Rescuing a flying-fox with his head stuck: this is Throttle
Вставка
- Опубліковано 22 гру 2024
- Throttle is an adult male Grey-Headed Flying-Fox who got his head stuck between 2 adjacent sheets of glass balcony balustrading.
During the last few years, these rescues have become more common with the increasing use of glass for balcony balustrades and pool fences.
I naively assumed this would be a simple rescue where I just wrapped the batty and lifted him up between the panes to the top where there would be an exit point; I was wrong. The balcony glass was capped with a metal edging so there was nowhere to lift him out.
I apparently had to get him out however he got in, just in reverse. He was very ungracious about the whole removal procedure (apparently it was all my fault he was stuck there); he bit on my towel and puffed up his neck and face, making the whole extraction a degree more complex. He kept trying to get his wrist into the gap to add to his bulk, and once I finally got the cloth out of his mouth his teeth were then left free to turn my fingers into confetti if he so chose. I had to stretch his neck out a bit to reduce his bulk and rotate his head so I could un-wedge it and slide it out. I won't say it was a particularly comfortable procedure for him but the options were for him to stay for a lot longer; I had to pick up Mum from church so I'd have had to come back in an hour or more.
Or I could have called the Fireys to remove one of the panels...
But the longer he was left there, the more he would struggle and the more damage he was doing to himself with all the exertion.
So I rotated his head and slid it back through, but it was a very rough slide and squished his face and ears on the way out; nonetheless it was successful.
I won't say I think he has a good chance of survival, because I don't. Such struggles can induce a kind of myopathy which causes renal failure.
All we can do is give him supportive care; whatever damage he has done has already happened, we just haven't seen the effect on him yet and it will take its course over the next 24 hours giving us a clearer picture; my job is to make sure he's as hydrated as he possibly can be to mitigate the effects of any toxins building up in his blood and causing kidney damage. The rest is up to his body, for it to decide if he will live or die.
KOKO (keep on keeping on) Throttle...
Throttle, so named because I have already named a batty Headlock, in the same situation; Throttle was next best name I could think of to describe his situation.
Thanks to the lovely MOPs who called and cared, and for the thumbnail pic which has a beautiful accidental reflection.
Update: Throttle died 2 days post rescue; RIP big fella.
His death was from exertional myopathy; stress struggling causes muscle damage, the by-products of which (myoglobin) cause kidney damage and cardiac damage. It's generally fatal within 24 hours, or a few weeks later when they get secondary renal failure.
Tolga Bat Hospital takes donations for our batties. Tolga is an awesome place in Far North Queensland, which has charity status. By sending donations to them, they get a percentage (and deserve every cent) and they can allocate money to me for batty expenses without it becoming part of my income stream (which makes tax time difficult).

Mention Megabattie or Meg in the PayPal message box and the money will find its way to me.
If no message box appears, please email Jenny to tell her that the money is for me.
IMPORTANT: If you pay through the PayPal Giving Fund, can you please email Jenny with the AMOUNT DONATED and the name under which you have donated, OR just forward along the PP receipt.
The Giving Fund doesn’t charge any fees (so the bats get more money) but PP doesn’t itemise out the amount, they just send a total every month, and we don’t know if the money is for Tolga or for Megabattie.
Here’s Jenny’s email.

It’s awesome that this woman could handle that situation and help the bat. Good woman.

I put lots of information in the descriptions under the videos - so if you have questions, look for the answers there first. I also put the fate of the animal if I know it, at the time I put the video up. I may put updates there later if I find out what happened to the animal after it has left my care.
There is also a Happy Outcomes playlist if you want to only watch videos where the bat survives; this is a real life channel and you get the good, the bad, the ugly and distressing, and even my oopsies.

@@MegabattieIf you had to, it wouldn’t have been your fault. I’m still puzzling over the engineering decision to leave that gap in the glass…
@@animaanimus8011 Building regulations require the panels to be a certain distance apart; this is mandated by law.
The gaps are gauged by the size of child limbs and heads.
You also have to factor in the length of the balcony to work out the size of the panels; panels need to be separated so they don't expand against the adjacent panel and shatter during heat and cold expansion and contraction.

@@Medalle2007 Yes, I lost Throttle; it explains it all in the description; once the bat goes out of my hands to another carer I can't keep videoing; I'm primarily a rescuer and immediate care carer; but with the adult males I drop them off to another carer if she's got other male bats; I have neighbours and the boy bats can be stinky;' I don't mind the smell, however if I can smell it in the corridor I know other people can, so I generally move the boys along to a carer with no close neighbours. He went to another carer and he died about 36 hours later; it wasn't unexpected.
The explanation in the description talks about rhabdomyolysis and entrapment myopathy.
Basically Throttle was dead when I rescued him but was still breathing; the damage done at that stage was too much to come back from and too much to mitigate it with fluids to dilute the toxins building up in his bloodstream and affecting his heart and kidneys.

