Maybe it was a dream...or maybe it was a near-death experience, with various afterlife deities arguing over the fate of Earl's soul. We'll probably never know!

@@setonhillstudios And this was because the guy just had a scary hospital visit (which is why you see his husband giving him the medallion). You have 3 death deaties (including one that judges people by weighing their heart against feathers), and one death and rebirth deity (Geoff/Baron), which if you watch their interaction, you can see the 3v1 happening. Baron is known to take something when giving you a chance. I think the medallion is gone when he wakes up.
They are truly the most creative acapella group and it’s just one of the many reasons why they are by far my favorite! ❤

You mentioned the arrangement - this one was done by Layne (he did most of the earlier medleys). That means that he not only did the arrangement, but planned/directed/edited the video.

That's the standard - they chat about possibilities, and eventually Layne or Geoff "claims" one and agrees to do it. It's assumed that whoever agreed to arrange it has the creative vision to take it to the end. That doesn't mean that they don't collaborate, or get stuck on something (Geoff did Nothing Else Matters and wasn't happy with his ending... Layne apparently said "how about this?" hauled out his violin and added that part. Geoff added a part to Layne's Hall of the Mountain King. And Eli does lighting, and always does their backdrops. But the burden goes to the arranger, and their decision is always final. Layne has commented that he thinks of their videos as pieces of art... Moving forward, Eli is going to be taking a full role and doing every third video.

There is nothing like VoicePlay. Even when they do a more standard acapella performance there's still so many exceptional gems within.

This is my favourite Earl-centric one and it's just fantastic, both for the music and the staging - as you say, it's like watching a mini musical! See you further down the rabbithole...

Others will give you more details on the legends. Various gods of the underworld fighting over who gets him as he's dying. The man in the bed is Earl Elkins Jr, an original member since 1997 or 1999. He left for personal reasons in 2020. The man in the brocade coat is J None. He was with them from 2018 to 2021. He was replaced by Cesar de la Rosa, you saw him in Bruno. They are still one man short so work with a variety of talented artists mostly in the Orlando area.
You might enjoy their Boy Bands in 5 Minutes. Whatever you think it will be, you're wrong. Thanx for watching the entire video, I know it help their algorithm when you do it and when I do it for you.

I love that sometimes we just get a single line or reference to one of the songs. The little bit of Under Pressure is very short but adds a lot not only musically but to the storyline.
Recently on one of the reactions somebody pointed out that the bell tones in the beginning, during the introduction to their characters, the dum dum dum tones are actually from Bohemian Rhapsody. I have listened to this countless times and never have caught that.
Thank you for listening all the way to the end, not only do you see the patron list, but often there will be a little extra piece of information or an epilogue or a little bit of behind-the-scenes. Over the last few years they’ve started using part of their karaoke track during the outro which can often be an outstanding piece of music on its own.
Crazy how much there is to unpack!

This is one of my top 3 or 5 Voiceplay Songs.
This song was inspired by an actual medical emergency that Earl (the guy in the hospital bed, and High Tenor of the group (he left the group for personal reasons in 2020))
So a brief explanation of the story line:
Earl is in the hospital and his husband (real life husband) places a gold coin around his neck to pay the God's of Death for passage to the afterlife.
The four Gods of death from different religions/cultures.
Layne - Guardian, cross between Nordic and/or Greek Gods
Eli - Yama Nirvana, Hindu God of Death
J None - Anubis, Egyptian Gid who weighs your life to the feather of truth (if you're heart is lighter then you get to go to heaven, you're heart is heavier then your soul gets devoured, and if they are equal then it means you might have unfinished business and can choose)
Geoff - Baron, Voodoo God who can choose if you're allowed to even die (he has to dig your grave or you can't die). He is also a healer and can heal any human illness at a cost.
So the three (Eli/J None/Layne) just want to do their jobs and escort Earl to the underworld. But Geoff notices the scales and wants to give Earl a chance, going so far as to protect him from Layne's sword.
In the end Earl decides to returns to the living and banishes the others leaveing Geoff for the end where they exchange a brief nod as if saying "see ya later".
Earl wakes up and the gold coin is missing, Taken by the Baron as payment.

