his portrait on the wall. Well done you, and good luck to your adopted baby. She's clearly in a really good place.
Hi Sea Gorilla, Thanks for caring for Roy and learning the joy of bonding with a bat. I don't keep any of these babies; I rescue, stabilise and move along to a carer. There were a lot of babies coming in at that time so Sultana was moved north to be raised with a bunch of other excess babies I had in care. I almost cried when I saw how you had to pry the baby away from its dead mother. I find it admirable how you're able to handle these things so well and stay composed and reasonable. I'm also really happy for all those babies that get to live their lives because of what you do. Thank you, truly.
Hi Lucy For me - the mum bat is dead, so there is no point being distressed by this because she is dead and can't feel anything anymore. I don't have to be emotionally crippled by her death because she is out of it all now and my focus is on the living baby. The baby is stressed because she's being taken off her mum, but this is the only chance she has of life, so this is my focus. The baby will quite quickly adapt to life in care and will go through a creche system to be released back into the wild with her age mates when she's old enough. When the hand raised babies are 3 months old, they go into a creche, where they join other orphans and form a group. They learn batty etiquette and how to live in a batty society. They shrug off their human mums and want to be with the other batties. When they are emotionally and physically ready, and uninjured, and around 4-5 months old, they’re put into a release cage under a colony and they can integrate into the colony and fly out with the wild bats. If they can’t find enough food, they can always come back to the cage for a feed. Support feeding is put up on the outside of the cage for as long as they are coming back and eating it. When the colony flies out for winter, they have fully integrated and fly out with them.
I'm not actually sure what you mean; you're proud of seeing my videos, experiencing my rescue work? I'm not a company just a batty rescuer in a network of batty rescuers trying to do the best for the batties. Whenever I see baby animals with parents, I just smile inside and handles them like if they were my own kids. My family used to get animals from other people that didn't want them or we find them and we take good care of them and treating them like a family would’ve. People do say Family don’t begin nor end with blood.

@@lord6780 All bats are potentially both harmless if you leave them alone to their habitat and dangerous if you are bitten or scratched by them. Fewer than 1% of the population may be infected with one of the rabies family of viruses and you can only contact it if you are bitten or scratched by a bat which is actually infected. If a bat is infected with the rabies virus it may be aggressive and fly onto you. Some are aggressive and some are passive when infected, depending on which part of the brain is affected. A few years back a child died from ABLV (Australian bat rabies) after being swooped on and scratched by an infected flying-fox in Australia. In Australia the rabies vaccine is free to people bitten or scratched by a bat..
@@Megabattie I know about the rabies thing that makes them aggressive, but I just said that flying foxes are more harmless than the others, not that the others are aggressive and this one is not.
It's so sad to see the mommy bats that didn't survive, but such a relief that the babies are insulated and can make it. This little one is so tiny. Awww!
I feel so sad when I see a orphan baby animal. You are doing a great job. Hope that bat grew up being healthy. I'm from Spain. Where I live, there's lots of brown long eared bats. They eat lots of mosquitoes and moths during the night

Lots of people help animals in so many ways, they just don't all have YT channels to show what they're doing. I love the batties and I love rescuing them and tending to them.
Meg, First of all, I want to thank you for teaching me about flying fox bats. I have watched "all" of your videos 3,4, 5 times. I can't find anyone that is sharing these rescues on any regular basis except you. Especially your style which I love. Plus you educate very well. You are very consistent. You can tell how much you care for these flying foxes. I love flying foxes because of you.
Thanks PH - have you really watched them all a few times? I have 3600 videos up, only a few hundred of which aren't bat related. 3600 videos is an awful lot of watching time. Yes I'm the only one sharing on a regular basis - usually daily but I am having a little break this week. I'm the only one who appears to be able to video as I go - I've tried lots of cameras, but for me, the best I've found is the video glasses - but they have their drawbacks. I'm glad you are learning about these amazing animals. (point of pedantry - they're either flying-foxes or bats, but they're not called flying-fox bats - it's a bit redundant - which means you now know something more LOL) Apparently I'm an acquired taste, and not everyone wishes to acquire my particular taste - so it's noice that you like my style. I fell in love with flying-foxes 15 years ago and when I'm excited about something I can't bear to not share around my excitement.