I looked at the thumbnail for several seconds thinking, "what kind of spider is that?" But of course Throttle isn't a spider; just a fellow warm-blooded creature in a predicament that he's surely glad to be out of.
Major kudos for getting Throttle out of there! Fingers crossed he can recover. Poor guy had a VERY bad time. Shaking my head at the use of glass for balconies and pool fences. @@Megabattie Your efforts appeared masterful and you stayed so steady. Throttle was in a tough bind... Hope he'll thrive.
Excellent extraction! But your poor cheeks and neck! Whatever in the world was chasing after you? Well, we are all hoping you can get past this.
Nothing was chasing after him - he did this to himself after being stranded on the balcony and deciding he was going to escape.
That was sure a big boy! And a good weight for his size too. Fingers crossed for him. It was funny to see him stop biting the towel when he realized that he was free. You got a few seconds of cooperative gratitude and then he decided he’d had enough and wanted to leave.
Well done, Meg. Fingers crossed for his survival.
I hate that type of glass balustrading- it seems designed to entrap these bats. If the gap between glass panels was smaller, then this wouldn't happen. Poor Throttle, I hope he recovers. ♥️🦇♥️🦇♥️🦇♥️🦇♥️
It's a very uncommon rescue and I can count on one hand the number of head stuck rescues I've done from these glass panels.

Love your work. Flying foxes are magnificent animals. My grandma taught me this when I was little. Goodness he was really stuck, glad you didn't get bit through the whole process that I saw that is. Hope his mood improves with a little TLC ❤ 😊.
Of course I didn't get bitten; Meg very very rarely gets bitten - last time about 7 or 8 years ago.
Occasionally they get a nip in but usually it's only a warning; I can see their intent before they have a go at me if it's going to be serious, and my fingers are gone before they can sink their teeth into them.
Just one more reason to hate those glass railings! The lovely metal balcony railings in my old building were replaced with glass last year. The birds had a hard adjustment accessing my bird bath. Poor Throttle. I can only imagine him getting caught in that little space. He looked like he was feeling miserable. Good thing you know how to finagle batties out of tight spots, Meg.
They're a thing - there are hundreds of thousands of glass balcony panels and glass pool fencing in Sydney and it's not going to change, so I just work with what I have.
That little boy was determined to bite you and fight as much as possible. ♥️♥️♥️independent little cuss ♥️♥️♥️♥️. You did a fantastic job and are so patient.
I'd say persistent rather than patient; persistent and focussed.
Life is full of challenges. This is one of them.
I was so happy that the little chap got rescued but then I read he’d died
Fly High Throttle 💫 🥹 🦊🦇 😢
Good job tho human, it’s sad to hear about Throttle but your rescue centre is doing brilliant work!
Thanks
I don't have a rescue centre; all the wildlife people here work from their own homes at their own expense.
WE have a network of batty people to whom we can take animals; I live in an apartment and can't have bats here other than babies; if the bat needs to hang, then it needs to go elsewhere.
He sure is a spicy little guy 😂 wish we had amazing rehabbers like this in the US. Would make it so much easier to help wild animals in drastic need
You do have amazing rehabbers who go the full mile for many many animals; i'm not particularly special or unusual; I'm just one of a species of rescuer who likes doing what I do.
@@Megabattie yes we do have wonderful rehabbers in the US. My apologies. I should have been more specific and said I wish I had more awesome rehabbers IN MY AREA. 😉 I had rescued 2 baby oppossums from their dead mother and there was nowhere in my area to take them. 😌
@@cindyhurd5488 no worries, I just wanted you to know there are awesome people doing this, unsung, unnoticed, and without accolades.
Why don't you start up a rescue group in your area?
@@Megabattie thank you. So so very true! 💗☺ and THANK YOU for all YOU do. 💗
Aww fussy, angry baby. Thank God Meg had the patience & determination to do this properly. Congrats to Meg. & all the other rescuers(real rescuers, not ppl doing this for show) who do this type of thing.
5:52 That look of wonder, the onset of appreciation for Meg in his eyes upon realizing his freedom from the evil glass-thingy 🥰
Meg's last comment of" poor little thing" was so polite. 😊. Hope you had a quieter afternoon. And Mr throttle is feeling better too. Well done yet again .
Such admirable compassion! Thanks for your kindness.
I was sitting on the edge of my seat, mentally trying to help you get him turned around. That was a tricky rescue. I'm so glad that you were able to get him free without causing further harm to him. And I'm so glad that you know how to improve the chances for his survival. Bless you for helping him. 💙💙
Какое счастье что вам удалось освободить эту зверушку из опасной ситуации спасибо вам!!!!!❤
Thanks
BATSY!!!YOU GOT STUCK!! 🦇Seriously though thank you so much for saving this beautiful animal!! ❤ Respect!❤
Just part of batty rescue daily life.
Excellent video. Great job getting him free.
Precious little angel! I would have tried for one minute, then panicked and smashed the pane of glass to free him.
Thank you for rescuing him - especially knowing he likely wouldn’t survive long. I’m so glad he had good care and love before the end. You are extraordinary!
poverinooooo...grazie per ciò che fate per queste Meravigliose Creature!! siete Angeli❤🌹
On my. You are so brilliantly patient. Thank you 💙🌻💙
Beautiful Rescue, tender touch...❤
Poor batty I hope it will be ok😢such a rough time . I think it was really happy to have his head pop out . Even though it hurt that first look showed gratefulness it's head was free as it blinked in surprise
That was amazing ❤ thanks for helping that little guy. His little squeaks were absolutely adorable! Look on his face after was like dear God, my face has been pulled and squeezed.😂
He pulled and squeezed his face getting into that gap; there was blood on the concrete underneath him when I arrived so he's clearly squished himself getting in
Thank you sooo much for this rescue. 👍💕🙏💕 Great Job!!
You are a wonderful, kind and thoughtful woman. Thank you for caring for the beautiful species that inhabit the world.
Those blasted glass panels!
They're a thing - there are hundreds of thousands of glass balcony panels and glass pool fencing in Sydney and it's not going to change, so I just work with what I have.
Good job sweet lady, you sure know how to handle them properly, thank you for saving him!
Hi Don; this is a bat rescue channel; I've been handling bats for 17 years now, so I should know by now.
Welcome to Megabattie, I'm Meg
I put lots of information in the descriptions under the videos - so if you have questions, look for the answers there first. I also put the fate of the animal if I know it, at the time I put the video up. I may put updates there later if I find out what happened to the animal after it has left my care.
There is also a Happy Outcomes playlist if you want to only watch videos where the bat survives; this is a real life channel and you get the good, the bad, the ugly and distressing, and even my oopsies.
You can find further videos on an individual bat by searching in the YT search bar for Megabattie/and the name of the bat you want to follow.
There is a community tab (like a mini Facebook page) on my channel - if you go to Megabattie home page, there is a menu bar across the top under the cover pic. Home, Videos, Playlists, Community, About. If you click on the community tab there are posts there where I can share pix and talk about some of the videos I put up and answer questions.
I put up videos from Mandi and my rescue and care videos, so look to the title or description to figure out the context of the vids. Mandi doesn't rescue but she does a huge amount of rehabbing and has a lot of permanent care bats unable to be released for various reasons. She sends me the most amazing videos of her old retired bats in care; they've all got individual personalities and adorable quirks. Mandi lives 1200 kms away from me so I don't get to visit there often. I raise money for her on the videos.
The rescue vids from my point of view are all mine, and if you hear me talking and see my hands in the videos doing bat care, then that's me too.
The picture looks like he's praying it's so adorable 😊
Poor baby, Thank you for rescuing him. I have love bats all my life, they are so darn cute😊
Poor Throttle. Hope he gets to feeling better after some good rest.
No matter how stubborn they get they are fantastic! The best to watch and learn! 😊
You are awesome!!! FABULOUS JOB!!!!
Probably, like everyone else, I took a deep breath when you got him free, amazing job! Just hope his body can deal with the toxins and he pulls through.
I haven't heard yet
Good lord.... I can feel it in my neck 😅
OMG!! You are brave lady for sure! I would have panicked and called a vet as a first point of call and if that didn't work then I'd have no choice but to muck in like you, but you were on it like a cool person would. Awesome work❤
Hah, the vets don't do house visits for rescuing bats; I'm with a bat rescue organisation and this is what I do on a volunteer basis. I like solving tricky puzzles.
The vets would tell you to call Wildlife Rescue, who would put out the call to bat rescuers on an app.
Well done, Meg. Great job❤❤❤
Thank you very much for saving this Sweetie Pie. 😇🙏❤️ God bless you with anything you may need. And you reading my comment God bless you with whatevere your needs are. God will provide. Amen. 😇🙏
I rescue bats; that's my volunteer job of 17 years now.