Great reaction. I agree with all the selections below and you should also check out the bass, Geoff Castellucci's (Jeff Cast-a-loo-chee) solo channel he started when covid forced Voiceplay to stop touring. I especially recommend House of the Rising Sun and Aint No Sunshine. Geoff does use instruments on his solo work but he does all the singing parts.

@@setonhillstudiosGeoff usually clones himself 3 or 4 times & harmonizes with himself. Even if you don't see all of them trust me they are all there in the background. All the voices you hear are all Geoff.

This was a great reaction - the storyline was (so I understand) based on a real-life medical issue that Earl (the guy in the bed) had while they were on tour, the other chap in the beginning and end is his real-life partner (who also makes a cameo appearance in Boy Bands in 5 Minutes, along with the wives of Geoff, Eli and Layne!) - so he was battling against the underworld to make it back again!

VoicePlay started out as a group of school friends, Geoff, Layne and Earl became the core though the years until Earl left in 2020 for undiclosed personal reasons. J.None left in 2021 to sing with the navy, then Cesar joined them Being down to four they use guest singers to make up a five member group. To join the group you need to have an amazing voice capable of any genre, plus the zany sense of humour they employ a lot. Also of course they have to get on as a group. And be available. They are still looking for a fifth member though many hope that they're keeping that place for J.None to come back when he leaves the navy. They aren't saying. :) VoicePlay must be the most imginative acapella group out there. Their arrangements are second to none.

Eli, Layne and J None are deities of death, trying to bring Earl's soul to the afterlife. (this was recorded after a real life health scare for Earl) Geoff plays Baron, a gatekeeper of sorts, who is not convinced that Earl is ready to die yet, but the other 3 are trying to convince Earl that he is ready to die. So they are basically battling over Earl's soul. Earl ends up deciding he is not ready to die and "defeats" the deities and returns to life where his husband awaits him.
I would also point out that at the start of the video, Nick places a metal coin or medallion around Earl's neck. Currency like this was often placed on or with the dead to ensure their passage into the afterlife. Notice that at the end of the video, "Baron" who is not only a god of death but creation and can heal (Haitian Voodoo) is the last of the gods to disappear before Earl returns to the world of the living. When he wakes, the medallion/coin is GONE, likely taken by Baron in exchange for Earl's healing.
A couple more hints that Baron wants to see Earl make his own choice given his situation... he is often on the other side of Earl from the rest of the gods, almost as if keeping watch and protecting Earl while the others argue over him. And during "Under Pressure", Baron's skull cane prevents the weapons of the other gods (mostly Guardian) from making contact with Earl, giving him a chance to "break free" and "play the game", having a hand in his own destiny
Adding another moment to this: During Earl's heartfelt rendition of "Good Old Fashioned Lover Boy" ("When I'm not with you/think of me always/I'll miss you...") where it seems like he's lost hope of seeing Nick again, the gods all come in with "It's so easy... when you know the rules... to play the game..." They're hinting that he still has a chance, IF he can figure out how to fight back and outsmart them. After a moment, he does! Hence the epic climax to Bohemian Rhapsody, followed by The Show Must Go On. In the end Baron seems almost pleased with Earl's success, taking the medallion and leaving Earl to find his way back to Nick!

@@setonhillstudios Valhalla Calling and Mother Told me, if you want some Viking Vibe. Halo just for Geoff's base, and I personally (not a majority favorite but fairly well liked) love what they did with Hall of the Mountain King.
The guy in the hospital is dying and in a coma. His spouse had put the gold coin around his neck to pay the underworld gods. The 4 that are titled are each one of those gods. Clever use of the Queen songs to create a little movie.

3 death deities, and one death and rebirth deity; you should be able to tell which one is the odd one out if you watch closely, specally when he defends against the others just before 'under pressure'.