@@xzxloser.7101 In Australia the only thing you can catch directly from a bat is Lyssavirus, which is one of the rabies viruses. It's called ABLV (Australian Bat Lyssa Virus). You can only become infected if you are bitten or scratched by a bat who is actively shedding the virus from its brain at the time you were bitten or scratched. The virus has to be in their saliva and the saliva has to contact one of your nerve endings. Post exposure vaccination is effective if commenced before any symptoms occur.

The baby was protected by mum's body, but mum didn't choose to protect her, it was an accident of physics and biology. What saved the baby's life was someone seeing the dead mother and reporting that she was alive and moving her wing occasionally, which was the baby moving under mum's wing.

@@overratedabby2810 I joined wildlife rescue to rescue and rear parrots. I love parrots. But my vet said that my birds might get sick from wild birds and that I should do possum joeys because I had the time and skills, and not a lot of space. So I thought I'd do possum joeys and they would be cute and fluffy. But at the basic rescue course they said - you don't treat baby possums (joeys) as your babies - you feed them and change them and put them back. You cover their eyes when you feed them so they don't become too humanised. And I thought that sounded like work not fun. Hard work and not very satisfying. The next section was on bats - and with baby bats, you're allowed to love them. In fact, you have to love them. With possums they're solitary animals and don't hang out in families or groups or colonies. With baby bats, they're colony animals - they live in large groups and they're noisy and social and gregarious. Bat pups are used to a lot of interaction with their mums and with the colony; they're smart and interactive - so you need to be their mum - you need give them stimulation and social and emotional interaction. I loved the babies instantly; I learned to love the adults and appreciate their finer points. Somehow I ended up rescuing and caring for bats exclusively.

I rescue bats, which is my volunteer job and my passion. Unfortunately it's quite a common rescue scenario in Spring, to rescue live babies on dead mothers who have been electrocuted on powerlines.
Welcome to Megabattie,
I put lots of information in the descriptions under the videos - so if you have questions, look for the answers there first.
God bless you❤❤❤❤❤
I feel bad for the little bat, it's still hugging a mom and won't let go. And I'm grateful people like you, rescuing a little baby bat
.
🥺That was so sad.Thank you for saving the poor baby.
This is a bat rescue channel and this is what baby season is like most years. Many mums dead but we can rescue, save, raise and release the babies most of the time.
That's was Sad.Thank you for saving the baby.God Bless You.

THANK YOU for keeping this tragedy from becoming a double tragedy.

Hi Rocketman
Unfortunately this is a yearly thing - we rescue many babies on dead mothers who were electrocuted on powerlines. Sometimes the babies also have burns but often they're insulated by her fur.
I can't count how many babies I've rescued or raised from dead mother bats under powerlines; babies with burns or electric shock injuries, or just orphaned and distraught about it.

I like caring for the ones who really need me, whether or not they are ultimate survivors.
I like to try to pull them through; I also don't have a problem euthanasing the ones who have no chance of survival, who are horribly injured, because I feel that's equally as important.

There are lots of people who care, you just have to find them
Such a cute and scared little girl.
Hope she got to grow up to be a big little mommy herself.
She was raised and released, so one hopes she's out there making babies, about to give birth now.
Hi Sea Gorilla,
Thanks for caring for Roy and learning the joy of bonding with a bat.

Hi Lucy
For me - the mum bat is dead, so there is no point being distressed by this because she is dead and can't feel anything anymore.

The baby, Sultana, survived, was raised by a carer and released with other orphans of the season via a creche system.
Those are the most harmless bats, they feed on fruits and nectar.