She has nerves of steel❤
Nah - I'm just not scared of the bat and knew if he got himself into that predicament I could get him out the same way but in reverse.
Patience of Job
@@lindawhite-id3ly I don't think it's patience, I think it's persistence. I'm not scared of bats and I assessed that it was possible to get him out by reversing his actions, so I was just focussed on the puzzle and how to solve it.
I like puzzles and I like doing tricky rescues.
I have just subscribed to watch more of your videos thanks for posting this video and especially for helping the flying foxes. I have loved them since the first one I saw. ♥️
Thanks Angela

I have to tell you I was in suspense beyond belief then you had me laughing my butt off. This is like the best movie ever you’re so wonderful for getting these animal saved.
Thanks Kristen

He’s Full Throttle! Poor little guy. He gets stuck in between the glass, and of course doesn’t understand that all this is to help him. I expect he’ll settle down in a few days once he knows he’s safe.
Wow I was like oh my goodness come on little guy you can do it she’s there to help you ! You’re a sweetheart for helping the poor little guy ! 💞💞💞
I am sorry he still ended up passing. As a fellow rehabber, we can try to brace for potential losses, but it still is saddening. You did great, and at least he passed more comfortably. Thank you for your hard work and dedication!
I didn't expect him to survive; they usually don't if they struggle hard enough for long enough. I don't expect all the bats I rescue to survive; I do my best, celebrate the successful outcomes and move on from the deaths. I don't bond with them till I've had them in care for at least 48 hours and their condition is improving.
Bravo Ms Meg..most stressful rescue ordeal I have ever seen...Praise the Lord for your patience and care...