Baby Sultana was rescued by me, raised by a carer once she was stable and feeding well and medically sorted out (no injuries or anything which would hold her back), then she was raised and released with other orphans of the season.
When the hand raised babies are 3 months old, they go into a creche, where they join other orphans and form a group. At this stage they'd be separating from this batty mums and be becoming more independent in the colony. In creche, at this age, they learn batty etiquette and how to live in a batty society.
(point of pedantry - they're either flying-foxes or bats, but they're not called flying-fox bats - it's a bit redundant - which means you now know something more LOL)
Apparently I'm an acquired taste, and not everyone wishes to acquire my particular taste - so it's noice that you like my style.
I fell in love with flying-foxes 15 years ago and when I'm excited about something I can't bear to not share around my excitement.

I like rescuing bats; I've been doing it for nearly 14 years now.
@@Megabattie I have doubt ,
Do bats causes virus or diseases when they bite or scratches ??
@@xzxloser.7101 In Australia the only thing you can catch directly from a bat is Lyssavirus, which is one of the rabies viruses. It's called ABLV (Australian Bat Lyssa Virus). You can only become infected if you are bitten or scratched by a bat who is actively shedding the virus from its brain at the time you were bitten or scratched. The virus has to be in their saliva and the saliva has to contact one of your nerve endings. Post exposure vaccination is effective if commenced before any symptoms occur.
It's beautiful how you're rescuing animals that are helpless. Love your videos!
I love doing this - it makes me feel good about myself and I can see that what I do has effects - I can see them when they go for release and know they would have died otherwise.
Welcome to Megabattie, Vixeinz.
I put information in the descriptions under the videos - so if you have questions, look for the answers there first. I put the fate of the animal if I know it, in the descriptions. I also put updates there later if I find out what happened to the animal after it has left my care.
There is also a Happy Outcomes playlist if you want to only watch videos where the bat survives.
You can find further videos on an individual bat by searching in the YT search bar for Megabattie/and the name of the bat you want to follow.
There is a community tab (like a mini Facebook page) on my channel - if you go to Megabattie home page, there is a menu bar across the top under the cover pic. OMG the amount of juice that needle gave her looked horrendous, I could barely watch. Thank goodness for strong brave people like yourself xx
It wasn't juice in the syringe - it was rehydration fluids given under the skin. It gets absorbed slowly and the skin there is really loose so it stretches easily,.
@@Megabattie oh I didn't think it was actual juice lol, but thanks for the reply. It just looked so much for a tiny body, seemed like it would hurt. I have complete confidence that you know what you are doing though.

HOW ARE YOU CRYING I WAST CRYING BUT THE BABY IS CUTE
@@ochoAzteca80 Maybe we are not hard-hearted twats like you.
Merci à vous ❤
The mother protected her child even after death 👍
thats why the most powerful force in the world is a mother's love:)
More like holding her baby until it can't move and dies too.
@@timminh468 The bat pup will continue to hold onto the mother's nipple.
It is all it knows and it can't survive on it's own at that age.
What do you think it should do?
Put on a suit and get a job?
Hi Herberto: The mother died - she had no warning - she just hit powerlines and was electrocuted. She didn't think about her baby because there was no time to think. The baby was protected by mum's body, but mum didn't choose to protect her, it was an accident of physics and biology.
What saved the baby's life was someone seeing the dead mother and reporting that she was alive and moving her wing occasionally, which was the baby moving under mum's wing.
@@paulg3336 Hey Paul - the baby may go wandering if there is no milk in mum's nipple for long enough and mum doesn't respond. Often that's how these babies are noticed - climbing around on mum's (by then) stinky bloated body, or climbing along the powerlines next to mum trying to figure out what to do next.
That was awesome. Good job! Thank you for this wonderful video.
Thanks WhatTheDeuce.

@@Megabattie how did u start the saving bats
@@overratedabby2810
I joined wildlife rescue to rescue and rear parrots.
Somehow I ended up rescuing and caring for bats exclusively.
a mother always be a mother😢😢love u mom😊😊and thankx 4 saving this angel 😊❤

I've always thought bats look so delicate. Like you'd easily break their wings if you're even just a little too rough.
Poor things. They get so much unneeded hate, it's not fair.
😊😘😚😙😻💏ادب
I know it's so not fair they might look scary or bad but they just make them scary by using them at Halloween when that are sometimes super cute!! So I recently agree
